It's time to revise and expand on a topic that was covered in the series one episode “The Carnival is Over”.  It's the summerof 1970 and England are the reigning World Champions.  The Three Lions are one of the most feared and respected sides in world football.  Some of the stalwarts of 1966 – Gordon Banks, Bobby Moore, Alan Ball, Martin Peters, Geoff Hurst – are regarded as having improved. Sir Alf Ramsey, England's inscrutable manager, has brought in a clutch of new faces – Keith Newton, Brian Labone, Terry Cooper, Alan Mullery, Francis Lee, Colin Bell. England have to cope with the Mexican heat and high altitude. There is also Latin American hostility and conspiracy theories, a hangover from 1966 when England were accused of ‘fixing' the tournament in favour of European teams and against South American teams. A stopover in Colombia goes disastrously wrong when Bobby Moore is arrested after being accused of stealing a bracelet.  England start their campaign with a robust match against Romania.  Then comes the epic, iconic match against Brazil.  It is widely assumed that this will be a dress rehearsal for the final.  England conclude their group programme with a dull game against Czechoslovakia.  After that is the quarter-final against West Germany, another memorable epic where Banks misses out due to food poisoning, but England seem to be cruising to victory at 2-0 before it all goes wrong.Meanwhile back home, Harold Wilson, the Prime Minister, is on the campaign trail, seeking to repeat his own success from 1966 by leading the Labour Party to another general election victory.  After four turbulent years, Labour have move ahead of Edward Heath's Conservative Party in the opinion polls.  However, the World Cup is preying on Wilson's mind.  A populist and a keen football fan, Wilson is taken with a “mystical symbiosis” between the government's fortunes and those of the England team.  He asks his Cabinet colleagues to consider the political ramifications if England were to be knocked out of the World Cup, shortly before polling day.  Wilson's relaxed campaign seems to chime with the public mood.  Labour maintains a consistent lead in the opinion polls, victory seems assured but just four days before the vote, England are knocked out of the World Cup…  TWITTER/X@MatthewOkot@WorldCupRamble Subscribe to World Cup Rambling on your podcast platform.

A native of Great Britain, he spent 27 years as a marine engineer in the Royal Navy before retiring and moving to Philadelphia. That's where he met his wife and started driving motorcoaches throughout New England. Eventually, the couple bought a motorhome and toured America before opting to settle in Florida. He and his wife were attending the Tampa RV Supershow in 2014 when he bumped into Steve Anderson, who was then the owner of Workamper News, as well as Terry Cooper, an instructor who was training RV technicians. Steve and Cooper had a booth at the show hoping to entice people to attend new classes to become RV inspectors. Afterall, people get expensive houses inspected before buying them, so, logically, they should do the same thing with expensive RVs. Geoff agreed and enrolled in the introductory class, which took place in Bushnell, Fla., with inspector-specific courses offered a few weeks later in Daytona Beach. When Geoff completed his training, there were only two inspectors in central Florida. After a few years of working in cooperation with RV Inspection Connection, Geoff ventured off on his own by launching a website and creating his own pricing structure. He started answering people's questions on Facebook and his business grew steadily. Geoff also took additional training so that he could fix RVs and key components on them, such as Dometic, Truma and Aqua-Hot appliances. Over the course of the past nine years, Geoff has completed more than 500 RV inspections. It was 15 years ago when Geoff mentioned to his wife that someday he'd like to get an RV and travel all over the United States. The next thing Geoff knew, they were looking at motorhomes at a nearby dealership. A short time later, they started full-time RVing. Eventually, the couple decided to settle in Florida where Geoff, once again, started driving motorcoaches shuttling tourists around the area. He was technically a Workamper because he and his wife lived in an RV park, but he drove big busses to earn money. He continued driving busses while building his inspection business until his employer at the time imposed some new policies about employment that made him uncomfortable. Fortunately, building the inspection business gave Geoff the option to move into full-time self-employment. Today, both Geoff and his wife are actively involved as inspectors. He zeroes in on the mechanical aspects and exterior condition of the RV, while she focuses on the interior. He also works as a driving instructor to help people learn how to operate motorhomes as well as how to back and tow travel trailers or fifth wheels. Yet, the couple manages to find time to go RVing and even do some Workamping jobs at state parks in Vermont and Texas. In fact, they only inspect RVs about five or six months every year so they can enjoy the rest of the time traveling and holding down traditional Workamping jobs. Former player Chris Honor talks fondly of Terry Cooper who gave him his League debut as a youngster in 1987. Chris is often on Radio Bristol in the commentary box as a pundit and he offers a very candid assessment of how he sees the current squad and its prospects in the season ahead. Chris says a win against Blackpool is essential as, on paper, the other fixtures before the international break look particularly tough.

Phil's now retired and living in Clevedon but for over 30 years his was the voice of Radio Bristol's matchday coverage of Bristol City. He, like myself and other reporters, used to travel with the team on matchdays in the 80s so we got to know the players and manager Terry Cooper who sadly passed away at the weekend. In addition to reviewing City's prospects for this coming season Phil talks with fondness for TC and recalls his selfless act in letting Clive Middlemass and long serving scout Jock Rae lead the team out on to the Wembley pitch on that memorable day in 1986

Today we will speak with a woman who started RVing out of necessity, then fell in love with an RV expert and, together, they operated several successful businesses from the road. Many people may have heard of Evada Cooper, but few probably know her story. She grew up in Texas and started the RV lifestyle out of necessity after she was divorced and needed an inexpensive place to live while raising her teenage daughter, two dogs and a cat. Evada explains why a fifth wheel was the ideal choice for her living situation. After they moved to Waco, Texas, to be closer to her oldest daughter, the girls created a Match.com profile for their mother. Four or five months later, Evada attracted the attention of a fellow who taught RV maintenance courses for a nearby state technical school. That man was Terry Cooper, the infamous Texas RV professor. Once they got married, the couple moved into a small apartment. But, when the economy took a dive in 2009, and the college cancelled the RV tech training program, Cooper and Evada started the Mobile RV Academy and hit the road training technicians in various cities around the country. While on the road, Evada started her own RV cooking show and published the RV Centennial Cookbook featuring easy-to-prepare recipes that RVers can make in their own kitchens. As demand for trained technicians outgrew their ability to provide classes in rented facilities, they bought an RV park in Texas and broke ground for what is now the Big Red School House in Athens. Evada shares her experiences on the road, which fanned the flames of her passion for the RV lifestyle and to help people start mobile businesses of their own so they could enjoy the same travel experiences. She offers some advice on ways for people to scale down to enjoy the RV lifestyle now, while they are really young enough to enjoy it. Evada's story may have unfolded in an unusual way, but it was clearly divine inspiration that led her to make some life-changing decisions that would eventually help thousands of other people to follow her path. Her journey started out of necessity to find an affordable place to live while raising a teenage daughter. Then Evada met Terry Cooper, the RV professor, and they traveled the country together to train mobile technicians. While on the road, they met the current owners of Workamper News, Steve and Kathy Anderson. The four of them came up with the idea to launch the RV Inspectors Association to train people to operate independent mobile businesses of their own by helping others evaluate RVs before making purchases. Training technicians and inspectors proved to be a challenge to do one week here and another week there. That's when a door opened for them to buy a campground in Texas large enough to develop an adjacent training center. Today, thanks to Evada and her husband, Cooper, along with the Andersons, more people than ever are able to enjoy the same RV travel lifestyle, visit the same places and enjoy the same delicious regional foods the Coopers discovered. Rather than spending money on a big house with a lot of stuff, they intentionally downsized to enjoy a simpler life with less stress and greater joy. Evada Cooper faced several challenges in life, but rather than sulk about her situation, she stepped into the unknown guided by her faith and just followed doors as they opened in front of her. Even unfortunate experiences that she faced later proved to be springboards for helping people avoid those same situations and save money in the process. Today we are going to talk with the president of the National RV Training Academy about a new hybrid teaching method that will greatly benefit full-time RVers. Terry Cooper, who likes to be called “Cooper,” founded the National RV Training Academy in Athens, Texas, in 2018 as a permanent place to train RV technicians and inspectors. Prior to that, Cooper and his wife, Evada, traveled throughout the country in their RV full-time conducting training courses in key locations. Eventually, demand for training grew so large that they could no longer accommodate all the students in the rented facilities they had been using. So, they bought a beautiful campground and drew up plans to erect The Big Red School House next door. Since opening the training center, Cooper has continued to offer multiple classes every month to churn out RV inspectors and technicians. He also started producing some top-quality video training. Things were going well for him. Classes were full and more people than ever were inquiring about how to learn fix their own RVs or open a mobile repair business or even start inspecting RVs for other people. Then COVID-19 arrived, and the State of Texas ordered all schools closed and the county imposed restrictions on how many people could be in the same room together. That required Cooper and his staff to scramble in order to come up with a viable alternative. They came up with an idea for hybrid training which combines live two-way online classes with prerecorded videos and the workbooks used for their popular home-study course. It proved to be tremendously successful and attracted even more students than they had anticipated. So, Cooper expanded the hybrid model to include all the advanced training classes as well. That's what he is going to talk to us about today. He'll explain how the online hybrid classes work and describe a new way of getting tested in which people can complete all the hands-on exercises along with the testing for certification, if desired, in one Turbo Week of training. However, the academy also has a very popular RV Basic Maintenance Course designed with RVers in mind to show them how to fix 80 percent of the problems they are likely to encounter with their own RVs. That can save full-time RVers a lot of aggravation in trying to get an appointment for RV service while on the road. Learning to fix most problems by themselves is also a big time and money saver. For those people looking to support their RV travel lifestyle, the academy can also help them start a mobile RV repair or RV inspection business. This new hybrid training method will be a game changer in the ways RV owners or professional technicians and inspectors learn to diagnose and fix recreation vehicles. Using foundational workbooks and watching short videos at home, then interacting live with an instructor over the internet, people can learn to fix RVs from anywhere. If all they want is the knowledge, they have it at their fingertips for easy reference. However, if they see income opportunities by fixing RVs, then they can make one trip to Texas for a refresher course, hands-on workshops and certification testing to get their professional credentials. They can also participate in live training at the academy. If they want to become inspectors, they can do all the training online or at live classes in Texas. The six candidates in the three contested races for local office in Albemarle County appeared at the Senior Center on Wednesday at a campaign forum sponsored by the Senior Statesmen of Virginia. “We’re bringing the election down to the local level where it is significant and important for all of us to know what’s going on and to know the people who are in office locally,” said John McCauley, president of the Senior Statesmen of Virginia. This is the third time Board of Supervisors hopeful John Lowry, a Republican, and incumbent Democrat Liz Palmer have faced off at a campaign forum this election cycle. “I was chair of the airport board when the new airport was being built and was chair of the economic development authority for 12 years,” Lowry said. “I am running for office because I believe I can better represent the constituents’ interests in the Samuel Miller District.” Palmer was first elected in 2013, when she defeated incumbent Republican Duane Snow. “I’m having such a good time and feel we’ve done a good job and I want to continue,” Palmer said. “When I moved here I was struck by the condition of our water infrastructure, which is where our built environment meets the natural environment.” The county’s Comprehensive Plan designates 5 percent of Albemarle’s 726 square miles as the growth area. Candidates were asked if that should be expanded to spur economic development. Lowry said the county first needs to fully staff its economic development department following the resignation of its first ever director late last year. “We don’t have an economic development director,” Lowry said. “I think we should have an economic development real estate manager.” Palmer said there are plenty of economic development opportunities in the rural areas and so there is no need to expand the growth area. “What we’re trying to do is leave the rural areas for rural purposes,” Palmer said. “We have wineries and breweries. We have farms that are successful. We are looking now at a project that will process hops from different farms. We have cattle operations. We have all sorts of things in the rural areas.” Candidates also were asked if they would seek to change the revenue-sharing agreement wherein the county pays the city of Charlottesville a portion of its tax revenues to prevent annexation. The agreement was signed in 1982 and is still in effect despite a moratorium on annexation that remains in place. Palmer said she would ask the city to begin using the money to pay for infrastructure to address issues at the city-county borders. “There are a lot of congestion problems in the periphery,” she said. Lowry said the agreement is a contract that was very poorly written. “I wish it had been written in with a sunset agreement,” Lowry said. “The only way to break the contract would result in lawsuits.” Lowry said he would first pursue relief at the General Assembly. School board races After about 45 minutes, the event shifted over to the two contested School Board races. Katrina Callsen and Mary McIntyre met for the first time in a campaign forum in their race to succeed Pam Moynihan for the Rio District’s School Board seat. “Three important things to know about me is that I care about children, I care about my community and I care about education,” said Callsen, a graduate of Yale University who once served with Teach for America. “Education is one of the best chances we have to deal with systemic inequities,” she said. “Now is the time to put someone on the board who has a proven track record working with children.” McIntyre moved with her family to Albemarle County in 2016. “I’m a teacher and a mom and not a politician, so all of this is new to me,” she said. “I haven’t had a traditional education career but I’ve taught in four other school systems.” McIntyre said that in her travels she has found universal truths about public education. “Every child wants to learn but across the country we are struggling to meet the needs of all students,” she said. “We need to address social and economic justices in our community. Until we do that, we are going to continue to have an achievement gap.” Graham Paige, the incumbent School Board member for the Samuel Miller District, answered questions alongside challenger Julian Waters, a 2017 graduate of Western Albemarle High School. Paige pointed to two particular accomplishments since he was first elected to fill the seat vacated by Eric Strucko. “One is the accomplishment of the first phase of renovations at Red Hill Elementary School,” Paige said. “The second is the expansion of foreign language classes in our schools.” However, he said there is a need to continue making improvements, especially to close the achievement gap. Waters, who was born in 1999, said he has lived in the county his entire life. “If there’s one thing I have noticed in our schools it is that change is constant,” Waters said. “As we continue to move forward, it is critical for us to have a perspective on the School Board that has recent experience in the classroom.” Waters said he wants to expand pre-school education to prepare more students for learning and to make sure all students have transportation access to the county’s academies. Other questions probed the candidates’ positions on teacher salaries, multiage classrooms, redistricting and the appropriate level of homework. All candidates for school boards in Virginia run as independents. Supervisor Diantha McKeel, running as a Democrat, was in attendance at the forum but was not invited to participate because she is unopposed in her race for a second term to represent the Jack Jouett District. Democrat Ned Gallaway also was not invited to participate because he is unopposed in his race to succeed Brad Sheffield, a Democrat who did not seek re-election, in the Rio District. Kate Acuff, the Jack Jouett representative to the School Board, also is running unopposed. School Board candidates will meet again at a forum held by the League of Women Voters of the Charlottesville Area at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at the main branch of the Jefferson Madison Regional Library. Supervisor candidates will meet again at a league forum at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in Lane Auditorium at the Albemarle County Office Building.
