How Venturer Scouts from the 23rd Nepean Scout Group kept their heads during the Jasper wildfire evacuation. Podcast Topics Scouter Ken is joined by Cadence James (National Youth Commissioner for Scouts Canada, and a Rover Scout with the 23rd Nepean Scout Group), Molly Prevost (another Rover Scout with the 23rd), and Foster Millett (a Venturer Scout with the 23rd) to discuss their trip to Jasper National Park...which saw them arrive just prior to the massive wildfire that devastated much of the area. It's a story that Scouts Canada has retold in a few places already, highlighting the resilience of the youth and the attitude of preparedness that Scouting equipped them with. All of that comes out in the conversation, as does the value of being able to find the good in a crisis situation. Programming Note: The podcast is going to shift its production schedule a bit for 2025. There will probably be just one full-length episode per month, with shorter news & PSA episodes filling in the other weeks. Shout-Outs Cadence's shout-outs include Lucas Normandeau and Krystal Reid (both with Cascadia Council), Willa Holmes (from Northern Lights Council), and all the Venturers and Scouters who came on the trip. Molly and Foster's shout-outs include all the Scouters who came on the trip: Mike Hubbard, Brian Bezaire, John James, and Devin Morrison. Youth between the ages of 14 and 17 can also volunteer as Scouters, at least in Scouts Canada. Podcast Topics In their first in-person sit-down session of the year, Scouter Ken and Scouter Colin discuss Youth Scouters. This is an extension of the volunteer apparatus within Scouts Canada that allows minors (between the ages of 14 and 17) to go through the training and interview process that adult volunteers must complete to become Scouters. Youth Scouters count toward ratio requirements as long as at least two adult Scouters are also registered with the section (apologies: Ken said one Scouter in the episode; it should be two). Importantly, however, Youth Scouters do not count on the “youth” side of a section's ratio; they count as Scouters, and so do not have to be interacted with according to the Two-Scouter Rule. Youth Scouters can be a great way for Venturers to give back to their groups, accruing volunteer hours as they do. And for groups who are strapped for volunteers, Youth Scouters might just be what's needed to allow a section to run its program for the year. Shout-Outs A shout-out to Emily who wrote in regarding Episode 88, which concerned orienteering: "Just listened to Episode 88, Orienteering (2019). You mentioned don't get your compass near a big, powerful magnet — guess what? I absent-mindedly put my compass into a zipped breast pocket during a break at land navigation training, RIGHT ON TOP OF MY SMARTPHONE. When I went back out on the course, I was totally baffled: suddenly, I couldn't orient myself. I'd been doing so well!!! I couldn't find the objectives or identify drainages, and I couldn't pass the field exam. Embarrassing! I was mystified. It took a couple of days for it to dawn on me that I had demagnetized my compass by putting it in my pocket lying atop my smartphone. It was completely useless, and pointed in random directions!! Live and learn." It's been three years since the Colston statue was toppled, thrusting the Merchant Venturers - the elite club with a history of the worst kind - into the limelight. But for many years prior, Christine Townsend had been on a mission to fight what she sees as discriminatory practises of pupil selection, starting off with Merchant Venturer run schools in Bristol. Now a Green Party councillor, Christine is a thorn in the side of the Mayor and others. But with the Greens poised to win further power in Bristol at the next local elections, how might an activist move into a position of power and all the challenges that entails? Hosted on Acast. Venturer Scouts turns fifty this year...in Canada, at least. ----more----Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher | AnchorDownload episode: MP3 Podcast Topics It seemed only fitting to close out 2018 with a discussion about Venturer Scouts, the second-to-oldest youth section in Scouts Canada. Why? Because it was fifty years ago — 1968 — that the Venturer Scout section was formally introduced to the Scouting program in Canada.Venturer Scouting actually began in Australia, and then in the mid-1940s. Similarly, Senior Scouts — the program that eventually became Venturing in Scouts BSA — began in the late 1930s. So whereas 2018 also marks the global 100th anniversary of Rover Scouts, the 50th anniversary of Venturer Scouts that is being marked by this episode is specific to Canada. As such, Ken and Colin recount some memories of their time as Venturers, and also discuss the program and some of the changes it has seen in recent years, especially under the Canadian Path...particularly as regards awards and badges. The Queen's Venturer Award is the capstone award for Venturer Scouts, and can almost be thought of as the Canadian analog of the Eagle Scout rank. Subscribe on iTunes | Subscribe on Google Play | Subscribe on Android | Like Us on Facebook | Follow Us on Twitter----more----Podcast Topic(s) Ken and Colin discuss the Queen's Venturer Award (good historical information, but out-of-date requirements), the Top Section Award for Venturer Scouts. Under the new Canadian Path program that Scouts Canada has launched, the requirements for the award have changed significantly, especially since one of the principal requirements is the completion of a meaningful service project at the local, national, or international level. Venturer Scouts are youth aged 14-17, and it is generally understood that one has up to a year after the end of one's time in Venturers to complete the requirements of the Queen's Venturer Award. As such, achieving the award can be thought of as the equivalent of achieving Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouts of America.Shout-Outs As always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience. Medvents receive increasingly advanced medical training over the course of the program. Their training is put to good use providing volunteer First Aid support at Scout camps and charitable events.” Colin is absent this week, as is Brian, but we are happy to be joined by Erik Atkinson, one of the advisers of the Northern Lights Medical Venturers Company; we discuss the history of MedVents, and what this Vocational Scouting program entails. Also referenced in this episode: “Medvents.ca is a site maintained by the 1st Downsview Group which provides more information on Medical Venturers.”Shout-Outs Firstly, a shout-out to Mark Burge, who interacts with us on Twitter now and again. And to Ken Rachynski as well, who thanked us last week for linking a story about how to choose a good knife. Two additional shout-outs go out to Home Depot and Cashway Lumber, the latter in Leander, Texas. Home Depot gave Trevor — the son of podcast contributor Brian — a very steep discount on his first purchase of materials for his Eagle Scout project. What programs are available, in Scouts Canada and Boy Scouts of America, for older youth and young adults?Subscribe on iTunes | Subscribe on Android | Like Us on Facebook | Follow Us on Twitter----more----Podcast TopicKen, Colin, and Ted were saddened to learn that their once and former Rover Den — a cabin on Lake Wabamun in Alberta that, as members of the 59th Greenfield/Royal Gardens Rover Crew, they had come to know as their own and cherished as a special place to retreat to — had been burned to the ground to make space for more campsites for the Scout Camp within which it had been located. But out of this, a discussion emerged about the differences between what sorts of programs Scouts Canada has for youth and young adults in the 17+ age range, and what programs Boy Scouts of America has for the same demographic; Brian joined the discussion to fill us in on the latter. We bring you the best archaeological competition ever! The most amazing competition we've ever run! A chance of a lifetime! Flag Fen is a lakeside Celtic site which has become revealed as the years have taken all the water away. Now is your chance to take part in the incredible Flag Fen Lives project! It is estimated that a large part of the site will be lost within the next 20 years if work is not carried out now. That is why Flag Fen Lives is so important and our competition will put you right in this real-time, hands-on discovery of Ancient Celtic life! Work at Flag Fen has given a fantastic insight into the type of woodworking technology that existed some 3,000 years ago. The remarkable preservation of the timbers has led to more detailed interpretation of our prehistoric ancestors. Flag Fen is a continuing research project and we frequently make discoveries that cause us to change our interpretations. Regular visitors to the site will notice slight alterations to guided tours run throughout the summer. As our work advances and our research develops, we gain a clearer picture of life at Flag Fen 3,000 years ago. So remember, what you read (or are told) is only the current state of research. One of the most exciting aspects of Flag Fen is seeing it change and develop as more work is undertaken We hope you enjoy it and wish you good luck! Drawing on the Bardic traditions his performances are both entertaining and educational, weaving a tapestry of myth, peace, and anthems that speak directly to the heart, but never without a good splash of humour. This beautiful track, from the album The Hills They Are Hollow, is the based on the Celtic view of the Otherworld but to us, it also refers to the Sacred Land of the Celts as it still exists, and Flag Fen is a superb example of Celtic Sacred Land. You can find his music on iTunes, or from his website, Pagan Music. He is also the voice behind Druidcast, the official podcast of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids (OBOD, for short) - modern day Druids. The Flag Fen Rescue Project Flag Fen is home to a wooden causeway some 3,500 years old that is so unique it is held by experts all over the world in the same esteem as Stonehenge. It has many secrets – many of which are about to be unearthed in a ground-breaking new dig. The ancient wooden monument is a marvel of engineering. A kilometre long, the causeway and platform have been perfectly preserved in the wetland for centuries. It was built by Bronze Age people as part of what is thought to be a place of worship. Clues to its past are still to be discovered – so get on down to Flag Fen this summer with archaeologists from Channel 4’s Time Team! Vivacity has teamed up with DigVentures to offer a number of opportunities for everyone to get involved from 24 July to 12 August. Adults aged over 17 can take part in the dig for a day, weekend or even the whole three weeks. There is also a Summer School for 8 to 12-years-olds, a host of activities for all the family during the dig including flint knapping, bronze casting and prehistoric cooking as well as live updates of the excavation and discoveries as they happen online throughout the dig. For information on Dig Ventures and the chance to take part in the dig click here. "With the Flag Fen Lives project, DigVentures is launching Europe’s first-ever crowd-funded and crowd-sourced archaeological excavation. We will be building a community with archaeology at its heart: our funding ‘Venturers’ will be a part of the project from start to finish. The only difference will be the benefit level that you purchase." [source] The fieldwork at Flag Fen, an amazing Bronze Age site located in Peterborough, will be the first project to be undertaken by the team – you can read more about the archaeological objectives of the 2012 season here. "Our work will be an essential part of saving the archaeology and giving the site a future life, and all we need to do is to raise £25,000 to make this incredible project happen. You and your friends can be a part of it – by supporting us through buying benefits, and even joining us on site. The more you contribute, the more involved you can become – from being one of the first to receive the site report, to rolling up your sleeves and actually taking part." You can find out more about DigVentures and the 'Save Flag Fen' project on the DigVentures site or make a donation and take part in this amazing work by visiting Sponsume. About Flag Fen The story of Flag Fen begins right back in 1982. The site was discovered when a mechanical digger working on one of the Fen drainage ditches pulled up some timber that appeared to have been split in a very distinctive manner. The team of archaeologists, led by Dr Francis Pryor, sent the timber for radiocarbon dating and it was returned having been dated to 1000 BC. And now, the saga continues! The archaeological excavations at Flag Fen have been concentrated over the years on the areas that are under threat of drying out.The site has survived due to waterlogging and now that the site is gradually drying out, the archaeologists are working to retrieve as much valuable data as possible before it is all lost. It is estimated that a large part of the site will be lost within the next 20 years if work is not carried out now. About our Flag Fen Competition Thanks to one of our very generous listeners, Scott McGovern, we can offer you the prize of a lifetime! The chance to visit Flag Fen, one of the largest Sacred Water sites in Europe, and take part in the archaeological dig for a day and listen to a fascinating lecture in the evening! This is an amazing prize and we give our heart-felt thanks to Scott for enabling one of our lucky listeners to be so intimately involved with real-time, ground zero research into the everyday and sacred lives of the Ancient Celts! Not only that, but we can also tell you that DigVentures have told us that shortly after the competition they will be opening up the few remaining places on the digs so that those that missed out during the chance for being on site can still do so, and the 'Site Hut' will still be available to others for a minimum donation to the project! Ruthie and I have our cups of tea already booked in the Site Hut and we'll try to keep you updated with discoveries as they are made, but why not come and join us for a cup of tea in the hut everyday and see what's going on? :) Woman of the Earth by Spiral Dance Multi-award winning group Spiral Dance, based in Adelaide, has been playing rousing, high-energy music to enthusiastic audiences throughout Australia and beyond for over a decade.
