Last Sunday, a man reached out to the Real Men Feel page on Facebook and said - I would like to appear on your show and debate "cultural appropriation in MKP." That man, B Crittenden Freeman, is my guest today. Crittenden has been a member of the ManKind Project for 30 years holding multiple positions, Center Director, Elder, Leader In Training, and Recording Secretary for the MKP USA Board. He was responsible for the occurrence of the 1st NWTA Urban Adventure.  Initially, I thought this subject had been played out. I've done two shows about it, but they were me alone, and I did ask for people to step forward and discuss this with me. So, here we are. I don't think we are on opposite sides of any issue for a brawling debate, but let's find out. To follow our conversation, you'll need to know a few acronyms; MKP is the ManKind Project, NWTA is their New Warrior Training Adventure weekend, and LKS is the Lodge Keepers Society, the group within MKP responsible for building and running sweat lodges. Topics and Questions 1:22 - Could you lay the groundwork; what is the controversy around cultural appropriation and MKP? 4:55 - Andy's experience of the NWTA in 2016 5:38 - Have indigenous people claimed MKP has been ripping them off from the beginning or only recently? 6:25 - What happened last year to make this a big issue and result in changes? 7:55 - Andy was ready to staff an NWTA last fall, but MKP halted everything. 9:51 - The millions being made. 13:14 - How MKP learned to put on sweat lodges. 16:56 - The shadow elements of the situation. 21:20 - Cultural appropriation in the melting pot of the United States. 23:57 - Are you good with the outcome but oppose the communication around it? 26:01 - With the changes made, are you in or out with MKP? 30:24 - What's your ideal scenario for resolution? 31:45 - Andy's experience with the updated MKP weekend. 33:45 - What drove your 30 years of participation with MKP? 36:42 - Tell me about the first Urban NWTA. 41:43 - Anything else you want to share? 42:57 - How can people connect with you? 43:37 - Is there a way to get off the limited activities list? Returning to the New Warrior Training Adventure | ManKind Project's NWTA

Real Men Feel

Last weekend I was in Connecticut to staff the New Warrior Training Adventure weekend, a weekend-long rite of passage for men from the ManKind Project. This was the first NWTA in New England in three years, thanks to Covid. I was supposed to staff the weekend last October, but all the NWTAs across the US were halted due to charges of cultural appropriation. The charges of cultural appropriation were from a group of Native American elders called Spirit. I'm not going to rehash everything here. Visit the blog post for this episode at RealMenFeel.org, and I'll have links to every article and video I mention. When I discovered that all NWTAs were canceled, I was shocked, disappointed, and hurt. My NWTA was back in October 2016. There was a lot of Native American ritual and ceremony, and it was presented respectfully, honoring where they came from and giving full acknowledgment. It was stressed how much training ManKindProject (MKP) men had with the Lakota people to learn what we would be doing. There were months of negotiation between the ManKind Project and indigenous leaders. I didn't know when or if NWTAs would return, and I feared a watered-down weekend with no impact. I don't agree with all the things MKP let go of doing, but I also wasn't part of the process and have not had any interaction with the Native Americans who were upset. I do appreciate MKP's attempt to have integrity around the intended and unintended consequences of their training. When the NWTAs were rescheduled, I didn't sign up to staff. I had no idea what the changes were and if I was on board with making any, but as I had previously stepped forward, I was asked to join this staff. I decided to do so because I wanted to experience this updated version of the weekend and see if it was still as powerful and was something I could recommend. I intentionally did not promote or invite anyone to last weekend's training.  Real Men Feel's history with the Mankind Project goes back a long way. The ManKind Project, with Boysen Hodgson, Episode 26, September 6, 2016 New Warrior Training Adventure Weekend Report, Episode 32, October 24, 2016 I've also had many guests who've done the NWTA and are part of MKP. Sometimes that was part of the show, and sometimes it was something I learned afterward. Back to last weekend, I staffed my first NWTA since 2017, and I did so because I wanted to fall in love with the weekend again. I wanted to find that despite any changes, regardless of my opinion about them, this is still a powerful, potent weekend that I can recommend to men. It is.  I was flying high for days knowing there were 25 new men in the world. Men with vision, meaning, and mission. Men who have grown, healed, and reclaimed their Gold. I wanted to staff this New Warrior Training Adventure weekend to see if it was still something I could heartily recommend to men. YES Do it. Don't look for details about what happens. All of my videos are safe because I share my experiences without sharing details of what is done. You will go on a hero's journey - let that be enough of a description. If you've done the weekend, I highly recommend staffing it. You'll get wins and insights at another level. Make new friends and perhaps reconnect with old ones. Cultural Appropriation | Misappropriations and The ManKind Project

Right now, I should be volunteering at a New Warrior Training Adventure, a weekend event run worldwide by the ManKind Project. But a couple of weeks ago, Oct 11 to be exact, it was canceled by MKP USA. All the planned New Warrior Training Adventures, NWTAs, were canceled in the US for the rest of 2022. The cancellations were due to charges of cultural appropriation from a group of Native American elders called Spirit. First off, let me clarify that I am a middle-aged white American man. I have no insight into what it means to be Native American, or any other race or culture for that matter. I am sharing my opinions and asking questions. I am not representing any other individual or group. And I'm willing to be wrong about everything I think I know. When I discovered that all NWTAs were canceled, I was shocked, disappointed, and hurt. My NWTA was back in October 2016. There was a lot of Native American ritual and ceremony, and it was presented very respectfully, honoring where they came from and giving full acknowledgment. It was stressed how much training ManKindProject (MKP) men had with the Lakota people to learn what we would be doing. I thought cultural appropriation meant taking something from another culture and claiming it as your own. MKP never did that in anything I was involved in. Nobody in MKP claimed to have invented the sweat lodge or any other rituals I took part in. The sweat lodge seems to be the main point of contention, but it is just one of many different events that make up the NWTA weekend. My brief research found that many cultures have used sweat lodges for purification, healing, and relaxation. Most commonly known are Native Americans, but also the Mayans, Aztecs, and across Europe as early as the 5th century. https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Sweat_lodge MKP Statement included: "A public campaign against the ManKind Project over concerns about cultural appropriation launched in the evening of Oct 6, 2022. One aspect of the campaign encourages public protests at NWTA locations across the country. The locations of our events were published. After assessing the content on the website, it became apparent that to proceed would put MKP participants and volunteers at risk." America is a melting pot of hundreds of cultures. Borrowing from other cultures is inevitable; it can be positive. To me, it is the evolution of society. Centuries ago, people came to North America and saw natives as less than. The letter from Spirit (https://www.spiritprotection.org/letter-to-mkp) makes it clear that native people are still hurting. To me, MKP has been trying to honor the native practices they use, but it is not seen that way by all native leaders. You can do the right thing and still have it be the wrong thing. Earlier this year, the ManKind Project USA published a statement, “Acknowledging and Evolving Our Relationship with Indigenous Peoples and Practices.” Note: NWTA events continue to happen outside of the US. I've spent a lot of my life believing that being free meant being without responsibilities. Admittedly … it's incredibly childish! And the older I get the more clear it becomes that there is a dialog running in my brain all the time … between the adult me and some version of me that's 2 or 5 or 11 years old … and man … he does not want responsibilities. I don't think I'm unique in that … seeing the world as a place where I get to choose whatever I want and damn the consequences … ‘F' em if they can't take a joke' and ‘he who dies with the most toys wins' There are ways that our culture reinforces this kind of living … without integrity … a cohesive binding that makes something whole …  in subtle and not so subtle ways every day. And we can find lots of role models to look up to. Maybe there are other ways to understand freedom … and to embrace integrity. William Grace Frost has come to understand freedom in a different way. He has had some profound awakenings into what a life of integrity looks like, one of which happened on the New Warrior Training Adventure. He's taken his experience as a professional athlete, as a highly trained coach, and as a student of multiple wisdom traditions, and used it all to create a process called the Men's Freedom Formula … In this episode we talk about integrity, accountability, and freedom … William brings incredible gifts of wisdom and presence … and he also brings a gift … see below.Learn More and get the free gift Men's Freedom Formula Website: https://www.mensfreedomformula.com/Men's Freedom Formula Graphic: https://bit.ly/3e7ZFLLMen's Freedom Formula Blueprint: https://bit.ly/3CzWExfSubscribe/Rate/Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: >>>HERE

My guest today is Bill Kauth, the resident visionary and co-founder of The ManKind Project, one of the most recognized men's organizations in the world. In 1984, Bill was working as a psychotherapist when he conceived and co-created the New Warrior Training Adventure. Since then, over 75,000 men in 12 countries have completed this neo-initiatory experience. In 1992, Bill also authored one of the first books for starting and running effective men's groups: A Circle of Men. In our episode today, he shares about these early days of what became the mythopoetic men's movement, including reaching out to Robert Bly during the heyday of Iron John. Bill shares some of the hard lessons learned along the way, what inspires him about the current generation of men's work, and the alchemical power of holding space for men to open their hearts to each other. Also: this episode is released in tandem with my forthcoming interview with Jason MacKenzie, one of the co-founders of Sacred Sons, a more recent men's organization that grew in part from the soil of The ManKind Project. I've chosen to release both conversations in sequence, in order to offer a portrait of the similarities and differences between the generations. Support this podcast http://patreon.com/ianmack

Brandon Clift is interviewed on the Dare To Dream Podcast, where he shares the many lessons gained from life since discovering men's work.  During the fourth round of a sweat lodge during a New Warrior Training Adventure, Brandon realized that his life wasn't working. Despite early success in business and regular exposure to men's work, he realized that he was doing what society "expected" of him instead of following his true calling. That calling came in the form of abandoning the "expected path," and within 12 weeks, he had sold everything that couldn't fit into a suitcase. In the four years since leaving his life in Australia, Brandon has become entrenched in the world of men's work, where he now acts as a conduit and bridge for men looking to find deeper meaning and connection. Key takeaways from this episode: What it means to "be a man" should be unique to the man asking the question. Many live their lives based on the expectations of those around them versus following their true life's calling. There is no "shortcut" to doing your work. Try as hard as you may, there is no escaping the necessity for men to do the deep work. Follow The Dare To Dream Podcast: HEREShare Your Feedback: brandon@brandonclift.comPlease Leave an iTunes Rating & Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: >>>HERE

Six years ago, while staffing a New Warrior Training Adventure, I met a Man that I know I've known for many lifetimes.  His name was Les Gaines, and unfortunately he passed away almost two years ago.  I miss this Man dearly and can remember the many conversations we have had that were healing, educational, and uplifting for both of us at various points in our life.  Several weeks ago, I saw his wife posted a memory of Les playing with his Daughter, and I got so emotional thinking of his spirit and wisdom, and wanting others to be able to hear his voice and his words.  A day after this, I was cleaning out my email inbox and came across a file Les shared with me, and when I opened it, it was a conversation we had four years ago.  And I got emotional again after hearing it.  After listening to it, I was floored at the wisdom that Les shared about leadership, healing wounds, and laying our "baggage" to rest to fully embrace all that we can be.  I knew this was something more people get to listen to, so we decided as a Hosting Team to share this conversation.   Key takeaways from this episode: When acting on purpose, be mindful of your associationsBe intentional What does it mean to be a mature ManBless and acknowledge your woundsIf you identify as  a BIPOC (i.e. Black/ a Person of Some Obvious African Ancestry, Indigenous, or a Person of Color) Man, and are interesting in being a part of a safe space for BlPOC men to just be and do what we call “the inner work:” the refining of one's way of living through self-reflection and introspection.  Check out of of the following opportunitiesYou Can Find Out More Here:New to men's work? The ManKind Project Presents: The New Warrior Training Adventure Click here to sign up for The New Warrior Training Adventure The New Warrior Training Adventure: A life-changing 48-hour experience brought to you by the ManKind Project, an international nonprofit organization. The New Warrior Training Adventure is a challenging real-time hero's journey. It's safe, supportive and cutting edge. It is not a retreat, a conference or a workshop. It is unlike anything you've done before. Many men say that this experience is a turning point in their lives, an event that marks the beginning of a new way of being in the world. It is a singular type of life-affirming event, honoring the best in what men have to offer the planet. We are only able to recognize the powerful brilliance of men because we are willing to look at, and take full responsibility for, the pain we are also capable of creating ... and suffering. This is the paradox of modern masculinity, and it is a lesson we are dedicated to learning and teaching. The New Warrior Training Adventure is a modern male initiation and self-examination. We believe that this is crucial to the development of a healthy and mature male self, no matter how old a man is. It is the "hero's journey" of classical literature and myth that has nearly disappeared in modern culture. We ask men to stop living vicariously through movies, television, addictions, and distractions and step up into their own adventure - in real time and surrounded by other men. What we practice at The New Warrior Training Adventure and why: Emotional Authenticity - Because we believe in honesty and wholeness ... we practice emotional intelligence and self-awareness. Personal Responsibility - Because we value integrity and accountability ... we take 100% responsibility for our feelings, and we own the impacts - both positive and negative - of our choices and actions. Leadership Mastery - Because we believe that role models change lives ... we practice highly principled personal, interpersonal, and group leadership. Empowered Mission - Because we value generosity, service, and connection to spirit ... we explore and live from our deepest purpose. Supportive Community - Because we care for ourselves and the generations to come ... we create a place for men from all walks of life to learn and teach in a safe, respectful, challenging, and inclusive peer-network.       "We need emotional expression, vulnerability, and softness in men. We need men as nurturers. What is a farmer if not a nurturer? We need that in our world today." - Boysen Hodgson Listen To Episode 258 As Boysen Hodgson Uncovers: The ManKind's mission as a non-profit and the work they do which includes men's groups all over the US, over 150 global training programs, and The New Warrior Training Adventure. Some of his top influences including David Deida and authors of King, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Masculine, Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette. Why more than ever we need to teach men that they can express their emotions, be vulnerable, and more nurturing. The narrative and division we see in the media focusing on "toxic" femininity and masculinity. Where the phrase, "toxic" masculinity comes from as a counterpoint to "deep" masculinity. "Toxic" masculinity compared to "toxic" femininity in a world of disconnection and the wave of the feminist movement. How today's modern world is affecting men in the workplace, at home, and higher rates of depression and suicide. Epigenetics and long legacies of trauma that has been inflicted on portions of our society. The powerful practices of moving, zen, and sitting meditation. How they use various archetypes to embody different energies during their Men's Work at MKP. Why the archetype, Sovereignty, is so important for both the masculine and the feminine. The power of purpose and how it and the sovereign energy directly impact your life. Where he was at in his purpose, thoughts, and relationships during his 20s vs. now as a husband, father, and part of MKP's mission. Lessons he learned from observing his father's relationships, his own unhealthy relationship, and processing all of that before he could let go and become his own purpose. How men and women can process and connect together and alone through safe spaces. How men can support each other to heal from their past traumas, come to their whole masculine and feminine selves, and realign with women who've also done the work. How "pink collar jobs" such as teaching have created a divide between men and women as far as what careers are acceptable for each gender. How doing men's work has helped him tap into his himself and his inner Golden Child to help the relationship he has with his children grow. Power Quotes From The Show "As a society, we have to slow down, be present, and get quiet. It's only in that quiet that I can hear my soul or that I can create the possibility to hear yours." - Boysen Hodgson "We have launched a campaign, #IAmResponsible, in response to #MeToo. It's not about, 'Hey, Brother - I'm responsible for your actions' but 'I'm 100% responsible for my actions, for creating the type of culture that I want to live in, and for what masculinity looks like today." - Boysen Hodgson  "At men's group, 'breathe' is probably the first and most powerful incantation that I can do with a man doing a piece of emotional process work. Where are you breathing, how are you breathing into your body, where do I see you inhabiting breath into your body? When you stop breathing, that tells me something about what you're going through." - Boysen Hodgson "Both men and women whether individually or in groups, let's trust each other enough to let us do that work. Society has changed and we're not going backward. What the world needs from us as men is different than what the world needed from us then. Let's move toward the evolution of creating beautiful hearts that want to be connected, loved, shared, and protected." - Boysen Hodgson  "The environment has to be painful enough to motivate a man enough to take action. Men will have a sense in their gut that it's time to do something. So, what we can all do as men is to create and hold a space for when you see a man in your life who you know is experiencing that." - Boysen Hodgson "Men will show up. Men are hungry to be healthy influences and role models. We can fix our community by showing up as men. Through #IAmResponsible, we're stating that we are 100% responsible for our actions, for creating the type of culture that we want to live in, and for what masculinity looks like today."  - Boysen Hodgson   Links From Today's Show Boysen Hodgson Facebook Twitter LinkedIn The ManKindProject Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube The New Warrior Training Adventure The New Macho by Boysen Hodgson #IAmResponsible Campaign David Deida King, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Masculine by Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette Dr. Robert Augustus Masters Iron John by Robert Bly The Art of Charm Podcast Dr. Shepherd Bliss The End of Men by Hanna Rosin We Believe: The Best Men Can Be | Gillette (Short Film) Integral Meditation by Ken Wilbur Planet on Purpose by Brandon Peele Amber Ward of Life UnLtd The M21 Guide from Wellness Force WFR 149 Johnny Blackburn   About Boysen Hodgson Boysen Hodgson is the author of ‘The New Macho,’ a credo for the mature masculine. If we were connected, what would you do now?  How do you feed each other's potential?  What are you inspired to do next?  How do I sustain this relationship or how do I even find the "perfect" relationship? Sonika Tinker and Christian Pedersen are the relationship whispers.  When they first met, years back, they knew there was a spark and connection but neither fit their "perfect mate" list.  They ignored the list (it took them about two years) and the rest is history.  Through their program, Love Works For You, they have supported hundreds if not thousands of individuals and couples to connect through love, both for themselves and each other. This is THE podcast to listen to around relationship. Who We Are We are a married couple, husband/wife team, who have devoted our lives to studying and teaching love and relationship, and we are still happy and in love after many years of being together (we walk our talk). Our clients say we are wise, experienced relationship master trainers and relationship experts – we like to think of ourselves as “relationship awesome-izers”. We are the co-owners of LoveWorks, a leading-edge transformational relationship training company, where we daily delight in empowering couples and singles to transform their relationships from stuck to soaring in a fun, positive, and practically useful way. The “Official” Bio This is the bio we are supposed to have on our website, so you can see that we actually are who we say we are, and that we do indeed have degrees, certifications, tons of practical experience and that we actually do make a profound difference for people’s relationships. Sonika Tinker, MSW, foundedLoveWorks in 1990. Sonika is a relationship specialist with over 35 years experience coaching singles and couples on the issues of relationship, communication, intimacy, sexuality, dating, law of attraction and personal transformation. In addition to her private coaching practice, she has designed and led hundreds of live trainings and workshops. Sonika is a Relationship Specialist, Certified NLP ProfessionalTM, Certified Enneagram Teacher, and author of Seize Your Opportunities: Living a Life Without Limits. She has received extensive training and education in communication, sexuality, personal growth and the law of attraction. These include, but are not limited to the Hendricks Institute, the Human Awareness Institute, the Enneagram Institute, Workshops in the Oral Tradition with Helen Palmer, Challenge Associates, Tony Robbins Research Institute, Landmark Education, The Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality, The Center for Stress Medicine, The Option Institute, The Institute for Creative Therapy, The Pacific Center, Awakening Shakti, The Institute for Ecstatic Living, SkydancingTantra, The Relationship Skills Center, and Abraham-Hicks. Sonika is an energetic, inspiring, educational coach, leader and speaker. She is recognized for her deep loving presence, her authentic, candid honesty, her laser insight, leading-edge content and practical tools for change. Sonika’s inspiring teaching & coaching includes humorous and moving stories and exercises designed to motivate and educate, all accompanied by a contagious laugh you’ll never forget! Christian Pedersen is originally from Denmark, but followed “love’s lead” and joined Sonika in Northern California when it became impossible to be apart from his “beloved” for months at a time. Christian is a relationship specialist and Certified Life Coach, and has led over 50 relationship trainings for hundreds of singles and couples on the issues of relationship, communication, intimacy, sexuality, dating, law of attraction and personal transformation. He has a private coaching practice teaching men how to create awesome, satisfying, powerful relationship, and how to “win with their women”. He has received extensive training and education in communication, sexuality, personal growth and the law of attraction. He is a proud graduate of the ManKind Project’s New Warrior Training Adventure and has studied with The Option Institute, SkydancingTantra, and The Relationship Skills Center. He takes special pleasure in guiding men to fuse the best of their masculine and feminine aspects, becoming truly “whole” men in the process! Christian is a gentle, loving, yet powerfully moving teacher. He is recognized for his deep loving presence, heart-felt presentations, his rampant appreciation of others, a playful sense of humor, insightful questions and thoughtful comments. He is remarkably comfortable with his own masculinity and vulnerability, able to be attentive, authentic, and respectfully non-invasive in his work, all the while, seeing the perfection of who people REALLY are. Sonika & Christian have developed a unique practical and positive approach to relationships. A “fun” alternative to traditional therapy, they have designed and teach a profoundly effective system for dealing with conflicts, re-creating your relationship, breathing fire into your sex-life, and freeingyou from a painful, stuck relationship experience. They believe very strongly that the process of improving your relationship should feel fun, light-hearted and intimate,STARTING NOW (not after years of digging through emotional garbage).

Not only were there the issues of many (often immature) egos, but the cultural changes as we’ve moved from a more communal rural existence to a more impersonal urban / suburban one. However, these days there is a growing awareness that the ability to connect, cooperate and collaborate with each other is an evolutionary trait, key to our survival and thrival. Our guests this week, Bill Kauth and Zoe Alowan, have spent the better part of their lifetimes in creative endeavor and service, and seeking to find elegant and effective ways to facilitate functional and nourishing community. Bill and Zoe are co-creators of the committed, non-residential Community they call “Tribe”. Together they have delivered more than 65 seminars around the world and co-authored the book “We Need Each Other”.In 1984, Bill co-founded the New Warrior Training Adventure of the ManKind Project, which has initiated 80,000 men into healthy masculinity, all around the world. He is the author of “A Circle of Men”, published by St. Martins Press, and now has the emeritus role of “Visionary-at-large” with ManKindProject, and sees the profound need for human reconnection.Zoe has lived in community and been deeply engaged in sacred art for decades. As painter, dancer, songstress and storyteller, her work in women’s circles reclaims beauty and wisdom. She facilitates with humor, co-honoring the Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine. In this fast-paced and humorful conversation, Bill and Zoe explain why their community is intentional but NOT residential, and they speak frankly to the challenges of creating lasting community. You’ll find out what Bill discovered as a psychotherapist and how each has addressed and healed their “father wound” and “mother wound”. You’ll learn about the power of the “gift culture” in contrast to the extractor economy, and discover how community and service might be the most effective “anti-depressant” of all.If you’re curious how you can bring this kind of community into your locale, please join us this Tuesday, September 18th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET. : http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/Or, find us on the Wiki archives on Wednesday: http://wikipolitiki.com/archives/Bill and Zoe can be found online at: http://timefortribe.com/Support Wiki Politiki — A Clear Voice In The “Bewilderness”If you LOVE what you hear, and appreciate the mission of Wiki Politiki, “put your money where your mouse is” … Join the “upwising” — join the conversation, and become a Wiki Politiki supporter: http://wikipolitiki.com/join-the-upwising/Make a contribution in any amount via PayPal (https://tinyurl.com/y8fe9dks)Go ahead, PATRONIZE me! We talk about mythopoetic rituals and how to develop deeper, more meaningful relationships. The ManKind Project flies in the face of rigid stereotypes about the "Sensitive New Age Man" AND the "Macho Man". The mankind projects asks men to go right up to the edge - and beyond - in a culture that seems to be comfortable with mediocrity and passivity from men. They ask men to stop living a vicarious adventure through their TV's and step into a real time adventure to win back their passion for life. They ask men to confront the real issues, to get 100% honest about who they are. Some men have a really hard time doing that. Many did too, but  took the risk anyway.  And we'll talk about how life changes for men who begin to approach life differently after experiencing the New Warrior Training Adventure. This conversation goes deep, and caused me to re-evaluate some long held beliefs.  If you like what you hear, please subscribe, rate and review on iTunes.
