When two biohackers get together, the conversation is a fascinating and educational experience. In this episode, Wade sits down with fellow biohacker Angela Foster, who was, in a previous life, a corporate attorney in London working a crazy amount of hours. She was driven, ambitious, talented, and made partner by age 30. Can you relate to the hard-driving corporate ladder climber? Soon after her overachieving run, dreams of becoming a mom kicked in. Of course, being a type A, high achiever, Angela thought she could have it all - the high-pressure career in corporate law and the “super mom,” picture-perfect life with her children. The ticking biological clock, along with a sudden physical and mental illness, knocked Angela off the hamster wheel. Burnout threw her into a hospital bed. Her entire journey is an incredible story to hear - Angela was at one point on several psychiatric medications for bipolar disorder. Angela realized that recovering from burnout was going to require two things: patience and perseverance. She also figured out how she needed to make a dramatic career pivot - from attorney to biohacker coaching. Although she was great at being a lawyer, Angela discovered that practicing law was not her passion. Through her physical ordeal and learning how biohacking could help her recover and feel good again, Angela found her calling: coaching high achieving women how to stay healthy and energized while balancing a successful career and love-filled family life. Angela is a sought-after speaker to large corporations. Her talks inspire corporate executives to optimize the health and wellness of their employees. Angela is also the host of a top-rated alternative health podcast called the High-Performance Health Podcast. In this podcast, we cover: How Angela went from lawyer to biohacker Angela's struggles with depression and suicide The difference between chronic fatigue and burnout How Angela got off of psychiatric medications The critical role spirituality played in Angela's total healing Why the law firm was unfulfilling for Angela and why she loves life now How Angela shifted her mentality out of law into developing a holistic health process for her clients The first thing Angela has her clients do when starting their wellness journey She thought she was bulletproof. Perhaps you are a high achiever and can relate to Angela's story? At one point, after having her first child, Angela was diagnosed with postnatal depression. Here is how Angela responded to this news at that point in her life: “I'm bulletproof. That's exactly what I thought because I always achieved whatever I wanted. I was like, ‘this doesn't happen to me.' The doctor says, ‘You need to sleep more, take naps in the day when the boys are asleep. I said, ‘No. I don't need that. I've run all these deals. I know what it's like not to sleep. I'm fine.” “That was crazy.” “So I carried on. But then my husband took some time off, and then I couldn't get out of bed till like three o'clock in the afternoon. It was like everything hit.” “I called the doctor and, as a type-A personality, I said, “You need to run some tests. Because I can't get out of bed, I must be anemic. Can you check my iron levels, please?” “After the tests, the doctors told me again that I have postnatal depression. I denied it until it finally took me out.” Angela's Spirituality as a Key Component to Burnout Recovery She was suffering from severe mood swings related to the bipolar diagnosis and subsequent medications prescribed. Angela realized that her ability to stop taking medication would be a process - patience and perseverance are needed. Angela knew she needed to first get “sustainable” on medication before successfully dropping it. She determined that spirituality would be required to smooth out her mood swings. The problem was the topic of spirituality caused internal struggles for Angela due to her strict Catholic upbringing. Her father was Lebanese and a strict Catholic. Angela figured out a path that led her away from that religion, yet she became more spiritual than ever. As she developed her spirituality aside from her Catholic dogma, she noticed that her mood swings became much more manageable. As she transitioned off the medications, she figured out that the bouts of depression that occur every time she lowered the dosage were a natural part of withdrawal symptoms. Today, Angela is pleased with her spiritual progress, as she is now medication-free. However, she knows her spirituality is still a work in progress. There is so much more to Angela's remarkable transformation. If you are suffering from burnout or mental health issues, work/life balance struggles, or feel like you're going through the motions in life, you must tune in to Angela! She's a living example of someone who has hit rock bottom, used pharmaceuticals at one point for years, and then was able to walk away from those medications. This week’s rebel spotlight is Angela Johnson Peters, a longtime community activist, associate director of a social justice learning institute, and one of my clients (who could definitely school me in coaching haha). She dives into what’s going on currently with the Black Lives Matter Movement/Protests and how the past feeds into today’s moments of injustice and systematic racism. Sharing her own personal story of awakening and pursuing a career with social justice, Angela dives into ways a person can self-educate and how they can lend a hand towards change. In the episode you will hear: About Angela’s background and own self-awakening with critical consciousness while at school at Berkeley. How Angela left her consulting practice to join Social Justice Learning Institute and what the organization does to create a better future. How opportunities are being created for change and that hope can be found during this time of grief. Plus, how to be resilient as traumatizing events and history are revealed. History of past and present socio-economic oppression of black Americans in the U.S. and materials for self-education. How people within the U.S. and other countries are coming together to protest treatment toward black people and standing in unity with Black Lives Matter Movement. What needs to be done in each individual’s life in order to be anti-racist and make genuine connections with people in the black community and people of color. Next steps: what each person can do to be proactive in making a change - volunteering, voting, education, etc. Quotes: “In addition to the grief, and the anger, and the sadness, there is also hope and optimism and feeling like there is real change happening.” - Angela Johnson Peters “The Social Justice Learning Institute is dedicated to the education, health, and wellbeing of youth and communities of color. We do that through training, education, and community mobilization. We empower through education, create thriving communities, and create systems change.” - Angela Johnson Peters “Being in this space, with the Social Justice Learning Institute, has really provided me with not only a community that’s dedicated to hearing voice, listening to voice, we’re an organization that is led by the voices of young people and community members.” - Angela Johnson Peters “People want to know, people want to do something and I understand people wanting to do something. Because that’s what makes us feel alive, so that we’re not disconnected or isolated, understanding that we’re in this together.” - Angela Johnson Peters “The entire socio-economic position of the United States is based on the backs of black, brown, and native peoples. I can remember when I first became aware of all this history and just...it’s so heavy, it’s so much. And the more you learn - it’s like more, and more, and more. How do you get up in the morning? So that’s when resiliency comes in.” - Angela Johnson Peters “It’s important to become educated, but the pain and anger is also what fuels the passion to make the change.” - Angela Johnson Peters “Being anti-racist is actively calling out racism and doing something to dismantle white supremacy.” - Angela Johnson Peters “The movements of social change are accelerated because of moments like this [George Floyd’s lynching/murder] but there’s never been a moment like this because there’s never been such a worldwide acknowledgement that Black Lives Matter and we have to do something.” - Angela Johnson Peters “You can’t talk about equity and black people achieving, not only their potential but achieving their due, if you don’t address the economics.” -Angela Johnson Peters “You can’t really address what’s going on today without looking at what’s gone on for generations” -Shereen “It’s difficult, and people are scared or people don’t want to say the wrong thing, but you have to do something. You have to start.” -Angela Johnson Peters Awaken the Rebel Podcast Resources:Are you inspired to take action? Angela Porter specializes in providing guidance to people with addictions, relational troubles, mental health problems, and codependency issues. Her impressive 25-year career as a professional therapist in California encompasses trauma and addiction treatment, self-care workshops and consultations for therapists as well as international BREEMA workshops for professionals in the medical and healthcare industries. After serving as a Program Director at the New Bridge Foundation’s substance treatment program in Berkeley, she is now a group facilitator at Bayside Marin’s substance abuse treatment program in San Rafael and maintains an active private practice in both San Rafael and Oakland. Angela joins me on today’s episode to discuss the art of confrontation — why we shouldn’t fear it, how we should do it, and why it’s important to confront not just others, but ourselves. She shares her experiences in working with people suffering from addiction, mental health issues, and emotional problems, as well as one life-changing moment that imparted upon her a lifelong lesson. In addition, she and I take the time to talk about our own friendship, and how our commitment and desire to connect by embracing the truth in ourselves has allowed us to help each other grow as individuals and as professionals. “You don’t feel safe because of inner conditions — because you’ve stopped listening to your own truth, and you’re looking for it outside of yourself.” - Angela Porter This week on Relationships! Let’s Talk About It: The various ways to confront people, including yourself, in a manner that’s kind yet clear. My friendship with Angela, and how confrontation plays a positive role in it. The underlying desire for connection and transcendence in every relationship — and how that need is only fulfilled by the presence of truth. The extensive work that Angela has done in dealing with people and helping them stand up with truth. A powerful, truthful moment that we shared during a rather memorable workshop. Expectations in a relationship, and how the need for confronting people’s truths plays into those. Angela’s experiences with her partner with regard to confrontation. My personal experience where I confronted someone with a powerful truth, resulting in a very positive outcome. A unique and difficult experience involving a client that taught Angela a valuable lesson. Confronting people with their positive attributes, instead of their negatives and what they lack. The word “confrontation” itself, its power, and its impact. Understanding that whatever you’re doing right now is NOT who you are. What an apology really means, in the context of self-confrontation. How Angela walks people through the sense of discomfort that comes with confrontation. How the truth is actually a holistic experience. The self-loathing and fundamental brokenness at the heart of every human being. How we can’t really “teach” each other anything — and what we CAN do for each other, instead. We have a truly inspiring guest on the show this week. Angela Henderson started her first business from scratch whilst working full-time and raising children. She is an author, entrepreneur and business consultant, while her previous career as a mental health clinician has enabled her to be insightful about the human meaning of the business journey. See some of Angela’s top tips below: ** Strive not be the smartest person in the room. You can learn so much from others. ** Websites don’t need to be pretty, they need to WORK. An e-commerce specialist is more valuable than a designer. ** Selling is just like picking someone up in a bar. You don’t immediately jump in bed with them! You have to nurture that relationship. ** When it comes to content, think quality not quantity. Two good articles per month is better than four rushed articles. ** If you can’t take care of yourself then you can’t take care of your business, your kids etc. Look after number one! ** It’s okay to fail, but fail fast. Don’t waste too much time on products that don’t work. In this episode of Business Brain Food you will learn: ** The power of networking ** How to refine your sales process ** The importance of blogging ** The power of chatbots ** How Angela balanced motherhood with business ** How to spot mental health problems in yourself ** Angela’s three top business tips Resources mentioned in this episode: ** Do you have what it takes to be a Business Excelerator at Max My Profit? Lightbulb Moment: Business Breakthroughs and Personal Discoveries with Becky Mollenkamp
Growing up, Angela Greaser learned that you graduate high school, go to college, get a job, then work your way up in the company. That was the right thing to do. Doing your own thing wasn’t the right, safe, and stable thing to do. When her first daughter was born, Angela wanted to stay home at least part of the time, and started doing some online work to help pay for student loans and household extras. But it wasn’t the right fit. Her husband, Dan, was always going to be in his corporate job, because that’s what you’re “supposed to do.” But it wasn’t the right fit. Eventually, the pair realized the right fit was combining their business superpowers and starting a business together. Their leap of faith paid off, and their company is growing by leaps and bounds. More in this episode: How Angela integrated her graphics design, marketing, and copywriting skills into her side hustle, and how that work eventually served as the starting point for the couple’s company. Her mindset shift from doing a job so others could pay her, to having her own company where she paid herself. The family’s relocation, with a 3-year old and an 8-months-pregnant Angela. The move from just doing marketing work for clients, to coaching them on business structure and procedures. What finally happened to bring Dan out of the corporate rat race and into All The Ops. The fallacy of stability. What about health insurance for a self-employed family? How to determine what’s worth it, what’s the worst thing that could happen, and what’s the best thing that could happen. Analyzing whether you and your partner should work together. Angela Greaser is operations strategist and co-founder of All the Ops. When she's not busy systemizing and streamlining business with her co-founder/husband, Dan, she's soaking up nature in the Maine woods with her two daughters and two crazy dogs. Today's topic is one of the most important tactics that we've shared on the podcast but it's not the latest hack or social media marketing strategy. This week's episode is all about reprogramming your beliefs at a subconscious level. Overcoming mental blocks and diving into your subconscious can be a daunting challenge but that's why we brought Angela Anderson into the hot seat. Angela is a PSYCH-K facilitator who has over 20 years of experience helping people radically upgrade their personal and professional lives by helping them reconnect with their deepest desires, reprogram their beliefs at a subconscious level and then taking deliberate and focused action. This episode has a ton of great information on getting into the right mindset and shifting into new beliefs that you don't want to miss! In this episode we talk about… How beliefs at a subconscious level can interfere with our lives and our ability to have success in our business The true meaning of the mind and body connection and how it relates to entrepreneurial success How Angela's approach is a little different from just changing habits and gaining more confidence The most common struggles that Angela sees from her clients Links to Resources: Angela's website: http://angelaanderson.life/ Book: Biology of Belief - https://www.amazon.com/Biology-Belief-10th-Anniversary-Consciousness/dp/140195247X The Wellness Business Podcast Facebook Page - https://www.facebook.com/thewellnessbusinesspodcast/ Karen's Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/emaillistbuildingforcoaches/ Kathleen's Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/healthcoachpeers/ Kathleen's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/kathleenlegrys/ Karen's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/karenpattock/
Welcome to episode twenty-nine of the Honest Mamas Podcast! Today, we speak to Angela Jia Kim. Angela Jia Kim’s passion for beauty began with her mom. “Koreans are obsessed with their skin, and my mom always had something new sent over from her sisters in Seoul,” she says. “I would play with her creams that were filled with ingredients like gold and silkworm cocoons.” Angela spent her early career as an award-winning concert pianist, until one day, onstage in front of hundreds of people, a so-called natural lotion she had applied made her break out in hives. Horrified, she began to study ingredients and craft her own skin care products in her kitchen. “I added luxury ingredients with tremendous skin benefits like champagne, caviar, and truffles,” she says. “I infused them with organic extracts for anti-aging results.” She started gifting these products to friends, and they wanted to buy them as gifts for their friends. She became the “accidental entrepreneur.” "I wanted to incorporate the Korean beauty rituals that I grew up with. But as a busy mom and wife living the gorgeous chaos of New York City, I needed flawless skin in a New York minute. And it must be organic and it must work." Now Angela runs a group of holistic facial spas in New York City's West Village and Upper West Side, and in upstate New York. She continues to develop luxe organic products in the Beauty Kitchen with her team of Savor Spa Estheticians. Her Dollars & Scents initiative hires moms who need flexible work hours for their children. They make and ship the beauty creams fresh from the Hudson Valley in New York. Angela Jia Kim is a former concert pianist, wife to a Swiss man who loves to brew craft beer in his spare time, and mom to a second grader CEO and a yellow lab named Ella Fitzgerald. They live in New York City's Upper West Side. What you’ll hear in this episode How Angela became involved in and an active member of the Savor community Why the spiritual element of the Savor community was helpful for Angela The mindset and philosophy of give/give/get The importance of community and the role it plays in the work/life balance Knowing that it’s ok to ask for help and using that as a source of strength Ways in which to grow your business if you have a family The need to balance self-care and spiritual nourishment Resources http://www.angelajiakim.com http://www.savorthesuccess.com https://www.youtube.com/user/savorthesuccess

“I think that it’s more important in college to go after things that you truly love, have fun, and just to experience the most that you can.” - Angela Ma In this episode we have Angela Ma. Angela and I connected over an article she wrote titled “I Have a Problem with the Nation’s #1 High School.” In it, she discusses the issues of hyper competition and focusing on winning things that don’t matter that’s rampant at Thomas Jefferson high school, but also at elite high schools and colleges in general. We discussed the harmful effects of this extreme competition and how it’s led to students learning less and created a toxic learning environment, and what students who find themselves in it can do about it. But we also spent a lot of time discussing depression, Angela’s experience with it as a student, and her willingness to share her experiences publicly. She’s written about it publicly a number of times, and as a result, received a lot of inbound from other students experiencing similar emotions. We covered: The issues of hypercompetition and achieving things that don’t matter. Techniques you can use to manage depression in life and school. Issues that create negative and stressful learning environments for students. Becoming more comfortable with who you are as a person and choosing what makes you happy. In this week's podcast, I interview the lovely Angela Lockwood. Angela is an occupational therapist, author of two published books and motivational speaker. At a young age, Angela had her career path mapped out and dedicated her youth to sport, hockey to be specific. As a child she had her sights set on the Sydney Olympics, determined for this to happen. However, life had a different plan for her and after fracturing her skull during a game her experiences learning to talk again and re-think her approach to life inspired her to change her path to occupational therapy, propelling her into a career she feels was made for her. Things can happen in our lives that we are not necessarily ready for and it's what you do around these decisions that can make a really big difference In this podcast we discuss: How Angela overcame a life hurdle that set her on a new career path What business doors have opened for Angela since writing and publishing two books Is technology controlling you? Setting boundaries about how you work around technology Business is very much a risky game if you're only ever driven by how things 'feel' or by 'data'. When you can have the two working side by side you can make really good decisions

This week on the Moms With Dreams podcast, we’re talking about the hot topic of public speaking. Women often tell me how they want to speak and get paid, but they’re afraid to put themselves out there. I remember how scary it was the first time that I spoke in front of an audience. So I thought it would be neat to have Angela Lussier, an award-winning speaker, three-time author, two-time TEDx presenter, and trainer join me on the podcast. Angela is the founder of the Speaking School for Women, an online program that trains women to become paid speakers. She is also the founder of the Speaker Sisterhood, a network of speaking clubs for women, and the host of Claim the Stage, a public speaking podcast for women. You’re going to love Angela’s bubbly personality and gain a ton of value from our conversation. During this episode, you’ll learn: How Angela became a speaker on purpose but a paid speaker by accident What she did during her first 6 months in Toastmasters The truth about what you must do to become a great public speaker, get over your fear of public speaking, and improve your presentation skills The steps Angela took to book 16 workshops in 5 minutes and 32 workshops on her 2nd day in business! Why Angela thinks rules shouldn’t apply to brand new speakers What you can do as a new speaker to get comfortable on stage The #1 reason why business owners (especially new ones) should be speaking How to find speaking gigs (thanks to my listener, Cheranissa Roach, for asking this question) Why you should start out with unpaid speaking gigs that add value for your target audience What should be included on your speaker one sheet Angela’s Tip for Improving Your Presentation Skills Videotape yourself then watch it in 3 different ways: Watch without sound so you can see your facial expressions and body language. Listen without watching so you can hear what you’re saying Watch and listen at the same time to see how it all comes together Angela’s Recommended Reading: Purple Cow, by Seth Godin. According to Angel, this is “a great book about marketing, standing out and taking risks so you can become that person or company that people remember.” Angela’s Parting Words of Wisdom “Stop waiting - start creating. The longer we wait for opportunity, the longer we wait to start, and the more time we’re wasting. We need to get started now. Then you can start experimenting and the adventure begins.
