What if we told you there is one thing you could start doing today, that could divorce proof your marriage? Does it sound too good to be true? Today we have honest conversation about our attempts to connect with our partner and how one small move can increase or decrease the likelihood of divorce. Listen to hear more about: Bids for connection are important in maintaining a healthy relationship Responding to bids by turning towards each other increases the likelihood of a successful relationship Ignoring or rejecting bids can lead to relationship dissatisfaction and potential divorce Couples should make an effort to be aware of and respond positively to each other's bids for connection. Bids for connection in relationships can be indirect and easily missed or misinterpreted. Bids change throughout a marriage, particularly after having children. Recognizing and valuing bids for connection is crucial for maintaining a strong relationship. Challenging the stories we tell ourselves about our partner's bids can lead to better understanding and connection. Being more direct in our communication can help ensure that bids are received and responded to. Making nonverbal bids, such as affectionate touch, can also contribute to a positive relationship dynamic. Soundbites from your favorite Honest Women: "Bids for connection are any attempt from one partner to another for attention, affirmation, affection, or any positive connection." "There are three ways to respond to a bid: turning towards, turning away, or turning against." "Couples that stayed married turned towards each other 86% of the time, while couples that divorced averaged only 33% of the time." "I embraced it so much more because I now looked at some of the silly things that my husband will do as a bid for connection." "There was less time invested in it. It was less risky at that point, meaning there probably wasn't a long history of feeling rejected." "A lot of his bids are the same as they've always been. But I respond to him a lot differently." Karen and Catherine both personally experienced the anxiety that comes from finances during divorce and decided to do something about it. Taking Catherine's financial background and Karen's law background, they developed Divorce Solutions, and they are here to help you feel empowered as you navigate the financial ins and outs of divorce.Co-founding a fintech company that would revolutionize the divorce sector was not what either of us set out in life intending to do, but our experience, skills and life events turned out to leave us perfectly placed to set up this business together.Catherine was a financial planner who went through a painful divorce and vowed to help women understand their marital estate so they did not get taken advantage of at such a vulnerable time in their lives. As part of this bigger purpose, she took on further training to become a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst. She quickly realized that the problems with the divorce industry were much bigger than just financial awareness. In fact, she started to understand that there were systemic issues throughout the entire divorce process.Catherine had the expertise to tackle the financial element of the problem, but she needed someone who had experience with the legal process of divorce who would share her perspective and join her mission. Fortunately, around this time, a colleague introduced her to Karen, knowing that Karen also had a passion for helping empower women through her nonprofit. Catherine also learned that Karen had extensive professional experience as a paralegal and law firm business manager – and, like Catherine, she'd been through a divorce herself, and her experiences had convinced her that the system needed reform. With aligned incentives and joint commitment, Divorce U Solutions and My Divorce Solution was born in January 2016. As couples therapists, we've seen it all, and we know that love doesn't come with a manual. But hey, where's the fun in that, right? So today, we're sharing some lighthearted (slightly questionable) marriage tips peppered with a healthy dose of humor and a dash of honesty. Plus, we're throwing in some insights from our own experiences as wives because, let's be real, sometimes life teaches you more about love than any textbook ever could. Listen to learn about Andrea and Jessica's top tips: Stop attacking; stop defending. Go to bed angry, yep, we said it! Rewrite date night. Be ok with them NEVER liking to do the dishes. Acknowledge one another in passing. Give what you want. ASK for what you want; don't just assume. Increase non-sexual touching...like, a lot! Repair quickly. Try not to fall out of love at the same time. Yes, we know the irony here. The two of us giving tips when we are entirely against dishing out tips! We promise you this is not one of those episodes. When Bri started to notice her clothing and shoes were stretched out, she thought her mom must be sneaking into her closet. When she went to confront her mom, the unexpected happened.Bri did all the things right. And then she went even harder to guarantee she was doing enough to have the perfect life she had been promised. She figured if putting “one dollar of effort” into the vending machine would get her the perfect husband, family, and life, then putting $100 would leave nothing to chance. She didn't want there to be any “skeletons in the closet.” But then God laughed because he had His own plans for her. Just like you can't pray the gay away, you can't “buy” the perfect life.Is it your time for healing? It is time to release the emotional heaviness and claim what is ahead for you. I have got you boo. Yes, it's true, I got arrested three times while eating M&M McFlurries from McDonalds. I thought I had told the stories before on the pod, but I have only told one, so here we go :) In rethinking these stories however, I also realized yet another pattern of insight found in addiction/recovery that can serve us in sobriety. I recently learned the four stages that happen neurologically before change in behavior is initiated: satiation, dissatisfaction, threshold and insight. We have learned this cycle without consciously realizing it in our addiction and early recovery, and we can use this insight to make behavioral changes in long term recovery as well. Hear us screw up parenting (specifically co-parenting) in real-time... But for reals, we let the child do the communicating, we let a text influence a decision before talking about it, and we really screwed the pooch on this one. Let this be your reminder that mistakes will be made. It is important to show grace for yourself and others when those mistakes are made. In this episode, I dive into what I've discovered as the primary cause of divorce in today's marriages – resentment. I explain how resentment accumulates as stored negative emotions within our bodies over time, often stemming from unaddressed issues or suppressed feelings. As a result, it can lead to communication breakdown, unresolved conflicts, emotional disconnection, and a lack of forgiveness. These factors impact intimacy, trust, and equality within relationships. I offer five actionable steps to tackle resentment head-on, including identifying, owning, and processing it both physically and emotionally. Additionally, I introduce "The Resentment Trap," a course I've developed to help individuals address and release their deep-seated resentment. Join me in this episode if you're looking to transform your relationship dynamics and build a more profound emotional connection. “Resentment is the number one cause of divorce today. It's an accumulation of unaddressed negative emotions stored within us, and it can lead to communication breakdown, unresolved conflicts, emotional disconnection, and a lack of forgiveness. Going through a divorce is hard. Then add on family pressures, societal pressures, and religious pressures, and it can lead you to an even deeper downward spiral. In this episode, we are bringing in Noelle McBride, who talks about navigating divorce in the context of a very conservative religion.Noelle McBride was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. After being blessed with three children during a 17-year marriage, she went through a difficult and heartbreaking divorce. Despite this hardship, Noelle experienced much healing and hope in her personal life through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Desiring to help others navigate the same trial, Noelle shares the promises and peace of the gospel in her book Beauty for Ashes: Divorce and the Latter-day Saint Woman. She is a professional motivational speaker and teacher with over 20 years of experience counseling many women in groups and one-on-one. Noelle currently leads workshops for women focused on overcoming the trials and the hardships of divorce based on gospel principles. She currently serves as an ordinance worker in the Seattle Temple and in the Stake Relief Society Presidency. After a season as a single parent, Noelle eventually remarried a widower in the Columbia River Temple. They are now raising all 6 of their children together and learning the joys of navigating a blended family. On rainy days you can find her curled up in front of a fire with a warm cup of tea and a good book.Ready for hope, peace, freedom, and support after crisis in your relationship?
