This episode critically examines In COVID's Wake by Princeton professors Steven M. and Francis Lee, focusing on their defense of the Great Barrington Declaration. Dr. Jonathan Howard and Wendy Orent argue that the authors downplay the catastrophic errors of the GBD architects, who pushed for herd immunity through mass infection while opposing vaccines, masks, and lockdowns.  The discussion highlights the disconnection between political science theorizing and real-world public health outcomes. Using Florida as a case study, they showcase the tragic failures of the GBD's approach, debunking the revisionist portrayal of its policies as reasonable or compassionate. The episode underscores the importance of accurately remembering the pandemic's scientific realities and human costs. If you want to make our Hannah angry, simply refer to God's Own Country, Francis Lee's 2017 film about love between an isolated young sheep farmer (Josh O'Connor) and a Romanian migrant worker (Alex Secareanu) set on a failing farm, as the Yorkshire Brokeback Mountain and watch her Bruce Banner it up. And right enough. It's fair to say that love for this film, for its cast (hello also Ian Hart and Gemma Jones) and for its closing song from Patrick Wolf is in the air for Yosra and Mick, too. Sundance 2023 runs from January 19-28, and we'll be covering this year's festival in a new podcast season about the films this year and how the programming fits into the festival's history. This is Seventh Row's second podcast season (the first was on Women at Cannes in 2022). In this episode, we discuss the films we're looking forward to at the 2023 Sundance Film Festivals based on directors we love, actors we love, and films we're hearing buzz about. We talk about the festival's importance in the film year, why we're pleased the festival has continued to offer a virtual option when other festivals are all returning to in-person only, and more. Chestnut Hill Does Not Exist...or does it??? Full Blog at lostmassachusetts.com We cover the lost history of a town that was never a town but was planned to be. It's not a ghost town, you can still go there: Chestnut Hill. People may imagine it is a distinct town but it is made of pieces of several other cities. How? Listen to the podcast. The Lee family acquired over 160 acres of what many people considered to be remote, rural, dusty, swampy land on the Newton-Brookline border. Part of that land would be transferred to Roxbury. The Lee's would develop the land, bringing families in, clearing it, building roads and houses and then renaming the area "Chestnut Hill". Their goal was to create a new community but Boston's ambitions made that just a dream as the suburbs tightened their borders in response. "Named by Francis Lee, who built the first country house in the area in the 1850's, Chestnut Hill is in three different towns"(brooklinehistoricalsociety.org) "That still doesn't explain the Brookline-shaped gap in Boston's present-day silhouette, though. Between 1868 and 1870, Boston tripled its size by annexing first Roxbury and then Dorchester, promising new infrastructure and development. In 1873, it grew larger still, absorbing Brighton, Charlestown, and West Roxbury. Brookline, however, would later vote against joining Boston, putting a stop to the city's inland expansion until it annexed Hyde Park in 1912." (realestate.boston.com) "The western part of the City of Roxbury split off to form the Town of West Roxbury in 1851. It survived on its own until 1874, when it was annexed to Boston along with Brighton and Charlestown." To wrap up Pride month and the theme of lesbian arthouse films, we end with the highest profile of the four, AMMONITE (2020).  Starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan, the film is based on two extremely important and real women in the field of paleontology.  The movie however is a complete fictional account where the screenwriter supposes a “what-if” about the two, and had they been lesbian and what that relationship would be like. In the 1840's, Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) is a self-taught paleontologist, running her family's store on the English coast selling fossils she finds and categorizes.  Geologist Roderick Murchison (James McArdle) and his wife Charlotte (Saoirse Ronan) arrive, where the husband leaves Charlotte in attendance with Mary so to have her learn more about fossils and sciences.  Soon the two's class differences are overlooked and they begin a torrid affair. The film is directed and written from a completely fictional story by English director Francis Lee.  Both actresses were praised for their performances with Kate Winslet especially getting high regard.  With its completely fictional story, slow pacing, and little focus on the women's fossil work, the film received lukewarm reviews by critics.  Your co-hosts take a look at this period piece and give their thoughts.

For her role as fossil hunter Mary Anning in the film “Ammonite”, actor Kate Winslet listened to recordings by a Lyme Regis local. But what is a Dorset accent and how did it develop? As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, how are such accents changing? Multicultural British English or MBE has emerged from the multi-cultural, multi-ethnic communities in cities like London and Manchester. Adopted by those who live in urban and rural areas - like Dorset - speakers use MBE and mix it with their local variety to create a new linguistic identity. In this episode Ollie explores how accents are a constantly evolving part of our culture. He also attempts to master a Dorset accent. Will he succeed? Probably not.
