Ann Johnson Stewart has been the president of Professional Engineering Services since its inception in October 1995. For over 20 years PES has provided civil engineering services to many large and small clients in the state of Minnesota. Ann's experience and connections in the field of materials testing and civil engineering are what have enabled the firm to consistently grow throughout the years. Ann has been an instructor in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis campus) for 22 years. She was the Faculty Director of the Construction Management program for 15 years, ending her tenure in that position to focus on her role at PES in June of 2015. Ann graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1986, and received her Master's of Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota -Twin Cities in 1994. Ann is a member of DBIA Upper Midwest, the WTS, APWA, and the Minnesota Surveyors and Engineers Society. What you'll learn about in this episode: Ann's life as an entrepreneur in civil engineering Why Ann decided to run for the state senate How Ann is juggling a run for office, managing her business, and taking care of her family at home during the COVID-crisis How Ann manages her time when there are not enough hours in the day to hit her goals The different ways we can take advantage of the time we've been given back due to the global pandemic How the responsibilities to win an election and run a business co-exist Ann's plans for the future Resources: Website: http://www.peservicesmn.com/ Anyone Can Make a Difference I have known Ann Johnson Stewart for a very long time now and she is one of the most extraordinary human beings I have ever met. Ann is an engineer and a teacher, and in spite of the chaotic lifestyle that entrepreneurship brings, she is pursuing a career in politics as well. Every time she sees an opportunity, she answers the call. Coupled with her drive to excel in everything she does, it is no surprise she has decided to run for the state senate. There is a switch she just can't turn off. In this episode of the Intentional Greatness podcast, Ann joins us to share her story. Look for the Next Mountain to Climb Many people who reach the pinnacle of success are content with staying there. But at the height of Ann's success, she began looking for her next peak to summit. After she attended the Women's March post-election in 2017, Ann was inspired by the realization that everyone around her could make a difference. She realized her own power to create change in this world, and since then she has been looking for new ways to harness it. The idea to run for the state senate has been hibernating since then and it has finally come to fruition. Not Enough Hours in a Day In general, women are more hesitant to run for office because they are weighed down by their limiting beliefs and inhibitions. Once we realize that we are all qualified to make an impact and we act from the heart, there is no telling how much we could accomplish. It's not for everyone, but if it is something you have wanted to do, stop hesitating. Ann is pursuing this opportunity amidst a global pandemic while she continues to run a business and take care of her family at home. Anyone can make a difference if they are committed. There are never going to be enough hours in the day to accomplish everything you set your heart to, but Ann has shown that you can still achieve your primary goals either way.

My guest today is Ann, a single-mother-by-choice who was faced with the heart-wrenching decision to not carry triplets. She shares her story and all the reasons she made her difficult choice. We hear the details of her 8-month fertility process and in hindsight what she wishes she would have asked and considered beforehand. Ann was 31 when she realized she was in a relationship just to have a baby. When she learned her partner was sterile, she realized that she only wanted a baby, not the man. So began her path to single-motherhood-by choice. Ann researched her options and found a fertility clinic that had a good track record. However, it was a staunch pro-life clinic, that would become an issue as Ann’s pregnancy continued. She also has a warning about the procedure known as ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection.) A process that sounded like a good idea at the time but had Ann known all the facts about it, she would have said no. Ann discusses the birth of her twins and her early reluctance to ask for help from family and friends. She is very open about her battle with postpartum depression. We discuss her family’s response to her difficult situation and how they pulled together to give her a warm and supportive community. Ann wants women to be proactive in their choice of a fertility clinic. Ask questions, do the research, and know exactly what’s going to happen to your body. She encourages openness and honesty with family and friends. She also has some red flags that women should consider when they find themselves in a relationship just for a baby. Some highlights of today’s conversation: Ann’s “white picket fence” dream. Her time in the military and how it changed her outlook on relationships. The event that opened her eyes to the single-mother-by-choice path. How Ann chose her fertility clinic. How she chose her sperm donor. The painful egg extraction that began the process. Ann’s surprising results and the discovery of triplets. Her struggle with the decision to have twins. The lack of information about her situation. Why Ann would have said no to an ICSI procedure if she knew all the facts. Why she chose to reduce her embryos. The surprising support from her family. Why you need to know if your clinic is pro-life or pro-choice. Ann’s struggle in the newborn stage and how she coped. Ann’s advice to women who want a child and not their current partner. Why single-motherhood-by-choice doesn’t have to be lonely.

She currently sits on the Advisory Board for the International Institute for Building-Biology & Ecology, the Nutritional Therapy Association, Inc. and Clear Passage, Inc. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why the gallbladder is such a crucial component of the Radical Metabolism program...8:40 Women in the U.S. are FFF: Fat, Forty and Fatigued. Gallbladder removal is one of the most common procedures in this country. It's not a "throw away" organ; we need to do everything we can to keep it. The "unholy alliance" between the gallbladder and the thyroid. If people do not have free-flowing bile (which they don't if they don't have a gallbladder) they can't convert successfully convert T4 into T3. Because the thyroid is so intimately connected to metabolism... People with sluggish bile are 7 times more likely to suffer from hyper thyroidism. Ben struggled with decreased thyroid activity while training for triathlons. People who do keto or paleo diets with high intake of fat are at risk; you need to be able to digest the fat and essential fatty acids. -Ann's thoughts on why the gallbladder and bile issues are so common among American women...13:00 Lack of . Study: 500 mg of choline 3x a day for 6 weeks will decongest a fatty liver. Choline is a . We don't eat foods with natural lecithin; stigma surrounding soy products. Lack of bitter herbs in the diet. Natural sources of choline: Lecithin Eggs (if you're not allergic) Walnuts Sunflower lecithin supplement Bitter herbs Ann recommends: Grapefruit Diet (very popular in the 70's, with a resurgence in the 90's) Grapefruit extract influences mitochondria. Bitter melon extract. Ben's favorite cocktail: Bitter herbs, on the rocks, with a splash of gin. "Ben and Jitters" -How do we test for gallbladder function?...20:43 GGT High liver enzymes If light colored stool, dizziness, hearing problems all part of gallbladder meridian. Glutathione doesn't affect gallbladder. A bitter and resentful personality indicates gallbladder issues. Anger is associated with the liver; resentment is associated with the gallbladder. -Is Ann a fan of any of the cleanses out there to increase their bile levels?...23:00 No. Because of congested bile, they can get stuck in the gallbladder duct and create serious problems. The use of choline and bitters, then following Radical Metabolism... -What is the "correct" way to do a coffee enema?...25:25 Depends on the individual. Ensure the coffee is organic. Keep it inside you for 20 minutes; lay on your left side. Hazel Parcells: The grand dame of health. Black strap molasses. -The balance of omega 3 and omega 6 fats, and why there's such a thing as "too much fish oil"...27:45 We need a 4:1 ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fats. Watch out for bad omega 6 fats. Parent oils. You'll get more omega 6 fats from parent oils. Toasted sesame oil - Has lots of Vitamin T. What is Vitamin T? "Sixes are Sexy." -Ann's thoughts on ...35:37  Uses unrefined, raw sunflower oil. Uses proper antioxidants. -The role of Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) in formation of brown fat tissue...37:15 It actually "activates" the tissue. Evening primrose oil; GLA helps people to lose weight without watching their calories or exercising. -Why Ann is a fan of essential amino acids...39:15 We need more protein, not less. Has more to do with metabolic rate than the gallbladder. The right kind of coffee can prevent you from losing lean muscle. It's a way to get more concentrated amounts of proteins. -The best way to test for toxicity in your body...42:00 Non-invasive: hair tests; tissue analysis. Urine provocation test can be very hard on the system. Lots of toxicity in cooking tools and utensils. -Why Ann would rather have a poisonous serpent in her kitchen than aluminum foil. Use enamel covered iron as an alternative. Vita Clay. (Marge, Amazon link) -Ann's 4 day and 21 day intensive cleanses...47:37 Lots of watercress soup, which contains cancer fighting phytonutrients. (Buy it at Trader Joe's.) Can also eat watercress as the green in a salad, as opposed to kale. Juices that are low-glycemic. No pulp. Not uncommon to lose 8-10 pounds during the cleanse. Water weight. You start with the 4 day, then take a week of maintenance and then the 21 day. Why A2 is far preferable to A1 (found in most milks). [30:50] Ann’s desire to honor the victims of Gosnell’s actions through this movie If you were to consider who the worst serial killer in American history is, the name of the person who deserves the title is not one you've likely heard on the evening news. That’s because the media and the authorities who should have ensured this man’s atrocities were never possible, turned a blind eye to his actions. On this episode of the 40 Days for Life podcast you’ll hear the incredible true story of Kermit Gosnell, an abortionist who not only performed late-term abortions but even killed babies after they were entirely out of the womb and struggling for life. Our guest on this episode of the 40 Days for Life podcast is filmmaker and writer Ann McElhinney.   Jurors were more shocked at what is already legal than by the atrocities Gosnell committed In order to hear about the horrific things Kermit Gosnell was allowed to do in his Philadelphia abortion clinic, there’s no better way to learn about it than to go see the upcoming movie, “Gosnell.” But an important thing to note about the true story is that those who served on the jury were more horrified by the actions allowed under current abortion law than they were with what convicted murderer, Kermit Gosnell did. On this episode Ann McElhinney describes the reaction of those who served on the jury when they became aware of the normal practices of those who work in the abortion industry, so be sure you listen. How did Kermit Gosnell do what he did in light of the regulations on the abortion industry? The abortion industry is tightly regulated. How is it possible that the worst serial killer in American history could do what he did under the guise of performing legal abortions? After investigating and understanding the ins and outs of what really happened, filmmaker Ann McElhinney believes that those in places of authority who are charged with inspecting and verifying the cleanliness and practices of those practicing abortions are guilty of dereliction of duty and should be in prison for what they failed to do in the case of Kermit Gosnell. Hear Ann describe the terrible consequences of the “look the other way” practices of the Department of Health officials in Philadelphia on this episode.   When you hear people talking about “the good of the children,” watch out! Ann McElhinney has heard pro-choice advocates dress up their comments in the most flowery language possible to throw those outside the abortion industry off the track of what is really going on in abortion clinics. She says that anytime she hears a pro-choice person talking about “the good of the children,” she immediately feels uneasy. That’s because in her experience it’s one of the many phrases used to cloak practices that are not in any way in the interest of children or their mothers. Find out why Ann is suspicious of such talk and hear what she’s seen that makes her so skeptical of good-sounding language on this episode. “Gosnell” is a movie that memorializes the lives of abortion victims in a powerful way When you first hear that Ann’s new movie, “Gosnell” is about the trial of the worst serial killer in American history, you may feel that it’s a movie you won’t want to go see. But you’ll be happily surprised at the hopeful conclusion of the movie and the powerful way it tells how a few brave people brought about incredible good from a horrific chain of events. The movie is crafted in a way that is not sappy or unrealistic, the acting is excellent, and the impact of the victim’s stories is highlighted in a way that truly changes hearts. Go see “Gosnell” when it comes out in October of 2018, and get the book as well.   Resources & People Mentioned BOOK: Gosnell MOVIE: Gosnell BOOK: The Beginning of the End of Abortion MOVIE: FrackNation Connect With Ann McElhinney Ann McElhinney Connect With 40 Days For Life www.40DaysForLife.com On Facebook On Twitter Email Sign Up App

It was called Air Bed and Breakfast. They had sold you know tens of thousands of dollars worth of cereal boxes McCain scrunchies and Obama owes to finance their business. They had sold only a small number of air bed space but could show that that was working to some extent but the business was selling air bed space not even a room not a couch and not definitely not a house and especially crowded locations where hotels had sold out. And so it's a very different business from what you see today. And you have to make that dotted line from what do I see today. What's different about this and where will it go. And sometimes you're wildly wrong on where will it go. But you're trying to figure out how this entrepreneur takes this idea there. Can she make it a reality? And what I found was that every time we bad on founders where we say absolutely they can make that a reality it doesn't matter if we were wrong on our hypothesis of where it would go. They would make something interesting happen. Matt: As a serial entrepreneur and angel investor. I'm of the belief that startups and early-stage companies change and define the world.
