Rolando grew up in south west Detroit, a primarily Hispanic district of the city, he was heavily influenced by his Latin cultural rhythms and percussion. Inspired from an early age by his musician father, he pursued his own interest in music and became well known and respected within the Latino community. It was later when he heard Jeff Mills in 1985 as "The Wizard" that he discovered the innovative sounds of Techno. Through a mutual friend he was introduced to Mike Banks and joined the enigmatic Underground Resistance in 1994. In 1999 'Jaguar' although not Rolando's first release on UR turned perceptions of Techno on their head, breaking into other genres of dance music and becoming an all time classic in the boxes of DJs such as Tenaglia, Carl Cox, Oakenfold, and Gilles Peterson. The track has a long legacy of reworking and lives on to this day many years later inspiring audiences from all genres. In November 2004, Rolando left both Underground Resistance and his Los Hermanos project behind.2014 saw Rolando launch his own label R3 ( Roland Rocha Records) and has more or less exclusively released his own music on his label since. Rolando now a Dj for more than thirty –five years continues to work internationally as a Dj , producer and Remixer with an eclectic clientele such as Marcel Dettman, Kraftwerk, D'Julz, Ben Sims, Skudge, A Sagittariun. Our landmark 700th episode in partnership with Detroit's Blueprint presents the first in a new three-part series exploring the untold history of Detroit techno from the perspective of the women who built it. The history of Detroit techno is often recounted in waves. First there was the Belleville Three—Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May—closely followed by a second cohort of artists who further developed the sound in the '90s. Names like Carl Craig, Octave One, Robert Hood, Jeff Mills and Mike Banks are among those that have been codified in the official annals of techno history. But there's another, lesser known story that is seldom told about the women who grew the scene right alongside them. Equally esteemed artists like DJ Minx (the founder of Women On Wax Recordings), K-Hand, DJ Cent, Stacey Hotwaxx Hale and more ran labels, collectives and DJ nights that aren't bestowed with the same credit as those from their male counterparts, and have consequently been lost in the chronicles of time. For the 700th episode of the RA Exchange, we counter correct this gender inequity with the first episode of a three-part series hosted and produced by the all-female Detroit collective and party series Blueprint. Alanna Greenlee, Janisa Nelson and Crystal Mioner embark on interviews that illuminate an alternative history of Detroit techno that unfurled alongside these better-documented techno waves, tracing the birth of a woman-led community that put mutual support at its heart and fought to earn respect from their male peers and the scene at large. Jeff Mills, Neue Grafik, Prabhu Edouard and Knoel Scott talk about improvisational performance, rhythms as a form of communication and how technology is overtaking the artist. Jeff Mills started out on the Detroit techno scene in the 1980s before founding Underground Resistance with ‘Mad' Mike Banks in 1989. He left Detroit for New York in 1991 (via a residency at Berlin's mighty Tresor), to pursue a solo career and set up his own label, Axis. Since then, he's released a number of projects, including two volumes of Waveform Transmissions for Tresor; 2005's Blue Potential, a live album recorded with the 70-piece Montpelier Philharmonic Orchestra; and a new soundtrack for Fritz Lang's 1926 film Metropolis in 2000. In 2018, he set up the Afrofunk-electro-jazz ensemble Tomorrow Comes The Harvest with the late Nigerian drummer Tony Allen, and has been making music and performing with the collective ever since. Neue Grafik is a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist making a truly unique sound. Blending hip-hop, jazz and house, his music draws a map between his African heritage, time in Paris and love of London's grime scene. Forming the Neue Grafik Ensemble at an after-hours jam session at London's Total Refreshment Centre, he's established himself as formidable force in the world of jazz. Indo-French percussionist and composer Prabhu Edouard is recognised as one of the most versatile tabla players of his generation. A student of the legendary Pandit Shankar Ghosh, he's collaborated with artists from around the world including Jean-Pierre Drouet and Laxmi Shankar, and is part of the afrofunk-electro-jazz ensemble Tomorrow Comes The Harvest. Knoel Scott is an American saxophonist and composer best known for his time with jazz collective Sun Ra Arkestra. With a career spanning more than 40 years, he's worked alongside jazz greats including Lou Donaldson and Leon Thomas. Most recently, he's released his first major studio album, Celestial with long time collaborator Marshall Allen.

Today we premiere some jazz soaked house from Jon Dixon, with vocals from Detroits own Kenny Watson. Glistening soulful house music never goes out of fashion, and Jon Dixon latest EP on 4EVR 4WRD captures jazz submerged house at its purest. Jon Dixon's latest EP, Vocal Sessions Vol.1 is comprised of two original deep house jams featuring Detroit vocalists L'Renee and Kenny Watson, as well as a remix by Jimpster and an edit by Jon under his MinorInvention alias. Released on vinyl as well as digital on September 9th, the digital version will include the Brixton Remix as a bonus track. Jon Dixon is one of the city's most sought-after musicians for every genre ranging from jazz to techno. He believes that the more versatile and open minded you are at your craft, the further it will take you. In 2015 he started an independent label, 4EVR 4WRD (Forever Forward) to focus on making electronic music fused with elements of jazz, hip hop and other styles of music. Jon has had the opportunity to not only lead the Underground Resistance live acts Galaxy 2 Galaxy and Timeline, but has also performed with Interstellar Fugitives, Amp Fiddler, Jeff Mills, Mike Banks, Francesco Tristano, Carl Craig, Goldie and more. “I feel that it is important for me as a musician to not only continue the rich culture and history of both jazz and electronic music but to also use my knowledge, theory and experience to combine the two and take both genres to the next level!” Dixon's and Kenny Watson's collaboration is coruscating deep house in its slickest and purest form. Deep and winding bass lays the foundation for sparkling jazz influenced strings and diminished grooves. Watson's vocals are deep, eloquent and profoundly Detroit. This is irresistible house music, for purist's, novices and those who simply appreciate good music. Burning Ambulance Podcast

This is the Burning Ambulance podcast's sixth year, and our seventieth episode, so I decided it was time to change things up a little. This season, we're going to have a single subject we're going to be exploring through all ten episodes that I'm going to be presenting, and that theme is fusion.Fusion is a very charged term. When most people hear it, in reference to music, anyway, they probably think of bands from the 1970s like the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, and Weather Report: groups formed by ex-members of Miles Davis's band that combined a certain freedom to improvise with extremely complex compositions that were closer to progressive rock than to jazz. I mean, when you listen to the first two Mahavishnu Orchestra albums, The Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire, side by side with King Crimson's Larks' Tongues in Aspic and Starless and Bible Black, they really fit together quite well. I mean, they're even using the same instrumental palette: guitar, violin, keyboards, bass, drums. The only real difference is that King Crimson had a singer. What interests me about fusion, the term and the concept, is that it lives up to something saxophonist Wayne Shorter, one of the co-founders of Weather Report, has said many times — that to him, the word jazz means “I dare you”. I dare you to play as loud as the rock bands. I dare you to embrace funk and multi-part suites and the most advanced studio production techniques available. I dare you to go big, to be ambitious. Because that's what the best fusion of the 1970s was, and what modern-day fusion is. It's ambitious. It doesn't recognize externally imposed limitations, people saying “you can't do that”. Why not? Why can't you? It refuses to stay within the boundaries of genre. It's not jazz, it's not rock, because there's no such thing as jazz and no such thing as rock. One of the things I discovered, or became more certain of, while writing my book Ugly Beauty: Jazz in the 21st Century, which is out this month from Zero Books in the UK, is that jazz is ultimately about artistic intention. There's no one instrument or rhythm or harmonic relationship that defines it, but there are two crucial values: innovation and improvisation. There must be an attempt to do something new, or to put a new spin on something old, and there must be an element of uncertainty and a real-time exchange of ideas, or in the case of solo performances, there must be an element of real-time thinking and spontaneous creation. Because it's absolutely possible to play something that startles or surprises yourself, and then respond to it.So fusion is about taking ideas from seemingly disparate genres and combining them. And taking the philosophies that govern those seemingly disparate genres and figuring out what they have in common. That's what the Seventies artists did, and that's what modern-day fusion acts are doing. I would include people like Thundercat, Cameron Graves, Christian Scott and even Kassa Overall, who's been on this podcast before, in that category. And that's what we're going to be talking about all year long on this podcast, through interviews with prominent fusion artists of the past and present. Many people may not think of Jeff Mills as a fusion artist. He's normally thought of as one of the most important musicians in techno history. I'm not gonna run down his discography here, that's what Wikipedia's for, but suffice it to say that his influence in the 1990s was massive, but what makes him interesting to me is that he's taken the creative space his fame has brought him and used it to really expand his own sonic parameters. He's made an album with a full orchestra. He's created new scores for silent films. He's made albums inspired by astronomy, science fiction, and his interest in the supernatural. And he's collaborated with musicians who are geniuses in their own fields. In 2018, he made an album called Tomorrow Comes the Harvest with legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen. And that project led to the first of the three albums he put out in 2021. It's called Counter Active, and it's a collaboration with keyboardist Jean-Philippe Dary under the name The Paradox. The second album he released this year was called The Clairvoyant, and it's about two hours long — if you buy it on vinyl, it's three LPs, and he says that the best way to experience it is to lie back in the dark and listen to the whole thing from beginning to end. It arises out of his interest in spiritualism at the beginning of the 20th century and his perception of the similarities and connections between that era and now. That's one of the topics we discuss in the interview you're about to hear, in fact. And I have to admit I was surprised by how willing, even eager, he was to discuss social issues. A lot of electronic music is deliberately anonymous, deliberately emotionally blank — it's a canvas on which you can paint your own feelings. But it also reflects broader social conditions, as any art produced by human beings inevitably must. Detroit techno represented the frustration and anger, as well as the hopes and dreams, of the citizens of that city, and Underground Resistance, a collective Mills formed with Mike Banks and Robert Hood, was explicitly political, taking on social conditions in their city and the overall politics of the music industry. The third album Jeff Mills put out in 2021 was The Override Switch, a collaboration with Rafael Leafar, who plays a number of instruments on the record, including tenor, alto, soprano and baritone saxophones, clarinet, bass clarinet, contra-alto clarinet, flute, cornet, and a wide range of keyboards. The music they make together is fusion in the purest and most genuine sense: the rhythmic steadiness of electronic music combined with the melodic and harmonic adventurousness of jazz. The individual pieces, and the album as a whole, take the listener on a real journey. And frankly, on a purely sonic level, I find it easy to draw lines between this and the music that people like Stanley Clarke and George Duke were making in the 1970s.Anyway, I feel extremely lucky to have gotten the chance to talk to Jeff Mills for an hour. He's an incredibly busy guy, so tracking him down was a challenge, and the day we were initially scheduled to talk, he had to run from Paris to London, so we moved it, and then when I did catch him, I thought he was still in Paris but it turned out he had returned to London, which meant I was calling him an hour later than expected. Still, it was a fascinating conversation that went in some really unexpected directions. I hope you enjoy listening to it.Music featured in this episode:The Paradox, "Super Solid" (Counter Active)Jeff Mills, "Someone Who Feels Things" (The Clairvoyant)Jeff Mills & Rafael Leafar, "The Sun King" (The Override Switch)

In this episode Paul Fox, Managing Director of Fox Group (Moving & Storage) Ltd discusses that his father Roy (formerly a Pickfords man) started the company in 1971 (and this year celebrate their 50th year anniversary) when he had an opportunity to purchase a small valley's company. We discover that after 8/9 years Paul's father had built the company into Fox The Mover building a couple of warehouses along the way. Paul joined the company working weekends and school holidays to fund his motorcycle habit and started fulltime at the age of 16, starting as a porter and in the garage, and at the young age of 18 through the RTITB (Road Transport Industry Training Board) gained his HGV licence. Before turning 20 Paul was shipped off to run the Cardiff branch (William Flay Removals) under the guidance of Stuart Fitton. We discuss that when Roy took on the BAR Presidency in 1984, Paul (aged 23) was transferred to run the head office in Cwmbran, which consisted approximately of 8 trucks on removals and 8 trucks on distribution. We discover that Roy, together with John Court, Mike Banks, Mike Devereux and a few others formed a co-operative called Britannia Movers International, which was based upon American Van Lines, but Roy left, amicably, in 1986. In 1987 The Pantechnicon (established 1830) was purchased but was an absolute disaster which nearly cost their own business. We discuss that today Fox Group turnover approximately £10m, 40-50 trucks, 120 staff and 14 business units. We discover Paul's challenges have been the turmoil years after buying The Pantechnicon, the recession in 1992, the subprime mortgage crisis in 2007, and of course Covid. We discuss that the one thing Paul would change from his past would be to get an education, however this is not a regret but merely an observation. We discover Paul has several highpoints of being within the industry, BAR (which has been Paul's university from an educational point of view), following in his father's footsteps and taking up Presidency in 2004, eventually getting all the shares of the company and becoming the owner, and building new & refurbishing old premises. We discuss the one thing Paul would change within the industry is yet again 3.5 tonne vans as it is a low entry into the industry, but that may be changing with European Union legislation insisting that vehicles over 2.5 tonne are registered on your operators licence. We discover that the advice Paul would give to himself starting out in the industry again would be to work smarter not harder. We discuss where Paul sees himself and the industry in the next 5 years, for himself he does not see himself retiring, even though his father retired at 60, and industry wise he does hope that 3.5 tonne regulation is enforced, but also believes it is up to the younger generation to be professional and develop their businesses, perhaps becoming better salesmen. We discover that outside of the industry Paul does try to discipline himself and switch off, and is a frustrated sportsman participating in long distance running, cycling and triathlons! And living in a barn conversion with a couple of fields there is always something for Paul to be doing. And as always we end Moving Matters with three funny moving stories, one involving a piano, one involving a bicycle during an institute study tour to Frankfurt, and one involving Mike Devereux and a minibar! #35: One of the most common questions I hear from people in the real estate business is,"Where can I get funding for my next deal??"(Show Notes: https://REtipster.com/35)It doesn't matter what type of real estate investor you are, at some point, you're going to run out of cash. If you want to keep buying properties and grow your business, you'll need some other source of funding in order to stay liquid. Now, there are a lot of ways to deal with the issue. Some investors turn hard money loans, some will partner with other investors who have the cash, others will buy properties with seller financing or work with conventional lenders (until their bank decides they've borrowed enough money). The problem is - all of these "solutions" have some big costs associated with them, and that's why this interview is such an important one.In this episode, we talk with Mike Banks of Fund & Grow. This company has made it extraordinarily easy to get short term financing that charges 0% interest for the first 12 months (at which point, most people will either refinance or pay off their loan through the sale of the asset they purchased with the money). This financing strategy isn't the right fit for every situation, but for a lot of reasons (which we'll get into in this interview), this can make a TON of sense. It offers a combination of speed, flexibility, and savings that few other financing methods can bring to the table. This is definitely one you'll want to listen through to the end!

Mike Banks is the COO and Marketing Director of Fund&Grow and works directly with CEO Ari Page. With over 8 years of success and growth, they have built a thriving business based on offering exceptional service to their customers and a dynamic and rewarding work environment to their employees. Fund&Grow specializes in helping Real Estate Investors and small businesses get Business Credit Lines to fund their investments and obtain capital to grow. F&G builds up to $250,000 at zero percent interest for 12-18 months, the accounts are unsecured so there’s no collateral needed, and they don’t show up on the personal credit report. Fund&Grow has raised over $200M in 0% interest business credit funding for its small business clients, last year alone raised $40M.   Podcast Highlights   Who is Mike Banks? Mike is a regular guy who figured out how to make money and help people. He dropped out of college after realizing it wasn’t going to lead to the life he wanted and got into sales and that’s when he met Ari. Mike took a lot of knowledge from his previous jobs to Fund&Grow that helped them grow substantially in only seven years. Why are SOP’s so important at Fund&Grow? If you don’t know what you are doing, you can’t repeat it and have consistency. You have to record the policies and procedures. Even when it comes to requesting a testimonial or a review, that needs to be documented in order to get results. Your reputation is impacted by your procedures and your ability to deliver results that matter efficiently and effectively. Don’t bore yourself with the monotony of Standard Operating Procedures in the beginning, focus on revenue first. Once you do something a couple of times, it may be a good idea to document it. If you’re going to grow your business, you have to record what you’re doing. Low Interest Business Funding Business credit lines and business credit cards usually come with 0% introductory interest rates and they don’t show up on your personal credit report. If your credit is in good shape, you can get the lines set up within the next 3 to 4 weeks. You can use these type of funds for anything you need for your business. For people with a credit score of 700 or higher, you don’t have to prove income and don’t need a history in order to take advantage of these offers. Fund&Grow has relationships with the banks that make the process much more streamlined and you can often get much higher amounts approved in less time. 30% of Mike’s clients are credit challenged and there are still options for those people. They are very effective at cleaning up credit reports and also offer short term instalment loans that allow them to move personal debt to business debt at low to 0% interest. Mike’s Takeaway Don’t listen to that relative or voice, even Mike has had moments where he questioned his business. Fund&Grow is enabling people to chase their dreams and achieve their goals, they would be more than happy to help you out.   Links: cashflowdiary.com/fundme Thank you for listening! Ryan Enk: So the big question is this, how do you become financially free in today's world where you can do what you love doing, spend time with the ones you love and provide for your family without being chained and selling your soul to a nine to five corporate America job without having to sacrifice going out to eat so you can pay off the debt faster. The question isn't, how do you save more? The question is how do you make more without spending more time. That is the question and this podcast has the answers. My name is Ryan [inaudible] and this is cashflow dad life. Hey, what's up everybody? This is Ryan Enk with Cash Flow Dad Life and I am super excited today because we've got a special guest and I'll tell you about him in a second. But you know, one of the main questions that people ask and getting started is how do they get started? They've only got five grand in their account or they've only got $10,000. They don't have a whole lot of money to work with. And the problem is a lot of people don't get started because they're not aware of all the opportunities and the sources that they can receive funding from. Now I've got a really special guest online, uh, and what they specialize in is helping people get a credit lines that are unsecured, uh, at zero percent interest. And you can get them up to $250,000. So you guys, you got to pay attention to this podcast. Whatever you're doing, stop doing it. And I want you to pay attention to everything and all the numbers because math makes money and having this source of income or this, the source of capital that you can then use. I mean, you could do all kinds of stuff with this. You know, I teach about flipping and making money on Rvs. You could buy an Rv at wholesale at a 40 to 50,000 and rented out with this equity line of credit. You can be cashflowing on and then turn around and flip it for 70,000. You can buy a house, say you qualify for up to 250,000. You could buy a house with an unsecured line of credit for $200,000, then he could turn around and use a, uh, you could become a landlord and you can own or finance it to another person, make 10 to $60,000 down on it, plus cash flow on it, and then he could turn around and refinance this house you own up outright with a home equity line of credit through a bank because you own it outright with an unsecured line of credit. Guys, this is a huge headstart for anybody who wants to get involved in real estate, investing in any kind of investing. Really, this is a starting point of capital. So I don't want. I've already talked to you much, but without further ado, I want to introduce to you guys, Mike Banks. Mike banks is the, uh, is the chief operating officer of fun and grow. He's been there for oversight. They currently get people what they're doing right now. These are interest only. And um, and Mike, are you there? Mike Banks: Yeah, I'm here. Thank you so much for having me today. I'm excited to talk about this resource because like you said, it's a great way for people that are either just starting out or even people that are flipping, you know, doesn't the house the year to take it to the next level and do a couple more flips or buy that off that first rd or you know, put a little more money into their direct mail marketing budget. So I think it's like a really great resource for your group. It's an incredible resource, you know, and how I got started was just by owner financing stuff and finding other people's money through owners that can be difficult sometimes and that could narrow down the amount of opportunities you have. I made a lovely podcast with Sir Paul McCartney's step-mother Angie McCartney, via an introduction from Don. ....http://vincetracy.com/angiemac.html Don first met Angie through a friend called Mike Banks who asked him if he would like to meet Leapy Lee …Leapy is a regular on my shows. They all arranged to meet at the New Brighton Rugby Club and Leapy rolled up with Lee and Angie with her daughter, Ruth…Leapy ended up getting Don a publishing deal with Evolution Records who had a few big names on their books. Don wrote a song for Diana Dors and The Bonzo Dog Doodah Band….then the company went under….a few years later Don was pushing his stuff to various publishers and one of them told him that a guy from his company had moved up North and set up a company in Birkenhead…so round he went…walked in and who was part of the company? - Angie and Ruth who signed him up….they managed Gary Glitter (long before his demise) and Don learnt so much from them that he ended up in 1980 setting up his own company....that's how showbiz works, folks! Don is also a friend of another of my podcast guests, Mike McGear. Mike is Paul McCartney's brother. On one occasion Mike was going down to London to RCA Records to push some of his stuff and asked Don to go along and push some of his own songs.….At that time Don had just produced a single for his wrestling mate Adrian Street . During the visit he played it to one of the bigwigs and watched his eyes slowly glaze over….... he said It was possibly the worst record in the history of music…Don asked him if hecould quote him on that..he agreed…so that went on the label….when Adrian moved to the States he made a video of the song. This is on Youtube along with the others Don did for him…it got MTV play and went into a film…..and paid off Don's mortgage…… ….Don had to laugh at the concert Paul McCartney did recently in New York….the show was running over time and he was halfway through a duet with Bruce Springsteen and they switched the mikes off! …. finally….Don's been working on a doowop song for a new friend in the States….His name is Doowop Joe Conroy and he has a internet radio station in North Carolina...he checked out Don's website and noticed Don writes novelty songs. He asked Don to write one about all the doowop groups….….the song is called “DooWop Days” and can be found on YouTube……http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83mEgF9W5VU

The Cigar of the Week is the American Stogies Cuban Corojo Churchill– 7.0” x 49 American Stogies is a value priced boutique line under the Indian Head brand. American Stogies are manufactured by Nestor Placencia at his Esteli Nicaragua factory. The Cuban Corojo Churchill is a medium to full bodied cigar with a beautiful reddish-brown, oily Corojo leaf wrapped around all Nicaragua tobacco – a puro! The line is a great way to experience that “Nic Zing” that Dale speaks of so often. It is also a cigar that Bob & Dale recommend as an everyday cigar for those who like more strength and kick to their cigars, in a format that does not overpower and a price that does not leave you without lunch money for a week. Not elegant or refined the Cuban Corojo from American Stogies is entirely approachable and delivers enough complexity to hold the interest of cigar passionados. Listener email from Adam on the effects of the SCHIP tax. We run a portion of Dales's Cigar Technicians Journal interview with Frank Herrera of CigarLaw.com. The winner of the Palio a Month contest is Marc Breton! This was the style that at the end of the 19th Century was all the rage for Habanos. A century later, in 1996, this rich tradition was revived at the Romeo y Julieta factory where Cuabas are made.Double figurados are at the pinnacle of the cigar maker’s art and for this alone they merit a place in every cigar enthusiast’s collection. Cuaba, like Cohiba, is a Taino Indian word dating back to the time of Columbus. It was the word for a highly combustible bush, which the Indians used to light their "cohibas". Cuaba is a post revolution brand, introduced for the English market in London. What Else have the DWCR guys been smokin'?
