When something bad happens, we want to know why…the weirder and badder the event, the more we need to know… It can't possibly be random…someone needs to be responsible and held accountable…someone needs to be blamed…and there had better not be any loose ends… Certain segments of the population have always been suspicious of the official story…forget the simplest of most logical explanation…these awful events or phenomenon's are the work of some kind of secret cabal or organization pulling the strings of life on earth…it was a conspiracy… For example, the most famous murder of modern times was the assassination of JFK on November 22, 1963…more than sixty years later, it seems like no one believes that lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunman… To be fair, they might be right…there's been a lot of investigation into the JFK case over the decades…i'm one of those nuts who reads, watches, and listens to everything involved with the assassination…and I gotta tell you that i'm convinced this was the result of a loose need-to-know operation involving the CIA, the deep stage, Cuban exiles, and American mobsters… There's also something called “Occam's razor” which dates back to the 14th century…this Monk—William of Occam—was annoyed at how people blamed supernatural forces when even the simplest thing went wrong…his answer to that was “look, the simplest and most obvious explanation is usually the correct one”… But try that approach with people who believe the earth is flat and that we never went to the moon…Covid-19 was engineered by the media…and the Illuminati live beneath the Denver airport… The world of conspiracy theories is a bottomless pit of weirdness…and when it comes to music, one of the deepest and strangest of these theories has to do with what happened above a greenhouse in Seattle on April 5, 1994… Boy, have I got stories—multiple stories, in fact—about this one…in fact, it might be the most compressive study you've ever heard on the subject…this is uncharted: music and mayhem in the music industry, episode 12: it's the ever-popular Kurt-Cobain-was-murdered theory… Learn more about your ad choices. There have been many studies into the different types of music fans…basically, they can be broken down into four types… At the bottom of the pyramid are people who aren't fans at all…they don't like you or don't care about you…they may not even know who you are…so for the purposes of this discussion, they don't matter… The next level is casual fans…they sort of like you or your music, but they can take or leave what you're selling…they have zero investment in your career… Going up another level, we have true fans…they love you enough that they'll spend money on you…they'll stream your music faithfully, buy physical product like CD's or vinyl from time to time, probably own a t-shirt or two, and will go to your shows and have a very good time… At the very top are the superfans…superfans love, love, love you…they're evangelists…they follow your every move…they'll buy everything…they'll get involved and donate to your charitable causes…and they'll go to all of the shows…they may total 10% of your total fanbase but are the source of the majority of your income—like 60, 70, even 80%...they are the top of the fan pyramid… From there, though, we can cross over to the dark side…this is where we find the fantasists, the deluded, the obsessed, the trolls, and the insane…they are dangerous people, a threat to you and the people around you…and they show up when you least expect it…and if they break into your online world, that's a whole new level of terror… Have I got a story for you…The Linkin Park cyberstalker. At around 7:30 on the cold, rainy evening of Wednesday, October 30, 2002, someone walked into the lounge of a recording studio in Jamaica, Queens, New York and fatally shot Jason Mizell with a 40-calbire gun: once to the body and another to the head…he died instantly…and whoever pulled the trigger just walked away… This was big news…Mizell was better known as Jam Master Jay, the DJ behind Run-DMC—one of the group's founders in 1982—and one of the most important hip-hop artists in the known universe… There were been witnesses—but they disagree on what actually happened…there may have been leads—but they all went nowhere…what happened to the security camera footage?…was it tampered with?...and why didn't the police follow up properly?...for more than two decades, this cold-blooded murder has gone unsolved… Show contact info: X (formerly Twitter): @AlanCross Website: ajournalofmusicalthings.com Email: Alan@alancross.ca Learn more about your ad choices. In 2013, England's chief medical officer warned of a health "armageddon" as bacteria learn to overcome antibiotics and new drugs aren't available to counteract the situation. She said "antibiotics are losing their effectiveness at a ratte that is both alarming and irreversible, similar to global warming. TGhe apocalyptic scenario is that when I need a new hip in 20 years I'll die from a routine infection because we've run out of antibiotics." Ten years later the World Health Organization warns of AMR as a top 10 global public health threat. AMR is "antimicrobial resistance." It is the same issue Professor Sally Edwards warned about in England in 2013. Projections are that by 2050 AMR will cost Canada's healthcare system $7.6 billion. The British medical journal The Lancet showed that in 2019, 1.27 million deaths were already caused by AMR. Between 2010 and 2019, 18 novel antibiotics were introduced across 14 develope nations. Only 2 of these new antibiotics are available in Canada. Guest: Jason Tetro. Microbiologist. Author of: The Germ Guy & The Germ Code. Today's podcast: Discussion of issues such as the Johnston Report, Carbon tax, Election issues and more. Guest: Pierre Poilievre. Conservative Party of Canada leader. The Clean Fuel Regulation of the Trudeau government analyzed by the Parliamentary Budget Officer. The PBO calls the CFR "broadly regressive" and says its price increase for gasoline and diesel will by the time it's fully implemented in 2030 be more hurtful to lower-income households in Canada. Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault calls the PBO report "unbalanced" and Gerald Butts, Justin Trudeau's former advisor ripped the report as "incompetence on climate change." - As well, Guilbeault accused the PBO of an 'unbalanced modelling approach" in the "analysis of the price of pollution." PBO report shows most Canadians will be worse off in the federal government's imposed carbon tax. - Plus, what is the expected cost of servicing the $1 trillion-plus national debt? Guest: Yves Giroux. Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO). Says "I can understand that people are not happy when we underline that government action will have repercussions, and in this case, costs, but I stand by the analysis we provided." In 2013, England's chief medical officer warned of a health "armageddon" as bacteria learn to overcome antibiotics and new drugs aren't available to counteract the situation. A former business owner who sent me a disturbing email about an issue not talked about on radio "when China interference and Alberta election dominates". He wrote about how housing unaffordability and household debt is talked about a great deal, as are maxxed out credit cards, etc. Then Peter wrote "I hear nobody talking about all the Canadians who are ALREADY living in their vehicles. I am one of those Canadians living in vehicle. It's brutal! It's tiring. And it's not cheap. In just 4 weeks of living in my vehicle I'm exhausted from lack of sleep, I'm sore, I'm hungry, I'm job hunting feverishly and I'm watching my credit score plummet as I can't keep up with minimum payments. My little 2012 Ford Escape doedsn't have a kitchen. I hope that despite your show's full roster, there's a way to shine a little light on the plight of us who have already fallen through the cracks." Guest: Peter in B.C. Shares his experience. New episodes come out every Monday. You can find the week's other reviews on the show's social on Instagram @themastercast and Twitter @mastercastpods. If you like what you hear on the show and want to help out this newly independent show you can find me on Buy me a coffee and Patreon by searching The Mastercast. I'd really appreciate it. This week's review is onHistory of the 90's - No Spoilers! This great documentary-style history podcast from Curiouscast covers the 1990s with a calm but serious tone that has won the show such awards as Apple's list of Best Canadian Podcasts and Winner of Outstanding Documentary – 2021 Canadian Podcast Awards. In each episode host Kathy Kenzora covers a significant topic from the decade with the help of knowledgeable guests whose inputs are then edited into a seamless narration of history. The show is actually an extension of Kenzora's earlier podcast History of 1995 which was also very popular. Living through any period of time, it can be difficult to understand and keep track of the impacts of major events but this pod is trying to clarify that for all of us who remember the 90s as a blur. A wide range of topics has been covered including serious ones such as The Rwandan Genocide and The Unabomber and sillier subjects like Nickelodeon and Beanie Babies. Occasionally an episode is dedicated to the top ten stories of the year. There are currently 72 episodes that make up two seasons and are on average about 35 minutes long. Most of the episodes can be listened to out of order but I'd save the top ten ones for last. My favorite episodes were “The TTC Subway Crash” and “90's Rave Culture.” The episodes that have the most listens according to Owltail are “JFK Jr. The Prince of Camelot” and “Columbine.” I guess I should mention the podcast gets a little political according to some but not listening to a podcast because the host has a different opinion than you is just not the way to be. The show has 4.8 stars, 345 ratings, and 78 written reviews on Apple Podcasts and is super light on commercials. With professional sound and the standard of storytelling, this pod will make you terribly nostalgic for the decade. Trigger warnings vary by episode but are mentioned at the beginning of episodes.
