Thank you to the Walls Group for “Lord I Need You.” No rights owned. Col. 2:6-14 Check Yourself This book, Colossians, was written while Paul was in a Roman prison. The church that had been planted had been infiltrated with false teachings and all kinds of worldly philosophies and religions. It had even gotten to the point where many were denying the Deity and power of Christ as God and Savior. Well, when we look around today, we see many of the same type of ideologies. We see people who, rather than look to Christ for answers, they push man-made approaches to life's problems that totally disregard God. Let's look at some modern-day philosophies/practices.  All of these are not bad entities. These can be wonderful ways to practice our faith and live out our belief in Christ, but the problem comes in when we try to practice these things APART FROM GOD, because when we leave God out of the equation, then we are practicing a false religion and as Christians, then we are no better than pagans that depend on their idols to do for them what they cannot do.1. Legislation2. Pay it Forward3. Gratitude4. Meditation5. Time ManagementA. The 12 Week YearB. The 4-Hour Work Week6. Managing and Communicating w/People But these things alone, cannot accomplish for us, what we need. As the song says that we just heard, Lord I tried it on my own           Put faith in me           But the truth came to be           Lord I need you! Lord I need You! So Paul in his letter to the Colossians gives them some practical advice that I want to share with you today. Things that we need to remember and to practice in our own lives so that we don't fall prey to the world's empty strategies that might work for a while, but then live us stranded in days to come.  So, check yourself and make sure you are living out the right belief system.  1. Know that the saved life means:A. Rooted and built up in ChristB. Strengthened in the faith—practicing having faith in the things that the Holy Spirit is guiding you to say and do—no matter how non-sensical it may seem at the time. When David went to fight Goliath with  a sling shot and 5 stones, it did not make sense, but his obedience got him the victory.C. Overflowing thankfulness as Paul says at the end of v. 7 2. Don't be taken captive by these things:A. Hollow and deceptive philosophies like those who live their lives by following the stars and astrology and such thingsB. Human tradition and worldly specific forces—The Church is one of the main culprits of this—Jesus is the same, yesterday, today, and forever, but He is a progressive God—so updating the way we do church, the way we give, the way we display our faith to others is not wrong. Keeping traditions will not save us. 3. We must remember:A. Christ is the head of all of us. We didn't create ourselves and we can't save ourselves.B. He made us alive because we were in essence dead in our sins and trespassesC. He nailed all our legal obligations and indebtedness—all our sin to the cross and canceled. So now we are free to live our lives to the fullest –allowing Him to live through us—realizing and knowing that He knows what's best for us and truly loves us. So today—Again I say Check Yourself before you Wreck Yourself. We need God. We cannot do this alone. But with Him—all things are possible. God Bless You. Subscribe to enjoy all episodes of God's Toolbox.

This episode is brought to you by the Worship Leader Institute.   When is the last time you spoke the name of Jesus over someone? Has God ever asked you to do something radical like walk away from the Church for a year to rediscover him? In today's episode, we feature a remarkable story followed up by an uncomfortable challenge surrounding our “priesthood” from Jesse Reeves. He's a church planter and a prolific songwriter with hundreds of titles to his name including How Great Is Our God, Lord I Need You, Indescribable, Our God, I Speak Jesus and a bunch more. He bases his challenge on this verse from 1 Peter. I Peter 2:9-10 says, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy." It's important to note that both Jesse and all of us here at Authentic Media and Worship Leader are massive fans and supporters of the local church. Please listen to this episode through the filter of iron sharpens iron and don't be afraid to reevaluate the status quo. After hearing this episode we challenge you to pray for the Holy Spirit's guidance and just see what God says. We are rooting for you and believe in local bodies of Believers living out the way of Jesus in community. Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. This podcast is brought to you by Authentic Media and Worship Leader Magazine. Our host is Joshua Swanson and the show's co-producer and editor is Matt McCartie. More episodes can be found here. Who is Jesse Reeves?  Jesse Reeves is a songwriter, musician, church planter, and father. As a songwriter, he has co-written several songs that are sung in the church around the world today including “How Great is Our God,” “Our God,” “I Will Rise, “Lord, I Need You,” and more. As a musician, Jesse spent 17 years leading worship, touring and playing bass guitar in the Chris Tomlin Band. As a church planter, Jesse and his wife, Janet, have been a part of planting The Austin Stone Community Church in Austin, Tx and Passion City Church in Atlanta, Georgia. He and Janet have four children and live in Austin, Tx, where they pastor a network of house churches called KingsPorch.

When his father-in-law, Jethro, saw all that Moses was attempting to do he encouraged him to enlist others to help him with the work. Though being repeatedly warned of the danger that awaits him in Jerusalem, the apostle Paul continues forward, “ready not only to be imprisoned but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus” (Acts 21:13). Each of us is called to follow Jesus, but we do so not sure of where he may lead us. Might the Spirit of God strengthen us to follow him wherever he may lead and would we move forward confidently regardless of what is to come. 1. Paul was convinced (vs 22-24)2. A cornerstone to living poor in spirit is living with an acknowledgment of our need for God. We must learn to tap into our weakness and lean on Jesus in all things if we want to experience the blessing of God's grace. The beauty of God's way is that it will always turn the ways of our world on its head. To be strong you must become weak. To be rich, you must be poor. To find, you must lose. Our Scripture for today comes from Isaiah 57:15, and today's worship is Lord I Need You by Elevation Worship feat. Chris Brown. First15 is a daily devotional written and recorded by Craig Denison. Sound doctrine should lead to right behavior, and in Titus 2:1-10 the apostle Paul gives specific instruction for various groups within the church. While it can be counter-cultural to modern ears, Paul's direction finds its foundation in the gospel itself and highlights the behaviors that make not only families strong, but creates churches that point an unbelieving world to Jesus. 1. Teach sound doctrine (v. 1) a. Older men (v. 2) b. Older women (vs. 3-4a) c. Younger women (vs. 4b-5) d. Younger men (v. 6)2. Be an example (v. 7-8) a. After the Passover meal, Jesus and his disciples went to a place called Gethsemane, where Jesus was greatly distressed and troubled at his impending death. Though abandoned by all, Jesus sought not his will but the will of his father. The disciples' failure to stay awake reminds us that, though our spirits may be willing, in our flesh we are weak. 1. It was a night of agony (vs. 32-34)2. It was a call to commitment (v. 34b)3. It was a night of determination (vs. 35-36)4. It was a display of weakness (vs. 37-42)5. Our Scripture for today comes from Isaiah 57:15, and today's worship is Lord I Need You by Matt Maher. First15 is a daily devotional written and recorded by Craig Denison. A young man thinks that his acts of righteousness should secure him eternal life. Jesus reveals the duplicity of the young man's heart by instructing him to sell all that he has. Regrettably, “he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.” (Mark 10:22b). We must never allow the accumulation of earthly wealth to supersede our love for God.1. All too often our prayers can center around ourselves, our loved ones, or those closest to us. The apostle Paul sets a radical example in that he prayed, often, for those he had never even met! We too should work to ensure our prayers are not self-centered but also include lifting up brothers and sisters in Christ, even though we may have no earthly relationship with them at all. It can begin by praying more for those in our church!1. Pray for others (v. 9)2. Pray for their “walk” (vs. 10-14) a. For “fruit” (v. 10b) b. For knowledge (v. 10c) c. For strength (v. 11) d. In the Apostle Paul's Acts 17 sermon at Mars Hill in Athens, he reaches the hearts and minds of his audience by using the non-Christian worldviews of the day as a platform from which to communicate the gospel. Today we find ourselves in a secret battle of ideas in which bad ideas penetrate our hearts and minds like viruses and give us unfulfilling answers in our search for love, healing, purpose, peace, and hope. Like Paul, we can learn to spot the fake worldviews of our day and reignite our passion to know and share the power of Jesus to meet our culture's deepest needs.1.
