"When the franchise wins, we win," says Mike Onslow, CTO of Clarity Voice, a communications provider celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Speaking with Technology Reseller News at the vCon conference, Onslow detailed how Clarity Voice is pioneering the use of vCon technology to radically improve call quality, agent training, and customer retention — at scale. Clarity Voice specializes in delivering communications solutions to the franchise and automotive dealership industries, built around a longstanding partnership with NetSapiens by Crexendo. Over the past few years, however, Clarity saw an opportunity to dramatically enhance business intelligence for small, medium, and micro businesses by integrating vCon architecture with their services. The Journey from Fragmented Data to Unified Insights Initially, Clarity developed a custom Call Coach platform — an internal AI tool to help evaluate support calls based on a quality checklist and company core values. "The problem was that the data was fragmented," Onslow explained. "We were pulling from multiple systems, APIs, and databases — it was inefficient and hard to scale." The solution came with the adoption of vCons — a standardized, lightweight format for capturing conversational data. "By simply changing the backend to vCons, without altering our platform or NetSapiens' core code, we unified everything," said Onslow. "It simplified our tech stack and allowed us to track every call, starting in early January." From One Call at a Time to Millions at Scale Armed with vCon-based data, Clarity Voice is now able to analyze millions of conversations across franchise networks — not just one call at a time. "The real value to our franchise brands is that we can surface the calls that need review, highlight the best-performing agents, and deliver actionable insights at scale," Onslow noted. One particularly powerful new feature is a churn signal detection system. Using vCon-based flags, Clarity can identify rare but critical cases where a customer signals they're ready to cancel — allowing the CX team to intervene in time. "One customer was going to churn for sure," recalled Onslow. "Our team called him back with empathy. After that conversation, he said, 'Sign me up for ten years.' That's the power of this technology." Tailored Solutions for Each Franchise Looking ahead, Clarity Voice is partnering with Crexendo to build customized vCon-based tools for each franchise brand. "Every brand cares about slightly different metrics," Onslow said. "vCons give us a standard format underneath, but the tools we build on top can be customized — without adding a ton of operational overhead." With a focus on empathy, simplicity, and smart automation, Clarity Voice is setting a powerful example for how the vCon revolution is reshaping communications. You can see how the rumblings around the future of Chris Hipkins as Labour Leader have started. They have added to their problems this week with the social media post from David Parker wittering on about his tax dream. The old Capital Gains Tax, get all those rich bastards lined up and raid their pockets. It's a sorry old state they find themselves in. The power crisis is a nadir of sorts. The cold hard reality of their policies has come home to roost for us and haunt them. You can argue the same around the economy, in general of course, and their Covid approach. Three recessions in two years. A record unmatched by anyone I can find is pretty damning for a government that spent six years basically wrecking the place. But the power is indisputable. We have no gas because we haven't looked for any because they closed it down. The lack of rain or wind isn't their fault, but the fragility of the system is. All the stuff they said would happen to close the gap hasn't. The Onslow idea went nowhere. And the simple, irrefutable truth is as a result of a lack of supply is the price is up, some people can't pay it, and people are out of work. It's a series of very clear simple dots that can be laid directly at their doorstep. It goes to credibility, they have none. And now we have tax. If Labour go to the next election with a package of new taxes, like capital gains, they may as well not campaign. They will have a two-fold problem. One, the recent memory of their performance in government is still fresh in voters' minds. Two, a new idea being we will tax you some more for good measure. They will, of course, be facing a government that has cut taxes and may well, if they are lucky, have an economy with some real steam driving it. If Hipkins makes it that far, his vision will seem so weird, so out of touch, and so ideologically mad he will not only lose, but quite possibly badly. You can't hide your past; you can hope people forget, and time helps that. But if more tax is their calling card for 2026, it's game over before it's even started. Now that we actually have things underway, this Government had a good week. Taking almost two months after voting to open things is ludicrous, the three weeks of counting that is now under investigation anyway given they cocked it up, the swearing in and speech from the throne on two separate days when it could have been done in one - but at least after all that they have promised a shortened summer break given all there is to do. The media, having not learned their lesson about being Labour Party apparatchiks, did their best to undo a Government that has barely started by banging on about ignoring Treasury advice over FPA's, despite yesterday's revelations about their beloved Labour Party making it a habit on things like uncosted infrastructure. They also tried their best on Māori bonuses and went to town over smoking. The smoking had some merit given that was, to many, a surprise out of the coalition deal. But the media, like a lot of the unions and lobby groups who have gnashed their teeth, seem to fail to grasp that a change of Government actually means things get done differently and the reason they are to be done differently is because we voted for it to be so. An uplifting aspect of the week, if not a small irony, was the Māori side of the National Party capped off by the comments of James Meager, who was surely the star of the show. In the heavily Māori ceremony of swearing in Tama Potaka spoke for National, reminding us that the stereotype of a white male grouping is not remotely realistic in 2023. That was followed by Meager, who gave a wonderful reminder that too much of the Māori political story in this country is portrayed in a light of misery, deprivation and handouts, when in fact Meager is most probably closer to reality, being young, bright, determined and successful. Getting rid of Onslow was easy and the light rail mess in Auckland will follow suit. In these early days a lot is easy, tangible and reminds us that help is on the way for the economy. But Mark Mitchell's letter, although creative, is not perhaps the outcome you were led to believe when the rhetoric was flying in Opposition. So, the lesson is that delivery is everything. You can promise all you like but the voters goodwill extends only to the point you pony up. But there is momentum. Chris Luxon looks fit to burst with energy, Nicola Willis lined us up for the bad news this Wednesday week, Erica Stanford spoke so well in response to the PISA shambles and Winston Peters called for a cease fire in the Middle East (he might want to apply that to himself in general). All in all, a week in for this country, I am hopeful. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

An energy researcher thinks the government's decision to scrap a pumped hydro scheme at Lake Onslow is presumptuous. Energy Minister Simeon Brown told me the choice to pull back government investment will open more opportunities for the market to invest renewable energy. But Otago University's Jen Purdie says it's a bad idea to stop the work. She says the government may as well finish costing and assessing the project - in case we need pumped hydro in future. Purdie spoke to Corin Dann.
The new government is stopping work on investigating pumped hydro energy storage at Lake Onslow in Otago. The project was floated as a solution to New Zealand's "dry year" problem - which happens about every seven years, when wind, solar and existing hydropower are insufficient to maintain electricity supply and we have to fill the gap with fossil fuels. The scheme would pump water from the nearby Clutha River into the lake then release it when other hydro-electric lakes became depleted. Government estimates say it would have cost New Zealanders $16 billion if it went ahead. Instead, the National-led government plans to cut red tape and encourage more investment in wind, solar and geothermal energy projects. Energy Minister Simeon Brown spoke to Corin Dann.

In a world, where increasingly the battle for renewables is being dented if not lost, how wise is it to find a solar farm idea near Lake Tekapo has been rejected because of the environment? You want to 'save the environment' but you can't because of the environment? As Rishi Sunak opens more oil fields because renewables can't cover the gaps, as EV manufacturers pull back investment because demand falls, as many countries don't know what to do about the increased power demand if more people do buy EVs, as the Australians increasingly worry about what they will actually do about power production, given they don't have hydro like we do and as we still haven't answered whether we want to spend $16 billion-plus on Onslow as a bucket for dry years, it seems increasingly pointless coming up with ideas that may work at scale and yet they are turned down to protect the very thing we are trying to protect. The Tekapo idea was an 88-megawatt plan over 113 hectares. It would have serviced about 13,000 homes. Now, it may be this project specifically was a bridge too far and in general, it could have worked, but so much of this is open to interpretation and dare we suggest an astonishingly large amount of nimbyism. The problem, according to Environment Canterbury, was the risk of "permanent and irreversible loss of threatened land environments". What does that actually mean? It would also "potentially impact indigenous flora and fauna". Potentially? Well, would it or would it not have? Isn't there "potentially" indigenous flora and fauna everywhere you go in this country? Just what bit of New Zealand are we looking for? The toxic waste dump where nothing has grown for 1,000 years? The renewables game is fraught. On one hand, you have the Government looking at Onslow, a project so big it scares off investors in other ideas, and when investors do have other ideas the authorities look for reasons not to do it. We don't like nuclear. Solar, at scale, needs to avoid mountain, daisies and snails apparently. Wind is a partial solution but is far from the sole answer. And we are a mile behind in offshore wave generation. So shall we stick with Indonesian coal? We either want to sort this or we want to find excuses. How many times do the folks behind the Tekapo solar project and ideas like it, need to be rejected before they say "why would we bother?" See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The $15 billion Lake Onslow battery project appears to be dead in the water, with the election of a new National-led government. Labour has so far bankrolled the 'investigations phase' of the pumped hydro scheme, but National is promising to stop in its first 100 days in office. Questions remain, however, about New Zealand's 'dry year problem' ahead of what's forecast to be hot, dry summer. Political reporter Anneke Smith has more.

More money is likely to go down the drain as the Government ploughs ahead with the next stage of Otago's Lake Onslow project. It's confirmed it will develop a detailed business case for the hydro storage set-up, despite the estimated cost of the project leaping to 16-billion dollars - a huge jump from the initial four-billion. Manawa Energy Chairman Paul Ridley Smith says that there are so many smarter ways to decarbonise. He says about 20 geothermal power plants could be built for 16-billion dollars and completely solve the problem. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Welcome to the weekend! This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Saturday, November 19 and Sunday, November 20.This may be the first forecast in awhile where they've brought out the word blustery. According to the National Weather Service, there will be a slight chance for flurries Saturday morning, but besides that it will be sunny most of the day. But it will also be cold, with a high of 22 degrees dropping down to a windchill of 0 degrees with blustery 15 to 25 winds. On Saturday night it will be mostly clear, with the winds calming a bit, and a low of 10 degrees. On Sunday the temperatures will get up to 35 degrees, again with sunny skies, and again with wind that will probably make it feel a lot colder. On Sunday night it will be mostly clear, with a low of around 26 degrees.Iowa will still have one statewide Democrat in office after Republican state auditor candidate Todd Halbur conceded the race Friday to Democratic incumbent Auditor Rob Sand.Halbur said he was dropping his request for a recount because he did not have sufficient resources to file the requests in all 99 counties, and he claimed the Republican Party of Iowa would not help support a statewide recount.Sand led the race by 2,893 votes out of nearly 1.2 million cast in the election — a margin of just 0.24 percent — according to the latest unofficial results reported by the Iowa Secretary of State's office.Because the victory margin is less than 1 percent, Halbur by state law could request a recount without being required to post a bond, with Iowa counties picking up the cost.Halbur, though, would still have to physically file paperwork with each county auditor in the state within three days after the county canvass and recruit designees in all 99 counties to serve on recount boards.“They have to have the flexibility to do a hand count for days and be flexible for 18 total days to get the recount done,” Halbur said in a statement provided to The Gazette. “My campaign does not have the staff or infrastructure to get that coordinated on a statewide basis in that short amount of time.In less than three days this week, seven people — five of them children — have died in Iowa house fires, a fatality rate not seen in the state in at least 16 years, data shows.Four children died Wednesday in a fire in Mason City. A retired couple died Thursday in a fire in northeast Cedar Rapids. And a fire early Friday in Onslow claimed another child. The Mason City fire was blamed on a faulty power strip. The cause of the Cedar Rapids and Onslow fires remained under investigation, though officials believe the Onslow fire started in the kitchen.Structure fires do tend to pick up this time of year, said Ron Humphrey, the special agent in charge for the Iowa Fire Marshal's Office, because as the temperature drops, people start using different kinds of heat-generating appliances that can sometimes become fire hazards — like space heaters, furnaces and fireplaces.“I can't say that that's any of the causes for these recent fires, but fires in general this time of year, we seem to get more because … people are starting to turn on their furnaces,” Humphrey said.Data compiled by the State Fire Marshal's Office dating to 2006 shows there has never been such a high fire fatality rate in such a short period of time in those 16 years. In December 2017 — four days before Christmas — two fires on the same day claimed six people, including a family of five in...

The Friday Newsletter | Daily Gardener Community Friends of the Garden Meeting in Athens Georgia Register Here Historical Events 1606 Birth of Edmund Waller (books about this person), English poet, and politician who was one of the longest-serving members in the English House of Commons. Edmund is remembered for his carpe diem or "seize the day" poem, Go, Lovely Rose (1645), in which the rose must relay an urgent message: that time is short, that she is beautiful and that he loves her. Go, lovely rose! Tell her that wastes her time and me, That now she knows, When I resemble her to thee, How sweet and fair she seems to be. 1616 Birth Mathias de l'Obel ("ma-TEE-us dew Lew-bell"), Flemish physician and botanist. Mathias practiced medicine in England, and he was the first botanist to recognize the difference between monocots and dicots. Today we remember Mathias de l'Obel ("LEW-bell") with the Lobelia plant. Before researching Mathias, I pronounced obelia as "LOW- beel- ya." But now, knowing the French pronunciation of his name, I will say it "LEW-beel-ya." It's a subtle little change (LOW vs. LEW), but after all, the plant is named in Mathias's honor. Now, for as lovely as the Lobelia is, the common names for Lobelia are terribly unattractive. They include names like Asthma Weed, Bladderpod, Gagroot, Pukeweed, etc. Vomit Wort, and Wild Tobacco. These common names for Lobelia reflect that Lobelia is very toxic to eat. Despite its toxicity, Lobelia is one of the sweetest-looking plants for your summer containers. This dainty annual comes in pink, light blue, and royal blue. Personally, every year, I buy two flats of light blue Lobelias. But no matter the color you choose, lobelias are a favorite of pollinators. The delicate blossoms frequently host bees, butterflies, and moths, which only adds to their charm. 1880 Birth Muriel Wheldale Onslow (books by this author), English biochemist. She researched flower color inheritance and pigment molecule biochemistry. Muriel married a fellow biochemist named Victor Onslow. Victor was actually the son of royalty - his dad was the fourth Earl of Onslow. When Victor was a student at Cambridge, he was paralyzed from the waist down after diving off a cliff into a lake. Victor's physical limitations did not stop Muriel from loving him. Even though they were married for only a little over three years before Victor's untimely death, Victor and Muriel's love story was one of mutual admiration and respect. When Muriel recorded her memoir of Victor, she wrote that he was a man of amazing courage and mental vitality; and that he was an inspiration to their peers in biochemistry. Muriel worked with snapdragons, which come in a range of flower colors including green, red, orange, yellow, white, purple, and pink - and now even bicolor and speckled. The snapdragon was the perfect subject for Murial's work. Muriel's coloration research resulted in four major papers on snapdragon color inheritance and worldwide recognition. In 2010, the Royal Institution in England sponsored a play about four female biochemists - including Muriel Onslow. The play was called Blooming Snapdragons. Snapdragons or Antirrhinum majus ("ant-er-EYE-num MAY-jus") are beloved cottage garden flowers. They are a cousin to the foxglove. Snapdragons are happiest when planted early, in cool weather. They will bloom their hearts out all summer long. Then, if you cut them back in August, you will get a second flush of color in the fall. 1899 Birth of Yury Karlovich Olesha (books by this author), Russian and Soviet novelist. He was part of the Odessa School of Writers and is considered one of the greatest Russian novelists of the 20th century. Here's an excerpt from his book, Envy (1927): “Once he raised his arm to show his friends the back of his hand, where the veins were laid out in the shape of a tree, and he broke out in the following improvisation: “Here,” he said, “is the tree of life. Here is a tree that tells me more about life and death than the flowering and fading of tree gardens. I don't remember when exactly I discovered that my wrist was blooming like a tree…but it must have been during that wonderful time when the flowering and fading of trees still spoke to me not of life and death but of the end and beginning of the school year! It was blue then, this tree, blue and slender, ...and turned my metacarpus's entire landscape into a Japanese watercolor… “The years passed, I changed, and the tree changed, too. “I remember a splendid time; the tree was spreading. The pride I felt, seeing its inexorable flowering! It became gnarled and reddish-brown—and therein lay its strength! ...But now, my friends! How decrepit it is, how rotten! “The branches seem to be breaking off, cavities have appeared… It's sclerosis, my friends! And the fact that the skin is getting glassy, and the tissue beneath it is squishy — isn't this a fog settling on the tree of my life, the fog that will soon envelop all of me?” Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Terrain by Greg Lehmkuhl This book came out in 2018, and the subtitle is Ideas and Inspiration for Decorating the Home and Garden. Botanic Spark 1878 Birth of Edward Thomas (books by this author), British Poet. Edward's mentor was Robert Frost, and a trip to see Frost inspired his most famous poem, October. Like Henry David Thoreau, Edward loved simplicity in his work and life. There are two verses I wanted to share with you today. The first is from his poem Cherry Trees. The cherry trees bend over and are shedding On the old road where all that passed are dead, Their petals, strewing the grass as for a wedding This early May morn when there is none to wed. The second is an excerpt from his poem, The Manor Farm (1878) Over the land freckled with snow half-thawed The speculating rooks at their nests cawed And saw from elm tops, delicate as flowers of grass, What we below could not see, Winter pass. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.
