Thora Halldórsdóttir and Kristín Sigurdardottir, join us to talk about the key findings from the study they led in Iceland that provides the first nationwide, population-based estimate of incidence and prevalence of autism, ADHD, and co-occurring autism-ADHD in young people without intellectual impairment.

There's a new giant isopod, and it's named after Darth Vader - Bathy-normouse! We get excited about Beryllium-10 and ponder neutrinos.  But what we are here for today is a very special birthday. »V začetku je bila Beseda in beseda je bila pri Bogu in Beseda je bila Bog.« To je znameniti stavek začetka Janezovega Evangelija. Gre namreč za vprašanje, kaj je bilo tisto, kar je obstajalo pred začetkom sveta, kaj se je svetlikalo, še predno se je porodil naš svet, ki je vendar poln zagonetnosti, lepote in presenečenj? Ali kot danes govorimo, kaj je bil tisti »božji delec«, iz katerega se je vse rojevalo? Je sploh mogoče seči še onkraj samega začetka in biti navzoč v sami Neskončnosti, ki človeka popolnoma presega? Judje so bili prepričani, da je pred nastankom sveta že bivala Thora, se pravi, da je v Bogu od vekomaj postava, zato je tudi človek poklican, da s pravičnim življenjem prihaja nazaj k Bogu ter prek etične pokončnosti seže prav tja do večnosti, do same neskončne Besede. Stari Grki so bil prepričani, da je ta Beseda iz večnosti modrost, zato je treba razmišljati in prek modrovanja seči v neskončnost. Grški krščanski misleci pa so opazovali ta svet, občudovali njegovo lepoto in skupaj z velikim Platonom zatrjevali, da je mogoče seči v začetke sveta, če ljubimo čisto Lepoto. Toda znova smo v zagati, kajti takoj se vprašamo: kaj pa je tisto Lepo, najlepše, ki bi nas popeljalo k samemu začetku sveta in bi nam pomagalo zaživeti večnost že na tem svetu? Gotovo večna lepota odseva v etični čistosti ali v velikem moralnem junaštvu. Prav tako so čistost misli, skladje razuma in reči lepota, ki nas osvaja. Toda renesančni misleci so poudarjali, da je vrhunec ustvarjalnega duha v glasbeni lepoti. Zametke takšnih idej najdemo že v Svetem pismu in tudi pri cerkvenih očetih. To bi pomenilo, da bi bila najvišja Beseda, ki se razkriva kot Božja modrost in dobrota, sama glasba. Potem bi lahko rekli, da dobri in modri Bog ustvarja svet z najlepšimi melodijami. Iz njegove nežne in ljubeče glasbe se rojeva svet, svet poln lepote in harmonije. Sozvočje človeka z vsem stvarstvom izražajo najlepše melodije, ki nas popeljejo v večnost, kjer nas pričakuje Bog, v katerem je že odnos z Besedo, Besedo skladja, sozvočja in nežnih melodij. Zdaj razumemo, zakaj smo ob preprostih božičnih melodijah razneženi, zakaj se nam ob prepevanju Svete noči čas ustavi, zakaj imamo občutek, da se nam božična skrivnost v harmoniji svete družine, iskanju smehljaja otroka, v sozvočju z vesoljem, ki ga prinašajo Modri z Vzhoda, razkriva večna Lepota. Naj nas nežnost teh nebeških melodij spremlja skozi vse leto, ki je pred nami.

"Mother" is a role that takes on many forms as women guide and nurture the human family. While many of us have mother figures we admire in the present day, what about our motherly role models from the past? In this episode, Professor Avram Shannon from the BYU department of ancient scripture and his wife Thora Shannon examine the examples of several mother figures in the Old Testament, how these women shaped and blessed the whole human family and the House of Israel--and why their examples are crucial for us today.
