Martin J. Forman Memorial Lecture IFPRI Policy Seminar Supporting and shaping the global nutrition agenda with evidence: A three-decade journey of research and partnerships for impact 34th Annual Martin J. Forman Memorial Lecture October 30, 2024 This year's Forman Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Marie Ruel, Senior Research Fellow in the Nutrition, Diets, and Health Unit at IFPRI. She served as the Director of IFPRI's Poverty, Health, and Nutrition Division from 2004 to 2023, after serving as Senior Research Fellow and Research Fellow in that division beginning in 1996. Dr. Ruel will reflect on the role of research in supporting and shaping the evolution of the global nutrition agenda over the last three decades. Drawing on examples from her journey in research leadership, she will present the case for how investments in rigorous research and partnerships with development actors around the world have supported this evolution. Her case studies will highlight the importance of evidence in shaping agendas for maternal and child nutrition and nutrition-sensitive programming, and in positioning nutrition and healthy diets within agriculture and food systems. Dr. Ruel's lecture will focus on the role of researchers in sustaining and guiding major global development trends. Her lecture will conclude by discussing implications for investments in research and their critical importance in supporting effective action to solve the malnutrition crisis that the world continues to face today. The annual lecture commemorates Martin J. Forman, who headed the Office of Nutrition at USAID for more than 20 years and made a significant impact on international nutrition. Welcome to the Humans of Nutrition Podcast brought to you by Registered Nutritionists Anna Wheeler and Prof Danielle McCarthy. We are delighted to introduce Dr Gillian Purdon, RNutr (Public Health), Chief Nutritionist, Public Health Nutrition, Food Standards Scotland, who is charged with delivery of statutory objectives to improve and protect public health, improve diet at population level via the collection and interpretation of population level dietary intake data (“if we don't have the data, we have nothing to say”), then the roll out of public health messaging that is both independent and evidence-based, with a focus on prevention. Of course, Gillian doesn't do all this alone. Her team of nine Registered Nutritionists could be the largest team of nutrition professionals in any organisation in Scotland. Gillian and her team's remit is broad, and the scale of the task is not lost on her – she says “When you look at people's diet, we're quite far away from where we need to be”. While campaigns can influence knowledge and opinion, they don't always influence behaviour. There are of course many reasons for this, and Gillian discusses the food environment and cost as being factors, putting an interesting spin on the often versed ‘healthy diets are more expensive' by using a cost per calorie comparison – insightful! On the hot topic of diets and sustainability, Gillian references the Climate Change Committee's recommendations to reduce meat and dairy and reflects on how this might be implemented, while also being sensitive to health inequalities, how different population groups might be differentially affected by changes in a negative way. We get introduced to Good Food Nation - an opportunity for the public sector to showcase what can be done at a whole food system level. https://www.nourishscotland.org/campaigns/good-food-nation-bill/ Gillian tells us about the importance of collaboration - with industry, academia, environmental science, legislators – stressing that no single body has all the levers to activate change, and understanding the unique perspectives of all stakeholders is key. We have an interesting discussion about the importance of choosing language carefully and Gillian provides a great example in her choice of words regarding supermarket promotions - “rebalance rather than restrict”. We wrap up with words of wisdom for the nutrition professional who may be interested in a career in public health, and end with Nutrition Talent's magic wand. What does Gillian's preferred future look like for the health landscape of Scotland? – we'll let you listen to find out! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - As nutrition professionals working in multiple contexts, we want to use our diverse experience to help organisations achieve their nutrition and health goals by providing them with the expertise they need, when they need it. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Get in touch to find out more about our company, Nutrition Talent and how we could work together. Originally recorded on February 26, 2021. Shawn Baker, Chief Nutritionist for the US Agency for International Development (USAID) continued the discussion after a virtual CID Speaker Series event held on February 26, 2021, exploring their work further with CID Student Ambassador Sama Kubba. The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented threat to nutrition. It is simultaneously disrupting every sector that families rely on to nourish their children. As families’ incomes drop, they can no longer afford nutritious foods. Producers and sellers of nutritious foods are struggling to stay afloat. Health systems are overwhelmed, and families are more reluctant to access needed healthcare, while necessary efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 are decreasing coverage of life-saving care. In December, startling projections of the secondary impacts from COVID-19 on maternal and child nutrition and economic development were released. Shawn Baker, USAID's Chief Nutritionist, will share the latest data on the devastating impacts of COVID-19 on nutrition, as well as insights into how USAID and its partners are using this data to adapt programming and ensure a more effective, coordinated response to address this global nutrition crisis. Shawn Baker is the Chief Nutritionist for the US Agency for International Development (USAID). In this position, he chairs the Agency’s Nutrition Leadership Council, oversees the vision and strategy of the Agency’s Center for Nutrition in the Bureau for Resilience and Food Security, and coordinates related efforts across USAID. He also guides USAID’s investments and engagement with partners to address malnutrition in developing countries.
Global nutrition priorities, financing, and governance have evolved significantly over the last two decades. The translation of scientific evidence and cross-sector program data and experience has played a leading role in this evolution. But evidence alone is insufficient to stimulate broad-based action and enduring nutrition change. At the 30th annual Martin J. Forman Memorial lecture, Ellen Piwoz will address how the global nutrition community strategically used data and evidence to spur collective action and investment, emphasizing the period from 2008 to the present. Lessons from efforts to reframe nutrition problems, consequences, and solutions will be discussed along with personal reflections on what should be avoided or done differently in the future to ensure that nutrition remains a global priority. The annual lecture commemorates the significant impact on international nutrition by Martin J. Forman, who headed the Office of Nutrition at USAID for more than 20 years. The annual lecturer is invited to present his or her personal, often unconventional, views about large issues dealing with malnutrition. To say that Emily and Kwame are changing the world would be an understatement. Our guest this week, Emily Cunningham, is the Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of True Moringa, and shares her story of bringing the benefits of “the miracle tree” to the U.S. In 2011, Emily’s co-founder Kwami had his sights set on becoming a rocket scientist. Emily was in the midst of her third year of studying development economics at Harvard, frustrated by the disconnect between the academic literature and the realities of poverty on the ground. Coming from different worlds and backgrounds, they traveled to northern Ghana together with MIT’s D-Lab. There, they were united by a desire to take on the challenges smallholder farmers face daily without access to patient capital, quality inputs, technical training, or guaranteed markets. ENTER THE MORINGA TREE. During their time in Ghana, Kwami and Emily were introduced to what was known locally as “the miracle tree.” The tree thrives in arid climates. It helps the crops around it grown better. It can be intercropped with subsistence crops mitigating risk to farmers. The leaves, with more vitamin A than carrots, more protein than eggs, more calcium than milk and more iron than spinach have the potential to end malnutrition and provide a stable food source to farmers. The oil seeds, rich in anti-oxidants and moisturizing agents produce one of nature’s finest cosmetic oils for hair and skin care. The solution to poverty, malnutrition, and hunger was growing in their own backyards. INTRODUCING TRUE MORINGA. The more they learned about the harmful chemicals in synthetic cosmetics and hair relaxers, the more passionate they became about bringing conscious consumers a natural alternative that actually worked. Putting their engineering and business acumen to work, they went back to Cambridge to devise a proprietary extraction system that could be brought closer to the farmers, adding value and jobs on the ground, and producing the highest quality natural oil nature has to offer. Today, they serve over 5,000 small farming families, they have planted over 2 million trees, and they have increased the farmer incomes by 10x. Can you say power duo?! Check out True Moringa here!! She currently sits on the Advisory Board for the International Institute for Building-Biology & Ecology, the Nutritional Therapy Association, Inc. and Clear Passage, Inc. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why the gallbladder is such a crucial component of the Radical Metabolism program...8:40 Women in the U.S. are FFF: Fat, Forty and Fatigued. Gallbladder removal is one of the most common procedures in this country. It's not a "throw away" organ; we need to do everything we can to keep it. The "unholy alliance" between the gallbladder and the thyroid. If people do not have free-flowing bile (which they don't if they don't have a gallbladder) they can't convert successfully convert T4 into T3. Because the thyroid is so intimately connected to metabolism... People with sluggish bile are 7 times more likely to suffer from hyper thyroidism. Ben struggled with decreased thyroid activity while training for triathlons. People who do keto or paleo diets with high intake of fat are at risk; you need to be able to digest the fat and essential fatty acids. -Ann's thoughts on why the gallbladder and bile issues are so common among American women...13:00 Lack of . Study: 500 mg of choline 3x a day for 6 weeks will decongest a fatty liver. Choline is a . We don't eat foods with natural lecithin; stigma surrounding soy products. Lack of bitter herbs in the diet. Natural sources of choline: Lecithin Eggs (if you're not allergic) Walnuts Sunflower lecithin supplement Bitter herbs Ann recommends: Grapefruit Diet (very popular in the 70's, with a resurgence in the 90's) Grapefruit extract influences mitochondria. Bitter melon extract. Ben's favorite cocktail: Bitter herbs, on the rocks, with a splash of gin. "Ben and Jitters" -How do we test for gallbladder function?...20:43 GGT High liver enzymes If light colored stool, dizziness, hearing problems all part of gallbladder meridian. Glutathione doesn't affect gallbladder. A bitter and resentful personality indicates gallbladder issues. Anger is associated with the liver; resentment is associated with the gallbladder. -Is Ann a fan of any of the cleanses out there to increase their bile levels?...23:00 No. Because of congested bile, they can get stuck in the gallbladder duct and create serious problems. The use of choline and bitters, then following Radical Metabolism... -What is the "correct" way to do a coffee enema?...25:25 Depends on the individual. Ensure the coffee is organic. Keep it inside you for 20 minutes; lay on your left side. Hazel Parcells: The grand dame of health. Black strap molasses. -The balance of omega 3 and omega 6 fats, and why there's such a thing as "too much fish oil"...27:45 We need a 4:1 ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fats. Watch out for bad omega 6 fats. Parent oils. You'll get more omega 6 fats from parent oils. Toasted sesame oil - Has lots of Vitamin T. What is Vitamin T? "Sixes are Sexy." -Ann's thoughts on ...35:37 Uses unrefined, raw sunflower oil. Uses proper antioxidants. -The role of Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) in formation of brown fat tissue...37:15 It actually "activates" the tissue. Evening primrose oil; GLA helps people to lose weight without watching their calories or exercising. -Why Ann is a fan of essential amino acids...39:15 We need more protein, not less. Has more to do with metabolic rate than the gallbladder. The right kind of coffee can prevent you from losing lean muscle. It's a way to get more concentrated amounts of proteins. -The best way to test for toxicity in your body...42:00 Non-invasive: hair tests; tissue analysis. Urine provocation test can be very hard on the system. Lots of toxicity in cooking tools and utensils. -Why Ann would rather have a poisonous serpent in her kitchen than aluminum foil. Use enamel covered iron as an alternative. Vita Clay. (Marge, Amazon link) -Ann's 4 day and 21 day intensive cleanses...47:37 Lots of watercress soup, which contains cancer fighting phytonutrients. (Buy it at Trader Joe's.) Can also eat watercress as the green in a salad, as opposed to kale. Juices that are low-glycemic. No pulp. Not uncommon to lose 8-10 pounds during the cleanse. Water weight. You start with the 4 day, then take a week of maintenance and then the 21 day. Why A2 is far preferable to A1 (found in most milks). Radical Metabolism http://learntruehealth.com/radical-metabolism/ Radical metabolism is a book that may be the answer to your health woes. Most of us experience symptoms and jump on the chance to mask it with drugs. But there is a need to dig deeper into the cause of our health ailments and treat it naturally. Ann Louise Gittleman is a respected Nutritionist and a bestselling author of more than thirty books. Join us in this episode as she talks extensively on radical metabolism and everything there is to know about healing digestion. Way before writing the book Radical Metabolism, I first came to know Ann Louise Gittleman at 13 years old when my mom bought her book, Guess What Came To Dinner. It influenced my childhood by educating my family about parasites and teaching us how to adapt strategies for long-term health. Finding Her Mission Ann Louise Gittleman was named after her paternal grandmother Anna. Her grandmother died at the age of 42 from a mysterious illness after a trip to the mountains. Because of that family tragedy, it triggered Ann Louise Gittleman’s yearning to research all about finding the root causes of diseases. Growing up, she pursued a Ph.D. degree in Holistic Nutrition. She went on to write books and to date, has written over 30 books that have helped a lot of people understand the real cause of their illness. “My mission is finding the underlying causes of mystery diseases. The answer is lying somewhere. I want to give people hope and healing,” said Ann Louise Gittleman. Caring For Your GI Tract Caring for your GI tract is very important for your health. And according to Ann Louise Gittleman, if you’re feeling sick, there is most likely a sneaky glitch in the GI tract that may be distracting the thyroid glands. “I discovered that people with reduced bile flow are almost ten times likely to suffer from hyperthyroidism. It slows down metabolism and is very important in keeping our immunity at a high pitch,” said Ann Louise Gittleman. She adds, “So I’m trying to bring back the bile and gallbladder function into the forefront. Because sluggish bile can slow your thyroid. And 85% of us over 40 suffer from insufficient or poor-quality bile.” Connection Between Thyroid and Bile Ann Louise Gittleman says the dietary fats in our body supply us with raw materials that are very necessary to produce thyroid hormones that are activated. And when that fat is stored in cells that aren’t broken down by bile, the thyroid doesn’t get the message to get the building blocks it needs. “So, when bile is released, it can not only break down dietary fat, but it seems to trigger the increase in the production of the particular enzyme that converts T4 inactive thyroid into active thyroid hormone which is T3,” Ann Louise Gittleman said. Role of Bile Many of us forget that bile plays a significant role in our health. We often overlook this part of our body, when in reality, having healthy bile can solve many health problems. “Bile is a critical detox method from the liver. And we have forgotten that. So many of us are exposed to toxins,” said Ann Louise Gittleman. Ann Louise Gittleman says the following are some signs that your bile needs attention: If you feel bloated especially after a fatty meal, you may have inadequate bile flow or sub-optimal bile which could be affecting metabolism and overall health. Feeling dizzy Having grey or light-colored stools Insomnia or middle of the night sleep disturbances Radiating pain We get dizzy because we are not able to moderate the production of the bile when we eat certain foods. So, our blood sugar is not adequate. On the other hand, insomnia is also related to blood sugar issues. “Without bile, you’re losing your abilities for omega 3, or omega 6, 7 and 9. Some people have all kinds of ear ringing. It has something to do with the clogged gallbladder meridian when the bile becomes congested,” Ann Louise Gittleman explains. Radical Metabolism Book Ann Louise Gittleman’s Radical Metabolism book is a recommended read for anyone who wants to improve their digestive system, autoimmune issues, thyroid issues, weight loss issues and many more. “My book helps your metabolism, allows you to lose weight, it’s good for skin and the immune system,” said Ann Louise Gittleman. “With a better detox method, you can reduce the inflammation that could be the underlying cause of some autoimmune issues. We’ve had wonderful results of people undergoing radical metabolism and solves problems such as Hashimoto’s.” Radical Metabolism Plan The Radical Metabolism plan recommends a 4-day Radical Intensive Cleanse which targets the healing of your digestive tract, detoxifies your body, and restores your mitochondria. Once the initial program is done, one must follow it up with the 21-Day Radical Reboot & Maintenance Plan. Under the 21-Day Radical Reboot & Maintenance Plan, you’ll be taught what food combinations are best for you to see significant results. And Ann Louise Gittleman attests that a lot of people have successfully benefitted from her program. “When you got the right bile by eating the right foods and supplements, it’s very lubricating for the intestinal tract,” said Ann Louise Gittleman. Radical Metabolism Gifts When you buy Ann Louise Gittleman’s book, you’ll also get three gifts: 25 recipes to get you started Returning your kitchen by teaching you how to plan and prepare foods the right way. Crushing Cravings for a Radical Metabolism. It’s a report listing three unique cravings-busting tools to decrease your hunger while increasing your metabolic firepower. That’s not all! Upon checkout, you’ll also get a 30% discount to buy Ann Louise Gittleman’s special coffee which is formulated as an energy blaster and a detox element, as well as good for the heart. Bile Builder Ann Louise Gittleman created Bile Builder about four years ago. She produced this supplement because she wasn’t able to find all the nutrients that she felt could effectively thin the bile and make that bile flow adequately. Producing the product, Ann Louise Gittleman then made a trial on clients, and their thyroid started to normalize. Bile Builder contains choline, taurine, beetroot, pancreatic lipase, ox bile and Collinsonia root. “Make sure you have adequate bile. So, we need some gallbladder support just like people who had their thyroids removed. You need some hormonal support,” said Ann Louise Gittleman. She adds, “First is to digest and assimilate fats. Make sure bile is being congested because estrogen sources surround us. And excess estrogen is prevalent in contraceptives and food additives. It can raise cholesterol levels in the bile which makes that particular digestive fluid even thicker and prone to becoming so much more congested.” For Those With Hashimoto’s For those suffering from Hashimoto’s, Ann Louise Gittleman assesses that there could be some retroactive viruses. That’s why she recommends going gluten-free. She also suggests taking liquid iodine, potassium, and manganese. This is to get the thyroid functioning the way it needs to. “Take a high dosage of omega 6 and 1 to 2 tablespoons of unprocessed hemp seed oil to build the cell membranes and protect it against bacteria, virus, and toxins,” advises Ann Louise Gittleman. “Walnuts are high in omega 6 and sesame oil is also good. Pine nut oil is also great to heal the digestive tract.” And speaking about omega 6, Ann Louise Gittleman says deficiencies of omega 6 include health conditions like eczema, psoriasis, joint pains, and menopause. She also says to be aware of heavy metals. Because apparently, heavy metals can leak into your food via certain utensils. Loving The Bitter Flavor We’re so used to dishes that are salty, sweet, sour or spicy. Seldom do we favor foods that taste bitter but according to Ann Louise Gittleman, bitter is better. This is because the taste of bitter is vital to stimulate digestion. Ann Louise Gittleman further explains that bitter foods increase the tone of your lower GI tract. “It is important to detoxify your system, get the digestive juices flowing and enable to heal a leaky gut,” said Ann Louise Gittleman. Begin Your Health Journey Ann Louise Gittleman says one way of beginning your health journey is taking a high amount of vitamin C to withstand the stress of all the toxins that we have to fight off all day. Her blogs on her website is also an excellent resource for information. “We can all find unusual ways of detoxifying our system. And eating for better metabolism, getting better health in general and warding off all these autoimmune challenges that seem to be plaguing us in this day and age,” said Ann Louise Gittleman. Bio Ann Louise Gittleman, New York Times bestselling author of more than thirty books including The Fat Flush Plan series and Before the Change, has been revolutionizing the rules of health and nutrition for more than three decades. Her latest book is called Radical Metabolism. She holds an MS in Nutrition Education from Columbia University, the title of Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) from the American College of Nutrition, and a Ph.D. in Holistic Nutrition. Ann Louise Gittleman has also served as the Chief Nutritionist of the Pediatric Clinic at Bellevue Hospital and is the former Director of Nutrition at the Pritikin Longevity Center in Santa Monica, CA.
