Next in Media talked to Sportico sports media reporter Anthony Crupi about why on demand streaming on Peacock plus old fashioned prime time might work for the Paris Games. Plus his thoughts on NBA rights, the rise of women's sports, and MLB marketing stumbles. Takeaways• The Olympics may not achieve the same live audience numbers as in the past, but NBC could still generate decent ratings by combining live coverage with prime time programming.• Younger generations consume media in shorter, fragmented formats, which may impact their interest in watching live sports events in their entirety.• The lack of a 'big bad' or a unifying narrative in the Olympics, along with societal and political divisions, may affect viewership.• Co-viewing with family members remains a strong factor in sports viewership, but the trend of individualized screen consumption is prevalent among younger audiences.• Traditional media companies are facing challenges in competing for media rights, especially with the rise of streaming platforms and non-traditional advertisers.• The NBA's decision to divide its media rights among multiple players reflects the changing landscape of media consumption and the value of broadcast reach. Networks face obstacles in terms of legal limitations and financial sustainability.• There is a demand for women's sports, but the limited inventory poses a challenge.• Broadcast television is declining, and younger generations have different viewing preferences.• Baseball struggles with marketing and attracting younger audiences.• The media industry is constantly evolving, and there are challenges in balancing content and revenue. In recent years, numerous beloved sports news institutions have been shut down, or dramatically reduced their operations, while digital shows hosted by professional sportspeople, current and retired, have become ubiquitous. Meanwhile, traditional sports journalism—particularly of the type that asks uncomfortable questions of what is, ultimately, a huge and powerful business—has been in decline. Last year, Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, an HBO show that mixed softer features with hard-nosed investigative journalism, wrapped its final season after twenty-nine years on air. Josh Fine was an investigative producer at Real Sports for seventeen years. He has some ideas on how sports journalism can revive itself. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 - the federal civil rights law prohibiting sex-based discrimination in any educational institution that receives federal funding, and giving women the equal opportunity to play sports. Last month, U.S. women soccer players won a $24 million lawsuit against the U.S. Soccer Federation over unequal pay with men's team players, making the historical leap in highlighting the civil rights journey of women across the sports and cultural landscape. But inequity in women's sports goes beyond pay. It also includes access to facilities, fair media coverage, and resources. Today, we discuss what equity should look like in sports and why it's important. We also review how Brittney Griner's detention in Russia again exposes the male-female gap in sports, putting an even bigger spotlight on the inequities that exist between the top male and female athletes in the United States. The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers
We all face them. Sometimes they are dramatic, like the failure of a relationship, or the bankruptcy of a business. And sometimes they are less dramatic, but no less important like a new assignment at work, or an uncomfortable conversation. As humans, we often tend to take action when we feel comfortable the results will be positive. We lean into those things where we know the success rate is high. Today's guest Jason La Canfora was a highly successful beat writer for the Detroit Free Press covering the Stanley Cup winning Detroit Red Wings. But he wanted to take on more. On to the Washington Post covering the NFL and the Washington Football Team. Not bad – that sure looks like success. Next thing you know, NFL network comes calling, we want you to be on camera and be our NFL insider. That's a challenge staring you in the face. So what do you do? The Detroit Free Press was something many would have been happy with and deservedly so. The Washington post? For a beat writer that is top of the pile. But, if you truly want to grow, if you truly want to fly – sometimes you have to get our of that comfort zone, and take on that stretch. That thing you never thought you could reach. Jason La Canfora was ready for the challenge and thrived on camer and leading the NFL news and information gathering at both NFL network and now CBS Sports. Buckle up – this is quite the conversation with Jason La Canfora from CBS Sports.
This week we hear from Sean Conboy, Executive Editor at The Players' Tribune; a sports-focused site that publishes first-person stories from professional athletes. He talks about the process they use to get content from elite athletes, and why the site doesn't shy away from difficult stories and human rights issues, like the ones around the Qatar World Cup. In the news roundup Chris and Peter take a look at a grab bag of media stories from the Financial Times reporting a loss, through the reinvention of Rolling Stone, to the hypocritical hiring practices of the BBC's director general. The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers
Today's question ties into great to this concept for today's question from Corrine in Nevada, As you touched on in one of your previous podcasts, there are many different areas of specializations in both professional and collegiate sports (i.e Sports Reporting, Community Relations, marketing, business operations, analysts, etc). What do you think about people who are working in an area but want to pursue a position in new one? How do you recommend going about it?But my answer will apply for anyone who wants to make a change in their career within the sports industry. So if you are working in sales and want to get into operations, this advice works for you too. Corinne, the first thing you need to realize is that everyone pivots. We all shift and move in our career and try different paths. In fact, according to multiple studies people change careers, full careers, 5-7 times over their lifetime. One report from CNN Money said in the first decade out of college millennials change employers on average 4 times…which is a huge change over previous generations. The reason I bring this up is because the first thing you have to do is remove fear or a feeling of, I can't do this, out of your mind. It's not as uncommon as you think, people change and shift and adjust all the time. We all tend to shackle ourselves with emotional chains that aren't based in fact. Often the first thing you need to do in any career shake up moment, is to convince yourself it's not only possible it's probable.

Heads and Tales blurbHeads and Talestext and drawings by Jim StovallIn his forward to this book, Ed Caudill says:"Jim Stovall writes in the introduction that he is “trying to caricature people.” He succeeds, perhaps ironically in light of the fact that writers themselves are inevitably – sometimes tragically, sometimes commendably, usually unintentionally – caricaturing culture. This collection careens along the gamut from rich and famous to downtrodden and obscure. Some of them, the readers will know. Others, I would take long odds, are unheard of among the perusers of this volume. There any number of lesser knowns whose names are fleeting but whose work is durable, whether in politics, letters, sciences, or elsewhere. Some are masters of other media, such radio or cinema or illustration."Jim Stovall is a former journalism professor who writes and draws obsessively and occasionally inflicts his work onto an unsuspecting and largely undeserving public.

In today's world journalism has become a risky business. Newspapers are closing up shop every day in light of the digital age and in many ways it seems the profession is under attack both figuratively and literally. Reporters are being gunned down in newsrooms and the public is becoming more and more suspicious of the profession as the result of the concept of fake news. Bob Blubaugh is the editor of the Carroll County Times in Maryland and has been in the journalism field first as a sports reporter and now as an editor for over 20 years. He is experiencing these concerns firsthand and yet remains committed to the idea of community journalism and the important role it continues to play in our lives.
