Why has Israel repeatedly disregarded and gone the opposite way from the White House's entreaties regarding the Middle East? And does the West fully fathom that Ukraine is losing its war of attrition with Russia? Walter Russell Mead, “Global View” columnist for the Wall Street Journal, joins Hoover senior fellows Niall Ferguson, John Cochrane, and H.R. McMaster to discuss the latest developments in those two combat theaters. Next, the fellows choose policies they feel have gone neglected in America's presidential election, weigh in on one pundit's assessment that the US is headed for “the greatest mental health crisis in the history of the country” should Donald Trump prevail, and reflect on the passing of Grateful Dead founding member Phil Lesh. Recorded on October 28, 2024.

Townhall Review - August 31, 2024 Hugh Hewitt and Wisconsin Congressman Derrick Van Orden, also a retired Navy SEAL, ponder why the Biden administration hasn't commended Israel for rescuing hostages from savages. John Solomon and Chris Miller, who was acting Secretary of Defense under President Trump, criticize the lack of accountability for the 13 American lives lost during the Afghanistan withdrawal, emphasizing the disconnect between official statements and reality. Miller warns that this deceit undermines military values and public trust. Hugh Hewitt and Jonathan Schanzer, of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, discuss how the Biden Administration has forbidden Israel from ensuring there are consequences to those who attack the State of Israel. Dennis Prager and George Gilder, author of "The Israel Test," talk about the update his book received after the October 7 attack on Israel. Gilder highlights how the United States, in many ways, is more dependent on Israel than Israel is on the United States. Hugh Hewitt invites Walter Russell Mead, author of “The Arc of a Covenant: The United States, Israel, and the Fate of the Jewish People,” to talk about the state of the American-Israeli connection today, and how Donald Trump was able to make breakthroughs in the Middle East, unlike any of his predecessors or President Biden.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The inimitable Walter Russell Mead, senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, stops by to enjoy what can only be described as an intellectual smorgasbord. Jonah and Walter evaluate the ongoing war in Israel, diving into the land-for-peace fallacy, questions about what constitutes nationhood and patriotism, and how to orient American foreign policy toward a more peaceful future. The duo then pivots to a more theological realm, discussing the apocalypse, how liberalism and Marxism mirror Abrahamic faiths, and the conflation between political conviction and moral intuition. Show Notes: —Mead's Special Providence: American Foreign Policy and How it Changed the World —Mead's The Arc of the Covenant: The United States, Israel, and the Fate of the Jewish People —How Team Biden can aid peace in Israel —Jonah's Soviet special —“The A(braham) Bomb” —Immanentize the what??
