We got to speak with Dr. Ava Thompson Greenwell back in 2021 about her documentary Mandela in Chicago, which we also got to screen in our podcasting program. The film tells the story of Nelson Mandela's historic visit to Chicago in 1993, three years after he was released from prison and one year before he became South Africa's first Black president.  But Dr. Ava Thompson is not just a filmmaker. She's an Author, Podcast Host, Certified Coach, Speaker, and Award Winning Journalism Professor! Her book, Ladies Leading: The Black Women Who Control Television News, is about the toll racism and gender bias have taken on their professional and personal lives how they have overcome challenges while demanding that their voices and lived experiences be more fairly represented in news coverage. Natalie A. Brown is Chief Executive Officer of Mesirow and a member of the firm's Board of Directors. As CEO, Natalie oversees firm-wide growth and profitability, the execution of strategic initiatives, and shareholder value creation, partnering with the firm's Executive Chairman and Board of Directors to establish and implement all facets of corporate strategy. Natalie joined Mesirow in 2018 as Chief Financial Officer. In this role, she led the Accounting and Finance team, overseeing accounting operations, business accounting, audit and tax, as well as financial planning and analysis. In 2020, Natalie assumed the role of Chief Administrative Officer and, in 2021, she was named President. Prior to Mesirow, Natalie spent nearly two decades with Nuveen, most recently as Managing Director, Head of Nuveen Advisory Services Finance. During her time at Nuveen, she was instrumental in several financial and accounting capacities, including Head of Financial Planning and Analysis and Head of Investor Relations and Managing Director, Finance and Accounting. Prior to Nuveen, she worked at Kraft Foods and KPMG in accounting and finance roles. Natalie is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago and sits on the Board of After School Matters, Big Shoulders Fund and the Executives' Club of Chicago. Natalie is a LINK Unlimited Scholars Mentor and was appointed to the Dean's Council of the Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. She earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business and a Master of Business Administration from University of Chicago's Booth School of Business. This episode is the first of 5 in our Prevention of Eating Disorders series, and is brought to you by Children's Mercy Eating Disorders Center, Kansas City.   Denise Hamburger, JD   Denise Hamburger Denise Hamburger, JD, is the founder and executive director of BE REAL USA, a nonprofit that envisions a world where each and every student can grow up with a healthy relationship to food and their body. In 2017, Denise created a professional development workshop for teachers called Body Confident Schools and has delivered this training to over 5000 educators around the world. Among over 100 conference, keynote, and school presentations, Denise has presented at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health to the National Association of School Psychologists; at the Center for Disease Control to their Healthy Schools Division; at the United States Department of Agriculture to their Food and Nutrition Services Group; at the Society for Public Health Education's Advocacy Summit; and to Amazon's Body Positive Peers Employee Resource Group. Denise co-developed and co-piloted Be Real's BodyKind high school, body image curriculum with a team of international body image academics, psychologists and teachers. Denise is an Anti-bias, Antiracist (ABAR) certified curriculum writer. BodyKind is the first body image curriculum developed for all students. It includes lived body image experiences of people of different races, ethnicities, sexualities, gender identities, physical and mental abilities, and body sizes. She has a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School and was an environmental attorney in her first career. She co-wrote the legal treatise Pollution in the United Kingdom. She has spent the last 25 years involved in education nonprofits, including Chicago's After School Matters. This is our first ever original fiction episode on Power Your Story.  Our producers collaborated on this story about climate change, heroism, and adventure through improvisation based on a comedy writing workshop with writer, media producer, podcaster, and comedian Lisa Orkin. The year is 2025. The news is that a massive climate change event is imminent that will submerge the entire earth under water. Will Bye the Cool Science Dude has hired adventurer Captain Jonas to go on an underwater adventure to find the Lost Kingdom of Jalen-A-Lions. Legend has it that they hold a secret treasure that will save us all. Science students Kevin and Ashley show up to help with their secret skill. Our four heroes will face great danger as they try to save the earth from drowning.
