In this week's episode, Scott talks through his love of the 2018 Ready Player One, his recent discovery The Adventures of Tom Stranger, and the 2020 game Will of the Wisps, lambasting poor voice actors as he goes. Meanwhile, Rob explains why DC's Kingdom Come is essential reading, why In Flames' 2019 "I, The Mask" isn't all essential listening, and reminds us of the semi-forgotten gem that is Alan Davies' As Yet Untitled - all this whilst Scott tries to distract him with pond creatures...
At the beginning of the year, I set a goal for the books I wanted to read. I stuck to my list as best I could, however, like the outlines for my own books, the path was not followed. Warning: NSFW! Our heroes continue to get really upset about The Adventures of Tom Stranger, Interdimensional Insurance Agent, and it's "sequel." The brothers get really confused about how Adam Baldwin chooses to say both "ambiance," and "poor people." Rance still wants to challenge our author to a fight, and Bob is looking for a light in the dark, but just gets fed up with the world. Both hosts throw all caution to the wind and say the F word a LOT. We discover that our cool cool cool author believes people who have occupied a street are sissy, liberal, crybabies, that pooping in a bucket is the type of skill that won't get you anywhere in life, and gender studies degrees are just a big joke. Like, SNL level satire joke. We finish the episode off with a really disturbing game, in which Rance shows off just how unstable these guys really sound. Thank goodness the guys gave up their man buns, or Larry may have labeled them as hipster cucks. Warning: NSFW! Our heroes finally dive into a series-long joke full throttle. The Adventures of Tom Stranger, Interdimensional Insurance Agent is a book written by a Libertarian, narrated by a Libertarian, for Libertarians. Or babies. Idiot babies. Idiot Libertarian babies. If you like to hear people get pissed about bad writing and paper-thin “jokes,” then this is the podcast for you! Listen along as the guys fall into an episode long bout of confusion, anger, and sadness. We have before us a study in contrasts. Bob tries to give up the podcast after realizing that it will only ever bring him pain and sadness, and Rance hits a series high, repeatedly challenging the book’s author to a fight. At some point they kind of talk about the book, but in the end spend so much time crying, complaining, and trying to set up MMA fights, that they decide they need a second episode just to get all out all of their disgust. ***The following episode deals with issues of sexual violence.*** Over twenty years ago, Thordis Elva of Iceland shared a teenage romance with Tom Stranger, an exchange student visiting from Australia. After a school dance in 1996, when she was 16 and he was 18, he raped her. After parting ways and independently examining their own feelings and responses to the traumatic event, Thordis got in touch with Tom. The two would go on to correspond for years and later meet in South Africa to navigate the pain surrounding Tom’s actions together. In October 2016, they recorded a controversial joint TED Talk exploring this journey. This week, we’re joined by Nari Malkhasyan to discuss the talk and its implications regarding shame, trauma and humanity. As we felt the original talk pursued, we hope we also touch on the uncomfortable nuance and difficult questions in our conversation. Lastly, like any episode, this conversation is about reflection and inquiry, not conclusion and declaration. What we discuss may clash with your perspectives and similarly, what Thordis and Tom explored (and acknowledged) is not a prescription for all survivors and perpetrators.
No matter what form it takes, abuse leaves us indelibly altered, often consumed by an emotional confusion that feels impossible to untangle. In this episode, we hear from three people with firsthand experience of abuse, each speaking from a profoundly different perspective. Rachel Jeffs recounts escaping the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints after years of suffering sexual abuse by her cult leader and father Warren Jeffs, while documentarian Attiya Khan recollects the domestic abuse she endured as a teenager—and the experience of confronting her abuser two decades after breaking free. And in a particularly fraught account, Tom Stranger narrates the night in high school when he raped his then-girlfriend, who later tracked him down as part of her recovery. In sharing their stories with candid detail, these guests ultimately instill us with a more nuanced understanding of abuse, its impact, and the immense possibility for healing. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Toady in this turbo episode we take a look at the amazon original The Adventures of Tom Stranger, Interdimensional Insurance Agent, by Larry Correia.
Original broadcast date: May 12, 2017. When loss, violence, or betrayal test our willingness to forgive — how do we do it anyway? This hour, TED speakers explore the challenges and benefits of forgiving others — and ourselves. Guests include mental health advocate Sue Klebold, co-authors Thordis Elva and Tom Stranger, and writer Elizabeth Lesser.
In this short version of the show, Tom and Mike discuss a fateful night many years ago, that changed the lives of two young people for good - 18-year-old Tom and his then-girlfriend Thordis. We discuss facing up to the mistakes you've made and owning your shit, no matter how bad it is and how immensely hard it is, as Tom shares. We hear Tom talk about how that incident shaped his life and profession, lighting an urge to educate and support young men in understanding sexual assault, consent and how we interact with women. This is just a taste of the depth of this conversation. Be sure to check out the full episode

Award-winning writer, journalist and public speaker, Thordis Elva was voted Woman of the Year in her native Iceland for her tireless campaigning for gender equality. She believes in ending the silence that still shrouds sexual violence, of which she is a survivor, and sees dialogue as a means of healing. She has long researched the effect of forgiveness in human relationships, an interest which took her across the globe and into the depths of her own heart, resulting in the book South of Forgiveness which she wrote with Tom Stranger.
Thordis Elva is disrupting patriarchy. In her forthcoming book, South of Forgiveness, she and her coauthor are challenging the world to rethink our approaches and assumptions on how we address sexual violence and gender stereotypes. I first learnt about her work when I saw her give a TEDTalk at TEDWomen 2015. In the talk, she, the survivor of rape, gave a talk with the perpetrator of rape, Tom Stranger. They stood side-by-side and delivered one of the most thought-provoking talks of the day. The conversations in halls after their talk were diverse. Questions like did Tom need to be punished for his violent act? Had already been punished? Should we address rape through punitive approaches? In this Disruptive Conversation, she argues that violent acts, like rape, are not committed by monsters but by people. In this complex conversation, we explore a number of topics related to sexual violence and gender equality. Thordis is trying to disrupt the way we think about problems in society.
