The latest guest on our Bred a Blue podcast series is former Everton reserves goalkeeper, Jamie Speare. By his own admission, the mention of his name to Toffees of a certain age will only prompt the response ‘his name rings a bell', but in the mid-late 1990s, Speare was one of a number of young goalkeepers waiting in vain for Neville Southall to give them a sniff of first team action! It never happened but Speare and the Blues legend struck up a friendship that has endured to this day. It wasn't all plain sailing initially though. “Neville pushed me to the point that I nearly quit three weeks into the first month of my YTS,” Speare says. “He was giving that much stick out and I really didn't know how to take it. My mum took it up with the Club, but Neville said to me: 'If I didn't like you, I wouldn't bother you,' and I thought ‘fair enough.' “We got on great and still do. He drove all the way from Kent for my wedding, which he didn't need to do.” Speare played youth team football with Graham Allen, Jon O'Connor, Gavin McCann, Jamie Milligan, John Hills, Phil Jevons, Michael Branch, Michael Ball, and Richard Dunne, all of whom progressed to play senior football. Speare came close, but just not close enough. He played in a friendly against Aberdeen, made the odd substitutes bench in the Premier League and was in Joe Royle's squads for the ECWC ties against Reykjavik and Feyenoord in 1995. The closest that he got to a senior appearance was against Blackburn Rovers, but it wasn't as a goalkeeper! “It was at Ewood Park and Anders Limpar went down injured,” he explains. “Joe had used all his other subs so he told me to get warmed up. Anders got back up, so I never got on!” In this Bred a Blue conversation, Speare speaks openly about being released by Everton and talks us through his subsequent career – which included European football with Cwmbran Town, more than 300 appearances for Accrington Stanley and a short spell at Sligo Rovers. These days, Speare in the assistant manager of Northern Premier League Division One West team Nantwich Town, after being set on his coaching career by a PFA funded course. It's another fascinating story from a young man still involved in football after an Everton Academy upbringing. Don't miss the incredible story of the dramatic and historical Everton message that he mistakenly pulled off the fax machine at Bellefield while waiting for one for himself!

“If only patience were contagious like mumps!” Join Kate and Sheila as they meet an impatient 17 year old, Kit Tyler, who was transplanted from her native land of Barbados to a strict Puritan community in Connecticut. She landed unexpectedly on her aunt and uncle's doorstep with 7 trunks! After the death of her grandfather Kit had nowhere else to go but she'd neglected to give her relatives a heads up. The Witch of Blackbird Pond was Elizabeth George Speare's first Newbery award and it does not disappoint. Readers are transported back to a time in our nation's history that is often a big question mark. When settlers held witch trials where an accused woman had to do the swim test, if she could swim she was a witch, if she couldn't swim she was free from suspicion, but sadly, dead. From beginning to end, readers wonder what the impulsive Kit will do next. She jumped off the boat to save a child's wooden doll, she befriended an old widow that the townspeople believed to be a witch, and she started a schoolroom brawl by having students reenact the Good Samaritan parable. However, when her cousins got sick, she worked tirelessly day and night following the doctor's orders to pull them through. When the widow is blamed for the town's sickness Kit runs to her rescue. Who will run to Kit's rescue as she is put on trial for being a witch? Her suitor, William Ashby, who is building a house for his bride to be (he never asked Kit, he just thinks he is too good of a catch to turn down) or the impetuous son of Captain Eaton, Nat, who is also a friend of the lonely widow, Hannah Tupper? When a young girl named Prudence asked Kit why the people didn't like Hannah she replied, “Because they have never tried to get to know her. People are afraid of things they don't understand.” What a powerful statement! Reading can transform and broaden our world, it helps readers understand in an up close and personal way the lives of people in the past, present and even the future. Episode 7 Show Notes I was really excited to finally get a chance to chat with Chuck Frey. We've been in each other's orbits for probably a decade, but we haven't actually spoken until now. We talked about how to use mind mapping for writing, ideas, even project management. It's a great synchronicity because not an hour before I recorded the episode, I was recording an episode with Brett Terpstra and he uses mind maps for writing. Mind blown. Chuck is most famous for the Mind Mapping Software Blog and true to our conversation on using mind maps to improve your writing, he's just released a free ebook—How to Streamline your writing with mind mapping software. I read it ahead of our chat and it's a great primer on getting using mind maps not just to write a book, but how to track and promote it too. In our chat, Chuck mentioned a series of post by Roger C. Parker on using mind maps for content marketing: How to Create an Idea Dashboard to Track Your Favorite Content Ideas: Content Ideas Dashboard for Favorites How to Organize Your Blog Content with A 3-Step Post Tracker Top 10 Mind Mapping Productivity Tips for Content Marketing Success: Mind Mapping Productivity Tips At the end of our chat Chuck started talking about an app called Speare for working with content in a new way. True the all the snafus I had last week recording, I only got part of the conversation downloaded. It's a shame because the tool looks really cool. Essentially, you break content into blocks and those blocks are assembled into a complete piece. I might have to give it a try. As promised in the chat, here are three websites that Grant says are good examples that fellow tradespeople could follow: https://mpplumbingservices.com - this page is an excellent example of how the face of your company is key to building customer trust. Great series of photos of the tradesperson in action. Plus prices on the site let customers know that they can afford the service they require.    http://www.manchester-electrician.co.uk/ - The opportunities to get in touch easily with the company makes it simple for the customer. You can request surveys and quotes with a short, simple process. Very mobile-friendly, too.    https://demolitionmanbristol.co.uk/ - This is a great example of a simple structure with clearly defined pages for each service that they offer, tagged up for their core location which is great for local SEO (search engine optimisation / making your site attractive to Google).  We also chat to James from Depher about his charity work providing free plumbing and heating services to the elderly and others in need. Do get in touch with James if you can donate (money, time or materials) to his extremely worthy cause. We also talk a little bit about the Williams & Co Tool Angel initiative – do check out this story for more info.

Common questions I've heard is “I've literally tried everything to grow my blog and nothing works”. Have a very specific niche, foster a community feel, share and create a belief system that emotionally connects with your community, determine your value, know your why, post consistently, but yet you get no return investment. The key to blogging is ALL about timing. I had a video that skyrocketed in these few months and I 100% know why cause my timing was there. A new app called Speare came out VERY recently late last year about how to plan your writing content. Of course since people were going to be searching for it and applied to my niche, I made a video on it. I was the first person In my niche to make the video meaning low competition and it being highly searched meaning I had more eyeballs to the video. The only thing I regret is holding myself back from uploading it sooner. Never hold yourself back; I promise you if I would of uploaded it sooner, it would have blown up to at least 1000 views tops or more. It's not luck, it's not hacks, ITS THE TIMING! Be at the right place at the right time and that's paramount for really all artists. MY SOCIALS! Dm me for questions, usually write essays, so be ready! On The Left Side: The Funny Football Show

There's dancing in the streets of Newcastle and Leicester and in Leicester as someone gives up, some one storms out, and someone is kicked out. It all means one club has a lost a snake and gained a horse, while another has a Torpedo but no commentator. And it all really happened in the last few days. On The Left Side is written and produced by Ant McGinley and Jim Salveson for Abrupt Audio. The Theme Tune is written and performed by Katalina Kicks and appears with their kind permission. Wednesday, October 19th, 2016, continued The next site I seek is right across the street from the New School on W. 12th St near 6th Ave. The address was number 77, but as you can see, there’s no building with that number here anymore. According to Robin Pokorski of the Margaret Sanger Papers Project, Sanger made her first public appearance here on January 6th, 1916 after returning from her self-imposed exile in Europe to escape obscenity charges. She eventually decided to return and face them, however: her husband had already done so on behalf of her cause the month before, and her chances in court were better now since birth control had become a much more regular topic in the press. I find no record of her talk nor a history of a public venue here. I do find a listing for 77 W 12th St in the Catalogue of the First Exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists, Volume 1, published in 1917. It’s the address of Caroline Speare, who has two pieces of art pictured in the catalogue. Looking through it for more about Speare, which I don’t find, I stumble across an early charcoal work by Georgia O’Keeffe, which is a delightful find. Perhaps talks were held at Speare’s place as well as displays of her art, but I can find no evidence of this at this time. I do find a form letter which Sanger had written the previous day, on Jan. 5th, 1916, to send out to friends. In it, she writes about the indictments against her over her distribution the year before of her magazine The Woman Rebel and its so-called obscene subject matters: the sexual liberty of women and birth control...
