Ed Tudor Pole entered punk rock from stage school and always felt he was playing a part. After being hired to act in the Great Rock'N'Roll Swindle, he formed Tenpole Tudor and had a brief and dramatic moment in the sun, all recorded in his rollicking memoir ‘The Pen Is Mightier.' He talks here about … … his “quite posh” ancestry and a great-grandfather bankrupted by the Wall Street Crash. … a “Damascene conversion” to the Rolling Stones and ten hours in the burning sun at their Hyde Park show, aged 14. … being at RADA with Timothy Spall, Imelda Staunton and Juliet Stevenson. … The Great Rock'N'Roll Swindle audition and the “really horrid” Nancy Spungen's striptease. … how everyone's related to Edward 111. … the secret of a One-Man Show – adopt the voice of Will Hay and “let the audience do the work!” … why “most actors are awful people and all crippled in some way” and his time in theatre was “like being a cow in a field of sheep”. … how Stiff's Dave Robinson hated punk and wanted Tenpole Tudor to be a novelty act. … three months with five acts in a coach on the Stiff Tour. … how the success of Swords Of A Thousand Men didn't affect their ticket sales - “it was bought by 350,000 12 year-old boys who weren't old enough to go to gigs”. … why the Tenpole Tudor split broke his heart. … as Socrates said, “the unexamined life is not worth living.”Find out more about how to help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear … surprise paydays like the use of Who Killed Bambi? in the Zero Day soundtrack to accompany Robert De Niro's nervous breakdown. Calling all metalheads out there in podcast land. Have I got the novel and episode for you. John Wray is here to talk about his brand-new novel, ‘Gone to the Wolves', which author Raven Leilani describes as “a love letter to metal that captures both its brutal kinetics and its nearness to the sublime.” The novel follows Kip, Kira, and Leslie Z, three teenagers living on Florida's Gulf Coast in the late 1980s. All three come from unhappy homes, of one sort or another, but forge a friendship centered around their love for metal. If you've been waiting for a novel to come along that treats metal with respect rather than parody, your wait it over. But even if you didn't grow up watching ‘Head Bangers Ball' or hoarding Metallica or Slayer records, there's something in this novel for everyone. In the last segment, Jon Verno, from the Metal Mayhem ROC podcast, and Tom Gigliotti, co-host of Shout It Out Loudcast, school me on several subgenres of metal mentioned in ‘Gone to the Wolves', including death, thrash, black, and glam metal. Any Trouble's debut album on Stiff Records is as catchy and well-constructed as anything released by Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello. Led by Clive Gregson, the band would join the 1980 "Son of Stiff Tour" alongside labelmates Joe "King" Carrasco And The Crowns, the Equators, Dirty Looks, and Tenpole Tudor. Any Trouble's second album, Wheels in Motion, followed in 1981. In this episode, Clive Gregson discusses the band's singing to Stiff, the Son of Stiff Tour, their breakup with the label, and his ongoing project to release an album every month of 2020.
Simon Halfon, the former plugger at Stiff Records who designed sleeves for Weller, the Style Council, George Michael, Astrud Gilberto, the Who, Oasis and many others. Includes carting four bin-liners of chainmail to Top Of The Pops with Tenpole Tudor, the collages of Peter Blake, the magic of Dezo Hoffmann, a sweet letter from Tom Hanks and the fraught tale of the "kamikaze" original cover design for Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1. Tenpole Tudor special with Edward Tudor-Pole in conversation with David Eastaugh Tenpole Tudor formed in 1977 when Tudor-Pole (vocals/saxophone) met guitarist Bob Kingston, bassist Dick Crippen, and drummer Gary Long. They played regularly for several years until Tudor-Pole himself (under the moniker of Eddie Tenpole) came to prominence by appearing in the 1980 film, The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle (filmed in 1978). He was originally billed as a replacement for Sex Pistols singer Johnny Rotten — performing the songs "Who Killed Bambi?", "The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle" and a cover version of "Rock Around The Clock" for the film and subsequent soundtrack — however, managerMalcolm McLaren and the remaining Sex Pistols instead decided to abandon the group and go their own ways.

Ep #001 - Pirates! An Adventure with Scientists with Tom and Felix of Wooden Overcoats In our first episode, we chat about Pirates! An Adventure with Scientists/ A Band of Misfits (depending on where in the world you live) as chosen by Tom of Wooden Overcoats! Tom had never seen it before and chose it to bury a grudge with a former co-worker who said that it was rubbish. We were also joined by Felix from Wooden overcoats, who had no Idea what a Christmas Ham was. The Aardman classic Pirates! (Insert your favourite ending here) tells the story of the “Pirate Captain” and his quest to become “Pirate of the Year” even though he gets beaten every year by better Pirates as voiced by Lenny Henry, Salma Hayek and Hugh Grant. Pirates! is one of the most densely packed films since Airplane!.. and they both have exclamation marks at the end. Scores The Episode #001 crew rated this highly with a 4.2/ 5 so a pretty high standard to right off the bat here at Flixwatcher.
