In many schools today, students hesitate to give class presentations — not because of stage fright, but because they're afraid of being secretly recorded and mocked on social media. Principals across the country are spending their time managing the aftermath of incidents sparked by viral trends like “Ship or Dip” posts. Physical altercations between students are often filmed by bystanders and shared online, amplifying the harm. In this episode, Dr. Ruston visits a middle school in Washington State and sits down with Principal Zach to explore what happened when phones were allowed on campus — and how things changed dramatically once new policies were put in place. Zach shares the powerful transformation his school has experienced, and how restorative practices are helping students learn healthier ways to resolve conflict. Dr. T and Truth Fairy welcome guest Gil Bar-Sela to the podcast to talk about his work as a psychedelic guide, facilitator, and trainer working with individuals, couples, and groups. Gil weaves modalities like generative somatics, compassionate listening, and archetypal work into the more ancient medicine ceremonies. Gil shares his personal journey with Dr. T and Truth Fairy and engages in thoughtful discussions about psychedelics and healing. Gil shares that when he moved to the United States after being raised in Tel Aviv, Israel, he had his first opportunity to deal with the trauma lodged in his body. That led him to ask questions about conflict, the root causes of conflict, trauma, and intergenerational trauma which put him on track to explore all those issues. He also began his own personal healing process around his queer identity. This experience and questioning led him to the studies and practices he engages in today.  Truth Fairy, Gil, and Dr. T talk about how self-awareness is what first leads to healing work. Having a sense of what we need can lead us to the right kind of work to be doing. Gil talks about the building blocks necessary to become a good guide which include ethics, pharmacology, and onboarding clients in a responsible way. The conversation highlights Gil's own strong sense of guidance and understanding of the different types of medicine available for healing individuals which also includes psychedelics.“You have the psychiatrist, you have the psychotherapist moving into the space that are very rooted in the Western psyche, but are also lacking usually in terms of connection to spirit, to more expansive practices, to ancient wisdom. And so I think, in particular, the role of the underground guide can be to merge the two worlds. Because we're not here and we're not there. We can be bridge builders. The training that I lead is very much focused on that.” - Gil Bar-Sela__About Gil Bar-Sela:Gil has trained teams and businesses to invoke a thriving work culture. He has inspired audiences of thousands by speaking at colleges across the country on topics such as the power of listening and gender equality. He has collaborated with the leadership team of Seattle's Restorative Justice Initiative, creating community-based, non-punitive solutions to conflict. He co-leads annual delegations to Palestine and Israel with The Compassionate Listening Project, an organization dedicated to empowering individuals and communities to transform conflict and strengthen cultures of peace. He also coaches privately, and leads workshops and retreats globally.Gil is a Certified Trainer with the Heart Math Institute and a Certified Facilitator with The Compassionate Listening Project. He has also trained at Susan Scott's Fierce Conversations, Dominic Barter's Restorative Circles, Core Energetics, META (Mindful Experiential Therapy Approaches), Cortiva's 1,000-hour massage therapy program, and shamanism.Website: GilBarSela.com__Contact Punk Therapy:Patreon: Patreon.com/PunkTherapyWebsite: PunkTherapy.comEmail: info@punktherapy.com

What is Restorative Justice? Where did it come from, and how is it used? First, we hear about a formal process - how the Restorative Justice program was implemented in Estes Park, CO, through the police department. Bill Gerritz and his wife were facilitators for several years. Bill shares the legal process, how negotiations happen, what the consequences are, the reconciliation process, and expectations. Next, he opens up and shares some stories about how justice was better served, how lives were changed, issues were resolved, and discusses the many benefits for the community. In the second section, Irene Morgan and Debbie David share their experiences and discuss the history from different cultural perspectives. They share how Restorative Circles and principles of restorative healing can be used community-wide in crisis and conflict situations, intense street situations, and most importantly, in the courtroom and across the community. The Coalition members have developed programs as we learn from Indigenous wisdom, cultures, and practices. Called by different names, the goal is the same – forgiveness and accountability in the space of compassionate justice. Listeners will discover that the goal is to restore people to wholeness as fast as possible. The process often involves forgiveness even as it heals the hurts that come when people recognize, take responsibility for, and compensate for harms caused. It is critical in the process to recover dignity, discover the impacts and ripple effects, and then work together to find just solutions.

For over 30 years, he has been passionate about helping others master the art of communication and compassion. His deep desire to help others seek healing and find direction in their lives led him to pursue training in several fields such as Non-Violent Communication, Radical Honesty, Restorative Circles, and Permaculture.   Steve joins me again to elaborate what non-violent communication is, what it looks like, and the different ways to show it. We discuss the concepts of Evolutionary Psychology, Mismatch Instincts, and Negativity Bias and why the latter is the greatest cause of human suffering. We also share helpful tips and tools to overcome Negativity Bias as well as how to change this habit so you can improve the quality of your life and your relationships.   “The more we focus on gratitude, the more we’ll have neuro-pathways for gratitude and the more inner peace we’ll have. The more inner peace we have, the better the relationships we will have. It just becomes an upward spiral.” - Steve Torma      This week on Relationships! Let’s Talk About It:   What is Non-Violent Communication (NVC). The “honesty” part of the NVC Model. The distinction between a need and a request. Examples of the four parts of the communication model in a real-life situation. The two types of requests in the NVC World. The kind of request that helps most people work through a conflict. Why making a connection request is crucial before making an action request? The significance of being curious and interested versus listening to judgmental self-talk - even during conflicts. Why curiosity is important in conversations. What empathy deficit is and why many people are operating on it. The concept “Interrupting a conversation to bring it back to life.” The root behind the impulse of talkaholics. How to make it easier for people to hear feedback. Defining Evolutionary Psychology and its relation to a person’s responses. What are Mismatched instincts? Identifying one of the most obvious types of mismatched instincts. The main mismatch instinct that hampers human beings. The ratio between positive interactions and negative interactions for a relationship to be sustainable. Explaining the concept of Unchosen Nature and how this explains a person’s impulse to look for what’s wrong. Why you should make a list of the ten most memorable positive moments in your life. The chain reaction that happens in your body when you choose to feel gratitude. The power of choice and changing your belief system. How negative awareness and thoughts are part of the healing and growth process.    Resources Mentioned:   Episode 10: Non-Violent Communication     Connect with Steve Torma:   The REAL Center Email: info@therealcenter.org   Sponsored by Still Point Wellness   Still Point Wellness is Asheville’s premier spa experience. R010 Non-Violent Communication   Steve Torma is the co-founder of The REAL Center, an organization that has been committed to encouraging compassionate relationships since 2007. He is the former President of Earthaven Ecovillage in Black Mountain, NC, and was a core faculty member for The Asheville Tantra  School. He has established a thirty-year career of helping countless people find healing, direction, and meaning in their lives through his mastery of Non-Violent Communication (NVC), Radical Honesty, Body Electric, Cuddle  Party, Restorative Circles, Permaculture, and Creation Spirituality.     Steve joins me today to discuss non-violent communications and how being in sync with our feelings can help us better understand our needs and gain insight on why we make the decisions we make. He explains how our relationships are affected by how well - or how poorly - we know our own feelings, particularly in the way we translate our thoughts into words. He also briefly touches on the four gateway feelings in his line of work — anger, depression, shame, and guilt — and what each of those things really means for the individual.   “Thoughts are obviously important, but to be able to communicate what’s in your body — that kind of aliveness is one of the main things that creates connection.’” - Steve Torma   This week on Relationships! Let’s Talk About It:   Learning how to feel exactly what is going on with your body. The profound difference between thinking and feeling. Having a solid emotional vocabulary. Starting with feeling awareness, and realizing that feelings give us important information. Understanding why we make the choices we make — why we feel what we feel. Distinguishing between needs and wants by learning how to feel one’s needs. How — and why — the foundation of a dysfunctional relationship is not knowing your partner’s needs. How to effectively train people to be more attuned to their feelings. The definition of self-directed neuroplasticity: Why it is possible for people to change. Why pain is NOT suffering. The four parts of the training process for non-violent communications. Creating a connection between two people through the verbalization of feelings. The significance and power of acknowledging what and how we are feeling. The value of understanding the thoughts behind your anger.  The meaning of feeling a “sweet pain.” Understanding the basic principle of NVC. Healing shame by realizing its roots.
