Kids in school face bullying - we all know this. Dr. Wendy Craig and Dr. Deinera Exner-Cortens say that much of the bullying in school is connected to power imbalances in society writ large. They join Mind Full to talk about societal structures, bullying, and what parents and educators can do. Article in The Conversation by Dr. Craig, Dr. Exner-Cortens, and Dr. Liz Baker 'Too many kids face bullying rooted in social power imbalances — and educators can help prevent this': https://theconversation.com/too-many-kids-face-bullying-rooted-in-social-power-imbalances-and-educators-can-help-prevent-this-237613
STEVE HATCHER returns to some of those lesser-known sitcoms. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on October 6th 2024. Earlier in the year, STEVE HATCHER started taking us on a guided tour of some of the more forgotten TV sitcoms from the 1960s, and we thought it was about time that we went back and picked up where we left off in taking a look at the not insubstantial list of ancient television rib-ticklers that he's been studiously working his way through. So, over the course of the next hour, we'll touch briefly upon the ATV HANCOCK series that's apparently finally been given an airing on REWIND TV, before investigating STEVE'S list and talking about CITIZEN JAMES, the BBC series written for SID JAMES after the acrimonious split with HANCOCK; BEGGAR MY NEIGHBOUR, a mid-sixties class and workplace comedy initially starring PETER JONES, with JUNE WHITFIELD, REG VARNEY, and PAT COOMBS; SAM AND JANET a “married with children” set up which featured JOHN JUNKIN and VIVIENNE MARTIN; NOT IN FRONT OF THE CHILDREN, a terribly middle-class hit that launched WENDY CRAIG into playing similar roles for the next couple of decades; and MISTER DIGBY DARLING which again featured PETER JONES in a workplace sitcom alongside SHIELA HANCOCK (No relation). We also have a bit of a natter about a few other things that the topic of the sitcom happens to prompt, whilst I wonder about the fact that several of these scenarios seemed to turn up time and again with slight twists on the recognised formula. Incidentally, if afterwards you want to seek out our earlier discussion on almost forgotten sixties sitcoms, you can find that in the 188th episode of VISION ON SOUND if you are looking for it, which, like all of our previous episodes, can be found on spotify by typing VISION ON SOUND into the podcast search box. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

This week Cinphomaniac visits the 1963 under-appreciated masterpiece, The Servant - written by Harold Pinter, directed by Joseph Losey, and starring Dirk Bogarde in an absolutely iconic tour de force performance. Marcus and Dana breakdown the film's highly transgressive, for the time, explorations of class, sex, drugs, power, and Jungian Psychology. Being one of Marcus's Top Five Films Of All-Time, he probes the deepest levels of its endless re-watchability, while Dana lends the perspective of a first time viewer to the film's many shocking twists and unconventional structure. They also discuss Dirk Bogarde's incredible body of work, including a brief breakdown of two of his other, far ahead of their time, classics, Accident (1967) and Cast A Dark Shadow (1955), as well as The Servant's other brilliant lead and supporting performances from James Fox, Sarah Miles, and Wendy Craig. From the archive: April 7th, 2021

Butterflies was one of the surprise success stories of 1978 for BBC2. Tucked away on the minority channel, it wasn't really expected to do so well but within days of its first airing, it was recording great figures and rave reviews in the press. It helped to make household names of Wendy Craig, Geoffrey Palmer and Nicholas Lyndhurst. Written by legendary writer Carla Lane it told the story of Ria, a bored middle class 70s housewife desperate for some excitement in her life. In an interview recorded shortly before the sad death of Geoffrey Palmer, Wendy Craig recalls her Butterflies days to Ashley. The death of Geoffrey Palmer was announced today. Two of his leading co-stars, Dame Judi Dench and Wendy Craig, pay tribute. Ruth Wilson plays the sinister and ruthlessly ambitious Mrs Coulter in the BBC’s lavish adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials. We catch up with her as series two begins to discuss the relationship with her estranged daughter Lyra, working with a digital monkey, and to ask if baddies are just more fun to play. November marks the 25th anniversary of the Disability Discrimination Act, criminalising discrimination against disabled people in many areas of life. The anniversary is being marked on BBC TV and radio with a focus on the arts. For Radio 4, Jenny Sealey, of Graeae Theatre, and Polly Thomas have directed an adaptation of a Ben Johnson play - Bartholomew Fair - reimagined as The Bartholomew Abominations, set in a dystopian future. Two major pop acts have new releases out – longstanding international treasure Kylie Minogue and relative newcomers on the block, Little Mix. Katie Puckrik and Roisin O’Connor join John to discuss the merits (or otherwise?) of the albums and also to select a cultural highlight they’ve been enjoying recently Fifty years ago Ted Hughes published Crow: From the Life and Songs of the Crow. The Crow is a violent shape-shifter, a ruthless trickster who is determined to survive. A new edition of Crow has just been published and in Front Row Marina Warner, who has written the foreword, reveals the brutal beauty that Hughes achieved. The poet Zaffar Kunial reflects on how the rough music of the Songs of the Crow echoes across half a century to us today. We hear, too, from the archive, powerful readings of the poems by Ted Hughes himself. Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Sarah Johnson

The year is 1963 and Dirk Bogarde is a sinister man with a plan up his sleeve in The Servant. 'Recorded any new podcasts lately?' I get asked this a few times every week. The askees range from college attendees to retired adman. As I pick the people I interview, they seem as famous as The Beatles to me, but they're often unknown to the askees. After offering up a name and watching a blank expression appear, I reach for a quick handle, something from culture that I think they'll know. Occasionally it's an ad fact; 'Set Up Fallon before his name was lopped off' (Tom McElligott), but it's better if it's something that's escaped from the pages of Campaign and the various awards annuals and seeped into the culture. A good test is whether it would pique the interest of your parents. For example, mine wouldn't be fussed about who founded Fallon, but they might be interested in the bloke who 'Created those Smash Martians and Cresta Bear ads, yet wasn't John Webster' (Chris Wilkins), or the 'Typographer who used to be in a band with David Bowie' (Dave Wakefield) or maybe the guy who 'Shot all those Gary Lineker Walker's ads' (Paul Weiland). Should I bump into another askee before I post this, and they haven't heard the name Trevor Beattie, the problem wouldn't be trying to think of a cultural link they may know, it will be trying to figure out which one is most relevant to the person in front of me. I could create a very bespoke answer. Because Trevor seems to have had a disproportionate amount of brushes with popular culture. Here's a few that spring to mind: He went to school with UB40. Worked for the bloke who wrote the R-Whites 'Secret Lemonade Drinker'. Did those Weetabix 'Skinhead' ads. Got Bob Hoskins to do the voiceover. Hired by the guy who wrote Campari's 'No, Luton Airport'. Wrote those ads where people turn into Bertie Bassett. Created an Irish Tourist Board campaign featuring Wendy Craig and Billy Beaumont. Wrote 'Cats Like Felix Like Felix' in 1989 (it's still used). Discovered Holly Willoughby for Pretty Polly ad. Wrote ‘Hello Boys’. Shot with Hugh Hudson. Did that 'Cometh The Hour' David Beckham ad. Created that F.C.U.K. campaign. Owns the biggest Muhummad Ali collection in the world. Did a Unicef ad with Nelson Mandela. Persuaded Chris Cunningham to direct his first commercial. Shot an ad with David Lynch. Used John Shuttleworth for Yorkshire Tea ads. Rewrote Lionel Bart's ‘Food, Glorious Food’ for McCain’s ad. Pays for hundreds Veterans to go back to the beaches of Normandy to commemorate D-Day every year. Approved 'Double Life'. Invested in 'Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels'. Bought the original Abbey Road sign. Approved Peter Kay’s John Smith's campaign. Oversaw the marketing for Tony Blair and New Labour for three successful General Election campaigns. Created poster for that film 'Layer Cake'. Hired Zowie Bowie. Produced the cult film ‘Moon’. Made a documentary about Rudolph Nuryev. Produced a documentary about the history of the Spitfire. Producing a film about Brian Epstein. Trekked to the South Pole with Buzz Aldrin. Produced a documentary about Thalidomide (Attacking The Devil). With Harold Evans. Going to space in 2020. (At the time of writing he's desperately trying to make a film about Hilda Ogden.) We had a great chat, hope you enjoy it.
