Unlocking the Secrets of Childlike Faith: Analysing Mark 10:13-16

SummaryUncover profound wisdom in embracing childlike faith through our lessons from Mark 10:13-16. IntroductionWhen I was a child, every evening when I went to bed, my parents would encourage me to kneel beside the side of my bed, and sing: Gentle Jesus, meek and mild,Look upon a little child,Pity my simplicity,Suffer me to come to thee. Charles Wesley (1707-1788)Used By Permission. CCL Licence No. 135015Copied from The Song Book of The Salvation ArmySong Number 583A childlike faith indeed! But I like to think it stood me in good stead. Our passage this week allows us to explore the profound theme of learning to believe in Jesus with a childlike, trusting faith, even when we come to adulthood, and perhaps no longer kneel at the side of our bed and sing our prayers before we go to sleep. Jesus Loved Being Interrupted by Those With Childlike FaithIn this passage, people brought their children to Jesus, seeking his blessings. The disciples, however, initially considered them an interruption. But Jesus, in his infinite wisdom and compassion, welcomed the children, saying, "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children." Having Childlike FaithThis moment offers us a glimpse into the kind of faith Jesus encourages us to have – a faith like that of a child. Children often possess a trusting and innocent faith, unburdened by doubt or cynicism. They approach life with wide-eyed wonder, embracing the unknown with open hearts. Childlike faith involves letting go of our adult scepticism and approaching our relationship with Jesus with the innocence and trust of a child. It means believing without always needing to see, and trusting even when circumstances seem uncertain. The Simplicity and Trust of a ChildAs you go about your day, consider how you can infuse your life with this childlike faith. Approach your relationship with Jesus with the simplicity and trust of a child, and you'll find a deeper sense of peace, hope, and joy. Remember, it's okay to have questions and uncertainties, but embracing childlike faith means acknowledging them and choosing to trust in Jesus anyway. In doing so, we open ourselves to the abundant blessings and transformative power of his love. So, how can you embrace a childlike faith in your walk with Jesus today? Reflection QuestionHow can you cultivate and nurture a childlike faith in your relationship with Jesus? Are there doubts, worries, or burdens that you can lay aside to trust him more fully? Photo by Natalya Zaritskaya on Unsplash Battle Drill Daily Devotional Podcast This WeekThis week on the Battle Drill Daily Devotional Podcast we witness Jesus welcoming the interruption of children, and encouraging us to have childlike faith. IntroductionGod has the biggest and best gift you could ever receive. It's his grace. It's the gift that keep on giving, because as the songwriter reminds us: His love has no limits, his grace has no measure,His power no boundary known unto men;For out of his infinite riches in JesusHe giveth, and giveth, and giveth again. Annie Johnson Flint (1866-1932)Used By Permission. CCL Licence No. 135015Copied from The Song Book of The Salvation ArmySong Number 30Accepting God's Grace is EssentialThere is just one catch: you have to accept it. God's grace is like any other gift. It is of no value to us, unless we receive it. Accepting God's Grace Can be DifficultYou may be holding off accepting God's grace, because you feel unworthy. When we think about all the wrong things we have done in our lives, the many times we have rejected God, and moved away from him instead of moving towards him, it is natural to be worried he might not love and accept us. After all, that's a very human reaction. If someone rejects us, hurts us, and does wrong by us, our human nature wants to reject that person in return. Accepting God's Grace TodayBut God is not like that. He will never reject us. Whatever we've done, whoever we have been, he still loves us and longs to give us his grace. If you are overwhelmed by shame today, you can get rid of it. The grace of God can teach you to love God and draw closer to him. It is impossible not to love God when he loves you so much! Will you accept God's grace today? Think It OverThink about the following: How do you respond to God's grace when you realise it is a gift and not something to be earned? Read Psalm 89:1-52. What's your favourite carol? Have you sung it yet this Christmas? I have so many, it's difficult to pick just one. But this year, I have been struck once again by the words of It Came Upon the Midnight Clear: For lo! the days are hastening on, By prophet bards foretold, When with the ever-circling years Comes round the age of gold, When peace shall over all the earth Its ancient splendours fling, And the whole world give back the song Which now the angels sing.    Edmund Hamilton Sears (1810-1876) Used By Permission. CCL Licence No. 135015 Copied from The Song Book of The Salvation Army Song Number 111 It speaks of so much hope and peace in a world that seems hopeless and conflicted so often. Why are Christmas carols so popular? It's because they are an accessible way for us to express the wonder of God's love. All of us can sing (well, make a noise, at least!). So since the earliest of times, humans have sung their love to God. As the psalmist says: Psalm 89:1 NLT I will sing of the Lord's unfailing love forever! Young and old will hear of your faithfulness. Can you hear the psalmist's heart as it opens wide to God? Can you sense the fervency and devotion? Let's be so amazed by God's love this Christmas that it gives an extra polish to our carol singing! If you haven't sung your love to God yet this Christmas, or you haven't sung your favourite carol yet this year, it's not too late. Go to a carol service, or find one on radio, television or online and sing your heart to God. THINK IT OVER Think about the following: •          Which line in your favourite Christmas carol best expresses your love for God this Christmas?

This Sunday's Inspirational Message is: "Practical Christian Living!" As believers, we have a goal and a purpose. How different that is from the world around us. We don't live in fear. We don't live with despair. Why is that? Because as a son or daughter of God most high we know the following: Philippians 3:20 NAS95 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. We are but temporary citizens of this world. We are just a passing through. In the meantime, we live with proper discipline and proper Christian living. We have reason to rejoice. Why is that? Because a day is coming when Jesus Christ will return for His own.  * * * * * * Once again, thanks for joining us in our time of worshiping the Lord through His Word! This Sunday's Inspirational Message is "Straining Towards The Goal!" The Apostle Paul demonstrated that a true believer of the Lord is to live a life just as disciplined as an Olympic athlete. He actually says that we are to keep our bodies under control just as much as the athlete. The believer must run as diligently as a runner at the Olympic Games. The believer must put out the same kind of vigorous effort in order to reach the finish line. Sadly, many believers do not have their eyes fixed on Jesus and are no longer running the race God has set before them. How are you running the race? Is your reason for running to honor Christ and to enter heaven? Maybe you haven't really given much thought to how you've been running your Christian race. But it's time you start.  * * * * * * Once again, thanks for joining us in our time of worshiping the Lord through His Word! This Sunday's Inspirational Message is "Working Out One's Salvation!" You may have heard the adage . . . There is no such thing as standing still in one's Christian life. One is either moving forward or one is regressing - that is, moving backwards! I once read that too many Christians operate like parked cars. The only way they move is if they are pushed. Others might keep their car washed and polished, but they fail to give proper attention to the engine that supplies the power. What is my point? My point is this: A saved person is not to be sitting around doing nothing and letting the chips fall where they may. A saved person is to get up and go to work.  * * * * * * Once again, thanks for joining us in our time of worshiping the Lord through His Word! This Sunday's Inspirational Message is   "Living Worthy Of The Gospel!" As Christians, we sometimes feel like we must ask the following questions. "Am I worthy of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who gave his life so that I might live?" "Have I lived a life worthy of ‘earning' this sacrifice?" Pastor Byran Chapell said the following in response to this: Is your life "worthy" enough to "earn" the sacrifice of Jesus Christ in your behalf? The answer is, No, and the reason is that God never intended for you to have to "earn" the sacrifice because you could not. On the cross the debt for your sin and mine was paid in full. We are not made worthy of Christ's sacrifice by our merits but by his mercy. Jesus paid the debt for those who would never be good enough for a holy God. What are we then to do in response? We are to live in a manner that reflects our love for him; to live in a way that shows the worth of his gift.  * * * * * * Once again, thanks for joining us in our time of worshiping the Lord through His Word! This Sunday's Inspirational Message is   "The Gospel Marches On!" What part do you have in promoting and advancing the Gospel of Jesus Christ? You already know the answer to this question. One place the answer is found is in: Acts 1:8 NAS95 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth. In Acts 1:8 Luke records Jesus assigning the believer's greatest task - the great commission. Our participation in the process of spreading the gospel around the world is not an option. Though eternity is coming, now is the time for witnessing to the lost - sharing the great salvation that is found in Christ. Also keep in mind that God's Holy Spirit equips the believer - providing him/her with the power to carry out this task. The answer to our earlier question is also found in: 1 Peter 3:15 NAS95 But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence. Because Christ is the only hope of salvation the believer is to answer back and to give a defense of their hope. The believer is to miss no opportunity to witness for Christ. We are not to neglect nor are we to ignore anyone. At all times we are to be ready to give an answer for and defend the hope we have in Jesus Christ.  * * * * * * Once again, thanks for joining us in our time of worshiping the Lord through His Word! This Sunday's Inspirational Message is   "Healthy and Mature!" How many of you. . .when wanting to measure something must to search all over the house for a tape measure or a ruler? Now, I should be able to find a tape measure by the saws in the garage. However, often when looking, I then realize I used it somewhere else and obviously did not put it back. I usually spend more time looking for the tape measure than it takes to measure whatever I was going to measure! Does that sound familiar to any of you? We measure many things in life. We use a ruler or tape measure to measure physical things, and use various tests to measure the content and healthiness of our lives. Though Paul addresses some issues in the church at Philippi, the epistle to the Philippians is Paul's most joyful letter, and references his joy in the faith and the people of Philippi. It is recognized as the most personal of his epistles. He encourages the Philippian believers to. . . • rejoice despite suffering and anxiety, • rejoice in serving Jesus Christ, and • continue to look to Christ as the object of their faith and hope. Join with me over the upcoming weeks in investigating, enjoying and applying the letter to the Philippians to our own lives.  * * * * * * Once again, thanks for joining us in our time of worshiping the Lord through His Word! In this episode of Serving Jesus Christ, Pastor Swanson shares an inspirational Sunday Message titled, Whatever Happened To Truth? We live in a time when truth is viewed as relative. Many people live under the premise of. . . "You have your truth and I have my truth." The fact of the matter. . . however. . . is that truth is not relative. Truth is truth. Personal choice is not part of the equation. Black is not white. . . nor is white black. You cannot claim that an orange chair is purple just because you want to. . . and you cannot mandate that everyone go along with your claim. However, that is exactly what is happening in our world. Truth is being redefined. . . and is being done so with an energy usually reserved for items of great importance. The way words, terms, and concepts are defined matters a great deal in culture and society. Today, one such quest is to rewrite history. . . forming it along lines of an alternate reality. We are seeing this take place as well within Christianity. In order to create an alternate reality that corresponds to the wishes of culture and society, many words, terms, and concepts within Christianity are being redefined. However, as we all know, God's Word is truth. . . it is not relative nor directed by the whims and needs of a culture or society or even the church. They create the structure and order that we associate with many of our memories.   For instance, our memories of the rituals and traditions of birthdays, Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving are often appropriated by us as we raise our own families.   However, when we apply this concept to our faith it can provide for, or create, a faith that is only based and focused upon tradition, ritual, ceremony, and works.   In our spiritual life, traditions or rituals do not trump God's Commandments.   If you desire further information, it may be obtained at wordgiver@gmail.com.  * * * * * * If the link to download the worksheet is not present within your podcast feed, it may be downloaded at: https://servingjesuschrist.libsyn.com/ Scripture Quotations: New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995). Though titled, The Battle For Your Mind, I considered naming the message, The Seduction Of Your Mind, or Teetering Between Two Worlds. Each title forcefully notes the Christian's struggle of today. What is that struggle? We live in a world that exerts a great deal of pressure against anyone who seeks to honor Christ. As such, you and I must admit this fact. . .and then deal with it. Consider the following statement: As a follower of Jesus Christ, our calling is to be salt and light within our culture and society. Do you believe that? Why or why not? I believe it to be the truth. After receiving Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior our ultimate calling is to be salt and light within our culture and society. Being salt and light means: Being ready to share the gospel. Living a life that exudes the love of Jesus Christ. Living a life that accurately represents Jesus Christ. Engaging in the previous three points regardless of the pressure or danger which may be present. Let me rephrase and emphasize this point: The fact that we receive pushback or experience persecution from our culture and society does not excuse us from operating as the hands, feet, and voice of Jesus Christ in this lost world. In this episode of Serving Jesus Christ, Pastor Swanson shares a Sunday message titled, Where's My Battle Armor? Most of us harbor the thought that the Christian life should be more trouble-free. . . that we shouldn't need to worry about any enemies of our soul. That would be great, wouldn't it? A day is coming when this will be true, but for now, as human beings living in this fallen world, we must deal with a seriously hungry adversary. 1 Peter 5:8 NAS95 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. I have noticed that many Christians do not understand the intent and capabilities of their adversary the Devil. It is almost as if they do not believe that the devil is real. They do not take the time to put on the armor of God. Throughout this letter to the Ephesians, the Apostle Paul has carefully crafted and established what our position is in Christ. There is no question that the Apostle Paul desired the very best for the believers at Ephesus. Paul wraps up his letter to the Ephesians by expressing his desire that they, and other Christians, would be successful in their Christian walk. He shares the tools. . . that is, the armor that God has provided. In this episode of Serving Jesus Christ, Pastor Swanson shares a Sunday message titled, Eating The Right Food! Did you know that your destiny is to live forever?  Maybe that thought has not crossed your mind. Perhaps, you think that the statement is false. Perhaps your first thought upon hearing such an assertion is to think of that funeral you attended last week or last year. By all accounts the person lying there in the casket is dead. He/she is no longer alive - they did not live forever.  And yet, though their body is now in the ground or their ashes in an urn, they continue to live - to live for all eternity. The only question yet to answer is where? Where are they living? Many today are hopeful that upon the death of their physical bodies nothing remains - that nothing follows them after death. Such a hope resides in the modern-day philosophical belief of Annihilationism which is the belief that unbelievers will not experience an eternity of suffering in hell, but will instead be extinguished after death. However, we are immortal beings! Either we will be in the presence of Jesus Christ for all eternity or living with the devil and his angels. There is a great difference between these two dwelling places. Is it possible to be kind, compassionate, tender-hearted, and yet bitter at the same time? Can we live as forgiven sinners and not forgive others? Our faith in Jesus Christ should affect every area of our lives. Most certainly, all those around us should be able to discern a significant internal change. Overall, our entire lives should be different because of what has happened to us. In this week's message, the Apostle Paul paints a picture of how the believer is now to live. The phrase standing strong certainly applies to our Christian walk.   The prophet Daniel had no interest in being thrown into a den of lions, but as we will see, he finds himself in the den for standing up for that which was right and true. In a nutshell, the book of Daniel tells us how to live for God in a hostile environment. Would you call the world we live in today an unfriendly environment? It is certainly making progress in that direction. Daniel's example shows us that living in such an environment can be accomplished, but not without discomfort. By definition, it must be this way because they do not have the power to fundamentally change the individual. They are all based on reformation rather than transformation. As such, they are based on works, on what is often described as works righteousness. What kind of religion do we need? We need one that has the power to forgive our sins and to graft us into the family of God. We need one that has the power to fundamentally change the individual from the inside out. We need one that assures us that we are truly children of God and that we will be with Him for all eternity. We need one that prompts our hearts to share what we have received with others.
