At his east London base Total Refreshment Centre, Alabaster DePlume discusses his philosopy on what it means to be his own artist, the power of individual and group belief - and what he learned working with people with learning differences. His wonderful new album, A Blade Because A Blade Is Whole is available now on International Anthem.
Jeff Mills, Neue Grafik, Prabhu Edouard and Knoel Scott talk about improvisational performance, rhythms as a form of communication and how technology is overtaking the artist. Jeff Mills started out on the Detroit techno scene in the 1980s before founding Underground Resistance with ‘Mad' Mike Banks in 1989. He left Detroit for New York in 1991 (via a residency at Berlin's mighty Tresor), to pursue a solo career and set up his own label, Axis. Since then, he's released a number of projects, including two volumes of Waveform Transmissions for Tresor; 2005's Blue Potential, a live album recorded with the 70-piece Montpelier Philharmonic Orchestra; and a new soundtrack for Fritz Lang's 1926 film Metropolis in 2000. In 2018, he set up the Afrofunk-electro-jazz ensemble Tomorrow Comes The Harvest with the late Nigerian drummer Tony Allen, and has been making music and performing with the collective ever since. Neue Grafik is a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist making a truly unique sound. Blending hip-hop, jazz and house, his music draws a map between his African heritage, time in Paris and love of London's grime scene. Forming the Neue Grafik Ensemble at an after-hours jam session at London's Total Refreshment Centre, he's established himself as formidable force in the world of jazz. Indo-French percussionist and composer Prabhu Edouard is recognised as one of the most versatile tabla players of his generation. A student of the legendary Pandit Shankar Ghosh, he's collaborated with artists from around the world including Jean-Pierre Drouet and Laxmi Shankar, and is part of the afrofunk-electro-jazz ensemble Tomorrow Comes The Harvest. Knoel Scott is an American saxophonist and composer best known for his time with jazz collective Sun Ra Arkestra. With a career spanning more than 40 years, he's worked alongside jazz greats including Lou Donaldson and Leon Thomas. Most recently, he's released his first major studio album, Celestial with long time collaborator Marshall Allen.
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a very mellow, very lovely conversation between a woman known for her gorgeous voice and heartfelt songwriting and a man known for, as he calls it, “wobbly saxophone,” Beth Orton and Alabaster dePlume. Beth Orton has been making beautiful, often heartbreaking songs since the early 1990s, when she was a leading light in what I think is a now-forgotten genre called “folktronica.” She first found notice by contributing vocals to a few Chemical Brothers songs, then broke out with her timeless debut album Trailer Park in 1996. She has since created a lovely and varied body of work that's explored a variety of sounds but that's tied together by her unforgettable voice. Orton's latest album is from last year: It's called Weather Alive, which to me sounds like a spiritual heir to Van Morrison's classic Astral Weeks, which may in part be because it features the saxophone playing of today's other guest, Alabaster dePlume. Check out a little bit of “Fractals” right here, and definitely go see Orton on tour this fall; she'll be back in the States this September. Bethortonofficial.com has all the dates. Alabaster dePlume picked up the saxophone in 2007, but sort of reinvented himself—including taking on that stage name—in 2015. He became a fixture in London's improvisational jazz scene not long after, and a lot of what he does is centered around the recording studio/gathering place where this conversation was recorded, Total Refreshment Centre. DePlume broke out in 2020 with an album called To Cy & Lee, which was inspired by and named after some folks he helped as a mental-health support worker. In a couple of weeks, he'll release a new album called Come With Fierce Grace, whose initial sessions were done during the pandemic with Tom Skinner, a drummer who's currently also a member of the Radiohead offshoot The Smile. Check out “Greek Honey Slick” from the new album, and check out alabaster-deplume.com for his schedule, which includes a month of U.S. shows in September. As I mentioned at the top of this intro, this chat is both lovely and very mellow. DePlume is a soothing presence whose spirit seems powered almost exclusively by love, and Orton is happy to participate. They chat about the climate-activism event that landed dePlume in jail and found Orton chased off the stage; they talk about angry yoga and the joys of triangle chokes, and Orton points out how technological advances can help women artists. Find your zen and enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Beth Orton and Alabaster dePlume for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the goodness on this very site. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time.

Alejandro Ayala is a curator, organizer, educator, and dedicated Chicagoan. Known to many by his DJ name ‘King Hippo,' Ayala hosted a monthly show on the globally-distributed QC Radio program on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide FM. For two decades he's been an active event producer and promoter, responsible for the long-standing Fresh Roasted series at The Whistler, the annual Preservation of Fire series, the legendary CHICAGOxLONDON showcase at London's Total Refreshment Centre, the DALLASxCHICAGO interstate artist exchange at Sleeping Village in 2018, the Chicago debut of Grammy-winning Australian prog-soul band Hiatus Kaiyote at The Double Door in 2014, and innumerable one-off events for myriad artists across Chicago's diverse landscape of venues (including Elastic Arts, Co-Prosperity, Transition East, Empty Bottle, and many more). Between 2020 and 2022 he worked as an instructor for After School Matters, for whom he designed a unique 'Event Planning & Production' curriculum. Currently, Ayala works as Head of Marketing for the International Anthem record label, where he's been a creative engineer behind album campaigns for Damon Locks' Black Monument Ensemble, Jaimie Branch, and Junius Paul, in addition to acting as photographer-in-residence (his photographs of Angel Bat Dawid have been published by The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Rolling Stone), and co-producing three albums by Makaya McCraven. In 2021 the Chicago Reader profiled Ayala as a Chicagoan of Note.
This is an excerpt of a full length episode currently only available to patrons. To become a patron and support what we're doing from £3 per month, head to www.patreon.com/LoveMessagePod. In this patrons-only bonus episode, Jeremy and Tim have a conversation about what music they're listening to at the moment. We had planned to listen to 6 or 7 tracks, but the conversation was flowing and so we only managed 2. Tim and Jeremy discuss the British jazz revival, taking in labels like Gilles Peterson's Brownswood and venues like the Total Refreshment Centre; their own recent experience of throwing parties in East London; developing a more global musical palette than that offered by David Mancuso; and the changing patterns of migration that feed into interesting syntheses of international musics. This is the first of a rough series of more conversational, unplanned episodes reflecting on what's been on our record players recently and what we've been up to that we'll be releasing to patrons to say thank you for your support. Hold tight for news about a live seminar series with Tim and Jeremy - more info when we have it. The two tracks discussed are: Lokkhi Terra mmets Dele Sosimi - Afro Sambroso KOKOROKO - Abusey Junction If you like the clips we played, we'd encourage you to support the artists and buy the tracks, both of which are available on bandcamp. Produced and edited by Matt Huxley.
In this episode we talk to CAPITOL K! Capitol K has released seven albums with a legacy of influential releases on early 2000s electronica labels including Planet Mu and XL. Bandcamp: https://capitolk.bandcamp.com Website: www.capitolk.com Telegram Channel: https://t.me/capitolk Kristian Craig Robinson, aka Capitol K, is a multi-instrumentalist and record producer with a long history in London’s most interesting under-the-radar music places and spaces. For the last seven years K has been behind the consoles at the heavily influential Total Refreshment Centre, recording and mixing records with the likes of Trash Kit, The Comet Is Coming, Rozi Plain, Alabaster DePlume, Dry Cleaning, Flamingods, Cykada, Ibibio Sound Machine, BAS JAN and John Johanna. It’s not just recording. He’s also become an influential if understated mentor to a new wave of producers and bands. His experience in studio environments is long and storied, including stints at Studio Plateaux on an island in the middle of the Thames and in the Royal Symphonia’s squatted rehearsal rooms. Aside this he also runs the record label Faith & Industry. It’s a friends and family, love not money affair and he has released music by Champagne Dub, John Johanna, Super Best Friends Club, Blue House & Clémentine March.
Kristian Craig Robinson has been a familiar face amidst the London musical community for many years having released a sprawling back catalogue of music on the likes of XL Recordings, Planet Mu and Faith & Industry. He has long been acclaimed for his contribution to experimental electronic music and has remained a key figure amidst the local community working in various studios and under the guise of various projects. Until recently he was involved in the running of the studio operating out of the Total Refreshment Centre. Last month marked the release of a new album which he unveiled on his own label, the release was titled "Goatherder" and was a tripped out journey between abstract soundscapes and ethereal experimentalism. We invited him to record a Monday mix for us.
