Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and some real REAL talk this week. But first: Taylor interrupts Pam's nighttime routine with a late night drop of The Tortured Poets Department. Does it live up to the hype? Did Andrew just confess to murdering former members of the pod? A not-so-fun update in the name of resiliency: Laura shares that she has multiple sclerosis (MS), what her journey to diagnosis looked like, and how she's doing now. What it's like to move through the stages of grief and eventually reach a space of processing through humor. We cover questions from our Patrons to go a little more in depth on Laura's experiences living with a chronic illness. Most important of all, we talk about the representation of MS in The West Wing, Laura's favorite show. As we continue on this journey we call life, we'll face different hurdles that challenge our mental health. How are we all doing? The panel shares what outlets help us get a mental break from the tough shit, and what resources we use to work through it. Journaling, limiting distractions, mid-day walks, crossword puzzles are all things we here at the show use to break up our days and limit stress and anxiety. Pam shares the 4-7-8 Breathing Method as well as the 5-4-3-2-1 Coping Technique This week's recommendations are good for the soul: donate to the Shepherd Center for World MS Day (Laura), Brick to help limit screentime (Andrew), and attending the yearly Record Store Day (Pam). And in this week's installment of After Dark, available on Patreon and Apple Podcasts: "If your dog and a loved one were drowning and you could only save 1, who would it be?" "Umm which 'loved' one are we talking about?" Inspired by a NYT Ethics column, we'll be playing a classic game of 'Would You Rather...?' What's worse? Having legs as long as your fingers, or fingers as long as your legs? (We spend way to much time imagining how this would play out - absolute nightmare fuel.) Andrew hits us with a super secret surprise question... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

[School of Movies 2021] NOTE: War for the Planet of the Apes will be released next week, along with the archived episodes on Rise and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Four 12-year-old boys on a hot Labor Day weekend in 1959 walk from their small town of Castle Rock to find and report the body of a young man hit by a train. What follows is a touching drama about the betrayal of the adult world, and the importance of standing by those whom nobody else will stand by. Back in 1982 Stephen King took a break from supernatural horror to write Different Seasons, a book of four short stories. The Body, which was adapted into this film in 1986 by Rob Reiner, Apt Pupil, adapted by Bryan Singer in 1998, The Breathing Method (which should probably stay un-adapted, but is apparently is an announced project with Doctor Strange helmer Scott Derrickson) and Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption, which wound up as one of the greatest films of all time. This is a double-bill collaboration between us and the Old Kids Movies podcast. We are on their 50th episode this week, talking about Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989). It was great both guesting and having them on our show, and both episodes are excellent listening. As a biohacker, knowing how to breath is a power tool to add to your tool box. The power of breathing goes back to the days of yogis and mystics. But in today's science and as biohackers, we've captured the techniques and the application to be purposeful in its usage. Whether your goal is physiological, emotional, spiritual or mindfulness, breathing and how to breath has been well researched to show improvements and effectiveness. In today's episode, we discussed various methods of breathing, when to use them, why and how. We emphasized the importance of creating awareness around breathing and the emotional regulation through breathing, improving our immune system and also its application to managing trauma. If we think about it, there aren't too many tools we can use that will give a multitude of benefits. If your goal is to manage an emotional state, within the same practice, you receive the same benefits to your physiology as well. If you're unsure of where to start and which technique is right for you, we discussed various methods to choose from and when to apply them. More importantly, becoming aware and tapping into different emotions such as feeling angry, sad, excitement, calmness… When you do this you will realize that each emotion has a very different breathing pattern. Emotionally charged breathing patterns can also impact your mind and body negatively. Daily self check-ins every 2-3 hours throughout the day allows us to become aware of how we breathe and the current emotional and physical state. Biohacker Measurements: Take your measurement before you breathe and then after. Blood pressure, pulse ox., heart rate, etc... If you're doing the 15 day challenge measure it before and after and share your information with us on our facebook group! Breathing methods and Techniques: Wimhoff method (Ice Man) Holotropic breathwork Coffee breathing to wake up: focus on exhale sharp shooting breathes energy coming from lower abdomen, we don't worry about inhale we just exhale 10 times, eyes are closed breath normal again it feels like a sneeze stimulates sympathetic nervous system; don't do too much too often; 3 rounds of 20 in the morning, 3 rounds before you work out, 3 in the middle of the day at 3pm (at that time when you want sugar instead try this breathing exercise Water breathing 4x4 (you can do it all day) use it all day to go back to your balance, like drinking water Whisky breathing 4x8 to go to sleep, heart rate drops, stimulate parasympathetic nervous system) We recommend the book Breathe: Author James Nestor Every day is a step up! Give us your feedback on our private facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/674250196611679/about We love to hear from you!!

Brent Bashera - Wim Hof Breathing Method & Cold Therapy by VOCM
There are so many sensational stories about Wim (Wilhelm) Hof…What is real, what is not...?I have tried out in my life, at least 20 different Breathing techniques for:Boosting the immune system. To let go traumas and negative emotions. To go in previous lives. To relax. To go into hypnosis. To awaken our spirituality… To swim faster and for diving… All of the breathing techniques are good! What breathing techniques are better and for what, I don’t know…It looks so, that every Guru has created his/her own breathing techniques…. And I think we should use the breathing techniques that we love at most or that are fitting to us…If we want to follow up Wim Hof to get healthy, then we should do it… Regardless what other people think. Don’t be fanatical! We never should disregard other health techniques because they are different! I follow up the health techniques that have worked for at least 200years and have given the best results. Because the strategies of the popular Health Gurus worked only partially…Every Health Concept needs vegetarian nonacid food. This is unpopular, because people don’t like to stick to a healthy diet!! Without nonacid food the health concept is incomplete and will not work out in the long run.All of the popular Health Gurus got very rich for their proclaimed health formula that will make everybody healthier! And this was never true! I have tried out also the Wim Hof breathing technique, … This technique will not harm you; it will benefit you! I experienced, to get serenity and tingling all over the body. … I remembered when our swimming teacher (previous trainer of the Olympic water polo silver winner team), trained with us, the very similar breathing technique from Wim Hof, 43 years ago… The difference is, we have done the breathing in and out only 8 times and in standing position… And then we had to dive 30 meters. It works!!!Here the technique: The best is, you do it in the morning on empty stomach 3 rounds or during the day. Don’t do the breathing technique in a swimming pool or when driving a vehicle. You can lay down or sit. Wim recommend to lay down on your back on your bed… Breathe deeply in, as much as you can; start with the belly, then the chest and head. Directly breathe out, but let the air get out by itself… This means you should not squeeze out the air, nor should you breathe out all of the air… You follow with your mind the breathing in and out… If there is tingling in one area you should breath more in that area. You do the breathing in and out 30 to 40 times… up to you.The last breath: You breath in and OUT. Stop breathing. Then you start your stopwatch … You try to reach in the first round 1 to 2 minutes retention of the air… Then you start with your first breathe in fully, hold for 10 seconds and squeeze the air to your head… Next round the same, but you try to get a longer retention time… The third round the same. Your final goal is 2-3 minutes, without air, retention time. First time, I made first round 1:52 seconds, third round 2:37seconds retention time, with 62 years… I hope you do better! My Video: Wim Hof's breathing method. https://youtu.be/Z4y8l0eidVUMy Audio: https://console.aws.amazon.com/s3/object/rudizimmerer/6/Wim%20Hof's%20breathing%20method..mp3?region=ap-southeast-1Enable GingerCannot connect to Ginger Check your internet connection or reload the browserDisable in this text fieldEditEdit in GingerEdit in Ginger×

Chuck McGee is one of the first American Wim Hof Instructors and an expert on all things breathwork. Chuck was a bartender in the Bay Area who had a random patron at his establishment convinced him to try the Wim Hof breathing method. After trying it, Chuck was hooked and has now gone all over the world learning and teaching the power of breath. I stumbled across Chuck from James Nestor's excellent book, Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, and from there attended his free weekly Monday night breathwork class at 9pm PT. zoom.us/j/750599401 Chuck's firm grasp of breathing and his joyful personality fit the mold of my recent podcast themes and he was good enough to come on and talk about the pillars of Wim Hof, his experiences traveling with Wim, the differences between nasal and mouth breathing, the basic structure of a breathing session, establishing consistent breathing practices for real change and the benefits for sick people, healthy people and athletes. Chuck's ability to break down some of the physiology of what happens in breath is must listen material for anyone working to develop health or performance in others. He is someone I could talked to for several hours and I am definitely going to take a trip up to SF to connect further with him. You can find Chuck on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/icedvikingbreathworks/ and at his website: https://www.icedvikingbreathworks.com/about/

Book Vs. Movie Podcast (Replay) “The Stephen King Storytime Bonus Ep Special Guest Juliette Miranda Just a couple of lady podcasters talking about their favorite Stephen King stories “The Breathing Method” & “You Know, They Got a Hell of a Band” The Stephen King bonus eps do so well for us at Book Vs Movie that we decided to have fun with the format and talk about favorite King short stories/novels/screenplays and works that have necessarily been turned into a movie (or a really cheesy one--stay tuned for those coming up!) In this ep, Margo D. talks with Juliette Miranda of the amazing Unwriteable Rant podcast and we have a grand old time imbibing our refreshments (Margo enjoys a nice wine out of a can!) while each discussing one our favorite King short stories. Margo D. starts with the novella The Breathing Method which appeared in the book Different Seasons in 1982. It’s the story that takes place in 1935 and told by Dr. Emlyn McCarron who meets a young pregnant woman named Sandra Stansfield. She is single and determined to have her baby in the most natural way possible and learns the then-new Lamaze method breathing from Dr. McCarron who soon falls a bit in love with her. The ending of this book scared Margo D. so much that she waited 20 years to attempt it again. It has not been adapted as a film yet but is technically in development with director Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange and The Day the Earth Stood Still) attached. Juliette Miranda then talks about one of her favorite king short stories “You Know, The Have a Hell of a Band” which originally appeared in the 1992 collection of rock and roll based stories--Shock Rock which was edited by Jeff Gelb. In this story, a bickering couple (King’s specialty!) are hopelessly lost while driving on vacation. They eventually wind up in a town which just happens to be haunted by the ghosts of famous dead musicians such as Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley, and Buddy Holly just to name a few. Because it is a Stephen King story--things get weird and creepy in no time. There was an adaptation of this story which appeared in the anthology series Nightmares & Dreamscapes and it is--kind of stinky. But it’s also fun and we have a great time discussing what we like about the Shock Rock book as well. Margo D. also talks about her favorite story Shock Rock--Bob Dylan, Troy Johnson and the Speed Queen by F. Paul Wilson. I hope you enjoy this different take on our usual Stephen King bonus eps. The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Breathing. How hard can that be when we are presenting? Funnily enough we do crazy things and create problems where we don't need them. Today we are going to look at how to make sure we have enough oxygen to the brain and enough wind power to drive the vocal chords. Welcome back to this weekly edition every Tuesday of "THE Cutting Edge Japan Business Show" I am your host Dr. Greg Story, President of Dale Carnegie Training Japan and best selling author of Japan Sales Mastery. We are bringing the show to you from our High Performance Center in Akasaka in Minato-ku, the business center of Tokyo. Why the Cutting Edge? In this show, we are looking at the critical areas for success in business in Japan. We want to help advance everyone's thinking so that we be at the forefront, the Cutting Edge, of how to flourish here in this market. Before we get into this week's topic, here is what caught my attention lately. The biggest and most powerful Japanese business federation is the Keidanren. It's chairman Hiroaki Nakanishi recently told a news conference that lifetime employment is no longer sustainable. The link between tenure and wages in japan is one of the strongest in the OECD countries. With lifetime employment the firm is supposed to develop you throughout your career. However, more than two thirds of Japanese workers believe they need further training, which is double the OECD average. Participation in lifelong learning in Japan is in the bottom quarter of OECD members. Also the share of Japanese workers who find training useful for jobs is the lowest in the OECD. In other news, Softbank has used at least five investment vehicles, including the one hundred billion dollar Vision fund to make its mobility investments. Deep pockets and aggressive investing tactics and sweeping vision of the future of transportation give SoftBank and its founder Masayoshi Son and outsized influence in shaping the entire industry. The Vision Fund has more than thirty investment professionals who work to promote cooperation and integration among the portfolio companies, which they refer to as a family. Finally, Japan's greenhouse gas emissions fell one point two percent in fiscal two thousand and seventeen, a fourth straight year of decline. The Environment Ministry said this was a result of increased use of renewable energy. Japan is targeting a twenty six per cent cut by twenty thirty. So far they are at eight point four percent. This is episode number eighty eight and we are talking about What Is the Correct Breathing Method When Presenting Soredewa ikimasho, so let's get going. Breathing is such a natural act and normally, we don't pay it much attention. Some how though, when we are giving a presentation, our breath control becomes a factor of success. One component is our nerves, which are driving the chemical surge through the body, making our heart rate skyrocket, which speeds up our breathing pattern. If we are not breathing properly, we can have mental white outs of the brain, because we are not getting enough oxygen. We can't remember what it is we are supposed to say. We get lost, become panicky and come across as disorganized, unconfident and flakey. Voice is driven on the winds of breath exhalation and lack of breath power impacts audibility. If we don't have good breath control, we can find ourselves squeaking out to the audience in this little voice that says, “I am not confident. I am not confident, I am not confident!”. We might find that our lack of breath control results in our final words of our sentences just dropping away to nothing. We often see speakers kill their key messages, by not supporting the key points with their words voiced with power and conviction. There is no opportunity to punch out a strong message, because we are just vocally doing a disappearing act in front of the audience. It could also be that we are becoming very breathy when we speak. It sounds similar to people who have respiratory illnesses. They always seem to be gasping for breath. Actually they are and so are speakers with no breath control. They simply can't pull in enough oxygen. The lack of breath control gets transmitted to our cadence of when we speak. A lack of air means we are confined to short breathy sentences and the lungs are only being filled in a very shallow fashion just from the top portion. So how do we stop this and better instruct our instrument – our wonderful speaking voice? I am going to pass on what I have learnt from nearly 50 years of karate training, where breath control is absolutely vital. It is the same method used by singers. Controlling our nerves is a key part of breath control, because if we don't, we are working at cross purposes with ourselves. One of the techniques for controlling our nervousness is to go through some deep breathing exercises, before we go on stage in front of the audience. We can do these seated or standing and they don't take very long. Find out more when we come back from the break Welcome backand if you would like to improve your public speaking skills then take a look at our Successful Public speaking course. This is a one day programme and the next course will he held on July eighth. If you want to develop a very high level of speaker skill, then our two day High Impact Presentations course will do just that. Japanese language versions are being held on July tenth and eleventh and later in the year on November thirteenth and fourteenth. The English version will be held on July sixteenth and seventh . The details can be found on our website at enjapan.dalecarnegie.com Back to where we left off. Place both hands on your tummy and just touch lightly. As you breath in, imagine you need to fill the lungs from the bottom most part of the diaphragm. To help us do this we breath slowly and deeply and we can see if we are succeeding, because the hands on our tummy are starting to move forward. This pushing out of the tummy is a good sign, it means we are doing the deep breath sequence correctly. We reverse the process and slowly exhale and the hands are slowly drawn back in. We need to do this slowly, because a bit too much force and speed here and we can become dizzy, as the flood of oxygen to the brain makes us feel lightheaded. This diaphragm breathing is actually how we should be breathing all of the time and I recommend you start the practice and make it your default habit. When we are in front of the audience, they cannot see the breathing rhythm, so there is no need to feel self-conscious. Every breath we take starts at the lowest point of the diaphragm and we sense our tummy being pushed out and then being pulled back in. This is how we should be breathing while we are on stage. Interestingly enough, if we lose the flow and suddenly, the breath begins from the very top of the chest, we will feel our pulse rate pick up, our chest tighten and our shoulders start to rise. This might happen at first, before we can master this deep diaphragm breath control, but don't worry. Just slow the breath down and concentrate on the lower diaphragm and trying to push your tummy out with each inhalation. Once you do this, the cycle will re-institute itself and you will be getting plenty of air. The key is to pick this up in rehearsal. Correct breath control gives us the ability to make the tonal variations which keep command of our audience. We can bring power to words and build to crescendos, when we want to emphasis particular key points. It also helps us to relax and look super composed when we are standing in front of people. That confidence is contagious and our audience buys what we are saying. And that is what we want isn't it. Action Steps Get to the venue early and find a quiet, private place to do some breathing exercises Place the hands over the tummy and check if we are breathing from the lower diaphragm or not Make this method your default method of breathing from now on If you start to feel yourself lacking air, then re-set and concentrate on breathing from the lower diaphragm. This week Kyle and Matthew sit down with comedian Billy Anderson and Taco Bell grandma Becky Joiner to talk about Stephen King movie adaptations. Kyle thinks we're currently in a "Kingassaince." They unpack the different versions of The Shining, which leads to a nice chat about what makes a good movie versus what makes a good book. They also discuss how Kyle and Billy's friendship comes from their mutual love of The Stand TV miniseries. They work through all the classic King adaptations (and a few of the not so classics) and also chat about how the non-canonical Pet Sematary 2 is pretty great. They explore the evolution of King's themes through the decades and how those themes have been addressed in film. Plus, they point out that there is an Annie Wilkes lurking inside of every nerd. They also propose how much cooler it would have been if the second season of Stranger Things had flashed forward to the kids as adults. Finally, they talk about their cautious optimism for the new It movie, and Kyle encourages everyone to check out the upcoming Gerald's Game adaptation for Netflix. THE Presentations Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
What Is The Correct Breathing Method When Presenting?
