Yorkshire Tea is a well-loved social-first brand leading its category in market share – hard to believe when you consider it was once the underdog amongst its multinational competitors. So how did the brand flip the script? By leaning into what made them different: their Northern-ness. In this episode, Dom Dwight, strategy and innovation director at Taylor's of Harrogate, breaks down Yorkshire Tea's approach to social and brand building. Expect insights on the power of consistency, how social went from a novelty to a central part of the brand's media planning, and how Yorkshire Tea is trying to get more Gen Zers popping the kettle on.

It's been the kind of week where everything has been happening. And somehow the Steves are going to try and fit it into one show. In quickfire news, we've got Big Tech and fast food. There's also PayPal, which is neither and has been seeing slowing revenue growth for the last few years. Steve D has the latest news from Meta and Four Corners Property Trust. And Steve W has been looking at Microsoft and McDonald's – who are the winners and who are the losers? The Budget caused some interesting waves in the UK stock market. Entain shares soared as the chancellor held off increasing taxes on betting companies, but not everyone was so lucky. Raising £40bn in taxes was always going to be a challenge. But what does Steve D think will happen next and who does Steve W think came off worst from the announcement? Amazon is a stock that both Steves own and the latest earnings report is promising. Revenue growth of 11% masks bigger profitability gains as advertising and AWS came in strong. The stock climbed after the news, but it's worth investors keeping a close eye on the free cash flow metrics. They're impressive, but are they everything that they seem? Apple shares fell after the Q3 earnings report – but not by much. Steve W has been looking at this one and thinks it was relatively encouraging, with strong growth in the services division. Sales in China are still struggling and a $10bn tax bill is hardly insignificant. But is the return to growth for iPhone sales a sign that things will be positive in the final quarter of 2024? Google's parent company Alphabet has been trailing the rest of the Magnificent Seven – from a share price perspective at least. But the stock moved higher after this week's earnings. It's easy to see why as well. Strong growth in the cloud was accompanied by an impressive valuation metric for Waymo, but what caught Steve D's eye? All of the big oil companies reported earnings this week, but the one that stands out from a valuation perspective is BP. And profits hit their lowest levels since 2024. A 6% dividend, combined with a new focus on core competencies appeals to Steve W. But is it enough to get the stock onto his buying list? If you pitched the story we discuss in this episode as a fictional film script you'd be laughed out of the room … so shocking, so unlikely is this tale of crisis. In 2005 Steve Gallant was convicted of the brutal revenge murder of a man he claimed had attacked his then girlfriend. After being sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum 17-year term, Steve made a vow to never again use violence. He kept that vow for 14 and a half years until, on November 29th 2019, he was allowed out on day release for the first time to attend an educational event at Fishmonger's Hall near London Bridge. On that day Usman Khan, a former prisoner, unleashed terror – killing two young graduates Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones. Steve, along with two others, confronted Khan, who was wearing what turned out to be a fake suicide vest, and chased him out of the building, bizarrely using huge Narwhal tusks and a fire extinguisher. With no concern for their own safety, they took him down before armed police then ended his life. The reaction to Steve's incredible bravery was mixed. For some, including then PM Boris Johnson, he was lauded as a hero. But for others it raised questions about his rehabilitation … about whether his reactions on that day demonstrated a continued willingness to use violence.Steve was eventually awarded the Queen's Medal for Gallantry and granted a Royal Prerogative of Mercy, reducing his minimum term by 10 months. He details his time in prison, essentially a story of change in the face of daily crisis, in his compelling new book The Road To London Bridge. And in this conversation we explore his journey – from a difficult and violent childhood, through the shame of his appalling crime, his determination to change as he navigated his way through the prison system, to that day of truly astounding, instinctive bravery. This is a crisis conversation unlike any we have had. My thanks to Steve for joining us.Steve's Crisis Comforts 1. Perspective – Knowing what you have and understanding there is always someone worse off than you.2. Cup of tea – I love Yorkshire tea bags. You can't beat it. Yorkshire Tea was a lifesaver in prison.3. Are you a tea drinker? If so, you're not alone. Every day around the world millions of cups of this popular brew are drunk, and it's been that way for thousands of years. The oldest discovered tea is from the Han Dynasty, dating from 206BC to 220AD. But it's thought that the tea trend really took off during the Tang Dynasty in the 8th Century, when it became China's national drink. Now, Turkey, the Republic of Ireland and the UK are believed to be the biggest tea-drinking nations, per capita. Tea is consumed in many ways – slurped, sipped or glugged. It can be poured from pots, infused or brewed in the cup using tea bags – and it's this latter process that is causing concern. Research last year found some premium tea bags might be leaving billions of microscopic plastic particles in the cup. Scientists from McGill University in Montreal found that some ‘plastic' tea bags shed high levels of microplastics into water. However, The World Health Organization says such particles in drinking water do not appear to pose a risk. Most tea bags are made from paper, with a small amount of plastic used to seal them shut – made from oil. America learned so many of its terrible traits from England. One of them was the concept of: call a bunch of women witches and see what happens (nothing good). We had Salem. But 80 years earlier, England had Lancashire. So sit back with some Yorkshire Tea and drink up the story of religion, politics and a bunch of hateful idiots!
Back in the swing of things and Series 3 is coming at you with all sorts of topical issues. This week, Amber & Annabel are discussing the Women's Health Strategy that's currently being discussed, and the 'Menstrual Leave' proposal that's currently undergoing talks in Spain, making it potentially the first European country to grant such leave to its workers. Is it a good idea? Are they being far too generous, and should the focus be on actually supporting women's health rather than just giving time off work? The girls talk it out. In this week's 'Am I Ovary Acting?', the girls discuss a whole array of ovary actions and Annabel is shocked that Amber pays for her own tea. A Yorkshire Tea thief, a croc debate, it's pet peeves are go in series 3! Andy Nairn is one of the world's most respected brand strategists, and the co-founder of one of the UK's most successful creative agencies: Lucky Generals. Named after Napoleon's famous quote "I would rather have a general who was lucky than one who was good", the agency has more than lived up to its name, securing work with Amazon, Virgin Atlantic, Yorkshire Tea and many more. Lucky Generals has been shortlisted for Campaign magazine's Agency of the Year for the last five years in a row, and Andy has been recognized as one of the top five creative people in world advertising by Business Insider. A podcast to answer all your questions about productivity, time management, self-development and goal planning. My name is Carl Pullein and I am your host for this show. We've covered prioritising before in this podcast and it is an important part of being more productive and ensuring that what you are working on is meaningful and moves the right things forward. However, for those of you who have created a good solid system, you are likely struggling with deciding what to work on. If you are collecting a lot of inputs—tasks, events and ideas—at some point you will have to make a decision about what to do about those collected inputs and, more importantly, when you will do something about them. And those decisions can be very difficult. So, that is what we will be exploring in this week's podcast. Don't forget, if you want to receive all the content I produce each week in one convenient place, then subscribe to my weekly newsletter. Not only do you get a summary and link to my weekly blog post, YouTube videos and this podcast, you also get a free productivity or goal-setting lesson each week. And best of all… This newsletter is completely free. All you need do is click the link in the show notes enter your details and you're in. Doesn't get any simpler than that. Okay, on with the show and that means it's time to hand you over to the Mystery Podcast Voice for this week's question: This week's question comes from Shelly. Shelly asks: Hi Carl, thank you for all the work you produce each week, I have a question about choosing which tasks to work on. I usually begin the day with around thirty tasks in my to-do list and I never complete them all. I feel guilty about rescheduling a lot of tasks. How do you choose which tasks to work on each day? Hi Shelly, thank you for your question. This is a great question because it touches on a hidden aspect of productivity and time management. All productivity and time management systems focus on collecting and organising stuff. Writing everything down and then organising it in a way that means something to us. What often gets forgotten is finding the time to complete these tasks we collect. And, more importantly, deciding which is important and which is not. How do you do that? Well, time sensitivity is one way. Due dates and deadlines are great motivators for getting things done. If you have a deadline for something, you are going to be more likely to complete it. This becomes even more important if the deadline was given to your by your boss or someone in authority over you. Your life would be easier if you spent a little time each week doing your taxes—organising your receipts and income and expenditure—rather than leaving a year's worth until a few weeks (or days) before the tax assessment deadline. But, hey, when I don't have to submit my tax information for ten months, why would I spend an hour every weekend pulling together everything I spent and earned this week? There's no imminent deadline, so there's no urgency and therefore it's not a priority. So we leave it until a week or two before it's due and now it's not an hour, we are talking days if not a whole week doing work on submitting taxes. If you want to stop the tyranny of tax assessment time, then do a little each week (or month) to keep it organised. It's not about making it a priority, it's about making it something you do regularly. A bigger problem you will be facing each day Shelly, is a phenomenon called “over-choice”. Basically, what this means is when we are faced with a lot of options to choose from, we find it very difficult to decide. We become overwhelmed and anxious about whether we are making the right decision or not. If you were to wake up tomorrow morning and have one item to do. You would do it. No matter how big or difficult the task was. You would do it. First of all you would be focused and secondly, there's no decision to make. You are doing that one thing. So you get on and do it. But we don't do that do we? We see how easy it is to add things to our task managers and then, so we don't forget something, we add a random date to a task that roughly equates to when we think it needs doing. Unfortunately, this strategy leads to tasks coming up on our daily lists that don't actually need to be done that day but clutter up your today's task list. When you look at that list in the morning, you have far too many decisions to make. We try and rationalise that by looking for the urgent tasks—but you often find even that filtering approach leads to too many tasks to complete in one day. We think everything is urgent and the problem there is if everything is urgent which one do you work on first? What we end up with is a list that gives us too much choice and then we face the paradox of choice—as Barry Schwartz wrote about in his book by the same name. You make have heard of the studies into choice. When we have a limited number of choices of a particular product we are much more likely to buy one than if we are faced with too many choices. I believe the statistics were when faced with a limited choice 80% bought. When faced with a lot of choices, only 3% chose something. This is the same for your daily task list. Too many items on that list and you will waste so much time trying to pick something. More often than not you won't and will stop looking at your to-do list and instead do whatever someone else tells you to do. It's easier and you delegate choosing to someone else. It's why we procrastinate. We have far too much choice. So, if you want your to-do list to become more effective; you must reduce your list of tasks for the day. How do you do that? Well, first look at how you are writing your tasks. Make sure it is very clear what you need to do. I see people writing things like “Paul 353 2458 3579” and expect to know instantly what that task means. It looks like the name Paul and a telephone number. So you may deduce you need to call Paul. But why do you need to call him? You'd be far better-writing something like: “Call Paul about expected shipment date for Yorkshire Tea”. As soon as you read that you instantly know what you need to do. The key to writing your tasks is to make sure there is an action verb in the sentence. If you make it very clear what needs to be done with a task you reduce the number of decisions you need to make. And that is really the secret here. Reduce the decisions you need to make. And this can be done in another way. Let's take email. We all get it, some more than others. If you are not staying on top of your email daily, it builds up to a point where you become swamped and overwhelmed. There are two parts to managing email. Processing; where you decide what, if anything, needs to be done with an email. And doing email—where you respond or act on the email you have decided needs action from you. Now if you are randomly looking at your email throughout the day, you lose focus on what you were working on. You get dragged away from what you decided to do that day and can quite easily spend a lot of time just responding to email. If you set aside some time each day for processing—say thirty minutes before lunch or first thing in the morning and then a set amount of time each for responding to your actionable email, you reduce the decisions you need to make. If, for example, you set 4pm to 4;45pm for responding to your actionable email each day, you now no longer have to decide when you will respond. You know you have time for that later in the afternoon. All you need to decide, when an email comes in, is whether or not you need to action it. You've simplified your decision making. With this method, you no longer need to be sending emails to your task manager. All you need now is a single time block in your calendar that tells you when it's time to clear your actionable email. What about all those follow-ups and calls you need to make? I find these are often the cause of a lot of clutter in a task manager and are likely to be the tasks that get put off again and again. Rather than randomly adding these to a task manager, you could group them together as subtasks in a recurring task that tells you to do your calls. Or, if you are in sales and need to follow up with clients regularly to see if they need something, you could put them on a spreadsheet. That way you can record information like when you last called them and any information that would be useful when you do call them. All you need do then is have a single task telling you to review your calls list. This is the reason why I stress the importance of knowing what your core work is. This is the work you are paid to do, not the voluntary work you have committed yourself to by using the word “yes” too often. Once you know what your core work is, you can make sure you block time out on your calendar for doing that core work. Again, once you have done this there's no decision to make. You look at your calendar and you see what you must do. The decision is already made. I write a blog post each week. It's part of my core work. I have set aside Monday morning, once my early morning calls are complete for writing. It's non-negotiable. It's what I do. So now, I don't have to try and decide when I will write the blog post. I know I will be writing the blog post on Monday morning. The only decision I need to make now is what will I write about? I've reduced my decisions by 50%. The key to building more manageable to-do lists, Shelly, is in reducing your choices. The less you have to choose from, the easier that choice will be to make. This can be achieved by making sure you are very clear about what you want to get accomplished each day and the best time to do this is the evening before. When you give yourself ten to fifteen minutes before you end the day to make decisions about what you will work on the next day, you no longer have to waste time picking a task. You wake up with a clear set of objectives for the day and you can get started. The strange thing is once you start to see that most of our productivity problems are caused by the decisions we have to make each day you start to find ways of reducing those decisions. I am a bit extreme here. A couple of years ago I decided I hated having to think about what to wear on my videos each time. So I decided I would wear a navy blue t-shirt. Since I made that decision I have accumulated about twelve navy blue T-shirts. I have six long-sleeve for the winter and six short-sleeved ones for when the temperature gets warmer. I've also been eating the same thing for breakfast and dinner each day for around eight years. This means I don't have to worry about calories because I eat roughly the same amount of calories each day and I don't have to decide what to eat. I already know that when I have breakfast today I will have Greek yoghurt with blueberries and mixed nuts. For dinner, I will have chicken salad and a bowl of fruit to finish. Now, I don't expect people to follow my lead here. I am not a foodie. So eating the same thing eat day doesn't worry me. I don't get bored. And I do have a free day every Saturday where I can eat anything I want. And as for my clothes, I rarely meet people in person these days—certainly not since the pandemic began—so wearing the same kind of clothes each day isn't an issue for me. Finally, I would recommend you build as much structure into your day as possible. Doing the same kind of things at set times each day and week isn't boring. It prevents procrastination. It reduced the number of decisions you need to make and it keeps your task manager clean and tight. You will find you no longer have to reschedule as many tasks are you are doing now and with consistency, life will become so much easier and less overwhelming. I hope that has helped, Shelly. Thank you for your question. And thank you to you too for listening. It just remains for me now to wish you all a very very productive week.

Former England cricketer Gary Ballance has admitted using a racial slur against Azeem Rafiq, a former teammate at Yorkshire. The cricket club recently concluded that no employees would face any action over Rafiq's claims of institutional racism, leading to major sponsors this week abandoning deals over the handling of the case. Ballance accepted he was responsible for some of the offensive and derogatory terms that Rafiq revealed he was subjected to during his time playing for the county in northern England. Ballance attempted to offer some context of his “incredibly close relationship” with Rafiq during their time together at the club, claiming both men “said things privately to each other which were not acceptable” but adding that regretted his part of those exchanges. “It has been reported that I used a racial slur and, as I told the independent enquiry, I accept that I did so and I regret doing so,” Ballance said in a statement on Wednesday. “To be clear — I deeply regret some of the language I used in my younger years. I do not wish to discredit Rafa by repeating the words and statements that he made about me and others but I have to be clear that this was a situation where best friends said offensive things to each other which, outside of that context, would be considered wholly inappropriate." Azeem Rafiq, a former England under-19 captain, said in interviews last year that as a Muslim he was made to feel like an “outsider” during his time at Yorkshire from 2008-18 and that he was close to taking his own life. Ballance's name was redacted in a summary of the independent report into Rafiq's wide-ranging claims of institutional racism, but ESPNCricinfo.com reported that the panel upheld claims he had repeatedly used a racist slur. The investigation panel determined that those words were delivered “in the spirit of friendly banter” — a conclusion that has caused a wave of condemnation from politicians and campaign groups. “I regret that these exchanges took place but at no time did I believe or understand that it had caused Rafa distress," Ballance said. "If I had believed that then I would have stopped immediately. He was my best mate in cricket and I cared deeply for him. To my knowledge, it has never been alleged that I reduced Rafa to tears.” Emerald Group Publishing, which held naming rights to Headingley Stadium, and Yorkshire Tea have followed shirt sponsors Anchor Butter in ending their association with Yorkshire County Cricket Club. “We do not tolerate any form of racism or discriminatory behaviour and the damaging effects this has," Emerald said in a statement. "We hope that YCCC will listen and respond with serious action to eradicate racism from the club and uphold the values we all expect.” The England and Wales Cricket Board has promised a “full regulatory process that is fair to all parties” after only last week receiving a full copy of the report. “We are conscious about the length of time that Azeem has waited for resolution and the toll that must be taking on his well-being and that of his family," the ECB said. "We are sorry that, as a sport, this has not yet been resolved." By - Associated Press

Habakkuk's lament meets a surprising answer todayIn this episode, with expected cup of tea and biscuit in hand, we hear God speak of the surprising way in which He will begin to bring justice upon the scene that Habakkuk has previously been lamenting. The surprise is that He is going to use the Babylonians to bring destruction upon God's people. ‘I am doing a work in your days', He says, and that work is to bring the fearsome, terrifying power of the Babylonian nation to bear on His people. We're given a colourful picture of the horrific, destructive habits of the nation and ultimately see that ‘their own might is their god'. They have no concept of the mighty, sovereign God that Habakkuk is in dialogue with.As the book unfolds, we will consider more what it is to read Habakkuk this side of the cross. But before we do that, we want to make sure we sit with the original hearers and readers and grasp their situation. There's no doubt that they would have been horrified at the thought of God using the terrible Babylonians to sort out the mess of injustice before them.Sometimes we can feel the same in that God's means of working out His plan don't seem to make sense, or even worse, seem to be bringing more pain. As our thoughts move with Habakkuk's towards further questions in the next verses, we are reminded that God is in control and we are to listen and wait on His word and action, trusting Him with the bigger picture even when the immediate feels confusing.Helpful ResourcesBoth Sarah and Felicity talk about how and when they first started reading the Bible for themselves. Tea, biscuits and some big questions from Habakkuk today. It seems that the prophet is witnessing violence, corruption and wickedness all around him. The mention of the ‘law' being ‘paralysed' makes it clear that this ‘iniquity' is not just in the surrounding nations but even amongst God's people. He sees the righteous being surrounded by the wicked, and he is deeply troubled. Habakkuk, therefore, asks God:Why are you not listening? Why are you not saving or doing anything? Why do you not see what is going on?Underneath all of these questions is Habakkuk's concern that justice is not being done, and is even being perverted. He wants right and good judgement to fall on what he sees before him. We want to be careful when we draw the lines between this book and us. It was written for a particular audience back then, and we are sitting here right now. But, while being careful, we can begin to see some similarities between our context and Habakkuk's context. We are this side of the cross, but we are living in a similarly broken world where injustice is on display. We are also speaking to the same God as Habakkuk. As we read Habakkuk's heartfelt prayer, are our hearts in this place? Are we lamenting like Habakkuk? Do we really pray like this? Big challenges to our hearts as we see and hear Habakkuk's heart posture. Helpful Resources and TipsWe talked about how we begin to get into a bible book, and both of us talked about reading repeatedly and slowly through the whole book. Sarah is big on having colours and highlighters to hand while she reads; Felicity has a simple pencil, and then a piece of paper on which to jot any questions that arise as she's reading it through. Have a look at our instagram/facebook to see the differences in approach!Tea and Biscuit Chat FootnotesFelicity was drinking Earl Grey tea, Sarah was having a cup of hot water. Felicity's favourite tea is actually a mixture of Earl Grey and Yorkshire Tea - she calls it Yorkshire Grey. Sarah was broaching a small-ish (3cm) chocolate chip cookie, while Felicity was enjoying a petit beurre chocolate-covered biscuit In Other News…Connect with us on Facebook or InstagramSarah blogs here: https://sarahdargue.orgFelicity blogs here: https://boysbooksandthehomeofthebrave.blog/ Email us: podcastingsisters@gmail.comSponsorship DetailsThis podcast is sponsored by 10ofthose.com. 10ofthose.com hand pick the best Christian books that point to Jesus and sell them at discounted prices. Whether you're parenting small children, commuting to work or heading out for a run, join us for our Bible based podcast as two sisters do a 20 minute bible study, on the go, going through a book of the Bible week by week. This first episode of Word Fuelled Hearts was all about introductions - both of the hosts, Sarah and Felicity, and the book of Habakkuk. Cup of tea in hand, and biscuit (the one more like a cookie than a scone) at the ready, conversation turns to the purpose of Word Fuelled Hearts, and why we've chosen to record our conversations. It is the conviction that God works through His word, by His Spirit, that gives us the reason to open up the Bible. And it is, therefore, the fact that God is at work as we read, discuss and apply His word together. We love doing it in an everyday, easy and accessible way and would love for our conversations to help others feel able to dig into the Bible with others and see God at work. Habakkuk took centre stage for the rest of the episode as we got our bearings in Bible history, considered the prophet's context and dwelt on verses that have impacted our hearts so far.Helpful Resources and TipsWe love The Bible Project and the way they give brilliant illustrated overviews of different books of the Bible. The Habakkuk one can be found here and is a really good introduction to the structure of the book and it's context. We mentioned that we both use journaling bibles as we dig into a book of the bible. This is like the one that Sarah uses. The one that Felicity uses is here, and here if you're in the USA. Sadly the NIV one is only available in the UK. Felicity talked about using a study bible to help with understanding the context to books, and for other information. She likes this one which is available in the UK and USA. Naming no names, which host of a well-known legal podcast was recently seen disappearing through a suspicious-looking black door in London's seedy Soho? We'd hate to start scurrilous rumours, but our secret sources tell us that this natty dressing, spec wearing, Yorkshire Tea drinker was heard discussing all manner of smut, celebrity gossip, the Leveson Inquiry, super-injunctions, defamation, copyright and scandal – with weekly digital icon of rumour, humour and innuendo, Popbitch. Luckily we've obtained a recording of what happened. Popbitch's Chris Lochery and Duncan Lamont, from Charles Russell Speechlys, talk candidly about what it's like to walk the legal tightrope. Let's keep it between ourselves who the other person is though, ok? Find out more at tr.com/TheHearing
