The tale is as old as time- do you have regional major gift teams based in the cities they manage, or on campus? Vanderbilt University is rolling out a new initiative they are calling Vanderbilt Regional Hubs. Through these hubs, prospective students, current students, parents, alumni and friends will connect with Vanderbilt through professional opportunities and custom programming. This week, we will learn about how the program has been launched from the leader himself, Taylor. Taylor Wood joined Vanderbilt's Development and Alumni Relations team in November 2018 to manage fundraising for the School of Medicine, including Basic Sciences, and the School of Nursing. In October of 2022, his portfolio has expanded to include oversight of development for the School of Engineering and DAR's new regional development initiative. He previously served in development leadership at the Syracuse University School of Architecture, one of the top architecture programs in the country, as well as the College of Design at the University of Kentucky. Wood is a native Kentuckian and earned his bachelor's degree in English at the University of Kentucky and master's degrees in business administration and sports administration at Ohio University. **Special shout out to Becca Jensen for suggesting this episode and making this episode possible. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/devdebrief/support
Designer, developer, and educator, Alex Coulombe is the CEO of Heavenue, a new high-fidelity cloud platform to connect performers with audiences across the metaverse. He also runs Agile Lens: Immersive Design, the award winning XR creative studio. Alex has always had a passion for purposing emerging technology for creative visions. In 2010 he graduated from Syracuse University with a B. Arch (and Drama minor!) and after working for several architecture firms, when the Oculus DK1 hit the market, immersive tech became his focus. In 2013 while at the theatre planning consultancy Fisher Dachs Associates, he pioneered the world's first use of VR for accurately testing sightlines and adjusting room design based on the results. Other early immersive creations include an equipment clearance checker for Hudson Yards' The Shed, a projection mapping tool for Bravo Media and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and design mockups for the Park Avenue Armory's production of Kenneth Branagh's Macbeth. His work in highly-custom solutions grew and culminated in the formation of Agile Lens. Recent architecture projects include David Geffen Hall, Brockman Hall for Opera, the Statue of Liberty Museum, and the Yale Schwarzman Center. Recent theatre collaborations include the award-winning ghost speed-dating experience Ghosted AR, the Venice Film Festival live VR performance, Loveseat, and the ongoing OnBoard XR One Act Festival. By early 2021, Alex began to focus in earnest building a platform to serve the needs of performing artists in virtual space, and Heavenue was born. The first use of Heavenue was a collaboration with Actors Theatre of Louisville on Scrooge's Ghost Encounter. The show included actor Ari Tarr performing live in performance capture equipment for audiences around the world engaged in a shared Unreal Engine scene through Meta Quest VR headsets in December 2021. The latest show is a reinterpretation of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, The Orchard, which opened June 7. Episode 070: SheBuilds Crossover in Three ActsWhat lessons on change and disruption can we learn from the women who have influenced the industries of building design and construction? To celebrate the 70th episode of Practice Disrupted we've teamed up with our friends at https://www.shebuildspodcast.com/ (She Builds Podcast) to create a very special AEC podcast crossover episode. Tune in to discover how women who shaped the history of the design and construction industry relate to modern themes of change, including: identity & culture; workplace shifts; and disruption in education. https://www.shebuildspodcast.com/ (She Builds Podcast) is a podcast featuring the seldom-told stories of women who build; women whose worth is not taught in schools, but who have shaped the industries of architecture, construction, and development over the last century. The podcast was started by three friends who, after graduating from Syracuse University School of Architecture together, wanted to fill in the gaps in their education and share those with others. Guests: Norgerie Rivas is an Architectural Associate with a Bachelor's of Architecture from Syracuse University. She works for an architecture firm in Houston, Texas. Since before she was riding a bicycle she was making model houses and dreaming of becoming an architect. Norgerie has experience in commercial, healthcare, and retail architecture projects from design through construction. She is also a co-host of She Builds Podcast. She enjoys the process of creating and developing projects, whether they are physical spaces or an internet radio show. With She Builds Podcast, Norgerie hopes to share the stories of women in the AEC industry and to inspire future, new, and experienced people in the profession. Norgerie enjoys bike rides with her husband, sampling craft beers, and playing board games whenever she has a chance. Elizabeth Raar (Lizi) is a licensed architect at an architecture firm in Marin County, California. Originally from Holland, Michigan, she always had an interest in architecture and design and knew that would be her profession by the age of 11. After architecture school, Lizi took an internship at an architectural concept firm in The Hague, Netherlands. In 2014 she moved to San Francisco to take a job at her current firm, which focuses on single-family residential architecture. Lizi loves focusing on making a client's home functional and yet beautiful for them. Now with She Builds Podcast, Lizi is so excited to be sharing stories of women in the industry who haven't been showcased throughout history in the hopes that women will play a more equal part in future architectural history. When not in the office or podcasting, Lizi is most likely traveling the world, salsa dancing, or baking delicious things. Jessica Rogers is a Miami native that now resides in Washington D.C working as a Senior Manager for Program Development at the AIA National Headquarters. There she manages and develops programming and resources for emerging professionals, women in architecture, and EDI Strategies. She is passionate about helping others succeed, elevating the voices of those underrepresented, and creating a more equitable profession. Prior to working for the AIA, Jessica was a drafter at several firms in Tampa and Miami, Florida. She has worked on various projects including single-family homes, retail land proposals, and a Port Terminal for the City of Miami. Jessica attended Design and Architecture Senior High, a magnet art school in the design district in Miami. She loves being creative and trying new things like handling the social media of She Builds Podcast. I've known Micah Fialka-Feldman for many years and we have become very good friends. I am excited and honored to bring you this conversation with Micah as he shares profound and important views on inclusion for people who live with disabilities. Micah is a self-advocate, teaching assistant, outreach coordinator, national speaker, and pioneer who fights for disability-pride, justice, and inclusion. He is part of the first wave of adults with intellectual disabilities who have attended college and has been fully included in school and community. Micah’s disability advocacy has a foundation in the creation of the “Beloved Community” and the notion that “A community that excludes even one of its members is not a community at all.” Micah earned a certificate in Disability Studies from the Syracuse University School of Education in 2015. Micah currently lives in Syracuse N.Y. where he co-teaches classes in inclusive education and disability studies. He is an outreach coordinator at the Lawrence B. Taishoff Center for Inclusive Higher Education. In May of 2014, Micah was appointed by President Obama to President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities. He is featured in the upcoming documentary by Dan Habib, Intelligent Lives. In 2009, Micah won a landmark federal lawsuit, Fialka-Feldman v. Oakland University Board of Trustees, to live in the dorms at Oakland University. After Micah had been accepted to live in the dorms in 2007, he received notification from the university that he could not live in the dorm because of “university policy.” The administration argued that he was not considered a “degree-seeking” student. Micah sued Oakland University for violating his rights. After over two years of advocacy court proceedings, the Honorable Judge Duggan of the U.S. 6th District Court ruled that Oakland University had denied Micah housing based on “prejudice, stereotypes and/or unfounded fear of persons with disabilities.” Micah moved into the dorms in January of 2010.
