HOF roundball writer and broadcaster Peter Vecsey joins the Captain inside the Lounge for a broad list of topics starting with a breakdown of the Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis trade (spoiler alert: he doesn't agree with Twitter and NBA players on who won the deal). Hoops junkies will be fascinated to learn Vecsey's incredible life story, including how a trip to the Magic Kingdom (not to watch Dwight Howard) literally saved his life, how he fared in a 1-on-1 game against Larry Bird, and which NBA star was his best man. This episode is hoops heaven, with discussion about ABA, NBA and Rucker Park. Daniel Penny for Your Thoughts, NY v Penny trial audio book on Amazon, sample by Matthew Russell Lee here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CY6JNDFD I. A Subway Car Like This One Onto a subway car like this one he got on, a muffin in his jacket pocket wrapped in plastic, a spleen speckled, it would turn out, by sickle cell disease. But that is not what killed him, Assistant District Attorney Dafna Yoran would say. Was it an improper blood choke, or the terror he inspired, in a lady from Park Slope with her baby, a Nike brand ambassador on the way to Rucker Park? Even the Bronx school girls said they were frightened, even if one did later drop the dime on the white man. That was prosecutor Jillian Shartrand's doing, to call the victim by his name and the defendant merely the white man. Of the decedent there was more, not only the mother stuffed in a suitcase but the channeling of Michael Jackson, dreams. Now to see a man lifeless on the subway's floor, liquids flowing out of his pants, his eyes rolling back -- here in the courtroom, a woman starts to cry and the anonymous jurors look over, a lady in a COVID mask, her eyes suddenly big. Another woman next to me is typing loudly, two fingers only, stopping to fan herself and shake her head. It is not possible to know if she is for a guilty or not guilty verdict: either way, she doesn't like it. The defendant sits stiffly straight, not looking at the jurors. A Marine who misapplied the air choke? A racist or a hero or both. The subway door is closing. The story nears its end. II. Today on the 4th of July edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Jazmin Erving, daughter of Julius Erving or as we all know him, Dr. J. To say Josh was psyched to talk to Jazmin would be an understatement. To those of us who grew up sports in the United States in the 1970s and 80s (ahem), Dr. J was an almost mythical figure who transcended basketball and the NBA to become some sort of cultural icon. Muhammad Ali, Evil Knievel, Reggie Jackson and Dr. J dominated the cultural sports landscape with their extraordinary skills that made them icons in during the time of America's bicentennial year in 1976. They were the ‘must see' TV before there was such a thing. Let's just say, if you haven't seen the film The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh, you really don't know Dr. J. We talked to Jasmin about growing up in Philadelphia and what it was like having a dad who was the biggest star in the city and also the entire basketball landscape. For trainspotters, we talk old school restaurants like Bookbinders and random Philadelphia 76er players like Mark Iavaroni and for a more macro view we talk about Julius days wowing them at the Harlem courts of Rucker Park, THE place to be seen one-on-one playing basketball and Jazmin having the run of The Spectrum, home to the 76ers when she was a girl. We also talk about Jazmin's crystal business and perhaps one of the most remarkable stories to come out of the pandemic that we can think of. It's one of warmth, love and humanity that somehow led her to a new business that keeps on growing. So let's hear it, it's Jazmine Erving on this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

Blake Renaud was on vacation in New York when the seed was planted. Blake and her husband, Alex, had been traveling and wanted to stay active while away from home. As avid basketball players and fans of the sport, the couple found iconic Rucker Park. But, it was only after endless run-arounds on the internet and crucial vacation time wasted. Thus, the idea for an app was born. Having a passion to lead healthy lifestyles, the couple had been immediately drawn to the sport of pickleball. While the sport originated back in 1965, it has experienced a meteoric rise to fame in recent years. Just as the goal had been in its inception, pickleball founders Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum wanted to come up with a sport that could keep the entire family busy. Flashforward nearly sixty years, and the Renaud's, too, wanted a sport for all members of the family; moreover, they wanted the flexibility to play with others who were adulting with kids in tow. They now had three children. With the idea to create a community for people who love pickleball, and to ease the access to an app to schedule one's game, PicklePlay was born. Having established itself in the early years of pickleball's insurgence, PicklePlay is now the most comprehensive sports app available. It suits the needs of every age range of player and all skill levels. Hear how plans changed when baby number four arrived; furthermore, hear how Blake continues to tackle the difficult role of entrepreneurship, all while raising her family. As founder and CEO of PicklePlay, Blake is transparent about the risk, uncertainty, and effort that it takes to chase one's dreams in this inside story of starting an app from scratch.
