They were married in 1966, raised Ranjeet and Joti together, and remained close collaborators, through all difficulties, throughout 60 years of struggle. Her thoughtful tribute is both moving and profound. This video was shot in January 2025 at Harpal Brar's memorial service in Bolivar Hall, London. It was a moving tribute and celebration of his life, held with his friends and family, representatives of Socialist nations and fraternal political organisations. Many comrades spoke in moving and generous terms, giving solidarity with his family and party, and paying tribute to his political contribution. There is a fundamental distinction between different groups who call themselves 'left'. On the one hand, there are leftists who are only nominally 'left' but ultimately right in form as the results of their actions are contradictory to what they preach, and on the other hand there are leftists who are both left in name and in form: Marxist-Leninists. There can of course be no unity with incorrect stances and correct stances just as there can be no unity between purveyors of the market, and those who call for its abolishment. Marxist-Leninists do not seek to unite the so called 'left'; they seek to educate, organise, and unite the working class for its liberation. In India, carrying a Bible to a meeting—or even offering a Hindu tea and cookies—could be construed as illegally "enticing" that Hindu to change his or her religion. Under anti-conversion laws currently enacted by 12 of India's states, such "enticement" can result in a long prison sentence. And once charges are filed against a pastor or other Christian, there is no presumption of innocence; it is up to the accused to prove their innocence. Sister "Joti," a human rights lawyer in India, has worked on numerous religious freedom cases. She will tell listeners about 80 pastors currently in prison, accused of "forcible conversion." Listen as Joti shares how the courts have tried to navigate the seeming opposites of a constitutional promise of the freedom to practice and propagate one's religion and state laws that require a person to notify the government, in advance, of their conversion. She'll also tell how she and her coworkers are advising pastors and churches to document interactions with Hindus and even record their sermons in order to create an evidence trail against possible future legal challenges. Joti knows her work could put her in danger, yet boldly continues in what God has called her to do. "The work impacts real lives and real people," she says. "I am here to serve, for as long as I can." I'm John VK4JPM, Secretary of the Club with a heap of good news for this week. Firstly congratulations to highly enthusiastic club member Brad, who last weekend upgraded himself from Shortwave Listener to Foundation Licensee. It might even be that by the time you hear this Brad will be on air as VK4BLL. Our next member meeting is Monday 10 November at regional Scouts HQ in Victory Street Newtown. EMR is the topic - that's Electro Magnetic Radiation, the stuff that happens when charged particles are accelerated and put to some hopefully good use. Beyond the need to do something useful with the radiation comes the requirement to understand how to play safe. Too little EMR and you won't be able to communicate with anyone. But when there's too much EMR you might well have problems ranging from annoyed neighbours to seriously dangerous health issues. We're being joined by John VK4JBE who will introduce an EMR Safety Site Management Book, designed to help amateurs record all the information necessary to use the WIA and RSGB tools, and ensure that you are complying with the requirements of your ACMA license. John has taken other clubs through this topic and the feedback has been very strongly positive... rather like some of the EMR that he will discuss. That's on Monday 10 November from 1900 AEST and held in person at Victory Street, and also by telepresence. Last weekend on Saturday October 18 the club hosted a major JOTA/JOTI event at the Denmark Hill clubhouse. A total of 153 enthusiastic young people turned up across the day. Of this number there were 40 Guides, 80 Joeys and Cubs and 33 Scouts and Venturers. The day ran from 9am to 8pm with Joeys and Guides present before 1pm and Scouts and Venturers after 3pm. Various activities included orienteering (using handhelds) in the bush adjacent to the clubhouse (Denmark Hill Conservation Park), electronic kit building, 20 computers for JOTI chats, as well as Minecraft, and the obligatory contacts made on VHF via All Star and HF. The 2025 JOTA/JOTI event was supported by eight members from the Ipswich and District Radio Club. It was a great day, only interrupted by a late storm which did its best to try and launch a gazebo in the direction of Toowoomba! Reporting from Ipswich this is Allan, VK4HIT. Similarly, workers of the world recognise the pervasiveness of similar propaganda within their own trade unions which are often complicit with the bourgeois propaganda of the ruling elite. As a result, workers today, Brar relates, feel powerless in the absence of strong leadership within their unions. Stressing the need for workers to start making demands of their unions and governments, Brar runs through a list of demands upon which we must all insist, from the breaking of links with the pseudo-leftist parties such as the Labour Party in the UK or the Democratic Party in the US, to refusing to allow the state to oversee the running and organisation of unions, and the building up of strike funds. The 18/19 October weekend plans for JOTA and JOTI are still being finalised with Toowoomba Scouts, but by the time this segment goes to air we might have some arrangements locked down. We are well down the process of scheduling Foundation Licence training and examinations for the weekend, and while we are aiming at Scouts in particular the sessions will be open to anyone. Speaking of which, last weekend our club Education Officer Dave VK4JPS supported a pre-JOTA Foundation Licensing course where 14 Scouts successfully gained their Foundation licences. When inflation is wiping out pay and increasing numbers of people are homeless in the richest countries in the world, is it any wonder that more people are starting to look favourably at the alternative (ie, at socialism)? We talked about the militarisation of the police as governments prepare to suppress rising dissent and unrest. And we talked about the militarisation of the economy as governments prepare to put the whole of society on a war footing. We also looked at the role of the new home secretary Shabana Mahmood, a muslim woman whose job will be to front up the ruling class's pro-zionist, anti-free-speech and anti-immigrant regimes here in Britain. We discussed the situation where police in Britain continue to carry out mass arrests of peaceful protestors holding cardboard signs in solidarity with proscribed organisation Palestine Action, even as British armed forces continue to participate directly in the genocide in Gaza. With all this evidence, it's time we woke up to the fact that neither the capitalist state machinery nor the bourgeois electoral system can be used to solve the very urgent problems we face.
