Did you know that seventy-five percent of people with substance use disorder who have sustained support recover? It's true. And the statistic is important because alcohol is an addictive substance and substance use is the rule, not the exception, in America.  If you're struggling with moderating your drinking, worrying about how much you drink or are struggling with achieving sobriety, you are not alone. And it's important to know that recovery is not only possible, but likely. Individuals who engage in long-term, consistent care have a 75% chance of achieving sustained recovery from addiction.  I asked Dr. Nzinga Harrison, a double-board certified physician in addiction medicine and psychiatry and the author of the book, Un-Addiction: 6 Mind-Changing Conversations That Could Save a Life, to share why addiction is often misunderstood as a moral failing rather than a medical condition. Through our conversation you'll have a new understanding of what addiction is, why addiction happens and how we can recover from addiction to alcohol or other substances.  4 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. This week's episode is a recap of some conversations from seasons 1 and 2 that highlighted the impact of addiction and mental health stigma. If you've been listening for the past year, you already know substance use disorders and mental health struggles often come hand-in-hand. Even if you haven't been listening, you probably know this from personal experience. Our goal with this podcast is to lessen the impact of stigma, have vulnerable conversations, and hopefully make it easier for someone else to ask for help. There are threads of shame and stigma which span race, gender, class, sexuality, religion, and more, which is why stigma is so insidious. EP. 212ABOUT THE EPISODE:When Dr. Nzinga Harrison was recently approached by her son, a high school senior, about going to his first party, she consented. He was unsurprised by her followup question: “Do you think there will be drugs there?” As an addiction psychiatrist and M.D. specializing in addiction medicine, Dr. Harrison had been talking with him about substances since he was very young, so the question wasn't awkward. “Yeah, probably,” he replied. As her stomach twisted, she realized that the years of preparation for this stage of his life were about to be tested – if not at the party, then sometime soon afterward. In the two years since our favorite doctor was last on the show, Dr. Harrison has organized much of her extensive knowledge about the roots of substance use disorders into a new book: Un-addiction: 6 Mind-Changing Conversations That Could Save a Life. The framework is comprehensive and data-driven, but also plainly written and easy to understand. I tried using sticky notes to mark the best parts, but gave up when I realized I was marking almost every page.In this conversation, Dr. Harrison lays out these six conversations, sharing with us how the conversation with her son progressed, and covering a range of other topics, including:Conversational scripts for talking to kids about substancesThe importance of asking, “What do you know?” without judgmentThe nascent idea of “pre-addiction” and how understanding it can change the trajectory for someone strugglingHow your ZNA (zip code at birth) predicts health outcomes better than your current zip codeHow cultural traditions and rituals can create risk factorsEPISODE RESOURCES:Un-Addiction bookEleanor HealthDr. Nzinga Harrison's websiteThis podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram: @hopestreamcommunityDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. SummaryThis conversation focuses on the middle lane of alcohol use disorders and the importance of prevention and early intervention. The speakers discuss tools and techniques for waking people up to their relationship with alcohol and provide a simple acronym, CAGE, to assess alcohol use. They emphasize the stages of change model and the significance of slip-ups in the change process. The conversation also explores underlying issues and pain that may drive alcohol use. The lack of awareness in the medical profession and the rise of alcohol-free alternatives are discussed. The book 'Unaddiction' is highlighted as a resource for having important conversations about alcohol. The conversation explores the cultural revolution happening among millennials and Gen Zs, who are rethinking their relationship with alcohol. The rise of the low alcohol and no alcohol movement is encouraging, as it challenges the traditional norms around drinking. The discussion also highlights the importance of teaching children emotional recognition and coping skills from an early age, with the hope of changing the next generation's approach to alcohol and other substances. The hosts share their shared mission to change the narrative around behaviors like alcohol consumption and the need to raise awareness among older generations stuck in old habits.TakeawaysThe middle lane of alcohol use disorders, which includes mild to moderate cases, is a crucial focus for prevention and early intervention. The stages of change model can help individuals navigate the process of behavior change, including reducing or quitting alcohol use.Slip-ups and departures from the desired behavior are a normal part of the change process and should be met with curiosity and support rather than shame.Having open and non-judgmental conversations about alcohol use is essential in breaking down stigma and raising awareness. The future of alcohol and our relationship with it involves increasing awareness, providing more support and resources, and promoting alcohol-free alternatives. There is a cultural revolution happening among millennials and Gen Zs, who are questioning the need for alcohol and seeking alternative ways to socialize.Teaching children emotional recognition and coping skills from an early age can help prevent reliance on substances like alcohol.Using personal experiences and relatable examples can help raise awareness and make difficult conversations about alcohol more approachable.Softening the ground by discussing lesser stigmatized behaviors can create a safe space for conversations about alcohol.Social LinksLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nzingaharrisonmd/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/unaddictionpod/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nzingaharrisonmdBook: https://www.amazon.com/Addiction-Mind-Changing-Conversations-That-Could/dp/1454950870/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=1S907B8KID6ER&keywords=unaddiction&qid=1689740394&sprefix=unadd%2Caps%2C96&sr=8-1Website: eleanorhealth.com

What are the risk factors for alcohol use disorder? Are they genetic, social, environmental or psychological? Alcohol is the most widely misused substance in America and, according to the National Center For Drug Abuse Statistics, 1-in-10 Americans over the age of 12 qualify as having a mild, moderate or severe Alcohol Use Disorder. So how do you get to your first year alcohol-free? I asked Dr. Nzinga Harrison to share both the risk factors for alcohol use disorder and strategies to help people become part of the 75% of people who do recover.  Dr. Harrison is a physician with specialties in addiction medicine and psychiatry, the Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder of Eleanor Health and co-founder of Physicians for Criminal Justice Reform. She's spent her career focusing on stigma reduction and health equity and is an advocate for leading with empathy in addiction treatment and reframing the way we view and address addiction and the people who are dealing with substance use disorders. Just say no. Drugs are whack.  Recognize, Resist, Report.   These phrases stem from programs and campaigns and political agendas that ultimately hurt the United States and its people. The Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program or DARE filled schools in the 90s—and while overall being deemed ineffective, it continues today asking youth to take pledges to stay away from drugs and gangs. Then there's the failed and heavily criticized War on Drugs that began in the 70s but really took off in the 80s. With it came laws that criminalized drugs and racially targeted specific groups and communities of people—especially people of color. Its focus weighed heavily on deterring use rather than emphasizing treatment and recovery.   So today, with all of this in mind, we have the immense honor of talking with and learning from Dr. Nzinga Harrison about addiction and the on-growing and growing opioid epidemic. Dr. Harrison is a physician, educator, and the Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder of Eleanor Health, a value-based provider of comprehensive, outpatient addiction treatment. Above all else, this conversation is about reframing the way we as individuals and as a society view and address addiction and the people who are dealing with substance use disorders.  Show Notes (Links of ours and guests):   Download a transcript of this episode at twloha.com/podcast.   Follow TWLOHA on social media at: twitter.com/TWLOHA instagram.com/twloha/ facebook.com/towriteloveonherarms/   Visit our FIND HELP page of mental health resources at twloha.com/find-help/.   Get connected for free, 24/7 to a trained crisis counselor via Crisis Text Line by texting TWLOHA to 741741.   Connect with our team by emailing podcast@twloha.com.   Learn more about the podcast and previous episodes at twloha.com/podcast. As the daughter of a public school teacher/administrator and an electrical engineer, who was also the commander of the local Black Panther Party, Nzinga was raised as an advocate who always knew she would become a doctor and a teacher. In medical school, her world was upended by a psychiatry rotation that drove her into mental health care within the context of social & political factors. Compassion, connection, and relationships drive health. Coming correct to substance use disorder treatment means bringing the compassion and resource we offer cancer patients and the biological, social, & cultural interventions we use to manage the lifelong chronic illness that is diabetes. We wouldn't drop off a newly diagnosed diabetic who just spent 5 days in the ICU stabilizing their blood sugar into their old neighborhood without medication, education, and connection to ongoing care and social support because this doesn't make any sense. Why do we do this with people suffering with substance use disorders? With joy, humor incredible wisdom, and a take-no-prisoners attitude, Nzinga points out how perceptions of safety or threat (not necessarily present-day reality as intergenerational trauma informs current day perceptions) can drive behavior. We discuss ‘safety pie' and how equity means the hungriest person gets the biggest piece and some people might not get any today because they had a lot yesterday and just don't really need it. Nzinga pulled all of this brilliance together into the company she founded & runs, Eleanor Health, which offers wrap-around harm-reduction care for people with substance use disorders. Lest you think she's an idealistic hippie, you have to know that in its first year open, Eleanor Health reduced hospitalizations by 85% for its served population- better than you find with any pharmaceutical. Please listen to this show- the majority of us have people in our lives who have suffered or are suffering in various stages of substance use disorders. Learning how to come correct and that Eleanor Health is available in multiple states across the country is elemental for us to heal ourselves, each other and our communities. https://www.eleanorhealth.com/ http://www.nzingaharrisonmd.com/

Addressing racism is a marathon, not a sprint. Healthcare leaders must be willing to take the first step to initiate heavy conversations that drive progress. Says Dr. Nzinga Harrison, Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Eleanor Health, there is a direct correlation between someone experiencing weathering (a "fight or flight" physiological reaction) to them possibly developing health problems like high blood pressure, obesity, cardiovascular illness, depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, and more down the road.
