Welcome to Season 4, Episode 20! There are plenty of things we love… and for sure one of them is the world of film and entertainment… especially when it's Asian American cinema. But what happens when what you see represented in Hollywood becomes blurred with the actual experience in an ethnic enclave… or even drives it? Our conversation today dives a bit into that. We're excited to share this conversation with Professor William Gow. Dr. Gow is a California-based community historian, educator, and documentary filmmaker who is currently an Assistant Professor at California State University, Sacramento. His forthcoming book, Performing Chinatown: Hollywood, Tourism, and the Making of a Chinese American Community is scheduled for release by Stanford University Press on May 14, 2024… and if you order direct from the publisher and use discount code GOW20, you get 20% off! The book examines Los Angeles Chinatown and its relationship to Hollywood cinema in the 1930s and 1940s. We really enjoyed the book and the depth of the research Dr. Gow presents. In fact, this has been one of the most insightful books we've read in the last few years, pushing our thinking of how Chinese Americans survived and represented themselves to often judgmental onlookers. Professor Gow also has worked on several other projects. Some of the ones that we appreciated are More to the Chinese Side (click to watch an excerpt), The Five Chinatowns: A Community History (along with Dr. Kelly Fong one of our future guests and ), and the great article A Night in Old Chinatown (we talk about this one in the podcast). We highly recommend purchasing Performing Chinatown! Don't forget… if you purchase from Stanford University Press and use the discount code GOW20 (all caps), you get 20% off. This case is one of a handful of cases that changed how police view street level victims of violent crime. Robin Benedict's fall from a normal life to a prostitute in Boston's combat zone, the city's red light district, was very quick. William Douglas was straight out of central casting for a nerdy professor. The balding, paunchy professor, fell in love with beautiful Robin Benedict. Streetwise Robin played this "John" for a sucker, however William Douglas didn't care. He embezzled $67,000 from Tufts University and Robin took every dime. Douglas just wanted Robin and when his stalking became too much for Robin to take. She wanted to break the relationship off, William responded by striking Robin in the head with a hammer multiple times. He confessed just before trial and only served nine years in prison before his release. A tragedy all around. Tune in and please give us a share if possible!More informationhttps://bit.ly/30FnfJ1https://bit.ly/3J3DUY7

Professor William Wei of CU-Boulder joins Dan to provide his perspective on the potentially historic protests by Chinese citizens against draconian COVID lockdowns by Xi Jinping's communist regime.
Capitalism was in crisis before the COVID-19 pandemic, and existing conditions of inequality, dispossession, and ecological ruin set the stage for the deadly success of the coronavirus. But how has COVID-19 changed capitalism, and where is the system headed now? The system shock of the pandemic has provoked growing resistance from the working class. At the same time, the wealthiest fraction of society has exploited the crisis of COVID-19 to accelerate their accumulation of wealth and violent dispossession of the world's majority. Professor William I. Robinson argues that humanity is now on a path towards the election of a "global police state," unless it can be stopped by organized resistance from below. TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez speaks with Robinson about his new book, Global Civil War: Capitalism Post-Pandemic, in the first of a multi-part interview.William I. Robinson is Distinguished Professor of Sociology, Global Studies, and Latin American Studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara. It's safe to assume no one consciously sets out to challenge a narrative as deeply entrenched and emotionally charged as climate change. Dr William Happer, an American physicist and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physics at Princeton University, certainly didn't. It was only in 1991, upon Happer's appointment by President George W Bush as director of Energy Research in the US Department of Energy, that his interaction with climate change authorities – and their refusal to engage in customary scientific debate on climate change – piqued his interest. Thereafter, Happer was dismissed for his contrarian views and ‘head butting' with climate change luminary Al Gore, only to be brought back to Washington by former president Donald Trump in 2018. BizNews spoke to Happer (83) about his prodigious career and discovery that the burgeoning climate change hysteria had no scientific basis. Happer meticulously detailed why and how CO2, the “demon gas”, is not a pollutant but is essential to mankind's prosperity. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Princeton Professor Emeritus in Physics, William Happer, joins us to discuss the impact of CO2 on the Earth's climate and the state of modern science. What is the scientific evidence on the relationship between CO2 and Earth's climate? Does CO2 drive the Earth's temperature, or does temperature drive CO2? What does the fossil record tell us about the state of the world's climate in the past? Is current warming unprecedented? Why don't scientists study the evidence of prehistoric forests in the Arctic, and what it implies for historical temperatures? Why is there little focus on the enormous benefits of CO2? What is the evidence for CO2 driving ocean acidification? How much better are scientists today from the scientists involved in the Salem witch hunt? How does politicization affect science, and why does Professor Happer think that the more policy-driven a field is, the less trustworthy its conclusions are?References (All links available on saifedean.com/podcast/138-climate-physics-with-professor-william-happer)Professor Happer's 2014 paper Why has global warming paused? The CO2 Coalition website.Does ocean acidification alter fish behaviorElsmere Island Mummified ForestProfessor Happer's editorial with Harisson Schmitt: In defence of Carbon DioxideProfessors Lindzen and Happer's Comment on the SEC's Proposed Rule "The Enhancement and Standardization of Climate-Related Disclosures for Investors."https://co2coalition.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Happer-Lindzen-SEC-6-17-22.pdfSaifedean's first book, The Bitcoin Standard.Saifedean's second book, The Fiat Standard.Enjoyed this episode? We are finding out that politics and the law are sometimes about separate ways of looking at the world. The law is often about the past. It's about adjudicating events that have happened, laws that have been broken, and punishments that should be meted out in the public sphere, particularly with respect to Donald Trump. We see it playing out with January 6th, past tax violations, stolen documents, and the results of past elections. Politics on the other hand is about what's ahead. It's about how imagining, defining, and enacting policy and laws will shape our individual and collective future. While we've all been focused on the law of late, many have missed the political discussions taking place on the far right under the moniker of national conservatism, a set of ideas and potential policies that pull together all the forces that Trump has unleashed. This is more than just traditional populism. It's a set of ideas that bear little resemblance to traditional conservatism. It's an intellectual framework that does nothing short of turn back every idea from the enlightenment to the evolution of America since the 1950s. Not to take anything away from the legal proceedings that are currently underway with respect to Trump, the forces that he has unleashed as voiced at the gathering of national conservatives a couple of weeks ago, which included over 100 speakers, 23 panels, and three US senators, governors, and billionaires, are where our eyes should be focused. This is the world that professor William Galston of Brookings Institution has studied. My WhoWhatWhy conversation with William Galston:
A single fertilised egg generates an embryo. Different cell types in this embryo develop into various organs of a new human being, including a new human brain. Everything starts with a single fertilised egg, and in the embryo, some embryonic cells develop into neural stem cells that construct the brain. By the time a baby is born, its brain is already made up of billions of precisely designed neurons that are connected by trillions of synapses to form a small, compact but incredibly powerful supercomputer. In his recent book “Zero to Birth: How the Human Brain Is Built” pioneering experimental neurobiologist professor William Harris takes the reader on an incredible journey to the very edge of creation, from the moment an egg is fertilised to every stage of a human brain's development in the womb — and even a bit beyond. In this episode of Bridging the Gaps, I speak with Professor William Harris the process of how the brain is built. William Harris is professor emeritus of anatomy at the University of Cambridge. He is the coauthor of Development of the Nervous System and Genetic Neurobiology and the co-editor of Retinal Development. He is a fellow of the Royal Society. We begin by examining the evolutionary history of the brain, which spans billions of years and in the Proterozoic eon, when multicellular animals first descended from single-celled organisms, and then we discuss how the development of a fetal brain over the course of nine months reflects the brain's evolution through the ages. We discuss the emergence of first neural stem cells and how the formation of the neural plate and then its progress to the neural tube give the first glimpses of the development of the brain in an embryo. We discuss in detail how cells divide and create neural stem cells and then how these stem cells start producing neurons. A fascinating topic that we then cover is how individual neurons form connections with other neurons. Professor Harris explains how comparative animal studies have been crucial to understanding what makes a human brain human, and how advances in science are assisting us in understanding many qualities that don't manifest until later in life. This has been a fascinating discussion on an intriguing topic. Complement this discussion with “The Spike: Journey of Electric Signals in Brain from Perception to Action with Professor Mark Humphries” available at: https://www.bridgingthegaps.ie/2021/06/the-spike-journey-of-electric-signals-in-brain-from-perception-to-action-with-professor-mark-humphries/ And then listen to “The Self-Assembling Brain” and the Quest for Artificial General Intelligence with Professor Peter Robin Hiesinger available at: https://www.bridgingthegaps.ie/2021/11/the-self-assembling-brain-and-the-quest-for-artificial-general-intelligence-with-professor-peter-robin-hiesinger/

THE THESIS: FACT: The Party's CDC has been caught colluding with social media companies to censor free speech. THEORY: This expressly illegal act is not an outlier, The Party is a unit--federal bureaucracies, media, academia, tech, pharma and finance--and the government is at constant work with media companies to control the narrative. As proof, I offer the refusal to report on Hunter Biden, the chemical and surgical mutilation of children, the forcing of culture war ideology into government and medicine, the damage and deaths caused by the mRNA. THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES: God allows free speech. In fact, through The Lord, Jesus, he engaged in it, even debating people! Colossians 1:15-23 The Supremacy of the Son 1 On many past occasions and in many different ways, God spoke to our fathers through the prophets. 2But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son,a whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe.b 3 The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His nature, upholding all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. 4 So He became as far superior to the angels as the name He has inherited is excellent beyond theirs. 5 For to which of the angels did God ever say: “You are My Son; today I have become Your Father”? Or again: “I will be His Father, and He will be My Son”? 6 And again, when God brings His firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all God's angels worship Him. 7 Now about the angels He says: “He makes His angels winds, His servants flames of fire.” But about the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever, and justice is the scepter of Your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You above Your companions with the oil of joy.” 10 And: “In the beginning, O Lord, You laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. 11 They will perish, but You remain; they will all wear out like a garment. 12 You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed; but You remain the same, and Your years will never end.” 13 Yet to which of the angels did God ever say: “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet”? 14 Are not the angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation? More than 40 years since their formation, and 125 million album sales later, Metallica is as relevant as ever. Much has been written about the band, but never like this. The Meaning of Metallica is like a riveting conversation with a close friend. A thematic tour de force that traces Hetfield's lyrical development across the decades, this companion examines everything from deep cuts like “Confusion” to megahits like “Enter Sandman.” Sure to spark debate and discussion, The Meaning of Metallica provides a close reading of lyrics dense with details and rich with allusions. “You're marrying a firefighter. That's all I'll ever be. I'm never going to finish college.” That's what Bill Henderson told his soon to be wife many years ago, but thankfully that was not true. Fast forward to today and Bill is now Professor William Henderson, the Stephen F. Burns Chair on the Legal Profession at Indiana University and he has been a law professor for nearly 20 years. Professor Henderson is also the moving force behind Legal Evolution, an online publication focusing on changes in the legal industry with the stated mission of providing lawyers, legal educators, and allied professionals with high-quality information to solve very difficult industry-specific problems. It was almost true that Professor Henderson did not finish college. He dropped out and got a job as a firefighter. But… it was only because he was a firefighter that he ended up going to law school. In the early 90s, during firefighter union negotiations, Bill's union rep asked him to tag along and take notes. Foreshadowing his career as a professor, not only did Bill take notes, he also did in depth research into prior collective bargaining agreements and into state law so the union team could strike a better bargain. In the end, Bill moved on from note taker to union vice president and eventually took over as lead negotiator. Because of all of this, Bill decided to go to law school at the University of Chicago and became a legal professor. Since entering academia, Bill has done a ton of research and writing on the state of legal services in general, but more specifically, how legal innovation can improve it. In a nutshell, Bill's research has determined that more and more legal work is focused on commercial law at the expense of “PeopleLaw” –a term he uses to describe legal work done on behalf of individuals (like criminal law, domestic relations law and the like). 50 years ago, legal work was pretty much split 50/50 between PeopleLaw and commercial law. Now that division is 75/25 in favor of commercial law which is causing an access to justice issue. There is a great need for legal services related to PeopleLaw, but it is too expensive or just doesn't exist. However, Professor Henderson thinks there are a few things the legal community can do to address this problem: Better use of project management techniques, use of allied professionals, and leveraging legal technology.
Professor William Horne of Villanova University walked us through the least discussed time period in African American history. It should have been the start of the U.S.A. version 2.0. It was a brief time period when African Americans were on the road to attaining equity and a seat at the table before the Jim Crow Era stripped that progress away in terms of Black legislative policymaking. In this episode, we spent the hour discussing aspects of Reconstruction that have not been publicly discussed. Lalor speaks with Cornell Law Professor William A. Jacobson about his federal class action lawsuit against the NYS Dept. of Health for discrimination. From the complaint: "The New York Department of Health recently established guidelines for medical providers to give automatic priority to “non-whites” and individuals with 'Hispanic/Latino ethnicity” in distributing life-saving COVID-19 treatments. See Memorandum of December 27, 2021 (attached as Exhibit 1). Under these guidelines, nonHispanic white individuals who test positive for COVID-19 are ineligible for oral antiviral treatments unless they also demonstrate “a medical condition or other factors that increase their risk for severe illness.' Lalor and Professor Jacobson also cover Jacobson's successful legal website LegalInsurrection.com and how leftist on and off campus have tried to "cancel" him for being the only openly right of center person on the Cornell campus. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

In episode 007 of the podcast I interview my college professor Willian Dean, AIA who is currently the Chair of the Architecture Department at SUNY Alfred. We discuss having a plan, working hard, making mistakes and how college is just a part of the journey on a longer path. William (Bill) with over 35 years in a professional and academic career has opened the eyes of his students and created the "Urban Design Studio" in collaboration with student and communities in Western New York. This program focuses on revitalizing downtown neighboorhoods and business corridors. This is a most interesting and reflective episode for me as we also dig into what my design studio looked like 20 years ago with Bill as a new professor. I must admit our class gave him a run for his money, while we were learning how hard work would later pay off. Find more about Bill and the Architecture program at SUNY Alfred here: https://www.alfredstate.edu/users/deanwc You can also find Bill on Linked In here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/william-dean-aia-leed-ap-7579373/ To learn more about Antidote One coaching and training check here: training.antidoteone.com
