Why is it that so many classic British sitcoms (such as Keeping Up Appearances , The Good Life and One Foot In the Grave) are set in the suburbs? The recent smash hit Amandaland seems to be drawing satirical inspiration from these shows. Similarly, musicians (such as Pulp and The Pet Shop Boys), poets (such as Philip Larkin), film-makers (such as David Lynch) and novelists (such as Hanif Kureishi in his seminar Buddha of Suburbia) all seem to have found a reach source of satiric inspiration amidst the liminal hinterlands of the "burbs." Why is this? Jo and Adam are back to investigate. They also discuss Boon Joon Ho's Mickey 17, and reflect on their recent life event at the York Literature Festival, "Literary Feuds: Authors Hating Authors in the Olden Days."
At just twenty years old, transgender wunderkind Alice Maio Mackay has crafted a filmography that would make most seasoned professionals envious. Alice's filmography is built within a defiantly independent space that centres queer stories on screen. From 2021's short film The Serpent's Nest, to the run of genre defying horror and sci-fi feature films that includes 2021's So Vam, 2022's Bad Girl Boogey, 2023's T-Blockers and Satranic Panic, and 2024's Carnage for Christmas, Alice has showed other filmmakers the possibilities of independent cinema within Australia.Alice follows in the footsteps of fellow Aussie trans filmmaker Dee McLachlan, who made a name for herself with the 2007 film The Jammed and the acclaimed series Wentworth, paving a way for fellow trans filmmakers in Australia and across the world. With her own distinct style of filmmaking, Alice has inspired and worked with fellow trans filmmakers like Vera Drew (The People's Joker) and Louise Weard (Castration Movie). Trans critic Willow Catelyn Maclay called this trio of filmmakers the 'Three Headed Hydra of Edgy Doll Cinema' and it's their collective filmography that is shaping what modern trans storytelling looks like in cinema. If you haven't already picked up Corpses, Fools and Monsters: The History and Future of Transness in Cinema by Willow and fellow critic Caden Mark Gardner, then make sure to do so. It is one of the vital books about queer cinema. In the following interview, Alice talks about kicking off her career as a filmmaker in Kaurna-Adelaide, growing up on a diet of Buffy and Keeping Up Appearances, while also talking about the fun of making an Australian Christmas film and working alongside non-binary actor Zarif, who has also made a name for themselves as they help shape what Australian queer cinema looks like on screen. There's a notion of communal friendship that exists within Buffy that can be felt as a connective thread of Alice's work. It's a foundational aspect of T-Blockers, which sees a small town overrun by parasites that turn everyday men into horrifying, possessed hosts that spew literal bile, hatred, and violence, threating the local queer community. Part 2 of our look at Keeping Up Appearances and we do our best not to be too negative!
Maybe it's just our age but it feels like Keeping Up Appearances was almost ever present when we were growing up. But how does it hold up in the cold light of day? Could it be a timeless classic or is Hyacinth Bucket a true britcom villain?

In this episode, we delve into the quintessential British sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, created and written by Roy Clarke. Airing on BBC1 from 1990 to 1995, this beloved show captivated audiences with its witty portrayal of suburban snobbery and eccentricity. We explore the origins of the series, the inspirations behind its characters, and its impact on British comedy. From Hyacinth Bucket's infamous pronunciation of her surname as "Bouquet" to the hilarious antics of her dysfunctional family, we examine what made this show a timeless classic. Hyacinth Bucket, brilliantly portrayed by Dame Patricia Routledge, is the heart of the series. Her relentless pursuit of social status and her comically disastrous attempts to impress her neighbors form the core of the show's humor. We discuss Routledge's illustrious career and how she brought Hyacinth to life, making her one of the most memorable characters in British television history. We also touch upon the other key characters, including Hyacinth's long-suffering husband Richard, her sisters Daisy and Rose, and their quirky father. The show's success wasn't limited to the UK. Keeping Up Appearances found a dedicated fan base in the US, Canada, Australia, and several European countries. We explore its international appeal and how it became BBC Worldwide's most exported television program by 2016. Through interviews with cast members, fans, and television critics, we gain insight into why this show resonated with viewers across the globe and how it continues to be beloved by audiences today. We also examine some of the show's most iconic episodes and moments. From Hyacinth's disastrous candlelight suppers to her encounters with the nervous postman and the bemused vicar, we relive the scenes that had audiences in stitches. With its sharp writing, memorable characters, and timeless humor, Keeping Up Appearances remains a shining example of British sitcom excellence. Join us as we celebrate this iconic series and its enduring charm. Talk2TheHand is an independent throwback podcast run by husband and wife, Jimmy and Beth. ABOVE ALL ELSE #9Hey Friend-Looked in the mirror lately? Let's be honest, we probably can't even count the number of times we glance at our reflection in a day…but regardless of what you see staring back at you…The TIME spent looking the wrong direction can lead to a HEART looking in the wrong direction too. Cuz we live in a world where we're tempted to keep up APPEARANCES- our homes, our relationships, our business, our ministry…and even more so, the way we dress, and how our body looks. No wonder it's easy to put BODY IMAGE ISSUES (or any other kind of appearance) in a wrong place in our heart, making it where we find our beauty, acceptance and desirability. But God doesn't see as man sees- He looks at the HEART. And He wants our heart to be fully His… Cuz that's what truly makes us BEAUTIFUL. So let's KEEP UP APPEARANCES…but this time from the inside out. And let's correct the wrong beliefs most of us hold around our beauty and body as women going through midlife so that our hearts are turned from worship of self to worship of Him.Ready to see your beauty through the eyes of Jesus? In this week's episode Mike and Elizabeth talk about personal and institutional neutrality with academic librarian Pam Hayes-Bohanan. While many of us think about free speech and academic freedom in the abstract, they are concrete and routine considerations for libraries and librarians. Institutions release statements and professional organizations issue ethical guidelines, but no one knows better than librarians the often conflicting impracticalities these can pose. We discuss the challenges of book bans, collection policies, socio-political culture, and what they mean for community and academic libraries and staff. Institute for Liberal Values

Five Nights at Freddy's movie review and franchise history! This week on the Soul Forge we talk about everything to do with Five Nights at Freddy's (FNaF). We just saw the movie on opening night. Our initial thoughts and reactions, fresh from the theatre are here for you to enjoy. Also on this episode, we have a brief recap of the last week in our lives. Shawn and Leah have been cooking. When they went to Disney World, they tried the cheeseburger spring rolls. They were delicious but expensive. After finding the recipe, they made their own version. This version was exquisite, and may be better than the official product. Additionally, they have been watching more Keeping Up Appearances and Blake's 7. You can hear their thoughts on this episode. And finally, Shawn continues his quest to modify and repaint Hot Wheels. Five Nights at Freddy's (FNaF) is a video game series and media franchise created by Scott Cawthon. The first video game was released on August 8, 2014, and the resultant series has since gained worldwide popularity. The main series consists of nine video games taking place in locations connected to a fictional family pizza restaurant franchise named "Freddy Fazbear's Pizza", after its mascot, the animatronic bear Freddy Fazbear. In most games, the player assumes the role of a night-time employee, who must utilize tools such as security cameras, lights, doors, and vents to defend themselves against animatronic characters who inhabit the locations and become mobile and hostile at night. The series' lore is gradually revealed through voice recordings, minigames, and Easter eggs featured throughout the games. The FNaF movie is directed by Emma Tammi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Cawthon and Seth Cuddeback, from a story by Cawthon, Chris Lee Hill, and Tyler MacIntyre. The film stars Josh Hutcherson as a troubled security guard who accepts a night-time job at an abandoned restaurant. He discovers its four animatronic mascots are alive and kill anyone that is still there after midnight. Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Mary Stuart Masterson and Matthew Lillard appear in supporting roles. This week's podcast promo: Cigar Nerds
Keeping up appearances can be a full time job. Shawn and Leah are not trying to keep up with the Joneses. In this case, we are talking about a British sitcom created and written by Roy Clarke. Leah recently introduced Shawn to some of her favourite British television shows. The Keeping Up Appearances sitcom follows Hyacinth in her attempts to prove her social superiority, and to gain standing with those she considers upper class. Her attempts are constantly hampered by her lower class extended family, whom she is desperate to hide. Much of the humour comes from the conflict between Hyacinth's vision of herself and the reality of her underclass background. In each episode, she lands in a farcical situation as she battles to protect her social credibility. Also in this episode, Shawn and Leah discuss some recent travel. Last month saw the two of them travel to Disney World in Florida. They received some lovely feedback from a listener and discuss this. Last weekend the pair went to Saginaw, Michigan. They did a bit of shopping and tried a few stores they had never been to. Burlington Coat Factory proved a disappointment. Five Below was an interesting store with some rather unique items. Shawn and the rest of his co-workers started new mail routes this week. Unhappy chaos at work is likely the best description. The new routes are quite a bit longer than the old ones. The first day was exhausting and nobody knew what they were doing. There is hope things will settle down soon. Regarding Hot Wheels, Shawn is on a new path. He has been collecting for several months, but is now entering a new phase. With the purchase of an airbrush, he is looking at doing custom paint jobs. Although he has never used an airbrush before, he is very much looking forward to it. This week's podcast promo: Monster Attack

Thank you to Jay Rothermel for suggesting I read these stories. You can read his take on them here:[https://jayrothermel.substack.com/p/two-stories-by-rose-macaulay-1881]Dame Emilie Rose Macaulay, born on August 1, 1881, in Rugby, Warwickshire, England, emerged as a distinctive figure in 20th-century literature. The daughter of George Campbell Macaulay, a classical scholar, and Grace Mary Conybeare, her upbringing was imbued with a scholarly aura that would lay the foundation for her intellectual pursuits. She attended Oxford High School for Girls before studying Modern History at Somerville College, Oxford University.Macaulay's literary journey was marked by a remarkable transformation. From her early struggles with depression, she transitioned into a prolific novelist known for her incisive commentary on society and relationships. This transition is especially fascinating when considered alongside her complex relationships, her private life, and her evolving religious and philosophical beliefs.Macaulay's religious journey was far from linear. Her exploration of faith went beyond the boundaries of traditional Christianity, reflecting a mystical sense of the Divine. While her spiritual convictions evolved, she did not return to the Anglican church until 1953. This complex relationship with religion is reflected in her works, where themes of Christianity often intertwined with skepticism and satire. Her novels, including "Potterism" (1920) and "Keeping Up Appearances," demonstrated her ability to dissect societal norms, often with a satirical edge. Her personal life was marked by a clandestine affair with Gerald O'Donovan, a lapsed Irish priest and fellow novelist. This intricate relationship spanned over two decades and remained a secret from many, even her closest friends. Macaulay's own ambivalence toward her sexuality added another layer of complexity to her identity, influencing her writing and the themes she explored.Macaulay's relationships within literary circles were equally captivating. She fostered connections with prominent writers such as Rupert Brooke and Elizabeth Bowen, often leaving her imprint on their narratives. Her role as a patron and supporter of emerging talents showcased her nurturing spirit, even as her own literary prowess continued to grow. Her impact extended to journalism, where she contributed to magazines like Time & Tide and the Spectator. Her engagement with contemporary issues, including her support for the League of Nations, underscored her commitment to global harmony.Macaulay's work often grappled with the tension between individual freedom and societal responsibilities. Her novel "The World My Wilderness" (1950) exemplified this theme, as it navigated war-torn landscapes and internal struggles. The contrast between private introspection and public involvement became a defining motif in her literary explorations.Dame Emilie Rose Macaulay's legacy is a testament to the interplay of faith, identity, and relationships in shaping artistic expression. Her intricate journey through religious and philosophical landscapes, her intricate relationships with other literary figures, and her prolific body of work continue to captivate readers and scholars alike.
