After time in the army and the fire service, Simon Cassin became a health and safety professional, and is now the managing director of a training and development consultancy called Ouch. Unusually for someone working in health and safety, he's dedicated some serious study to understanding the deep philosophical ideas underlying the profession, focusing particularly on the idea of harm. When do consequences caused or made worse by work become harm? What are an organisation's responsibilities regarding harm? And what are the responsibilities of health and safety professionals related to harm and doing good? What do moths have to do with owls? Just ask Mat Seidensticker. After nearly a decade spent studying owls across Montana and Alaska, Seidensticker focused his research on the flammulated owl, one of Montana's smallest and most cryptic species. Soon, it became impossible for him to ignore the moths—insects that this owl hunts extensively during the summer. This story is about moths in Montana, but it's also about moths in ecosystems anywhere: a celebration of their importance and diversity, an invitation to learn. As usual, it includes lots of ambient sound recordings that I made, all of these ones in Montana: flammulated owl, common poorwill (Phalaenoptilus nuttallii), common nighthawk (Chordeiles minor), tree crickets (Oecanthus sp.), aspen (Populus tremuloides) rustling in the wind, Swainson's thrush (Catharus ustulatus), white-breasted nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis), Cassin's finch (Haemorhous cassinii), and black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus). Kilkenny farmer Liam Cassin is on this week's Beef Edge podcast to discuss his contract heifer rearing system. Liam moved from sheep to suckler cows and started contract heifer rearing 14 years ago. The steady monthly cashflow alongside the reduced financial input of purchasing stock are key benefits for Liam. Grassland management and a good paddock system are very important to make the system viable in order to reach the target weights, according to Liam. Initially starting with one dairy farmer, Liam has increased the system to now working with four farmers contract rearing heifers. The dairy farmer visited Liam's farm and viewed the farm and Liam visited their farm initially. From there the business has thrived and each contract is different as Liam describes. In July, a Cassin's kingbird (Tyrannus vociferans) calls from the edge between grassland and pine in Montana, USA. Three months later, I'm among Cassin's kingbirds again but 2000 miles farther south, in their winter range in Oaxaca, Mexico. Over the past year, my life has traced the path of these migratory Cassin's kingbirds—a journey that, for me, has involved falling in love and spending months far away from the Montana landscape I know and love. This is a story of migration, of the memories that birdsongs carry, and of finding a connection to the earth that spans time and space. Along this journey, we meet many birds and hear their voices. Among the recordings featured in this podcast are Montana sounds of Cassin's kingbird, common yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas), grasshopper sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum), Lincoln's sparrow (Melospiza lincolnii), sandhill crane (Antigone canadensis), Savannah sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis), vesper sparrow (Pooecetes gramineus), and western meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta) recorded by me, Shane Sater. From Oaxaca, I share recordings of a Bewick's wren (Thryomanes bewickii), lark sparrow (Chondestes grammacus), lesser goldfinch (Spinus psaltria), loggerhead shrike (Lanius ludovicianus), western kingbird (Tyrannus verticalis), and white-throated towhee (Melozone albicollis). Many thanks to Manuel Grosselet of Tierra de Aves (https://www.tierradeaves.com/) and Jay McGowan of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology for giving me permission to use their Oaxacan recordings of Cassin's kingbirds. Steven and Ryan share how their innovative company is helping entrepreneurs regain 10+ hours a week by matching them with Virtual Executive Assistants who act as partners in success. Bo shares how his partnership with Superpowers has allowed him to focus entirely on his unique strengths, reducing stress and skyrocketing productivity. Steven and Ryan dive into the common challenges entrepreneurs face and how an executive assistant can proactively anticipate needs, solve problems, and help business leaders focus on what they do best. If you're an entrepreneur looking to scale your business, reduce stress, and finally delegate the tasks outside your zone of genius, this episode is a must-listen. Discover how to work smarter, not harder, and why hiring an EA might be the best investment you'll ever make.
Are you overwhelmed by the daily grind, in a state of “suck,” with an overflowing inbox, double bookings, and a constant feeling of putting out fires? Ever thought about hiring an assistant but not convinced it's worth the money, time, and effort to bring one on board? In this episode of Team Success, host Shannon Waller sits down with Steven Neuner and Ryan Cassin, her co-authors of Superpowered: The Secret That Helps Every Entrepreneur Eliminate the Suck, 10x Their Impact, and Have More Fun in Work and Life. Shannon, Steven, and Ryan will shift your mindset about hiring an assistant so you can step out of the chaos and settle on nothing less than 10x growth and freedom. Download Episode Transcript Show Notes: Constant State Of Suck Many entrepreneurs can end up in a “constant state of fire drill” before they decide to hire an assistant. The setup for failure: “Most entrepreneurs show up in the worst possible, least collaborative, lowest energy state to go make one of the most important, most influential, most meaningful hires they're going to make in their business.” —Steven Neuner Mindset Shifts Required Before Hiring Steven coaches desperate entrepreneurs to shift their mindset to see hiring as an investment of time rather than an investment of money. Investing time to grow the relationship with a new assistant pays exponentially higher dividends down the road in both your business and personal life. Another important mindset shift is being courageous and vulnerable enough to let someone else see the backstage of your business. Entrepreneurial Executive Assistant This role requires the assistant to delegate and manage up, rather than the other way around. The assistant's Unique Ability® frees you to stay in your own Unique Ability lane. Entrepreneurs must think of their assistant as a partner on their growth journey, one in which the assistant will also be growing professionally and personally. Entrepreneurial assistants, like entrepreneurs, don't like getting bored; they will want to lead, take initiative, and be creative in areas outside of your Unique Ability. The Secret Many people think of an assistant as someone to whom they can delegate stuff they don't want to do. The “secret” is that your assistant can be your all-around support partner who can give you superpowers and help you expand what you think is possible. The Superpowered Scale Resignation Desperation Frustration Delegation Superpowered Impact On Entrepreneur Support Partners Leveraged support partners find opportunities to respond to challenges, grow, and achieve fulfillment in parallel with their entrepreneur. Many support partners grow into new responsibilities, new roles, and new connections in the organization. On this edition of Parallax views, Emily Peterson-Cassin of the Demand Progress Education fund joins the program in the first segment to discuss the landmark decision made in the Google antitrust lawsuit that saw a judge declare that Google is a monopolist. This is a major win for the antitrust movement and those seeking to challenge monopoly capitalism in America. We'll discuss what this means as well as why anti-trust is important for consumers and workers as well as society as a whole. Additionally, we'll discuss the billionaire attacks on FTC chair Lina Khan by billionaires like Reid Hoffman who dislike her antitrust agenda. Recently, Hoffman donated millions to the Kamala Harris campaign and then went on TV to talk about how he'd like to see Khan sacked form the FTC. Supporters of Khan have accused using his status as a mega-donor to curry favor with the Harris campaign in the hopes that a Harris administration will repay him by removing Khan from her position. We'll discuss all of this as well as the work Khan and Jonathan Kanter of the DOJ's Antitrust Division have done over the past four years of President Joe Biden administration. We'll also discuss how Khan, Kanter, and others have inspired a new generation of antitrust enthusiasts that want to break up concentrated corporate power's grip on America. In the second segment of the show, The American Prospect's Macy Stacher joins the show to discuss his article, "Waffle House Workers Challenge the Southern Economy". Waffle House workers are fighting back against ridiculously low, non-livable wages as well as lack of safety at their jobs, wage theft, meal deductions policies, and, overall, labor policies of the Jim Crow-era that have persisted in today's American South. You may have heard about the phenomena of "Waffle House Fights" that go viral on Twitter and garner chuckles in social media, but what is happening to Waffle House workers who face safety risk and a lack of concern from corporate office in Atlanta when it comes to their needs and rights is no laughing matter. We'll discuss how the Union of Southern Service workers are changing all that and the struggles that Waffle House workers like Cindy Smith, who is prominently featured in Macy's article, face regularly. Macy will also explain how the Atlanta HQ of Waffle House locked out protesting workers and threw out their petition. But even with all the grimness of what these workers face, we'll also delve into the successes they've been able to achieve especially in regard to wages recently. All that and more on this edition of Parallax Views.

Los gorriones de Botteri añaden sus distintivos chisporroteos y trinos. Y un gorrión de hombros canela expresa su suave melodía.

“The underlying structure of the Universal Declaration was influenced by the Code Napoléon, including a preamble and introductory general principles.[14] Its final structure took form in the second draft prepared by French jurist René Cassin, who worked on the initial draft prepared by Canadian legal scholar John Peters Humphrey. The Declaration consists of the following: The preamble sets out the historical and social causes that led to the necessity of drafting the Declaration. Articles 1–2 establish the basic concepts of dignity, liberty, and equality. Articles 3–5 establish other individual rights, such as the right to life and the prohibition of slavery and torture. Articles 6–11 refer to the fundamental legality of human rights with specific remedies cited for their defence when violated. Articles 12–17 set forth the rights of the individual towards the community, including freedom of movement and residence within each state, the right of property and the right to a nationality. Articles 18–21 sanction the so-called "constitutional liberties" and spiritual, public, and political freedoms, such as freedom of thought, opinion, expression, religion and conscience, word, peaceful association of the individual, and receiving and imparting information and ideas through any media. Articles 22–27 sanction an individual's economic, social and cultural rights, including healthcare. It upholds an expansive right to an adequate standard of living, and makes special mention of care given to those in motherhood or childhood. Articles 28–30 establish the general means of exercising these rights, the areas in which the rights of the individual cannot be applied, the duty of the individual to society, and the prohibition of the use of rights in contravention of the purposes of the United Nations Organization.[15] Cassin compared the Declaration to the portico of a Greek temple, with a foundation, steps, four columns, and a pediment.[16] Articles 1 and 2—with their principles of dignity, liberty, equality and brotherhood—served as the foundation blocks. The seven paragraphs of the preamble, setting out the reasons for the Declaration, represent the steps leading up to the temple. The main body of the Declaration forms the four columns. The first column (articles 3–11) constitutes rights of the individual, such as the right to life and the prohibition of slavery. The second column (articles 12–17) constitutes the rights of the individual in civil and political society. The third column (articles 18–21) is concerned with spiritual, public, and political freedoms, such as freedom of religion and freedom of association. The fourth column (articles 22–27) sets out social, economic, and cultural rights. Finally, the last three articles provide the pediment which binds the structure together, as they emphasize the mutual duties of every individual to one another and to society.[16]” -Wikipedia --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

We're dropping this episode a bit before March—a dreamtime month for many THR readers and podcast listeners. March is on the cusp here in the Northern Hemisphere of longer days. All that translates into more time to move through the mountains—often with warmer temps and more stable avalanche conditions. This episode is handy if you need a little push to get the wheels turning, dream, be inspired, or push yourself out of your comfort zone.Let's get to it.On the Emergence Episode, we chat with Sam Hennessey, Michael Gardner, and Adam Fabrikant. We'll provide links below if you are unfamiliar with any of these three folks. If you follow the podcast, Adam has been on before. And yes, he still shines. For Sam and Mike, this is a first.Emergence. The podcast's title, which we vacillated on, is spot on. According to the Wiki, "emergence occurs when a complex entity has properties or behaviors that its parts do not have on their own, and emerge only when they interact in a wider whole."In this instance, the wider whole can be the group construct: three experienced individuals bringing their strengths and weaknesses to an endeavor and exceeding, in a unique way, the attributes of any individual. The wider whole also includes a vast physical landscape full of possibilities, including technical and endurance challenges, pitfalls that include high-gravity situations, and the potential for interpersonal conflict. We mostly focus on an excellent 2021 adventure by Hennessey, Gardner, and Fabrikant. Here are the basics of their mega-push: a climb of Denali's Cassin Ridge, a first ski descent of the mountain's Northwest Buttress, and an exit on foot across the tundra to Wonder Lake. Beyond the slog across Denali National Park's lowlands, this episode also features some fine ski alpinism done in good style. The good style we speak of also translates to the group at large. What makes these three individuals compelling is not simply their questing in the mountains but the real sense that Hennessey, Gardner, and Fabrikant care deeply about one another. That, folks, is a huge ingredient for any successful endeavor, which also gifts smiles and laughter.Let's set the ski alpinism scene. In 2019, Hennessey and Gardner climbed the Infinite Spur on Sultana (Mount Foraker) in ski boots with skis secured to their packs on a 48-hour trip. Yes, they descended on skis. The first ascent, a storied one at that, was completed by Michael Kennedy and George Lowe back in 1977 over 11 days. Then, in 2021, Hennessey and Gardner climbed a new route on the Isis Face of Denali's South Buttress in their impeccable ski alpinism style. Climb in ski boots with skis along for the ride and ski as much of the descent as possible, ultimately bringing them to the Kahiltna Glacier, the main jumping-off point for the main Denali ascent route. The two took a few rest days, then climbed a highly technical route on the North Buttress of Begguya (Mount Hunter) to the summit—this time sans skis and ski boots. As rest and recovery, Hennessey and Gardner guided the West Buttress route on Denali, as did Fabrikant. From there, the plan to climb the Cassin as a trio and make a first ski descent down the mountain's Northwest Buttress was hatched. After their respective guiding obligations, Hennessey, Gardner, and Fabrikant climbed the Cassin, skied the Northwest Buttress down to tundra, and walked out to Wonder Lake, where they snagged a bus ride back to Talkeetna. Resources—Mike Gardner wrote an excellent summary of their season, which listeners/readers can find here.—Hennesey's piece in the American Alpine Journal titled "Ski Seasons: Modern Ski Alpinism in the Alaska Range" is here.—To learn more about Hennessey and Gardner's fast and light ethos in technical ground, here is a collection of stories/podcasts on their speedy ascent, along with Rob Smith, up Denali's Slovak Direct.Slovak Direct PodcastFast times on Slovak DirectSingle Push on Denali's Slovak Direct—this podcast features Matt Cornell, Steve House, and Rob Smith (not Hennessey or Gardner). Summary: Finches visit Arizona in the winter. Join Cheryl and Kiersten to find out which finches may visit us in winter. For our hearing-impaired listeners, a transcript of this podcast follows the show notes on Podbean. Show Notes: “Arizona's Winter Finches,” by Charles Babbitt The Cactus Wren-Dition Winter 2023 Transcript Cheryl-Intro Some finch species are highly prone to irruptions-which are occasions when large numbers of birds take flight and regularly move hundreds of miles beyond their normal winter ranges in response to food scarcity especially cone and seed crop failures. Kiersten and I did a podcast last year about irruption in the bird world so check out that podcast to get more information. In the winter of 2022-2023 was such a situation when Evening Grosbeaks, Cassin's Finches, Red Crossbills, Pine Siskins, and Lawernce Goldfinches were reported in large, unprecedented numbers at many locations around the state of Arizona. These are the nomadic winter finches of Arizona. Kiersten-Red Crossbills The Red Crossbills are the oddest of the group. When you get a close look at their bill you will see what looks like a deformed beak with the lower mandible crossing under the upper mandible. This allows the crossbill o pry open tightly closed cones to extract the seeds, an evolutionary adaption that gives them access to a unique food source. Red Crossbills are resident breeders in much of Arizona's upper elevation forests. In flight years, however, irruptions can bring roving flocks from out of the state swelling numbers in mountainous areas and sometimes bringing these boreal invaders into the lowlands such as the Phoenix Valley. Cheryl-Pine Siskins Pine Siskins are one of the smaller winter finches often confused with the House finch. These little birds are year-round residents in Arizona's high country they are famous for their periodic irruptions. Movements are irregular and sporadic with birds being quite common some years and entirely absent other years. Pine Siskins have sharp narrow bills they use to extract seeds from the cones of a variety of conifers. In winter, flocks are often seen at feeders, with the Lesser Goldfinch and the House finch, or in weedy fields. These birds are quite personable and a person can get quite close to them before they will take flight. Pine Siskins are recognized by their steaky breasts and the bright yellow markings on their wings. In flight they show a distinctive yellow wing stripe. Kiersten-Evening Grosbeaks Of the winter finches, Evening Grosbeaks are the most striking. These stocky birds have evolved massive cream-colored beaks which are unmistakable and which are used like nutcrackers to feed on a variety of large seeds, catkins and even small fruit pits. In northern Arizona these birds might be seen feeding in winter on Russian olive fruits and juniper berries. Male Evening Grosbeaks are yellow and black with a distinct yellow forehead and eye brow and large white patches. Females are mostly gray with a yellowish-green collar and black and white wing markings. In Arizona Evening Grosbeaks breed very locally in the high country. In the winter they form large noisy flocks. Like the other winter finches Evening Grosbeaks have irruptive years, and when they do these birds delight bird watchers and the bird feeding hobbyists by crowded around seed feeders to eat sunflower seeds. Cheryl-Cassin's Finch Cassin's Finches are restricted to northern Arizona mostly the regions of the Kaibab Plateau and higher elevations of the Hopi and Navajo tribal lands. In the summer you are most likely to see them in pine and mixed conifer forests on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Males are easily recognized by their bright raspberry red caps and rosy tinged faces and breasts. Females are plainer with streaked breasts. Cassin's finches are migratory and irruptive with great variability in distribution and abundance. In some winters they can be quite common and be found in the low foothills of the phoenix Valley. When they are around, they visit finch feeders, often mixing with Pine Siskins, and other local finches. As spring warms the foothills you can spot these hardy finches gathered in trees where they sing incessantly. Kiersten-Lawrence's Goldfinches Some years Arizona is visited by winter finches not by the north but from the west. These are Lawrence's goldfinches, colorful birds whose breeding range is mostly the coastal ranges and foothills of the Sierra Nevada of California. There these birds occupy a variety of habitats including dry foothills, open woodlands and adjacent grasslands. In sporadic and unpredictable flight years some depart their breeding range, heading eastward in the southern part of Arizona. Lawrence's Goldfinches are a soft gray color with gold markings on the wings and chest. Males have black faces with contrasting pink bills while females tend to be less colorful. Lawrence Goldfinches are seed eaters. As with the other winter finches, seed crop failures due to drought or even more recently, massive wildfires are probably the principal driver of this birds' periodic movements into Arizona. Cheryl-Closing The question has been asked if scientists will ever be able to predict winter finch irruptions. Maybe. East of the Mississippi River, with the data compiled and the network of observers, the bird world enthusiasts attempt predictions of which winter finch will have a flight year. But in the west and especially the southwest with our mountainous terrain, diverse and widely separated habitats, and the lack of a network of observers, predictions are unlikely. Truly the unpredictability of the Arizona's winter finches is what keeps the mystery and excitement in the sightings of these birds when they appear.

From Sparks to Light - Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times
Back on the podcast this week is my dear friend Gregg Cassin. Gregg is an HIV/AIDS activist, a public speaker and someone I've known since our college days back in Boston. He is also someone who has dedicated his life to serving the HIV/AIDS communities, bringing healing to those whose lives are impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The focus is simple. To bring people together to build community because as Gregg knew intuitively from the very first days of the epidemic, community has the power to heal. Gregg works in San Francisco for Shanti Project, an organization that is celebrating it's 50th anniversary next year, where he leads a program for long term survivors of the epidemic called Honoring Our Experience. This month on From Sparks to Light we are joining forces to launch a special project, the Honoring Our Experience Series. Each month on the last Thursday of the month we will introduce you to some of the people who have experienced the epidemic firsthand, people who have found that when we share our stories and build communities, healing happens. Today Gregg joins us to take us back to the early days of the epidemic and the experiences that lead him forward. You can learn more about Honoring Our Experience and Shanti Project, here. You can support the work of Honoring Our Experience here. The Mountains test us, and shape us. We cannot lower the mountains. So we must elevate ourselves to their level. We should strive to choose goals in life that will challenge us, test us and that we think are impossible. Only through aiming at the highest peaks we can possibly envision will we truly transcend the suffering of the world to find meaning and purpose. For some this may be being a good life partner, having kids and enjoying the outdoors. For others it may mean climbing the wildest and gnarliest lines possible. Our guest today at the age of 23 has managed to complete a lifetime of climbing accomplishments and he's just getting started. Nathan Longhurst is an endurance athlete and climber. In our conversation we discuss how he climbed the infamous Bulger's List at the age of 21. This consists of climbing Washington's 100 highest peaks. As crazy as that is, it pales in comparison to his journey climbing the Sierra Peak Section (SPS) which involved climbing 247 peaks in 138 days. This accomplishment is mind blowing and a true feat of grit, endurance and logistics. Finally we chat about Nathan's solo ascent of Denali's infamous Cassin Ridge. Nathan climbed this with skis and ski boots. A mind blowing accomplishment. Nathan is clearly a master in the mountains. Please rate, review the show, and share this podcast with your friends. Midday temperatures in southeast Arizona soar above 100 degrees during the month of July. But relief is coming. A summer monsoon refreshes the Sonoran Desert like a second spring. Grass grows lush, wildflowers spring forth, and birds sing. Cassin's Sparrows sing their plaintive phrases almost nonstop. Botteri's Sparrows add their distinctive sputters and trills. And a Rufous-winged Sparrow — like the one pictured here — voices its gentle melody. The sounds heard in this episode were recorded by Gordon Hempton and provided courtesy of QuietPlanet.com.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. This was recorded early on a clear spring morning in the forest near White Deer Lake in Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Siskiyou County, California. The recording starts about an hour before sunrise as the birds were just beginning to sing, and the frogs were winding down their nighttime chorus. You'll hear many different birds on this recording including Great Horned Owl, American Robin, Hammond's Flycatcher, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Mountain Chickadee, Cassin's Vireo, Western Tanager, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Hermit Warbler, Red-breasted Nuthatch and more. One sound I was particularly happy to capture is the booming wing sound of the Common Nighthawk, which is made by males as they dive at females during courtship.
