GrowCast: The Official Cannabis Podcast

Dr. Colin Bell - formerly of Mammoth Microbes and currently working with the incredible Miim Horticulture - returns to the show! Today we are doing a microbial deep dive in an attempt to understand what is essentially a massive iceberg of microbe knowledge. We only know a brief portion of how powerful and influential micro organisms are, but every year we are understanding more and more about how bacteria, fungi, and other tiny beings shape the world around us. Colin gives us a great breakdown of how microbes work from a basic perspective, how they interact and communicate with plants, and eventually dives deep enough to explain that just about everything to do with the human experience is powered by the microbiology within our own human microbiome. Even plants themselves, may have evolved from collections of ancient bacteria- thus it is crucial to understand and employ more of these tiny organisms in our own home gardens! Matt is the Chief Soil Scientist for Syngenta Group, where he leads their efforts to enable farmers around the world to improve their productivity and profitability through science-based innovation through soil health. Part of that team is my good friend and co-host of the Soil Sense podcast Dr. Abbey Wick, who you've heard on this show in the past. As well as Dr. Jordan Wade, who was a guest on a very fascinating episode of Soil Sense a year or so ago that I'll have to link to in the show notes because it's a great one. Anyway, so Matt's putting together this dream team of soil scientists and I had to bring him on the show to figure out what I can about what they're up to. Prior to joining Syngenta in 2022, he was a professor and department head of Soil and Crop Sciences at Colorado State University. His research focused on how the soil microbiome interacts with plants and the environment. He also co-founded a startup called Growcentia, which commercialized a phosphorus solubilizing microbial consortia developed in his academic lab and went on to develop other biostimulants. A cool connection there is one of Matt's co-founders at Growcentia was actually on this show five years ago. I didn't know Matt at the time so that's more of a coincidence than anything else, but that's episode 165 if you want to find that deep track. Anyway, i'll drop you into today's conversation when Matt is telling me what attracted him to this position, even though he already had a startup and a thriving career at Colorado State when he decide to make the leap two years ago to Syngenta.

Welcome back to our “Beasts” Double Bill! Last time, we watched "The Dummy" from the infamous anthology series by General Witchfinders hero Nigel Kneale. We now leave the smashed-up movie set of "The Dummy" with its snarling Y-fronts-wearing jilted actor and join Angie and Roger Truscott in their secluded Hampshire home for "During Barty's Party." This episode features the only actual 'beasts' as the main threat: in this case, large, super-evolved, intelligent rats. Elizabeth Sellars plays Angie Truscott, known for "The Mummy's Shroud," and Anthony Bate plays Roger Truscott, heavily channeling Michael Bryant's Peter Brock character from "The Stone Tape." Bate was cast as Doctor Fendehman in "Image of the Fendahl" but dropped out, with Denis Lill taking the role. Colin Bell plays Barty Wills, the local DJ hosting the titular "Barty's Party," his regular rock and roll radio show. Like the rest of the cast, Bell is only heard, not seen. He is seen, however, in "The Sea Devils" and "Invasion of the Dinosaurs," both Jon Pertwee stories. Norman Mitchell plays the Police Sergeant. Supposedly, at 18, Mitchell walked from Sheffield to London to become an actor, leading to nearly 200 film appearances, 500 radio broadcasts, and an estimated 2,000 television appearances. He developed a niche of playing policemen, appearing as such in 12 episodes of "Worzel Gummidge," "Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell" (more on this very soon), "And Now the Screaming Starts!", "Oliver!" and the first Doctor Who Christmas episode, "The Feast of Steven." John Rhys-Davies plays Peter Newell. Famous for his parts in Lord of the Rings and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Rhys-Daviesis a supporter of the British Conservative Party, Rhys-Davies was a radical leftist in the '60s, who tried to heckle a young Tory MP. But the parliamentarian "shot down the first two hecklers in such brilliant fashion that I decided I ought for once to shut up and listen". The MP was Margaret Thatcher. He is a supporter of Brexit. On 25 April 2019, he appeared as a panellist on the BBC's Question Time. His conduct on the programme towards politician Caroline Lucas was later described as "thuggish and sexist" by some viewers. Sprich: Den besten Spielern ihrer Zeit! On this week's show we chat about a wonderful charity called the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust. The Trust helps Irish families cover the cost of bringing a loved one's remains back home to Ireland. It was set up by the family of Kevin Bell, a 26-year-old County Down man who was tragically killed in a hit and run accident in the Bronx in 2013. Irish people at home and abroad have developed a deep affinity with the trust which has repatriated nearly 1,100 remains to date.I speak to Colin Bell, who is Kevin's father and a trustee of the charity. He discusses the history of the Trust, how it came about and how it has helped comfort so many grieving families. I also chat to Cassie Wilkins who is organizing a fundraiser for the Trust this Saturday, May 22nd in Sherwood's restaurant in Larchmont, Westchester County. The event, called The Ivory Party, is being organized by Cassie and her friends, Liz Prendergast, Jazz Neary and Anna McNeilis. This episode's guest got her big break in New Zealand when she stepped in to be the new stunt double for Lucy Lawless in the series Xena: Warrior Princess. With notoriety from the show, she got on a plane to the US to score her first major film role in the iconic Quintin Tarantino film KILL BILL, parts 1 and 2 as the stunt double for “THE BRIDE” played by Uma Thurman. Her credits following that film include other Tarantino films such as the stuntwoman centric movie Deathproof - where she played her own namesake and was her own stunt double, followed by an avalanche of other major films and television shows including Alias, Inglorious Basterds, The Proposal, Final Destination, Thor: Ragnarok, and making her full stunt coordinating debut WHILE also acting in the Tarantino film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood where she (ironically) played the part of the stunt coordinator's wife opposite Kurt Russell. She has expanded her extremely successful career as one of Hollywoods top stuntwomen to include actress, producer and now director.  She recently spearheaded and directed the viral quarantine video “Boss Bitch Fight Challenge” and has stunt coordinated AND acted in the upcoming film “Haymaker.” Not only is this person undoubtedly one of the most hard working, talented women I've ever met, she has a heart of gold, and stomach of steel. Her kindness and character know no bounds, and she continues to inspire and educate the next generation of women in this business with her candidness and desire to connect and collaborate.  She puts ketchup on her pizza, and beans on her toast.
