Book Vs. Movie: Blow-UpThe Julio Cortazar Short Story Vs. the Michelangelo Antonio Movie The Margos are feeling very mod today with this particular episode. We talk about Michelangelo Antonini, one of the most revered directors of the 1960s & 1970s, with a Palm d'Or, the Golden Lion, the Golden Bread, and the Golden Leopard among his film accomplishments. 1966's Blow-Up is his biggest English language hit, and it captured the New Wave movement in modern filmmaking. The original story is from Julio Cortazar in a short story titled “Las Babas del Diablo,” written in 1959. The symbolism-heavy story is told with several unreliable narrators and the artist's relationship to their medium. Our protagonist is Roberto, a French-Chilean translator who loves photography and may or may not be connected to reality. He remembers watching a middle-aged woman in a park with a teenage boy. Is she procuring him for an older man? Roberto takes photographs and obsesses over the crime about to happen. The 1966 film (Antonioni's first English-speaking production) follows Thomas (David Hemmings,) a fashion photographer in demand who obsesses over antiques and modernism. The movie also stars Vanessa Redgrave as a woman being photographed by Thomas in a clinch with an older man. She tries to seduce the roll of film from him after following him home. But he keeps the original and discovers, after blowing up the negatives) that he might have uncovered a murder. Thomas travels through underground London (via The Yardbirds) and the pastoral field, seeking the truth. So between the short story and movie--which did the Margos like better? If you missed Part One, then click here to watch it before enjoying this follow-up episode. Sarah is an English theatre and film actress who was nominated for four BAFTA's, two Golden Globes and an Oscar. Sarah talks about her biological connection with the British Royal family, finishing RADA and going straight into the West-End where Sir John Gielgud famously said "Did you know you have a bottom just like a boy? Two poached eggs in a handkerchief." Sarah was catapulted into the limelight at a young age, starring opposite some of the greats including Dirk Bogarde, Vanessa Redgrave, Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, Margaret Rutherford & Robert Mitchum; she had two marriages to the same person - the screen writer Robert Bolt (winner of two Oscars, two BAFTA's, three Golden Globes and a Tony award) and an epiphany three years after filming Ryan's Daughter that changed her life forever. This sometimes intense conversation takes us up to 1973, just before she filmed 'The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing' opposite Burt Reynolds, where her life took a turn for the worse and tragedy struck. [ For full episode catalogue please subscribe to our Patreon at Patreon.com/BestActress ] NEW EPISODE ALERT The year is 1971 and the nominees are: 1. Glenda Jackson - Women in Love 2. Jane Alexander - The Great White Hope 3. Ali MacGraw - Love Story 4. Sarah Miles - Ryan's Daughter 5. Carrie Snodgress - Diary of a Mad Housewife - In 1971 Glenda Jackson won her first Oscar for Women in Love, a film that was very controversial for the time. It was banned in many countries due to its nudity and male on male naked wrestling (oh my). Jackson was not present at the ceremony as she believed, for both her Oscar wins, that she did not deserve the award. You have a lot of very different performances here and it's tricky picking which was truly the ‘best.' Sarah Miles in Ryan's Daughter was an amazing performance but the movie was borderline hated by critics. This was Jane Alexander's film debut reprising her Tony winning role in The Great White Hope. Not bad for your first film! Ali MacGraw starred opposite Ryan O'Neal in Love Story playing a tragic Romeo & Juliet figure. Finally Carrie Snodgress was nominated for Diary of a Mad Housewife, a drama/comedy film that was insane for all the right and wrong reasons. This week Cinphomaniac visits the 1963 under-appreciated masterpiece, The Servant - written by Harold Pinter, directed by Joseph Losey, and starring Dirk Bogarde in an absolutely iconic tour de force performance. Marcus and Dana breakdown the film's highly transgressive, for the time, explorations of class, sex, drugs, power, and Jungian Psychology. Being one of Marcus's Top Five Films Of All-Time, he probes the deepest levels of its endless re-watchability, while Dana lends the perspective of a first time viewer to the film's many shocking twists and unconventional structure. They also discuss Dirk Bogarde's incredible body of work, including a brief breakdown of two of his other, far ahead of their time, classics, Accident (1967) and Cast A Dark Shadow (1955), as well as The Servant's other brilliant lead and supporting performances from James Fox, Sarah Miles, and Wendy Craig. From the archive: April 7th, 2021

On this episode of The Reboot Chronicles, beauty health and wellness industry leader Joel Palix joins me to discuss the brand and shopping “Jungle” consumers are faced with. Over the years, Joel has been a game-changer across various industry sectors including beauty, wellness, fashion, luxury, and premium service brands. His experience has led him to advise brands, startups, and private equity funds, with this he founded Palix Unlimited a boutique consultancy. Prior, Joel served as CEO of Feel Unique, a cool e-commerce brand selling various inclusive beauty brands ranging from skincare and fragrance to cosmetics and supplements—and is currently run by CEO, Sarah Miles. Beauty Is A Jungle The beauty industry is really like a jungle, as Joel explains. There are so many ingredients, claims, products, and brands, that it is overwhelming for consumers. This has led to beauty tech solutions that help consumers navigate the jungle of choices, with personalized diagnostics and pinpointed product recommendations. Providing consumers personalized search for products and the option to receive assistance as needed, is becoming a preferred combination of human touch and tech. Consumers no longer need to deal with human intervention, and can virtually try on and buy products.Revieve is a prime example, making it simple for consumers to virtually try on and buy products, through simple selfie-based solutions, in partnership with retailers, brands, ecommerce and social platforms. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rebootchronicles/message
