Dealing with our own anger habits in a healthy and productive way can be challenging in itself, but what can often be even more difficult is learning how to deal with receiving someone else’s anger in a way that doesn’t turn into a conflict or inspire feelings of resentment. If we leave ourselves unchecked, it can be easy to ‘feed off’ of someone else’s anger. Keeping ourselves grounded when receiving someone’s anger is critical to defuse the situation, but how do you do that? Addiction counselor, trauma specialist, and co-founder of Still Point Wellness, Corey Costanzo, suggests it starts with self-regulation In today’s episode, Corey and I discuss the varying degrees of anger - both giving and receiving it. We discuss how some anger is considered healthy and how we can determine when someone’s anger becomes unhealthy and abusive. We explore ways couples can help their partners defuse their anger. We discuss how my wife, Rainbow, helps me self-regulate my angry feelings by allowing me to vent. We highlight the strategies we use to keep ourselves grounded when we’re on the receiving end of someone’s anger, such as breathing deeply and validating the other person’s point of view. Whether we are its origin or its receiver, we all experience anger throughout our lives. While anger isn’t necessarily “bad,” it is a critical emotion to understand, for what we do with anger has the opportunity to bring our loved ones closer or push them away from us. And like other emotions, we become more accustomed to anger the more we express it without restraint, creating a toxic habit that can lead to contempt in our relationships. Anger becomes more difficult to manage when it becomes a habit, for habits are executed without much conscious effort. Although the anger habit can be hard-wired in a person’s brain, bodywork therapist and Still Point Wellness owner Corey Costanzo suggests that a person can break free from anger’s chains through awareness, conscious work, and education. In this episode, Corey and I define anger as the need to be in control of external factors. We reveal how helplessness leads to frustration and, eventually, anger. We highlight different means of expressing anger in a healthy, non-destructive way. We discuss how anger impacts relationships and creates codependent dynamics in family systems. Once a person recognizes codependent patterns in their relationships, the next important step is to learn how to overcome them. Our friendships can be a source of good modeling and influence our journey through healing codependency in our lives. My friend, Corey Costanzo, is one such friend who encourages my positivity in the world. He is a licensed addictions counselor, bodywork therapist, and somatic experiencing practitioner who owns Still Point Wellness, the premier Esalen Massage and Salt Water Floatation spa in Asheville, North Carolina. Through the years, Corey and I have worn many hats together: as colleagues who consult with one another and as fathers who celebrate each other’s parenting. Codependency is rather insidious: though many people are familiar with the term, they don’t know how it manifests in families and impacts relationships. Awareness, Corey Costanzo stresses, is key to healing it. A lot of people are in tremendous stress as a result of the global pandemic. Some people find themselves falling back to some old behavior patterns that they thought they had already let go. This is what’s called regression: a defensive mechanism for coping with stress. It’s a common phenomenon many of us experience unconsciously. Corey Costanzo - a licensed addictions counselor and good friend of mine - believes that a significant part of managing our regressive responses to stress is mindfulness. Corey is a licensed massage and bodywork therapist, somatic experiencing practitioner, and co-owner of Still Point Wellness, a premier Esalen Massage and Salt Water Floatation spa in Asheville.   Today, Corey and I discuss our tendency to regress when we are under stress. We highlight the different ways regression can manifest in our lives and how they can impact our relationships. Many of us maintain daily practices. They bring us to a state of a balanced and stable mind. For some, that practice is yoga or meditation, while for others, it could be writing morning pages or creating art. For Corey Costanzo, it’s doing didgeridoo meditation sessions. Corey - a colleague and long-time friend of mine - is a master didgeridooist who has been playing the instrument for over 20 years. For over 100 days since the COVID-19 pandemic started, Corey has been hosting 20-minute didgeridoo meditation sessions at Still Point Wellness on Facebook.   Corey is a licensed massage and bodywork therapist, a licensed addictions counselor, somatic experiencing practitioner, and co-owner of Still Point Wellness, a premier Esalen Massage and Salt Water Floatation spa in Asheville. By transforming his morning routine with the didgeridoo to a shared experience with an online community, Corey continues to realize the connection between cultivating personal practices and wellbeing.   In this episode, Corey and I discuss the importance of personal practices. Corey Costanzo is a Somatic Therapist, a Licensed Addiction Counselor, and a Licensed Massage and Body Work Therapist. The secret to love is kindness -- a very simple concept that many people tend to overlook. Take a closer look at your relationships, for example. When was the last time you made coffee for your husband or gave your wife a back rub?   When was the last time you were present and available to listen to what your children had to say?   When was the last time you did an unexpected good deed for someone you don’t know just because you want to be kind?   When was the last time you made a conscious effort to pay attention to your tone and attitude when expressing your feelings or a different point of view?   Today, I share how to be kind to the people in your relationships -- to your spouse, children, even to strangers. I explain the difference between being nice and being kind, the impact that a parent’s kindness can have on their children’s character, and the significance of being kind to yourself. There’s a common expression that says, “You wouldn’t want to marry yourself!” This expression sounds funny to many, but if you look closely, it expresses a deeper issue people face in relationships. Setting boundaries in relationships is usually a challenging topic to tackle, and with good reason. Aside from the fact that the very idea of imposing restrictions between yourself and your partner is hard to define, the act itself can be quite tricky to navigate — especially if you’re afraid that you might offend your partner. What many don’t realize is that setting healthy boundaries won’t tear your relationship apart; in fact, it’ll strengthen it, or perhaps even save it.   On today’s episode, I break down the details of boundary-setting in relationships, from defining the concept to classifying the types of boundaries you need to set. Corey is a man of many talents and wears multiple hats. He holds a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology with a special focus on Somatic Psychology and is a certified Esalen Massage and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. He is a licensed clinical addictions counselor, trauma and anxiety specialist, and mindfulness meditation teacher. Additionally, he is a music therapist as well as a talented didgeridoo player. Corey joins me today to discuss how addictions affect relationships. Andy Bosley is the co-founder of Yellowroot Farm CSA. He is currently studying to become an electrician, focusing on residential solar power. His journey into Men’s Work initially began in 2004. Since then, he has become increasingly involved in projects that impact and improve the relationships men have with other men such as the ManKind Project and the New Warrior Training Adventure.   Andy joins me today to share his perspective on having healthy male relationships and how he became involved in projects like the ManKind Project.
