SANDY McGREGOR talks about VACUUMING COMPLETELY NUDE IN PARADISE. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on January 19th 2025. It's perhaps a bit of a strange one this week, or maybe it's just a bit of an obscure one. Anyway, our old pal SANDY McGREGOR got in touch and told me that he really fancied talking about VACUUMING COMPLETELY NUDE IN PARADISE, which seemed an odd request at the time, but, well, you know what they say, live and let live. Anyway, after my initial bafflement, it turns out that VACUUMING COMPLETELY NUDE IN PARADISE is a film for television first broadcast in September 2001 written by JIM CARTWRIGHT and directed by DANNY BOYLE, just under three months after the broadcast of another hard-hitting collaboration on STRUMPET which starred CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON. VACUUMING starred TIMOTHY SPALL in a barnstorming BAFTA winning performance as the aggressive high-performance salesman TOMMY RAG, alongside MICHAEL BEGBY as the reluctant trainee PETE, alongside a whole cavalcade of the kind of appalling characters conjured up to represent the hard-selling cutthroat business of selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door at the turn of the century. What was it that drew SANDY towards this obscure televisual delight, you may well be asking yourselves? Well, theatrical representations of Salesmen had been very much on his mind after he'd recently been watching GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS by DAVID MAMET in the theatre, and, after making comparisons with the rather more subdued American Classic DEATH OF A SALESMEN by ARTHUR MILLER, he decided to complete a trilogy of sorts with this TV movie that, in many ways, ploughs very similar storytelling furrows as the weekly television dramas of PLAY FOR TODAY did in the last century and might very much be considered part of the continuation of that proud legacy, which often made for television that could occasionally be just as shocking and challenging in its own way in perhaps less liberated times. Running at seventy-five minutes, this stylistic, high-octane, and sometimes terrifying tour-de-force pulls few punches, and portrays a seedy, sleazy world that doesn't hold back on the language and attitudes that were commonplace in that sort of business at that time, and, as a very dark tragicomedy, can leave you feeling both tainted and exhilarated by the experience of watching it. Anyway, having hopefully kept his clothes very much on, SANDY joined me to talk about his experience of watching this television curiosity, and I hope you'll stick with us across this next hour despite the hard-hitting nature of the subject matter, and I do hope you enjoy it. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Dan Carlin, podcaster, stand-up comedian, and author, talks about a woman he met years ago while on tour. The woman, referred to as a "strumpet," had an immediate and obvious affect on Carlin.
Roxanne Pulitzer's tales of sordid sexual behavior and drug and alcohol abuse littered headlines around the world in the 1980's. When the Pulitzer Prize Fight was over, Roxanne lost custody of her two children and was exiled from the world of wealth and privilege on Palm Beach. She was known forevermore as "The Strumpet with the Trumpet."

“The Strumpet with the Trumpet.” “Nympho Dyke.” “Cocaine Slut.” “Black-Magic Voodoo Queen.” Somehow, a former cheerleader from upstate New York got branded all of those things by the national media when her wealthy older husband decided to divorce her after six years of marriage. They were not famous (well, sorta). But their marriage coincided with the last gasp of the freewheeling decadence of the ‘70s, so there were plenty of lurid details to air in public. And neither Roxanne Pulitzer nor estranged husband Herbert Peter Pulitzer held back in their Palm Beach divorce trial. After their marriage on January 12, 1976, Roxanne was officially part of the Palm Beach society crowd, and they ushered her into the fold. Unfortunately, it was a fast crowd and both she and Herbert started participating in some things—like cocaine binges and threesomes—that would come back to bite not both of them, but the wife and mother of twins. Eventually, Roxanne ended up humiliated on the national stage, without custody of her sons and with just $2,000 a month in alimony for two years. How did it happen? Mark delivers the dish in this torrid episode. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/american-scandals/support

The writer James Plunkett gave us one of the all-time Dublin classics in Strumpet City. He idealised Big Jim Larkin, seeing in him a living representation of a heroic time in the city in which his own father had played a part. Condemned from pulpit and defended by Behan, this is the story of James Plunkett. The writer James Plunkett gave us one of the all-time Dublin classics in Strumpet City. Harley and KC are back at it, discussing another controversial topic in their unique style. In this episode, they explore the pros and cons of male promiscuity in the gay community. Time Codes: 00:00:32 - Introduction 00:03:00 - Catching up with flu-ridden Gene 00:04:21 - Now #2 00:44:07 - The Strumpet #5 01:11:49 - Barbarella #1 & #2 01:26:56 - Wrap up 01:27:55 - Contact us This week Gene and Derek discuss three recent titles, two of which are anthologies and one a blast from the past. They begin with the second issue of Fantagraphics' Now, edited by Eric Reynolds. As the guys mention, this one is comprised of various comics that run the gamut of art and narrative styles. While some of the contributions are more "traditional" in their storytelling presentation -- such as the pieces by Susan Jonaitis and Graham Chaffee, Ariel López V., Dash Shaw, and Joseph Remnant -- others challenge our understanding of the medium. Short works by Fabio Zimbres, Conxita Herrero, and James Turek are just some of the stories in this issue that experiment with how comics mediate narrative. Next, the guys turn to another anthology, The Strumpet #5. Edited by Ellen Lindner and Glynnis Fawkes, this collection was successfully Kickstarted last year, and the theme of this volume is origins. As Gene and Derek point out, this understanding of "origins" is rather broad, with some of the contributions focusing on origins of identity, origins of awareness, origins of memories, origins of myths, origins of tyrants (Donald Trump, anyone?), origins of sexuality, and origins via birth. This is a transatlantic anthology, with creators from both North America and the UK providing a diversity of story and style. Gene had been familiar with some previous issues of The Strumpet, but this was Derek's first exposure to the anthology. And he is sorry he hadn't discovered it earlier. The Two Guys with PhDs wrap up by looking at a new series from Dynamite Entertainment that brings back a classic, and controversial, figure from the 1960s. Barbarella is Mike Carey and Kenan Yarar's contemporary take on Jean-Claude Forest's legendary protagonist. The cheesecakey emphasis and the eroticism is definitely a part of this title, but Carey gives the space-traveling Barbarella more agency, making her more heroic, and less of a passive vessel, than Forest's original incarnation. The guys discuss the first two issues of the series, the second of which was just recently released, and both Derek and Gene are hooked.

Episode 56 comes from Detroit's Blank Code label founders and DJ/producing duo, PROJECT 313. Composed of Nick Bien and Chad Parraghi, they have been active in Detroit across multiple projects dating back to the 90s. In 2007, they founded the Blank Code platform, focusing mostly on event promotions, with the label coming to fruition 18 months ago. Since then, it has taken off, with them signing a slew of heavy-hitters: their sixth and latest EP, Strumpet, features Drumcell, Material Object and Brendon Moeller. They are also the curators of the Underground Stage at Detroit's Movement Festival in next year's edition, May 24-26, 2014 (in which they already took a big part this year). For the third consecutive year, they will partner up with Droid from LA to deliver another Interface/Scene after-party boasting yet again a breathtaking lineup (their last after party event consisted of 14 acts, across 3 rooms, in just 1 night). Musically, we are proud to showcase their distinct style, characterized by deep and intricate layers of dub, bass, and minimalist techno. The next 100 minutes is a live recording from when they played a live set at Oktave's 4-Year Party in Chicago last month: slow-building and ever-hypnotic, so listen and enjoy.
