The Willamette River was running high and wild on the morning of Feb. 5, 1890, as Alden and Arthur Graham set out from Oregon City in their sternwheel riverboat for the daily run to Portland. They arrived in Portland in what must have been record time, dodging logs and small floating buildings along the way, and promptly canceled the return trip. It was just too dangerous to even try charging into the teeth of all the fast-moving debris. But after they arrived, they learned that theirs was the only riverboat between Willamette Falls and the Portland bridges — and there were some things floating down the river that could potentially damage or even destroy those bridges. So, back out into the torrent they went, to the rescue. (Oregon City, Clackamas County; 1890s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/1912e.steamboat-culture-graham-line.html)

In a recent episode of "Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski," former Felony Prosecutor and attorney Eric Faddis discussed the ongoing trial of Karen Read, which has extended beyond the anticipated three weeks into its sixth week, with no clear end in sight. Faddis emphasized the significance of objective evidence in the trial, as opposed to subjective eyewitness testimonies, which can be prone to exaggeration or selective memory. He noted that while the defense's strategy of claiming evidence was planted could be effective, it might also become tiresome to jurors if not substantiated properly. Faddis shared his experiences of law enforcement occasionally tailoring testimonies but doubted the plausibility of a large-scale conspiracy in this case. The conversation also included analysis of specific evidence, such as hair and glass shards found on Read's SUV, which the defense argued were unlikely to have stayed on the vehicle through a blizzard, thus raising questions about the evidence's integrity. Both Brueski and Faddis agreed that the defense's role is to establish reasonable doubt, and despite the complexities and numerous elements of the case, the defense has been effective in creating some skepticism. The discussion highlighted the intricate and often convoluted nature of the trial, underscoring why it has not been straightforwardly classified as a hit-and-run incident. **Main Points:** - The Karen Read trial has extended into its sixth week, surpassing initial expectations. - Objective evidence is crucial in helping jurors determine the truth, beyond subjective testimonies. - The defense's strategy of claiming evidence tampering might lose effectiveness if overused without proper backing. - Large-scale conspiracies involving numerous people and significant risks to careers and reputations are generally implausible. - Specific evidence, such as hair and glass shards on Read's SUV, was scrutinized for its credibility and plausibility of staying on the vehicle through adverse weather conditions. - The defense's objective is to establish reasonable doubt, and they have succeeded in raising some skepticism among observers. - The complexity and numerous elements of the case contribute to its convoluted nature, complicating straightforward interpretations. #KarenReadTrial #EricFaddis #TonyBrueski #ObjectiveEvidence #ConspiracyTheory #ReasonableDoubt #LegalAnalysis Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
