Talkin' Fanfic: Cobra Kai
Interview with HeyJulien, Football RPF and Carraville writer

Talkin' Fanfic: Cobra Kai

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 9, 2024 229:30

Summary: Like a bicycle kick goal at minute 95, Sara finally completes editing on a much overdue interview with fellow Carraville author HeyJulien !  Sara and Julien talk about the world of football RPF (as in soccer, for all you Yankees); specifically the delightfully odd-couple rivals-to-lovers ship of English football pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher. Other talking points scattered across the pitch include: football as war, derby days and football rivalry; the joys of local non-league football, the Bundesliga and fußballkultur; to switch POV, or not to switch POV; the annoying beauty of David Beckham; and of course, we discuss the tragically under-utilized in fic friendship of Paul Scholes and Gary Neville (or, Scholesy as the Kermit to Gary Neville's Miss Piggy).  Join us, if you like! Correction - at 03:27:40 we incorrectly refer to our wonderful fellow Carraville author as ‘player1604'-- their handle is player1064, which is a reference to Gary Neville's England legacy number. Gary was the 1,064th player to play for England's National Team.    Contact and Credits: Intro Theme: Kyle Laurin "Oasis Supersonic Theme" (Twitter: @cobrakylemusic) Tumblr: talkinfanfic.tumblr.com  Instagram: @talkinfanfic Email: talkinfanfic@gmail.com    Time caps: 00:10:39 - Chelsea v Liverpool result in the Carabao Cup Final AND “Football and Butts” 00:13:17 minutes - Picking an English team as an outside fan, local rivalry in sport, and the mechanisms of tribalism 00:21:10 - Football pride as a substitute for national pride in Germany 00:22:57 - League structure in european football, the purity of the local club, financial doping, and German “fußballkultur” 00:32:57 - A late introduction to HeyJulien ! Dale and Brian are joined by Stretty News columnist Matt Henderson to reflect on Manchester United's 2-1 win over Brentford. Scott McTominay scored a brace in stoppage time after coming off the bench to force a comeback. Old Trafford erupted and the boos that were heard at half-time were countered by full-time cheers. The lads then discuss Andre Onana's form. The goalkeeper made another blunder against Brentford, although the goal came from a catalog of errors. Brian hits the nail on the head with his explanation on why pundits will focus on Onana but not Liverpool's Allison whenever he makes mistakes. The Brazilian had a blunder of his own against Brighton last weekend. Matt tells us he thinks Manchester United will go all the way in Europe... and then we slapped him with a bit of reality. Furthermore, some chat about the new David Beckham documentary series on Netflix without too many spoilers. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. The international break gives us a little time to reflect, so Iwan, Rich and guest Dale O'Donnell of Stretty News fame reflect on two frustrating performances and look ahead (?) to a Champions League tie with Barcelona. In the early hours of Thursday morning, we appeared on talkSPORT to offer some insight on the showdown between Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba. The station has generously sent over an audio file of the brief segment for Stretty News to share. We just wanted to talk about football and Manchester United, but these headlines are not going away and they shouldn’t go ignored. But, as situations go, this is getting in the way of what matters most. And, that’s the club.United are struggling for results and there is no doubt that Mourinho and Pogba share some of the blame. Neither individual is handling the situation well and it’s acting as another grey cloud over the club.Anyhow, take a listen and let us know what you think. Manchester United suffered a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday. To make matters worse, only five players acknowledged the fans are travelling all the way to Brighton. The rest of the players, who hid at the full-time whistle, ought to be ashamed of themselves. While they're not entirely to blame, we discuss the root of these problems at Manchester United on the podcast and get A LOT off our chest over the course of an hour.Dale is joined by Raman Paul, Paul Rowles and Mike 'The Northern Loudmouth' Knight.José Mourinho will expect another week of harsh headlines and press, but sometimes he has himself to blame for that. Fans enjoyed some of his interviews about the All Or Nothing documentary, created around Manchester City's title-winning season last season, but it doesn't matter unless his players react on the pitch. It's frustrating as United fans, although on the Strettycast this week, we try to analyse the situation without sounding too knee-jerk. Without further ado, put your feet up and listen to our third podcast of the season. There is also a section where we answer YOUR questions, so make sure to submit more for next week.Make sure you follow Stretty News on all social media networks.Twitter: @StrettyNewsFacebook pageFacebook community where our members discuss all things Manchester UnitedBlogEmail suggestions or questions for next week's podcast: dale@strettynews.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Huddled in a corner together crying and shaking we do our best to contextualise what losing 6-0 away to Manchester City really means, and how it changes things at the club, if at all. We also mention the victory away at Tromsø, confirming that we've comprehensively won our group in the Europa League. Dale O'Donnell from Stretty News is our Manchester United guest this week, and Jack and Raj do their best to sound up for another stern test in the league. What matters more, the result or the performance? And would and should a loss be the end of the road for Villas-Boas? Also looking at Sir Alex, David Gill, and summer rumours at United in depth, we prioritised collectively rating just how attractive David Moyes' daughter really is above all else.
