Preaching for Palm Sunday, Anne Arabome, SSS offers a reflection on what makes Holy Week holy: "The holiness of Holy Week is in our story, writ large in the passion and triumph of Jesus of Nazareth. This week calls us to focus our gaze on Jesus and to follow him closely along the way. If we do so, we discover an immense treasure: a life of total self-giving that trumps selfishness; a gift of self-sacrificing love for the weakest and most vulnerable among us; a fullness of life that neither death nor despair can threaten, steal, or destroy."Sister Anne Arabome, SSS, is a member of the Sisters of Social Service in Los Angeles, California. She has served as the Associate Director of the Faber Center for Ignatian Spirituality at Marquette University and recently founded the Sophia Institute for Theological Studies and Spiritual Formation in Namibia. She holds a PhD in Systematic Theology from the University of Roehampton, UK, and a Doctor of Ministry in Spirituality from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.Visit www.catholicwomenpreach.org/preaching/04132025 to learn more about Anne, to read her preaching text, and for more preaching from Catholic women.

Summary In this episode, thought partner and podcast producer Nayantara Premakumar joins hosts Carolina and Vidhya to reflect and update listeners on our retreat and recent milestones. We share our struggles resisting racial/gendered capitalism through cooperative, decentralized, and transparent governance and ownership structures. This includes a discussion of fiscal sponsorship and technocratic tools for decision-making. We also highlight upcoming changes to the podcast, including efforts to tie together our personal, professional, and political analyses; to acknowledge the lands we've inhabited; and to explicitly prompt reflection and action. Episode 5 transcript Notes 01:30: It was a post on NPOCunicorns | People of Color Nonprofit Professionals, not a Facebook ad 17:21: Is Fiscal Sponsorship Right for You? gets at some of our hesitation. See more on The May 13 Group PODCAST webpage. 21:03: While Caro took the lead on this effort, the list referred to here was actually compiled by the New Economy Coalition's Solidarity Economy Funding Library, which we think we became aware of through the Open Collective. Open Collective allows groups to raise and distribute money in a transparent, decentralized way. See more on the PODCAST webpage. 29:12: “Society at large” is meant to suggest everyday members of society who may not directly participate in the funded and evaluated programs—for example, will they benefit from reduced crime, etc. It is meant to drive a wedge between them and the underclass who do directly participate in funded and evaluated programs. See more on the webpage. 30:24: This understanding does not reflect the most recent research, such as The origins of SWOT analysis | ScienceDirect, which suggests that SWOT was developed by industries that profit by serving the U.S. military's imperial interests and the business model of never-ending war, but it was not necessarily developed by military institutions. It was, however, uncritically adopted by nonprofit organizations despite the nature and ostensible purpose of their work being entirely different. Of course, military responses do have their place (e.g., Black Panthers, Zapatista). 39:09: The expansion is not exactly exponential in that it does not reflect the change between 3 to the 4th power and 3 to the 3rd power. But the expansion is not linear because the increment of growth is not static or consistent—it continually increases. Oranga Tamariki is having to face up to potential back office blunders. The Auditor General has launched an inquiry into the agency's funding decisions, as earlier in the year there were instances of social service providers having their funding cut with little to no heads up. The inquiry will look at the processes, criteria, and planning Oranga Tamariki had in regard to its decisions, the communication involved, as well as other related matters. Social Service Providers CEO Belinda Himiona told Mike Hosking that the reason the sector is so concerned is the rapid nature of the decisions. She said that there seems to be no plan for the children and communities who are being left without often vital services. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Host, Darien Clark is joined by Pastor, Patrick Iga, and guest, Charlie Leavitt. Charlie first committed his life to Christ in March 1977 in Ankenytown Grace Brethren. When he did, he was told, "wait for the changes - it's gonna be great". So he went home and flushed my marijuanna down the toilet and started reading the bible and praying. He was given zero direction. He began in the book of Genesis, but had no idea what he was reading, so he moved to the back of the Bible and read Revelations. He was then even more baffled. Needless to say, after about a month he went back to his old ways as, "nothing changed". For the next 13 years, he continued to go to church, with no commitment to the Lord... "Unless he was in trouble." Ha! On 8/14/1988 he walked forward at Christian Assembly and gave his life to the Lord. He began serving at church and non-profits almost immediately. He then moved to Dallas in August of 1997 with his family. Charlie has 25+ years of experience in sales and marketing. His area of expertise was in printing of temporary and permanent point of purchase. It was a wonderful career and he found success in the DFW marketplace. During the latter half of the above life, he began volunteering with assorted homeless, prison and food pantries. The experiences changed his outlook and his life... he wanted to serve others. In 2019, Charlie accepted an opportunity to be the Executive Director of The Freeman House (Non-profit Transitional living homes for men and women). The circumstances of getting the opportunity were unfortunate, as his dear friend and founder of The Freeman House passed away unexpectedly. In March of 2021, he accepted a new position at Metro Relief as the Catalyst. August of 2021, he accepted the opportunity to be the Executive Director of Metro Relief's Dallas/Fort Worth operations. Metro Relief is a Mobile Street Outreach non-profit organization. They help people experiencing homelessness get off the streets using Mobile Outreach Teams to meet friends where ever they live. To reach critical masses of people and large encampments they utilize a Relief Bus thats serves as half Social Service office and half soup kitchen. Metro Relief has been doing what they do for ten years in the DFW Metroplex. These things they do. That others may live. Legacy Church is grateful to be in a partnership with a nonprofit in Metro Relief. Together, we can continue to ignite our community on fire to serve those outside, those sleeping rough, those displaced, those forgotten, those accused, and those who are homeless. This is a conversation show about the things we're thinking about, the things we care about, and the things that are important to the life and culture for the people of Legacy Church (https://www.legacychurch.org/) in Plano, Texas. We pray this season will offer you times of encouragement, laughter, and most importantly a deeper desire to know and love our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Often times when children are removed from their homes and brought to a social service agency or law enforcement office, they are not placed in a foster home immediately, and have to spend hours, a whole night, or even days sitting on an uncomfortable office chair, a lumpy couch or maybe an air mattress tucked under a desk. Every person who develops an eating disorder has a story to tell. Many people develop eating disorders as a way to show they have control over their lives. They may be in desperate need of attention from those around them. Maybe they just need something of their own, and an eating disorder is all they have. Believe me when I say, their are many, many reasons. Jenna joined me today to full pull about the development of her eating disorder and also her road of recovery. I think this is a really important interview to hear whether you are a human or a human raising humans, it is critical to know how eating disorders develop and even better, how to prevent many of them. But Jenna does not only share her story of perseverance through an eating disorder, she has been through many challenges through perseverance and strength and their is much we can gain from her. A bit about Jenna: Jenna Zelka is a high school Tanach teacher and School Social Worker at North Shore Hebrew Academy High School in Great Neck, NY. Jenna received her Bachelor's degree in Judaic Studies with a concentration in Jewish Education from Yeshiva University. She has held various positions teaching Judaic studies, AP Psychology, and has been the Director of Israel Guidance at Yeshiva high schools for the past ten years. She has even taught Taekwondo as an alternative to gym class for high school girls (yes, she has a black belt). She is committed to meeting the diverse learning needs of every student who enters her classroom and strives to deliver both spiritual and social-emotional guidance.  After several years of teaching, Jenna recognized that many students were gravitating towards her for advice in their personal lives and decided to pursue another degree. She enrolled in Fordham University's Graduate School of Social Service, where she graduated with her MSW and received her state license soon after. In addition to seeing her students at school, Jenna treats clients in a private practice setting on evenings and weekends.  Jenna lives in West Hempstead, NY with her husband Aaron, and their three year old daughter, Samara. If you're interested in speaking with her, she can be reached by email at Spector.jenna@gmail.com or by phone at 718-551-4987. ________________________ I am dedicating this episode to all of the hostages- may they have a very safe and speedy recovery. I am davening for Hersh Ben Perel Chana to come home safe to his family, and for his mother to have continued strength to continue to make a kiddush Hashem with her relentlessness and love.
