Lou DiVizio opens the show with news from around the state. Then, we turn our attention to federal cuts made to AmeriCorps, the government agency that's trained generations of Americans to help others. Until recently, AmeriCorps employed thousands to help others statewide — from Taos to Ruidoso, and in cities and pueblos in between. Now, the federal agency is a shadow of what it once was, as most of its staff have been fired and millions of dollars in federal grants have been axed. Host Nash Jones speaks with U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., to discuss President Trump's gutting of AmeriCorps, and what he and the state are doing about it.The Albuquerque Sign Language Academy is one of several local programs hit hard by the AmeriCorps cuts. Jones recently sat down with Rafe Martinez, the academy's director, as well as former AmeriCorps board member Alvin Warren to discuss the federal cuts and their impact in communities across the state.State Sen. Jay Block, R-Rio Rancho, introduced a bill during this year's legislative session to create a program similar to the Department of Government Efficiency. Unlike DOGE, Block tells senior producer Lou DiVizio that his proposed program will not shrink the government workforce, nor target what the Trump administration calls “woke propaganda.” Host: Lou DiVizioSegments:U.S. Sen. On this week's conversation Paul and Wally discuss a bizarre article in Sunday's Albuquerque Journal by MLG's Secretary of Higher Education about NMSU president search. Rob Black to become MLG's economic development secretary. Is this a good sign on the Gov.'s economic policies? MLG and Democrats celebrate ground breaking of taxpayer funded abortion clinic in Las Cruces. Maxeon stock prices hits 9 cents per share (and moves even lower) Judge Cindy Leos' awful track record. A chart we found online indicates that New Mexico is actually THE poorest state in the US. Swedish automaker Volvo becomes the latest car company to abandon its pledge to be EV only by 2030. As mentioned Paul was in Ruidoso last week. Here's what he heard and saw.
MLG's latest education secretary departs. Paul and Wally discuss the depressing reality of education policy under MLG. I attended the APS state of the district address. Here's what I saw. Kamala Harris no longer claims to support EV mandates. Is she just lying about her policies at this point? RGF tracked down the cost of Dona Ana County's new EV charging stations. RGF is hosting two upcoming events (one in Albuquerque and one in Clovis) on the electoral college/voting. It was a deadly August in Albuquerque. Paul saw the Reagan movie over the weekend and really enjoyed it. We were told that this would be a record-setting hurricane season. Where are all the hurricanes? Also, this was supposed to be a bad monsoon season in New Mexico. So far that has not been the case. Paul is heading to Ruidoso for a talk tonight. This will be his first time in Ruidoso since the fires this summer.

Send us a Text Message.Hey there fellow true crime enthusiasts! Pour yourself a drink and join us as we discuss the murder of Mary Ann Moorhouse in Lincoln County, NM. Alerted to an intruder on the massive Coe Ranch, Mary went to investigate. Unfortunately, there were two pieces of information she didn't have.
On this week's interview Paul talks to Steve Jones, the GOP candidate to run against uber-left-wing Democrat Melanie Stansbury in Congressional District 1. Jones had been living in Ruidoso before the latest fires so Paul and Steve discuss that, but they quickly get into the myriad issues facing CD 1 and his solutions to them. They also discuss Stansbury's radical record and Jones' eclectic personal background. If you live in New Mexico's first congressional district or care what happens there, don't miss this episode!

Biden drops out, we have questions (lots of them). NM's special session was a dud. On the bright side the ABQ Journal's John Trever had a great cartoon about it. The Salt Fire and several smaller fires around Ruidoso earlier this summer were arson. According to a Learner.com report that includes higher education, NM spends more than all but 3 other states on education. Paul argues that we should make firing government workers common again. Paul's opinion piece discusses his recent opinion piece on the Kids Count results and why we can no longer blame a lack of money for them. California EV sales drop. It has become one crisis after another for the Village of Ruidoso lately. Within hours of the South Fork and Salt Fires sparking, the entire village was under evacuation as the fire quickly spread to homes and businesses. At least two people were killed in the wildfire, around 1,400 structures were burned, and the feds are now offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of person(s) responsible for the fires. This week, Chris and Gabby talk with a 74-year-old veteran who lost his home in the wildfire and stayed behind to help family and neighbors save theirs. Welcome to episode four of our Fire in the Southwest Series, supported by the Southwest Fire Science Consortium as well as the Arizona Wildfire Initiative! Today's guest, Zander Evans, is the executive director of the Forest Stewards Guild, which has a mission of promoting ecologically-, economically-, and socially-responsible forestry as a means of sustaining the integrity of forest ecosystems and the human communities dependent upon them. Based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Guild's team—including Zander, who has worked there for over 17 years—has seen the first-hand impacts of some of the most destructive wildfires of the last two decades, including the 2022 Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak Fire.Zander and Amanda spoke about the role of the Forest Stewards Guild in helping provide more capacity for often resource-strapped agencies, as well as how their roles are shifting with the legacy and rise in megafires like the CC/HP Fire. We discussed the Guild's objective to connect work on the ground to policy, while creating a network of land stewards that can learn from each other and share resources, lessons learned and other critical information that can help others dealing with similar issues across the country. We covered a lot in this episode, and in classic form, Amanda asked many difficult-to-answer questions that Zander did a great job of tackling—including questions about trauma-informed community engagement, how to continue to get good work done within a legacy of escaped prescribed fires and how communities can more effectively prepare for the "post-fire" piece of the resilience equation. Last week, we shared the first installment in Geoffrey Spangler's story. You learned that Geoffrey left his Las Cruces home on the morning of November 8, 2021. He planned to head out to Riudoso to stay in a cabin for several days. His family later learned that Geoffrey visited the White Sands Missile Range that day. He arrived there that morning but exited and entered a few times. He needed to contact his insurance company for proof of insurance to obtain a visitor's pass. Geoffrey was issued a pass at noon. The man who interacted with Geoffrey at the visitor's center said he saw Geoffrey's Dodge Avenger at the bowling alley that afternoon. However, it was gone when he drove by again. A receipt showed Geoffrey purchased two beers at the bowling alley around 6:15 PM. Where had he been on base between those times? Later, his mom, Tracie, was told that Geoffrey exited the El Paso gate around 7:30 PM. Not quite an hour later, Geoffrey showed up at the Pit Stop, a gas station in Oro Grande, where he purchased a couple of beverages. Geoffrey left, heading north toward Ruidoso, but Geoffrey never made it to the cabin and was never seen or heard from again. Almost a month later, someone found Geoffrey's car back down south on the outskirts of El Paso, Texas. Still, extensive searches of the area have yet to reveal a trace of Geoffrey Spangler. Today, we will look deeper at what was found on Geoffrey's electronics, video footage, and more about his interactions at White Sands Missile Range. If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Geoffrey Spangler, please contact the Las Cruces Police Department at (575) 526-0795.If you have a missing loved one that you would like to have featured on the show, please fill out our case submission form.Follow The Vanished on social media at:FacebookInstagramTwitterPatreonSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
33-year-old Geoffrey Spangler disappeared from Las Cruces, New Mexico, on November 8, 2021. Geoffrey left home that morning and told his mother he was going to Ruidoso, roughly 2 hours away, to stay in a cabin he rented. Geoffrey's mom, Tracie, never heard from her son again, which was unusual. Tracie contacted the resort where Geoffrey was staying, and he did have a cabin reserved, but they informed her that he had never made it there. Tracie's calls and texts to her son's phone went unanswered. Tracie decided to report her son missing the following morning. As the investigation began, they uncovered a plethora of strange clues that Tracie has spent the last several years attempting to make sense of.If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Geoffrey Spangler, please contact the Las Cruces Police Department at (575) 526-0795.If you have a missing loved one that you would like to have featured on the show, please fill out our case submission form.Follow The Vanished on social media at:FacebookInstagramTwitterPatreonSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
