Full circle with Bence Meijer, more closely connected to Rubber than we all expected. Bence is a musician and founder of the blog Archaic Inventions, dedicated to discovering and contextualizing experimental tape culture from the recent past. ”This mix is the result of a couple of years of gathering material, making selections and remembering the past. After a less rosy period of my life I reconnected with my old music friends in Berlin a few years ago. They helped putting me back on track for the most part. It happened after As Longitude came to play in Amsterdam and gave me a sense of spirit again…. I reconnected to Berlin later on. I slowly remembered a previous phase of being in Berlin during the early 00’s digging for records as a young teenager. Going to Staalplaat, buying Mouse On Mars and The Octagon Man records through town, seeing Miss Kitten set-up for a gig in an industrial warehouse club (but went home before it started because I was too young to stay up too late), going to the old Tacheles (say 2004) where a guy on acid was holding a Death In June picture disc vinyl and a wooden cat statue while spacing out, also I remember well seeing an early interview with Berlin electro-pop unit 2Raumwohnung on the “Lola de Musica” TV program on Dutch television. I was visiting the Russendisko bar-night where I was looked upon weirdly being 14 years old entering the place after midnight (was it at Sonnenallee…? Not sure anymore, so much layered histories intertwining). In short: reconnected to Berlin I remembered many things about a music feeling I had forgotten but that had been part of me. It all came back into me with the energy and velocity of some type of karmic 90’s boomerang within a framework of a seemingly renewed sense of love and appreciation. I’m born in The Hague and grew up closely to the Bunker Records scene. Jan Duivenvoorden (the musical brain behind Unit Moebius and one half of Leuk & Ko) was always a good friend of my father. We used to go on Holidays to Hungary together in the 90’s (I’m half Hungarian): me, my parents and Jan and his back-then girlfriend. An intimate video documentation exists of one of our trips that Jan made. I remember those days vividly.- Since my return to Berlin in recent times I had to rethink my life, my personal losses and I had to reconstruct and relive differentiated realities to understand where I am now. Luckily back home in Holland I gave it my best shot. I reconnected with Jan after many years, we played some tunes and spoke about life and today’s music world. I also managed to play a live set at the Braille Satellite Festival in Lithuania. A festival organized by my special friends from Berlin and Vilnius. Since a young kid I knew there was not going to be much else than this strange music world. Some people discover parties or something. I never did. It was like this all along because of the older people around me. My music blog Archaic Inventions hopefully testifies to this upbringing. Through the years Rubber has oddly brought together different recognizable musical energies including some of the people I happen to have been connected to. Synchronicities. I am grateful for the Rubber vision and the releases you guys put out! The newest track in this mix is from 2002. This is an ode to Berlin (Germany in general), The Hague and Budapest. Also hidden are some Latin American oddities. Different countries and their musical feeling, manifesting themselves in my memory. A flash of personal remembrance, my impressions of the 90s and 00s, yet now more adjusted to home-listening. This set was recorded at OCCII Amsterdam on May 1st. OCCII is my dearest home-base music venue in Amsterdam that we opened specially to record this mix during the corona pandemic. No CDJ hi-fidelity, but it-is-what-it-is quality, let it - happen, squat-style. Maybe not as great as I thought I would be in selecting tunes but….Rubber Time!!“ Bence Meijer / Archaic Inventions @archaic-inventions
Peter Broderick is a prolific, genre-defying American musician, composer, and producer. He is known internationally for a diverse range of solo projects, collaborations, and compositions for cinema and dance. A gifted multi-instrumentalist who is equally versed in a wide range of styles, Broderick's extensive discography -- on a range of labels including Bella Union, Erased Tapes, Staalplaat, and Beacon Sound -- is appended by a massive list of credits that reads like a who's who of 21st century independent, classical, and experimental music.Growing up in a musical household in Portland, Oregon, Broderick learned to play several instruments. After graduating high school, he became a session musician, contributing violin, banjo, musical saw, mandolin, and other instruments to recordings by M. Ward, Zooey Deschanel, Dolorean, and Norfolk & Western, among others. His self-released debut EP, 4 Track Songs, appeared in 2006. Via his MySpace page, he befriended Danish band Efterklang, and in mid-2007 he moved to Copenhagen to work with the group. That same year, Docile, his first album of solo piano pieces, was issued by Kning Disk. Float (Erased Tapes) and Hope (Bella Union) followed in 2008. While in Europe, Broderick met and worked with a wide variety of composers, singers, and songwriters including Nils Frahm, Greg Haines, Laura Gibson, Yann Tiersen, Olafur Arnalds, and Lubomyr Melnyk.Broderick was by this time an in-demand session player, engineer, and producer, but kept up a steady stream of his own work on EPs, singles, and film scores, and he accepted composition commissions for dance and the theater. Broderick provided half of many split recordings, including 2009's Blank Grey Canvas Sky with Machinefabriek, 2010's Apple Bobbing At ___ with Penelope Joy, and 2011's Glimmer with Takumi Uesaka. In 2010, Bella Union released his full-length How They Are. From 2010, Broderick's level of activity was matched only by the number of requests for his time from other artists. He contributed to 19 recordings in 2010, 12 in 2011 (including Oliveray's Wonders, one of his projects with Frahm), and ten more in 2012. He and Frahm also completed and released the first album of a three-year undertaking entitled http://www.itstartshear.com. (Interestingly, the artist withdrew from having any kind of social media account.) Broderick also issued the EP Two Songs for Banjo and Voice and the single "I Will Play This Song Once Again" b/w "These Walls of Mine" that year.Broderick was equally prolific in 2013. Among the ten recordings he contributed to were Mark Kozelek and Jimmy Lavalle's Perils from the Sea, Melnyk's Corollaries, and Nadja's Flipper. He also issued the Broderick & Broderick EP and the full-length Float: 2013 Addendum, and he scored director Rodney Evans' award-winning film The Happy Sad. The following year saw the artist move back to Portland for a time and play on recordings by Portland Cello Project, Aidan Baker, Sharon Van Etten, and Sean Flinn & the Royal We. Erased Tapes issued the Broderick and Haines split dub offering Greg Gives Peter Space, The Album Leaf (Featuring Peter Broderick) was self-released, and the eponymous Peter Broderick + Gabriel Saloman was issued by Beacon Sound. While Broderick played on over a dozen records by other artists in 2015, his own recording and touring activities were equally intense. He collaborated with French artist Félicia Atkinson as La Nuit to release Desert Television and issued the EPs X Luzern and COTN RMXD and the acclaimed full-length Colours of the Night. In 2016, Broderick cut the stripped-down piano-and-voice album Partners with Tucker Martine. (Inspired by John Cage's writings, it featured a reading of the composer's "In a Landscape.") He also produced Brigid Mae Power's acclaimed self-titled Tompkins Square debut album. The pair were married shortly thereafter and moved to Ireland. Broderick continued his productive work rate into 2017 with the release of All Together Again, which collected his commissioned works from the previous decade. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi PeterBroderick.net

___________________________ DERRY DENATURED Using unconventional recording techniques and studio trickery certain qualities within the Derry soundscape have been highlighted, exaggerated or distorted into something unusual and unexpected – obscuring what was once recognisable and enabling radio listeners to hear the city in a new light. Taking the everyday sounds of the city as a starting point, a series of field recordings selected for their ambiguous qualities were played back to Derry residents; the sounds became increasingly distorted as the sequence progressed. The ambiguity was heightened through a variety of unusual recording processes including extreme close-ups, electromagnetic induction, ultrasound, binaural stereo, hydrophone and contact mic recordings. Additionally, digital processing techniques were used to further ‘denature' these once familiar sounds. Participants were asked to identify, describe and imitate each sound. The resulting 'sound descriptions' were in turn used as briefs to create artificial or exaggerated sounds matching the qualities described by subjects. In the final work, the natural and unnatural sounds of Derry are intermingled in a long form radiophonic sound composition that meanders through the city accompanied by insights and analysis of the sound environment by the people who inhabit it. Club Moral - Live Outtakes (C-90 cassette) A-01 - Oorlog A-02 - Nazis of the Night A-03 - 4 Safe Walls A-04 - Le Locataire A-05 - Hunting Man A-06 - 19 Keys A-07 - Ik Daag U Uit B-01 - Oorlog B-02 - Man Heeft Angst B-03 - Each Man Kills the Thing She Loves B-04 - Hail to Thee Black Prince B-05 - Lies B-06 - Here Lives My House B-07 - L'Age D'Or This is a collection of live recordings throughout Belgium, United Kingdom, Holland and Germany in 1985 and 1986. Some Club Moral classics are included, and some are unique or rare versions of other tracks. Side 1; Oorlog was recorded at the Batschkapp in Frankfurt-am-Main on 24 April 1986. On the way there we blew the engine of our car and arrived some 15 minutes before we were scheduled to play. The support act was a guy called Seewo, with a chainsaw who accidently cut his hand. Nazis of the Night was recorded at the Ambulance Station in London on 1 June 1985, a festival organised by Recloose Organisation. Several other bands played as well. All the time we stayed at the Ambulance Station, we had to block the kitchen where we were supposed to sleep on the floor because a small army of bums steadily tried to break in the door looking for food and other valuables. Our driver slept in his car for three days but still the car was burgled, while we were playing. 4 Safe Walls was recorded at the Berlin Atonal Festival on 17 February 1985. Among other bands playing were Etant Donnés, Laibach, Test Department and Gerechtigkeitsliga. Le Locataire was a performance on the occasion of an AMVK-exhibition at Time Based Arts in Amsterdam on 1 May 1985. Two days later we played at Staalplaat, who made a good cassette from the show there. Hunting Man was recorded at the Jazzbunker in Rotterdam on 30 November 1985. 6de Kolonne also played in this ex-biker hellhole. 19 Keys was recorded in Leguit, Antwerpen on 19 January 1986, a night organised by Hugo Roelandt. It is a rare calling of the 19 Enochian Keys in Dutch. During the night the power failed a couple of times, during our performance the main switchboard finally burned out. Ik Daag U Uit was recorded at AntiChambres in Gent on 13 June 1986. This exhibition and night of performances was an artists' statement against the posh "Chambres d'Amis" exhibition organised by Jan Hoet. In our performance DDV was locked in a metal cage which he pulled over the floor himself by ropes attached to the wall. The sound is produced by contact microphones glued to the metal. Side 2; Oorlog was recorded at the Mermaid in Birmingham on 29 September 1985. A festival organised by Con-Dom, who played also as were Victor/im and Iron Brotherhood. When we showed up at the venue, already three local Teenybop bands were moving in their equipment and setting up the stage. There was a discussion with the Indian owner of the place, and finally he settled for the 'International' bands. Too bad for him only a handful of people showed up and they hadn't expected that kind of noise. Man Heeft Angst was recorded at Vooruit in Gent on 26 October 1985 on the occasion of "Nuit Erotique". It is actually a Dutch version of Therapist Fears and came with a Super8film. Each Man Kills the Thing She Loves is a live cut-up, recorded on the same event. Hail to Thee Black Prince was recorded at Staalplaat in Amsterdam on 3 May 1985. Lies was recorded at the Mermaid in Birmingham on 26 September 1986, it is a poem by convicted murderer Jack Henry Abbott. Here Lives My House was also recorded at the Mermaid. L'Age D'Or was recorded at the Stadsschouwburg in Maastricht on 1 November 1986 as an integral part of an AMVK-installation. All recordings were made by Club Moral and are either binaural stereo or PA-mix recordings. No remixing or re-editing done. 4 Safe Walls and Nazis of the Night are originally by The Parts, lyrics by Erik Vloeberghs.
