Nothing stood in the way of her career, except alcohol. But when Khadi sought help for her drinking, she often found she was the only Black woman in the room. This week, we also return to The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid by tackling chapter 12 and facing off with the scorpion deity Serqet. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and updates (00:01:30) Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda got a Kirkus starred review! Read Riordan did a cute interview with Graci Kim. They also asked, “Who is the most powerful god or goddess in ther Riordanverse?“ DID YOU REMEMBER THAT THE NEW THE SUN AND THE STAR COVER GLOWS IN THE DARK BECAUSE WE DID NOT. Keep an eye on Rainbow Crate's socials for a possible reprint of The Sun and the Star with the new cover. The UK cover for Chalice of the Gods is spectacular, and we once again have to give major props to Khadijah Khatib. You can pre-order the exclusive edition from Waterstones. And if you want to see the original painting of the cover you can go to Khadi's Twitter. And we might've figured out what the mysterious book Rick is working on is. Variety reports that Disney and several other studios will not host panels at SDCC this year. Becky says Disney will still have a presence at the con, however. She also says she doesn't know anything about D23 yet. Deep Dive: Bast (00:17:04) We're super excited to talk about Bast, and—by association—Callie! We're already starting off on rough footing because we don't actually know the origins of her name. It makes a lot of sense that Bast is associated with Artemis. Weirdly enough, she started off as a lioness goddess of the SUN, not the moon. She's got some pretty recognizable family members. Bast has a lot of important roles in Egyptian society, which explains why she was so popular. Shoutout to Brendan Fraser in The Mummy! There seems to be some connection between Bast and alabaster. What symbols are usually associated with her? We didn't expect to see the word aegis again! Her transformation from a lion goddess to a domesticated cat goddess is super interesting. Can we not name deadly asteroids after the enemies of the sun god? Ancient Egyptians really, REALLY loved cats. Bubastis is such a cool name for a city, and it sounds like it was a fun place to hang out, too. Is it weird that an important component to Bast's temples was water? Karen wants more information on the festivals of Bast because they sound amazing. It makes so much sense that Bast is the first deity we really get to know in The Red Pyramid. Will she end up fighting Apophis? We hope Bast sticks around for all three books! Sources: Wikipedia | WorldHistory.org Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (00:41:15) This week, we're discussing The Red Pyramid chapter 12! Serqet is, like, SUPER creepy…but also a little awesome? Why is Sadie so drawn to help Zia, who is clearly holding her own just fine? How did Sadie know about the Seven Ribbons of Hathor? Regardless, Zia must be pretty powerful to be able to wield them. We wonder if Sadie's powers come from her mother and if it's a female lineage kind of thing. We already know who we want to play Bast in the Red Pyramid Netflix film. Kristen tries to make scorpions even scarier than they already are. Feedback (00:57:32) Thank you, Rachel, for sharing a picture of your cat! [Title]: The Sober Black Girls Club: Embracing Sobriety, Authenticity, and Joy with Khadi A. Oluwatoyin Khadi Oluwatoyin, a Nigerian-American, was born and raised in the heart of New York but is currently living in Tulsa Oklahoma, home of Black Wall Street and first settled by the Lochapoka Band of Creek Native American tribe. Khadi is an attorney, mental health and sobriety advocate, consultant, community builder, and social entrepreneur. Her work over the last few years has focused on increasing the wellness of Black girls, women, femmes, non-conforming folks, and queer folks of color. Khadi created Sober Black Girls Club in 2018 when she decided to get sober and noticed that many pro-sober platforms did not cater to girls and women who looked like her or shared similar cultural and societal experiences. At the time, SBGC was just a blog. Today, it is a coast-to-coast, 501(c)(3) collective that, in addition to the blog, runs a newsletter, mentorship program, four weekly support meetings, and more. Khadi and Sober Black Girls Club have been featured in several publications including the Red Table Talk, The Washington Post, The Huff Post, Teen Vogue, Mademoiselle, and Shondaland.   [Episode Summary]:  In this episode, Beth Bowen interviews Khadi A. Oluwatoyin, the founder of the Sober Black Girls Club (SBGC), an empowering online community and support network for Black women navigating sobriety. Khadi shares her personal journey with addiction, shedding light on the cultural pressures of perfectionism ingrained in her Nigerian upbringing that masked her struggles. She explores the transformative power of vulnerability, authenticity, and self-acceptance in her path towards sobriety. Khadi also discusses the importance of creating spaces that prioritize joy, pleasure, and community, challenging the traditional narratives around recovery. Her work with SBGC aims to break free from societal norms and create a safe and inclusive space for Black women to embrace sobriety on their terms.   [Episode Highlights]: Khadi's personal journey with addiction and the cultural pressures of perfectionism in her Nigerian upbringing. It was during college that she discovered alcohol quelled the depression she's experienced since childhood, but it wasn't until after graduating from law school that she began drinking excessively. She sought help for her alcohol use in 2018, and noticing the lack of culturally adequate support for sober Black women, she created Sober Black Girls Club.Sober Black Girls Club also has an accompanying podcast of which J. Nicole is the co-host. J. Nicole's experience with alcohol began during her freshman year of high school, where heavy drinking was common among her friend group and the basketball team she was a member of. Her basketball career extended into college where the drinking was also commonplace. Though people expressed their concerns over her drinking, she ultimately wanted to better herself and became sober at age 23 during her senior year of college. In this episode, they both share their respective journeys, why cultural support is critical for those seeking sobriety and the importance of community and growth in recovery.

Shradha Kochhar (b. Delhi, India) is a textile artist and knitwear designer based in New York, as well as the co-founder of apparel and clothing brand LOTA. Best known for her home spun and hand knitted ‘khadi' sculptures using ‘kala cotton' - an inherently organic cotton strain indigenous to India, her work is at an intersection of material memory, sustainability and intergenerational healing. Focusing on generating a physical archive of personal and collective south asian narratives linked to women's work, invisible labor and grief, the work is large scale and will exist beyond whispers over generations. The work is made from hand spinning ‘Kala cotton' - a cotton crop indigenous to India on a portable booklet spinning wheel (charkha) and hand knitting it into textures and structures that mimic the skin on our bodies. Focusing and investigating resources lost and born out of colonization in India such as ‘Khadi' - a self reliant and equitable practice of textile making and ‘Kala Cotton', a miracle cotton crop that sustains completely on seasonal rainfall as solutions to climate change, water shortage, soil degradation and social inequity. Built from an ongoing library of seed bank that documents indigenous cotton strains found across the world, unraveling the intersection of words - ‘cotton', ‘cloth', ‘colonization' and ‘community'. Shradha's mission is to understand the potential in soil and to establish an alternate system of textile farming and making, that discourages modern technology that feasts on the felling of forests and extraction of resources. In this episode, we discuss regenerative resources and how we can think about materials in a more cyclical way, soft sculpture and the knitted essay, and how collaboration and the act of building community can make an art practice that much stronger. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ongoingness/support

But within hours of arriving at college, she had her first drink – and so began her career as a heavy binge drinker. She shares the specific solution that alcohol provided for her: it was a way to put down the high-achieving, perfectionist tendencies that she developed as a kid to mask the impact of her abusive childhood. As well as hearing her personal story, I wanted to learn from Khadi about the specific challenges of Black women in sobriety – and we get into topics such as the myth of the Black superwoman, and why AA tends to be so white, and why creating more inclusive sober spaces is not always the answer. In the episode we discuss:-Becoming a high achiever in school to mask the impact of her traumatic childhood-The immediate relief she felt on taking her first drink at college-Perusing a career in law – and what makes this a heavy-drinking profession-Why early intervention can prevent people from developing more serious substance use disorders-Why alcohol addiction is often not spoken about openly among the Black community-Being the only Black person at the rehab facility she went to, and why this is so common-Why it takes so long for high functioning addicts to get the help they need-Her experience of AA – and why she knew this program would never work for her-Why it was having no more goals to reach for that tipped her into addiction-Mental health conversations in the black community-Why Black women's self-worth is so tied up with being busy and helping others-Why race is integral to both the causes of and recovery from addiction-What's in her Sober Black Girls recovery toolkit – and why creating SBG has been part of thisLearn more about Khadi and her work HERE and follow her on Instagram @soberblackgirlsclubAnd big thanks to Lyres and Three Spirit for partnering on this episode!Discover Lyres non-alcoholic spirits at Lyres.com and visit lyres.com/sobercurious to sign up for a special 15% discount code. Welcome to a really exciting episode of the Indian Dream - we've wanted to talk to this founder for the past 1 year at least. In this episode, we speak to Vivek Sahni, co-founder and CEO of Kama Ayurveda. For the few listeners who haven't heard of Kama, they are an Ayurveda based Hair & Beauty brand that now has 59 retail stores across the country.Join our No-Spam WhatsApp GroupThe reason we love Kama Ayurveda so much is that they started in 2002 at a time when nobody spoke about Ayurveda or even cared about it. They are pioneers who saw the early signals of the clean beauty movement and the resurgence of Ayurveda in India and staked a claim. This 20 year journey has culminated in Kama becoming one of the best known beauty brands to come out of India with a reported 100cr investment by a Spanish Luxury brand.I'll give you a quick history about Kama and Vivek before we jump right into the conversation with him.The journey to Kama started in 1993 when Vivek moved back to India after studying Design at the Parson's School of Design in New York. After coming back, he started a design studio called Vivek Sahni designs with his partner David Chang. Fun fact - Vivek and Dave ran this design studio all the way to 2013. For the first 10 years of Kama Ayurveda's existence, it was just a side hustle. In 1998 - Vivek worked on a 2 year project to design gift packaging for Khadi India, a government organisation set up to promote the development of Khadi and village industries in rural areas. During this project, they helped create a range of products, protocols, worked with manufacturers, and helped train people to source the best productsThis experience with Khadi India drove the founding of Kama Ayurveda in 2002 as an authentically Indian brand that was steeped in the traditions of Ayurveda. Kama had 4 founders, Vivek Sahni, Dave Change, interior designer Vikram Goyal and Padma Shri awardee Rajshree Pathy. It was Rajshree's connection with Ayurvedic doctors in Coimbatore that led them down the path of Ayurveda. The actual product development took them nearly 2 years and in the end, they started with a range hair and skin products that were authentically Ayurvedic. From 2002 to 2012, Vivek spent about 30% of his time on Kama while the rest was spent on his design studio. The brand grew organically increasing its distribution across pharmacies and hotels in Delhi. We now jump into the conversation with Vivek around 2005 2006, when they got distribution as in-room amenities at Oberoi and The Park hotels and how that impact the brand. Before getting into the episode - please join our No Spam WhatsApp group where we post information about the latest episodes. This week we had the pleasure of speaking with Khadi from Sober Black Girls Club. Khadi lives in New York and in 2018, after slipping into alcohol addiction, decided to get sober. She struggled to identify with any of the recovery communities out there and felt underrepresented as a sober black woman. So she went ahead and created her own community and has been on a mission to help and support black girls, women and non binary folks ever since. As a lawyer she also supports these women by giving legal advice and raising funds in order to provide specific resources to them. We talk about the issue of inclusivity in the recovery space, how important it is to have these safe spaces that are specific to and talk to the trauma black women experience and how everybody has the right to recover. How discrimination runs throughout receiving support for sobriety from education to treatment. We don’t talk very much about mindfulness in fashion, but it’s not like the two are mutually exclusive. If the opposite of sustainable fashion is thoughtlessly buying more and more clothes and getting rid of them after just a few wears, then mindfulness surely has a place. Fashion journalist Bandana Tewari is a former Vogue India editor who now writes for Business of Fashion, and speaks globally on India’s rich tradition of fashion craftsmanship. This episode covers that but from a unique perspective: Bandana’s been developing a theory around what we can learn from the great Indian activist Mohandas Gandhi (mahatma means high-souled in Sanskrit). It was Gandhi who lead the khadi movement, uniting Indians in opposition to British colonial rule around the issue of cotton production. How did he develop his sartorial integrity, and what can we learn from that in today's context of hyper-consumerism.
