Involve facility management from pre-design phase for optimal operation. “It's better to regret something you have done than something you haven't done. The planet is suffering. We seriously need to do something about it. So all of you that are jumping in the green building movement just keep focused, try your best to reverse the harm that has been done over the past years, and always be positive. Also, travel. Did you know that bathrooms and showers – particularly in shared spaces – are a veritable breeding ground for pathogen, some of which we see in the form of mold and the build-up of toxic bio films on surfaces. Body fats and soap scums provide a rich food sauce for micro-organisms such as airborne bacteria Serratia Marcescens, which thrive in humid conditions. We know that people with weakened immune systems are so much more vulnerable to the illnesses associated with infection and let's face it, none of us go into the shower with an expectation that we might get sick. So how do we keep those shower walls clean? Well let's think big – BIG TILES. Porcelanosa have developed XXL Hygienic Ceramic Tiles that are 5 feet long - which means just one piece fits the wall of a shower or tub surround. XTONE Porcelain slabs are 10 feet high which means a floor to ceiling surface with no joints. Why does this matter? Well hygienic glaze will not harbor pathogen and surface impurities are easily removed to prevent build up – it is reassuring to know the evidence - INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS Test ISO 10545 - Resistance to Stains -  has determined these surfaces can be easily cleaned and the most difficult contaminants washed away, greatly reducing the need for aggressive chemicals. Think about this…When we unload our dishwasher our ceramic tableware is sparkling clean, sanitized and fresh to use - again and again. The principle is the same with large ceramic walls - So, when planning the shower surrounds for your facilities please reach out to Porcelanosa. The designer in you will love the incredible options and your specification will deliver the longest & best lifecycle value bar none.

Her personal interest in making manifests through construction as an art form, exploring the juxtaposition of materials and textures in projects which transcend disciplines. Her expertise and experience with sustainability is evident in her work on the Resort at Playa Vista. The green building strategies she instituted for this project led to a LEED Platinum certification, the highest level of environmental recognition. His projects find balance, whether it be between security and accessibility like at the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool and grounds, or design and programming like at Jones Plaza in the Houston Theater District. What's the role of architecture in designing an equitable future?Expanding our equity, diversity, and inclusion series, episode 117 explores the perspectives of LGBTQIA+ architects and designers working to create a more equitable future for all. One of the earliest episodes in this series, “Voices from the Future of the Profession,” episode 016, was recorded in 2020. Since that recording date, a number of anti-LGBTQIA+ bills and legislation have been passed across the United States - risking protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. As architects and designers, we believe there is much more we can do to create safe and inclusive policies and spaces in the built environment and within our communities. We've invited leaders to share their stories and discuss what matters most in this moment of change.Guest Moderator:Dedicated to advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and visibility of LGBTQIA+ architects, architecture adjacent, and design professionals, Sarah Nelson-Woynicz, AIA, is the Founder of Pride by Design. As a Project Architect with HKS, Inc in Atlanta, Georgia, Sarah's professional practice focuses on commercial, mixed-use, and multi-family markets, while also amplifying and engaging in HKS' justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion work. Sarah has served on the AIA Atlanta Board of Directors and currently serves at the AIA Young Architects Forum Advisory Committee, Community Director. Guests:Rajas Karnik is a Project Architect with over 20 years of varied project experience in urban design, transportation, commercial and residential buildings. Raj grew up in India, where he was surrounded by a family of artists. As a child, he spent many days in his father's architecture office and felt it was his destiny to follow in his footsteps. He attended the Academy of Architecture in Mumbai, his father's alma mater, before moving to the United States to pursue his Master of Architecture at Texas A&M University. Raj believes a strong team drives a successful project. It's a combination of personality and communication, but mostly it's about respect. Architecture is one of the few professions where you are literally learning new every day—from different building parameters, to changing client needs and goals, and new consultant teams. He feels that you have to form personal relationships and learn from everyone, so treating everyone equally and with respect is most important.Rajas is also the co-founder and Past President of Build Out Alliance, a non-profit organization that promotes and advocates for the LGBTQ+ community within the building design and construction industry. A lifelong Washingtonian, he lives in Seattle with his wife and two daughters and enjoys playing music and soccer. The Inflation Reduction Act addresses climate action and climate justice to expand conversation surrounding inclusivity and practices.   “I would say working directly with clients who have expressed interest in sustainability, and all of a sudden they realize they can do it. Well good news, we have four candidates who are working in the Architecture Industry. These people are not company owners, they have worked themselves up like YOU and are full of ambition. Hannah Deacon:Since 2019 I have been working as a Project Architect running multiple schemes through all design stages, including 2 projects currently on site. In 2021 I also became a RIBA Student Mentor for Oxford Brookes.Everyday is a constant battle to convince clients and consultants that zero carbon construction is essential instead of a 'nice to have'. This is exacerbated when challenged on my authority and experience as a young woman in a patriarchal elitist environment. My primary action as President would be to enact real change by making the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge mandatory and strip practices of their chartership if they are not showing real commitment to reducing climate change.Benjamin Champion:I'm an architect at Sheehan Nagle Hartray Associates and I qualified in October 2020. Last year I ran for a national council seat and got half-way through the rounds of voting, and I'm currently organising an event for the London Festival of Architecture called ‘Ask an Architect' to raise money for charities tackling homelessness.Muyiwa Oki:Muyiwa Oki is an Architect in the Design and Digital team at construction consultancy, Mace Group. At his previous firm, Grimshaw Architects, Muyiwa was founder and chair of the Multi-Ethnic Group and Allies staff network and an external speaker and mentor for aspiring architects at the Grimshaw Foundation, which exists to encourage greater social mobility within architecture. In the wider industry, he's known for presenting at Practice Clinics focused on EDI leadership and participating in panels, events, and radio programmes on behalf of RIBA. Also, a regular contributor to the next generation of architects as an Ambassador for the Mayor of London: Design Future London challenge. Muyiwa is also co-founder of a design-tech venture called Modulor, focused on making Digital Twins of spaces affordable.Henry Pelly:Henry is a Principal Sustainability Consultant at Max Fordham LLP, an employee-owned environmental design practice.  Henry is RIBA chartered architect and was the Youth Commissioner for Sustainable Development on the RIBA Ethics and Sustainable Development Commission.  He is intent on putting all the recommendations of the commission into action.

The identity of neighborhoods and cities can often be traced to the indelible mark of the built environment. From commercial districts that are primarily marked by large warehouses or railroads to suburban counterparts with wide streets appointed with shopping centers and parks, the infrastructure, building typology, and design have the power to shape the trajectory and development, or in some cases, the disinvestment of a neighborhood. Just as popular eateries can rebrand historic neighborhoods or the addition of a new park can invite new residents and housing, the responsible stewardship of places has the potential to transform communities, build stronger neighborhoods, and serve as a catalyst for economic growth and development.     Sustainable and resilient design, however, requires design that considers the context of its neighborhood—the challenges, history, pain points, hopes, and aspirations of the people that occupy it. On this week's episode of TheSquare Podcast, Tina McKone, Project Architect in Corgan's Education Sector, shares how the power of the built environment shapes community, how resilient design depends on the community-based design, the challenges and opportunities to elevate the collaborative process, and explores the benefits through a case study Corgan participated in called Complete Communities.     #ServingUnderserved #CompleteCommunities #CommunityDesign VISIT: https://www.Corgan.com/   Also connect with us on: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/CorganInc/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CorganInc/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/CorganInc LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/corgan   Video Produced by: Corgan Have Questions? The podcast was started by three friends who, after graduating from architecture school together, wanted to fill in the gaps in their education and share those with others. Jessica Rogers is a Miami native that now resides in Washington D.C, working at the AIA National Headquarters. Jessica attended Design and Architecture Senior High, a magnet art school in the design district of Miami. She earned her Bachelor of Architecture degree from Syracuse University, where she also served as treasurer and historian for her NOMAS chapter. At the AIA, she manages and develops programming and resources for emerging professionals and women in the profession. She is passionate about helping others succeed, elevating the voices of those underrepresented, and creating a more equitable profession. Outside of work, she continues this charge as the co-host of She Builds Podcast, elevating women in the AEC industry through storytelling. Elizabeth Raar (Lizi) is a licensed Project Architect, originally from West Michigan, who graduated from Syracuse University. Currently she works for Polsky Perlstein Architects in Marin County, California on single-family residential projects. She enjoys making a project functional yet beautiful for the client.  Elizabeth is also committed to promoting women in the AEC profession through co-hosting She Builds Podcast . On the podcast, they feature stories of women in history who have shaped the built environment and industry. Elizabeth loves sharing stories of women who haven't been showcased in the past, in the hopes that women will play a more equal part in future architectural history. Norgerie Rivas is an Architectural Associate from Puerto Rico who graduated from Syracuse University, where she served in the council of the Architecture Students Organization. Today she works for eStudio Architecture in Houston, Texas. There she has worked on commercial, healthcare, aviation, and retail architecture projects from design through construction.  She is passionate about celebrating and elevating women in her field through mentorship and advocacy. This led to her co-founding and co-hosting She Builds Podcast , featuring the stories of women who have shaped the industries of building design and construction through history and today. Norgerie hopes to share the stories of women in the AEC industry and to inspire future, new, and experienced people in the profession. Our guest is Hiroshi Okamoto, co-founder together with Bing Lin, of OLI Architecture PLLC, a New York-based practice with offices in Shanghai and Paris, whose expertise consists of civic and cultural structures, education, healthcare, and residential international design. Their approach, attentive to create unique buildings merged with the cultural environment of the site, focuses on contextual studies using physical, digital, and parametric models. Hiroshi will share his experience, over a decade, spent working alongside I. M. Pei, as Site Representative and Project Architect, following many important projects as the Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens, the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha and the Chapel at Miho Institute of Aesthetics in Shigaraki, Japan. He touches some significant moments of his experiential path, until, once established his own practice, he will realize important works, as the Art Museum for the local-born Chinese writer and painter, Mu Xin. Located in the historic water town of Wuzhen, the complex, a 'delicate lakeside addition', embodies an enticing presence, representing a vibrant living portrait of the artist. Again in Wuzhen, another excellent example of Okamoto's respectful, sensible intervention: the North Zone Silk Factory finds a new life becoming a fascinating container of International Contemporary Art, contributing to a new perspective about globalism and localism. Several considerations are reserved to the relation between architecture and art/sculpture, due to the long collaboration between the architect and Richard Serra, leading to the most recent LX Cross Pavilion, attentively studied to the smallest details for hosting one of the famous sculptures, becoming an “art piece” itself.

Please join us this week for "The Creative Show" where we talk to Christina Roughan and Whitney Kraus, two designers who approach the business of design from completely opposite places. Whitney Kraus designs spaces for a future owners she might never meet. She is part of the new development team planning multi-family projects. Whitney has to predict how design is going to set it apart when it finally comes to market. Her clients build new buildings or renovate old ones and rely on Whitney to know what the buyers of those apartments will want years in advance.  Christina Roughan in contrast, is about high-end custom design. She knows her clients and designs for them across a great range of properties. She is equally comfortable designing for her client's country estates in The Hamptons, Telluride and Connecticut, apartments and townhouses in NY, LA, and London and personal luxury yachts in Italy as well as high-end corporate and hospitality properties.Christina Roughan - Roughan (pronounced ROWAN) is the international design firm of acclaimed interior designer Christina S. Roughan. Designing since 1994, Christina's vast experience and keen eye has enabled her to create warm, sophisticated interiors that are timeless and tailored while remaining friendly and approachable. Christina believes that interiors are to be lived in and reflect the people who reside in the space. “Every interior should be functional while remaining aesthetically purposeful and elegant.” Roughan's design portfolio is known for deft combinations of texture and subtle color while combining modern traditional accents to create livable, crisp interiors. She has designed interiors throughout the world and her client range is as diverse as their locations. With a reputation for listening carefully to the needs of clients, attention to detail, and discretion, Roughan has become a favorite of international celebrities as well as design editors at Interior Design magazine, House Beautiful, Elle Décor, CT Cottages & Gardens and AtHome Magazine to name a few. Christina lives with her husband and two daughters in a 200-year-old house in Weston, CT, which is, no surprise, in a constant state of renovation. Whitney Kraus - Director of Architecture & Planning, BHS Development Marketing Whitney is responsible for guiding the design vision and execution for all developments. Combining architecture and design insights with project management expertise, she works directly with developers and their design teams to offer project specific recommendations and advise throughout the design and marketing phases. In her role, Whitney recommends potential collaborations with architects and designers, assists in feasibility, zoning, and massing studies; and helps guide direction on unit mix, floorplan layouts, finishes, amenity programming and sales gallery layouts.  Whitney is a registered architect in New York and holds a U.S. Green Building Council LEED-AP certification. She joined the BHSDM team after serving as Project Architect at Selldorf Architects, where she worked on residential developments, high-end private residences, retail, and commercial buildings. She was responsible for development and delivery of drawings in all design phases, daily management of architectural team members, and coordination with consultants and contractors. She oversaw projects for the William Macklowe Company, CBSK Ironstate, Gagosian Gallery, The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Hauser & Wirth, Yves Saint Lauren, and Aman Resorts. Whitney has a Master of Architecture from Yale University and Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Michigan. Originally from North Carolina, Whitney currently resides in Gramercy Park.

In this episode Emmett Scanlon talks to Conor Sreenan. Conor is the Director of Strategy & Design at Grangegorman Development Agency. Conor's work involves being involved with a dizzying array of design and building projects across this part of Dublin. The Grangegorman Development area is a significant part of Dublin - it stretches from the Phoenix park in the West, to Dorset Street in the west, into Cabra and Phibsborough on the North and down to the river Liffey quays in the south. Much of the building work though is centred on the old Grangegorman Campus hospital and a whole series of new buildings for a range of uses is under construction there. Conor moved to the Agency from Heneghan Peng, one of Ireland's most well know architecture practices, they are the architects who worked on the recent refurbishment of the National Gallery and the last project Conor worked on at that practice was the Museum of Palestine. Avid listenings to the podcast would know Conor wrote a piece about that building t under the Building Me Building You strand of this podcast, and that text was called Building Palestine in which he beautifully sets the scene for the construction site of this project, in Palestine. Conor talks about the move from so-called private to public practice and indeed this anchors much of what we discuss, this artificial binary between the two strands of architecture endeavour and the idea of working for the public good. We start though with the text, and I asked Conor why he wrote it and what it meant. The podcast was recorded on zoom. The bin collection is real. __ Conor Sreenan graduated from University College Dublin in 2001, with an honours degree in Architecture. In 2006 he received a Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Practice and Management, since which time he has been a registered architect. Following graduation he joined O'Donnell + Tuomey Architects as a Project Architect to oversee the design and construction of the Press Auditorium at Dáil Éireann, Irish Government Buildings, Dublin. This project received awards from the Architectural Association of Ireland (2003) & the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (2003). In 2004 he accepted a position with Heneghan Peng Architects, remaining there for 13 years. In that time he led teams across public and private sector projects, including the delivery (2016) of the Palestinian Museum, Ramallah, West Bank of Palestine. The project was a recipient of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland President's Award (2017). The Museum was listed for the Royal Institute of British Architects International Prize (2018), and in 2019 the Museum received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. In Spring 2018 he was appointed as a Director of the Grangegorman Development Agency, with responsibility for Strategy and Design. As part one of the diverse Agency team, and with a variety of design teams and building contractors, he supports the implementation of the Grangegorman Masterplan (c.30ha) for multiple stakeholders. These stakeholders include the Health Service Executive, Technological University Dublin, the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, and utimately the existing and emerging communities within the Grangegorman neighbourhood. __ Music is by Sinead Finegan, played by the Delmaine String Quartet (Philip Dodd, leader). The podcast was recorded on Zoom.

He was a creative soul that needed to be free and just couldn’t see himself confined to being at a desk or cubicle for the rest of his career. This decision saw Geoff’s corporate days short-lived. Through his many travels around the US followed by the UK, Geoff developed his own ideas of what he’d like to pursue. He was a voracious reader and formed Book Rapper (www.bookrapper.com) one of his earlier businesses that shared book summaries from some of the worlds most influential authors, now shared over 100.000 times. Tune in for our first showdown at the AHH corral. Join us as host Laura Davis interviews her husband architect Bob Davis about the differences and similarities between commercial architecture and residential architecture. This episode will be of special interest to architecture students and interns. Please note: No marriages were harmed in the making of this podcast. In this Episode In Episode 74 of The Architecture Happy Hour Podcast, Laura interviews Bob Davis, Project Architect at HDR Architecture, Inc. in Dallas, Texas. Bob specializes in commercial and institutional architecture. He also happens to be our host Laura Davis' husband. Here's what we learned: Architects are like athletes in that different specialties and different sports represent and utilize very different temperaments, skill sets, and interests. Where he lived growing up and what experiences that lead him to choose a career in architecture. Which mentor at Texas A&M University influenced Bob to study critical regionalism. How to succeed as an intern in a large office. What skill sets are good to have in a large commercial office vs. a small residential firm. Two architects can serve different client types, and each contribute in important ways. Notable and Shareable Take Aways Bob has lived in Dayton, Ohio; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Springfield, Virginia, San Antonio, College Station, and Dallas, Texas. All very different areas of the US and all contribute to how he appreciates and thinks about buildings and landscapes. Critical Regionalism is an approach to architecture that places importance on the geography and local culture of the place. Bob was introduced to the concept by a professor named Vincent Canizaro, Ph.D. who now has published several works on the subject and teaches at University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Advice to Architectural Interns: Make an impact and go extra mile to get noticed, you won't get lost as an intern (and be doomed to do toilet plans forever). Everything is important on a job, do the best of whatever you are asked to do. The very best interns don't dig themselves into a hole or hide at their desk. They engage. Every drawing is related to every other drawing. Nothing happens in a vacuum. The best interns realize they are part of something big. Even the most minor details can have huge impact on everything else. Every line on a page means something - be thoughtful about your work. In a residential office you have to do a little of everything, which is also how you learn. In a small residential firm, your mentor is usually the firm owner. As opposed to in a large commercial office where your mentor might be a project manager in your department. Keep ear buds out - listen to everything around you, soak in everything you can learn. Skills of a good architect are universal regardless of specialty: listening, asking thoughtful questions, being resourceful. It's the exposure to different design problems, the desire to serve a different client and community, and the scale of the projects that starts to divide those who gravitate towards commercial vs. residential. If you desire to make an impact on as many people as possible with the public buildings you design, you might be a (future) commercial architect. If you desire to help a family, couple, or individual home owner live their best life in their home, you might be a (future) residential architect. EP22: How do you solve the problem of old-fashioned, limited 2D design briefing in building projects? 'Most people do not know how to read plans, or really visualise the project from a simple document. If we can show our clients a complete 3D look of how the space will feel and work, it solves a huge amount of problems down the line.' Oli is an architect and co-founder of Ackroyd Lowrie. At AL the focus is on using VR to design and collaborate with their clients. Previous to this, Oli spent 10 years working at Architype where he was responsible for developing a modular, timber-framed construction system that was used by several London Boroughs to deliver new Primary Schools and Nurseries. Most recently Oli has spent three years as Project Architect for the prestigious £24m New Junior School for Highgate School in North London. Oli passionately believes in working closely with clients, makers and builders to deliver projects in a collaborative manner. This approach, along with the revolution in 3D printing will change the building industry fundamentally, and Oli is keen that Ackroyd Lowrie are at the forefront of this shift. He has worked on several community self-build projects using this methodology, most notably to build a Biogas plant that provides renewable energy to a remote village from farming waste. Oli is also an artist. His work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy as part of the Urban Utopias exhibition and has been published in Blueprint and FX Magazine. In this podcast: - Designing the new urban - Using VR in a briefing - Interior design packaging Ackroyd Lowrie is based in Hackney, London.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/NicoleBremner)
