#333: Black Metal band of Robots and 1 Person, Electromancy!

The Dark Side Of Music With Derek Hanjora

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 5, 2022 65:34

Technical black metal composed by humans, played by physical robots. In 2018 Satyra was diagnosed with Lyme disease and quickly became too disabled to play instruments anymore. Instead of giving up, they spent the next two years slowly building robots to play instruments for them. The result is Electromancy, the robot metal band. Guitars and drums are played by Satyra's own DIY robotic designs; their bandmates are manikins, cut up into LED fueled light shows. In April 2020, Electromancy released their debut EP Robot Black Metal. Tracks premiered on Next Mosh and Sleeping Village, and gained excitement in numerous places including Metal Hammer, where they noted Electromancy as a band with “Epic Potential” describing the EP as “…a fascinating concept with compositional chops to deliver.“ Electromancy's music is technical black metal, mixing black metal with bits of death metal, experimentalism, and technical composition. The robots aren't a gimmick, they are core to the sound, allowing textures, patterns, and compositions that are not natural to and sometimes not possible for a human musician. Some of these compositional eccentricities include phasing multiple rhythmic melodies on a single instrument and simply extremely fast and chaotic composition. In addition to the robots, Satyra fills the bass frequencies with a drone horn made from a modified PVC pipe (the resulting instrument is similar to but not quite the same as a didgeridoo). This full, enveloping bass sound creates a grounded floor for the otherwise chaotic music. More than half of this album was painstakingly composed by foot during periods where Satyra's illness made their hands unusable. Electromancy's lyrical themes largely revolve around Satyra's struggle with a physical disability, the uncertainty of their lifespan with chronic illness, and the spiritual experiences brought on from facing human fragility & mortality so directly (often with surprisingly uplifting conclusions). These musical themes paired with the robotic instrumentation and the story of why this all came to be create a profoundly raw and unique experience. Electromancy is currently signed with Metal Assault Records and will be releasing their debut album Technopagan on January 14th, 2022. https://linktr.ee/robotmetalband The Dark Side Of Music | Facebook The Dark Of Music (@thedarksideof_music) • Instagram photos and videos Black Rose Media (theblackrosemedia.com) --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thedarksideofmusic/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thedarksideofmusic/support

Back before corporations acquired (and systematically destroyed) rock radio by playing the same 10 songs on perpetual repeat into the dirt, radio disc jockeys used to actually have some control over their “playlists” and would sometimes throw on a song that wasn’t a normal rock radio favorite:  maybe something that wasn’t a “hit single”, or something for which there was no “music video”; something longer, something unusual, something off the beaten path:  we call these Deep Cuts.  That’s what us Metal Nerds call “The Good Stuff”.  And when it comes to Black Sabbath, it’s ALL Good Stuff!!! There’s just one problem:  because WE THE NERDS here at Metal Nerdery are already so intimately familiar with what shall be henceforth known as “The First Six”, it was kind of a challenge for us to each pick our favorite 6 deep cuts from The First Six Black Sabbath albums.  There were a few that overlapped on our respective listicles but we tried to go as deeply as we could to give those of you who are only familiar with side 1 of ‘Paranoid’ a nice sampling of what we call “That GOOD Sabbath”.  JOIN US after you’ve finished your bowl (of breakfast cereal) as we discuss our favorite “deep cuts” from our favorite first 6 albums by our favorite First Godfathers of Metal, Black Sabbath.  Also check out our live stream of this episode on our Facebook page and find out whether or not Russ will show his “Man Tetons” on Facebook. Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episodeConsider supporting us at Patreon - patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast You'll find some extra goodies there too!Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merchand kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast appListen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Play or wherever you get your Podcasts.Follow us on the Socials:Facebook - Instagram - TwitterEmail: metalnerdery@gmail.com  Show Notes00.00:  Goin’ down…#crunchyballriffs/***BTW check out our Facebook LIVE version of this episode***/The deep Black Sabbath Cuts from the 1st 6 Albums (from the Metal Nerdery perspective)/#thefirstsix/The “definition” of Deep Cuts 04.30:  Sleeping Village (with the WHOLE finger, not just A Bit of Finger)/Behind the Wall of Sleep/Electric Funeral/Rat Salad/The Wizard/Supernaut/Solitude (#relaxer)/Supernaut AND Cornucopia (A little high, a little low)/The Thrill of It All (Is Sabotage “underrated”?  ***EMAIL US at metalnerdery@gmail.com and give us your perspective***)/Supertzar (Evil Disney)/Megalomania (STING ME!)/National Acrobat/Spiral Architect (Remember the intro from Spiral Architect being on the commercial for C.A.R.E. back in the 80’s?)/Lord of This World/Hand of Doom/#gold/Sorry I looked at you… 15.15:  check out our Man Tetons on Facebook/Hole in the Sky (#mattsaid)/Billy’s List:  Sleeping Village, Behind the Wall of Sleep, Into the Void, Supernaut/Cornucopia (tie), Thrill of it All, Megalomania/Russell’s List:  Hole in the Sky, Snowblind (that’s not a #deepcut), The Writ, Symptom of The Universe (***Have a drink on behalf of Russell’s birthday***), Changes, Killing Yourself to Live, Supernaut, Behind the Wall of Sleep/Wheeler’s List:  Sleeping Village (where’s the finger?), Electric Funeral (#suicidepaneling & #shagcarpeting), Solitude/After Forever (tie), St. Vitus’ Dance, St. Wheels of Confusion, Spiral Architect (EMAIL US re:  C.A.R.E. commercial soundtrack at metalnerdery@gmail.com), Supertzar, The Writ 27.00:  The influence of other bands on Sabbath’s sound (specifically regarding the change in their sound with Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage; particularly Sabotage) and the departure from the mostly bluesy sound/***FACEBOOK SHOUT OUTS***/Ridiculous memories and “high” fashion. 30.16:  NOW is where you sync up with Facebook:  A Bit of Finger/Sleeping Village (***listen with headphones***)/Russell’s birthday pledge and the transition to The Warning/Electric Funeral (#takeitoff #cantbeloudenough):  It’s fair to say that Electric Funeral was a bit… #thrashish 38.11:  Master of Reality (NOT Puppets):  Wrong Master (and also NOT a deep cut…#foreshadowing)/After Forever and/or Solitude (because After Forever #rocksballs)/Thank you Russ for putting that thought in our brains LOL!/ After Forever = Happy Thrash/Our pledge…and a request (or a challenge) and a SHOUT OUT (and a tangentionally related bit regarding Storm Corrosion related to #bolth Opeth and Porcupine Tree, and ultimately:  Black Sabbath)/WTF is in YOUR breakfast cereal!? It’s another helping of Go Fact Yourself in Chicago, now more delicious and savory than ever! Peter Sagal is the host of the NPR program "Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me!" But his experience with trivia shows goes all the way back to when he was a contestant on "Jeopardy"… and quickly found himself in the negative dollars. That doesn’t mean he’s bad at trivia; he’s just bad at pressing buttons. He’ll tell us about that and why he’s so dedicated to disrupting the narrative of Chicago deep-dish pizza. Opposite Peter is author Rebecca Makkai. Her book The Great Believers earned her the distinction of being a finalist for the Pulitzer prize. It’s a truly special accomplishment -- but she had an even bigger dream as a child: teaching dogs how to talk. The guests will discuss the local food scene, whether or not a hot dog is a sandwich and, yes, a lot of discussion about the windy city. What’s the Difference: The Windy City What’s the difference between a hurricane and a typhoon? What’s the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning? Areas of Expertise Peter Sagal: Chicago food culture, James Cameron movies and running Rebecca Makkai: The film Clue, the state of Vermont and the furnace girl murder of Lake Bluff, Illinois Appearing in this episode: J. Keith van Straaten Helen Hong Peter Sagal Rebecca Makkai With guest experts: Gov. Madeleine May Kunin, author, ambassador and three-term governor of Vermont. Aseethe’s Throes is a work of corrosive beauty and colossal weight. The trio of guitarist/vocalist Brian Barr, drummer Eric Diercks, and bassist/vocalist Noah Koester craft tectonic slabs of doom through minimalist approaches to composition. Minutely selected textures built on simplistic, repetitive motifs become mountainous. With each cycle of repetition, their towering riffs, bludgeoning drums, and inhuman howls become increasingly hypnotic and reveal subtle intricacies. The recursive nature of their songs coupled with their glacial pacing make masterful use of restraint to create moments of genuine surprise. On Throes, these elements coalesce into songs as detailed as they are visceral and scathing. Where their previous album Hopes of Failure centered around hopelessness, Throes turns its focus toward wrath. Barr, who composed and arranged the bulk of the music, sees the album as a direct continuation and a response to the damage and exhaustion caused by the shifts in the political and environmental landscape. Koester penned much of the album’s biting, politically-charged lyrics, aiming vicious barks at fascists and profiteers alike. Despite being Aseethe’s newest member, Koester’s contributions came naturally, having grown up in the same Iowan DIY community the band has been integral to for over a decade. Aseethe embraces that sense of community and resistance which Koester bolsters by lyrically capturing the unease of living in “fly over” territory and its wintery desolation. Throes was recorded at Steve Albini’s Chicago studio Electrical Audio by Shane Hochstetler (Jon Mueller, Northless). Aseethe drew from their expertise in utilizing noise and drones to develop a sonic world uniquely their own, dually aesthetic and foreboding. Distant cymbal swells and feedback loops on “To Victory” mirror the endlessly open landscape of their home. The instrumental “Suffocating Burden” makes use of processed feedback and panning drones made from both heavily effected guitar and amplified gong suspended between speakers. Barr drew inspiration from his recent solo work live-scoring films, relying on instinct as a compositional tool to interplay with the rigid structures throughout. Aseethe remains one of the most distinctive and relentless forces in heavy music operating today. Through their ability to constantly evolve and incorporate new sounds and disparate influences into their music, they stand at the vanguard of forward thinking bands like labelmates The Body and SUMAC. Throes is Aseethe at their most daring and focused, building monuments of anguish while thrusting into the void.
