This week I spoke with Garland Nixon about the growing militarisation of western economies and societies: what is driving it and how is it impacting our lives? We talked about the huge propaganda drive against Russia, the constant talk about war spending and conscription and the multitude of ways in which the talk of existential threats and increased war spending are being normalised. We also talked about the threat that is posed to British imperialism by the anti-genocide movement, which, at its core, is an anti-imperialist movement. The need to suppress such activities explains the efforts the state put into to rig the trial of the Filton Six (who took direct action against the Zionist/Imperialist war machine in Britain) as well as the draconian targeting of health workers who oppose genocide in Britain. It is in this context that Dr Ranjeet Brar and the Right to Protest organisation have launched a judicial review to try to overturn NHS England's decision to adopt the IHRA 'definition of antisemitism' – a device which allows managers to discipline and even fire health workers who express support for Palestine and opposition to Israeli genocide. We discussed the connected between imperialism and fascism, and imperialism and terrorism, and the way in which both are used to create proxy forces and an element of deniability to imperialist suppression and warmongering. The imperialists are the principal terrorists in the world today. There is nothing more terroristic than the conducting of genocidal wars against people whose only crime is to live in a place where sovereignty is considered absolutely intolerable by the overlords of monopoly finance capital! We noted the painful coincidence whereby the forum convened less than 48 hours after the horrific terrorist attack by the Nato/Kiev junta on a girl's dormitory in Russia (Starobilsk, Lugansk, to be precise), and discussed the rationale behind the systematic and deliberate targeting of children by the imperialist war machine today. What do western ‘strategists' hope to achieve by perpetrating such outrages, which are certainly NOT accidental? We also talked about the doublespeak indulged in by imperialist politicians and media, whereby on the one hand they create forces of real terrorism which they CLAIM to be opposing (while actually supporting them), and on the other hand label all their opponents, whether internal antiwar activists or external freedom fighters, as 'terrorists' who must be suppressed in the harshest way possible – for the 'protection' of the wide population, naturally. ______________________________________________ Subscribe! Why were we in Nairobi joining an anti-imperialist conference and then a street protest against the France-Africa summit in the first place? What is France's interest in Kenya, and what is the Kenyan government's role in Nato and in the African front of WW3? And what can three days and nights in police cells teach us about the nature of the Kenyan state and its relationship to its own people? What do the conditions and processes we experienced there reveal about the nature of neocolonial rule in Africa? One other notable aspect of our incarceration was that while it was major news in Kenya and some other parts of the world, the British media, British political establishment AND the British 'left' (antiwar movement, trade union movement, 'independent' media, various 'communist' and 'socialist' parties) all maintained a strict silence over the event. No one here seemed remotely interested in highlighting the unlawful locking up of a British citizen and anti-imperialist activist in a nation that is known to be a close 'ally' (proxy) of Britain. Meanwhile, the political nature of our detention was made very clear to us, since the Kenyan state had to break its own constitution and the police had to override all their own procedures to keep us locked up for so long without bringing us to court. It was made clear that the orders came from 'on high', but HOW high? Were those giving the orders inside or OUTSIDE the country? The fight for freedom and sovereignty in Kenya and Africa continue, and our comrades in the CPM Kenya are building a broad movement that aims to carry through the national-democratic revolution that was denied the people in 1963. Their activities and the growing anger of the impoverished masses has clearly put fear into the ruling comprador elite and their imperialist paymasters. What is its true content and who does it serve? Can working people really influence the structures of power and governmental decision-making? And if not, why not? We talked about the class nature of the state and democracy, and highlighted the prejudices which are instilled so deeply in workers' heads from such a young age that we find it hard to see past the shibboleths of ‘everybody knows ...' and recognise the extent to which we have been lied. We also discussed the steady shift away from ruling by consent to ruling by force, and the role that political policing is now playing in western societies. True to form, the British ruling class has introduced political policing in a roundabout, arms-length way, by creating and funding allegedly ‘independent' (zionist) organisations which are turning out to be thoroughly embedded into the state machinery, but which allow the government to retain plausible deniability. Add it all together and what you have is a set-up whereby it won't be very long before a person who speaks out or acts effectively against zionism and in favour of the resistance to imperialist/zionist genocides and war in the middle east will be: 1. arrested, 2. fast-tracked through a judge-only court straight to jail, and then 3. debanked and kicked out of the country with their citizenship removed (another nice little move that the government is currently experimenting with, without a murmur of opposition from any MP, 'antiwar' or trade union mis-leader). The silence of the 'British left' is shameful but not surprising. What have we learned about the difference in the ways the imperialist and anti-imperialist countries approach war? We discussed the fact that Iran has for decades held off using its real nuclear option: domination of the Hormuz strait. The fact that is it using it now shows that the war that it knew would eventually be forced upon it has finally arrived. And for Iran it is existential, and the outcomes it is fighting for are non-negotiable. We compared Iran's objectives fighting Nato and the Zionist proxies with Russia's in its fight against Nato and the Banderite proxies, and noted that they are almost the same: removal of military threats against the country; removal of fascist proxies on the doorstep; acceptance of the country's sovereign right to determine its own affairs in peace; reparations. Meanwhile, despite a bit of ‘hesitation' (partly owing to genuine disputes about how to proceed and partly for public consumption), the rest of the imperialist camp is ultimately going all-in on the USA's war against Iran. Because they know that their economic system is on the verge of total meltdown, and war is their only possible salvation. And they also know that they will ultimately stand or fall as one. Those of us who live in the imperialist countries need to be doing everything possible to organise a real anti-imperialist mass movement here at home. Iran, Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, Russia, the Sahel states, Venezuela, Cuba are all on the front lines of this war, sacrificing their lives in the fight against our common class enemies. We spoke about Peter Mandelson's role in the Labour party, and the dangerous game being played by opponents who are keen to use the revelations for party-political point-scoring. A prolonged focus on the Epstein scandal might seem like a heaven-sent distraction from all the imperialist warmongering and looming economic catastrophe, but it could end up exposing and ruining not just a particular politician or party, but the whole system of bourgeois rule in the eyes of the people. Along the way, we also asked why so many independent media commentators continue to repeat imperialist lies about Venezuela's leadership having ‘sold out' and the USA's regime-change operation having been successful, although there is still no evidence to support such assertions and every reason to treat them as US psyop narratives. We noted the weaponisation of the Nazi holocaust of European jews and of a new definition of '‘antisemitism', and talked about how these are part of a propaganda narrative that seeks to use the suffering of one group of people during one imperialist holocaust (the jews murdered by the Nazis) to justify the perpetration of another holocaust (against the Palestinians by the zionists of Israel). Finally, we noted the work of Comrade Ranjeet Brar and the Right to Protest organisation, which is currently crowdfunding to cover the costs of a judicial review it has filed for to question the legality of rolling out the IHRA ‘definition of antisemitism' across the NHS and its entire workforce. In India, carrying a Bible to a meeting—or even offering a Hindu tea and cookies—could be construed as illegally "enticing" that Hindu to change his or her religion. Under anti-conversion laws currently enacted by 12 of India's states, such "enticement" can result in a long prison sentence. And once charges are filed against a pastor or other Christian, there is no presumption of innocence; it is up to the accused to prove their innocence. Sister "Joti," a human rights lawyer in India, has worked on numerous religious freedom cases. She will tell listeners about 80 pastors currently in prison, accused of "forcible conversion." Listen as Joti shares how the courts have tried to navigate the seeming opposites of a constitutional promise of the freedom to practice and propagate one's religion and state laws that require a person to notify the government, in advance, of their conversion. She'll also tell how she and her coworkers are advising pastors and churches to document interactions with Hindus and even record their sermons in order to create an evidence trail against possible future legal challenges. In this episode, Joti Brar, chair of the Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist–Leninist CPGB-ML), discusses the compassionless media coverage of the genocide in Gaza and the obfuscation of the horrors of the siege in Gaza, much less the fact that contrary to legacy media, the violence has gone on for far longer than two years. Similarly, workers of the world recognise the pervasiveness of similar propaganda within their own trade unions which are often complicit with the bourgeois propaganda of the ruling elite. As a result, workers today, Brar relates, feel powerless in the absence of strong leadership within their unions. Stressing the need for workers to start making demands of their unions and governments, Brar runs through a list of demands upon which we must all insist, from the breaking of links with the pseudo-leftist parties such as the Labour Party in the UK or the Democratic Party in the US, to refusing to allow the state to oversee the running and organisation of unions, and the building up of strike funds. Brar also notes how workers are increasingly disenfranchised and angry as governments promote culture wars and tribalism (eg. climate change, immigration, and gender ideology) in order to pivot workers against each other, while media and politicians collude with each other, promoting one side as wrong, the other as right, leading populations to bypass reason and to identify with the ruling class. Brar also chronicles the root problems of mass migration, a phenomenon primarily caused by wars and the follow-up looting process promoted by Western nations, all while the imperialist class benefits from paying the bare minimum in immigrant wages while driving a wedge between members of the domestic working class and the immigrant working class, creating an anti-migrant fear. Covering the positive influence of her father, Harpal Brar, on her political education, Brar historicises mid-twentieth century Marxist organisation within Britain in which both her father and mother participated. When inflation is wiping out pay and increasing numbers of people are homeless in the richest countries in the world, is it any wonder that more people are starting to look favourably at the alternative (ie, at socialism)? We talked about the militarisation of the police as governments prepare to suppress rising dissent and unrest. And we talked about the militarisation of the economy as governments prepare to put the whole of society on a war footing. We also looked at the role of the new home secretary Shabana Mahmood, a muslim woman whose job will be to front up the ruling class's pro-zionist, anti-free-speech and anti-immigrant regimes here in Britain. We discussed the situation where police in Britain continue to carry out mass arrests of peaceful protestors holding cardboard signs in solidarity with proscribed organisation Palestine Action, even as British armed forces continue to participate directly in the genocide in Gaza. With all this evidence, it's time we woke up to the fact that neither the capitalist state machinery nor the bourgeois electoral system can be used to solve the very urgent problems we face.
