We first met Heather during one of her amazing 28 day ayurvedic immersion programs, and she has forever changed how we view a healthy approach to eating, sleeping, and forming healthy habits that blend with the seasons and nature. In this episode, we ask her to talk about a very common problem in Western cultures today: Long term stress and overwhelm, and ways that we can incorporate ayurvedic practices to help reduce the negative impacts this can have on us physically, mentally, and emotionally. Listen as Heather discusses:What drew her to Ayurveda. The origins of Ayurveda and the importance of it.Common symptoms from long term stress and overwhelm.Leading/root causes of long term stress.Changes one can make to help with stress.Living in harmony with nature and the rhythm of the sun.How patterns, routines and aligning your habits with nature can help with long term stress and overwhelm.Living a Pathogeniscist (path following life). And so much more! Food list/recipes recommended by Heather in this episode: Golden Milk recipe:Ingredients1 ½ Cup Milk-organic, raw if desired (almond milk is a good nut milk alternative)2 tsp spice mix1 tsp gheeHoney or maple syrup (based on your dosha) Spice Mix: Blend the following and store in a glass, airtight container ¼ cup Turmeric2 tsp cinnamon1 tsp ginger powder1 tsp black pepper1 tsp nutmeg1 tsp cardamom Preparation:Bring milk to a low boil. Turn heat off and add 2 tsp spice mix while stirring gently. Once milk has cooled a bit, add desired sweetener to taste and a tsp of ghee. *If using honey, never add honey while milk is still hot. In this episode, we explore the importance of the impact of brands on people and planet. Not just for the consumers, but at the very beginning of the chain, the farmers, in this case. We discuss the impact on the soil and overall planet and how this brand, Wunder Workshop, set up a blueprint in how business should be conducted; by having a personal relationship with the producers, as well as supporting communities. Wunder Workshop creates products for the People & Planet. They focus on Consumption With Purpose®, by harvesting the power of regeneratively grown plants for the ultimate wellness rituals. Wunder translates to miracle, and they focus on plants that have a quality that can be classed as such. Set up by Tom & Zoe in 2014, Wunder Workshop is inspired by intuitive herbalism and Ayurveda - in particular, the preventative and holistic approach that this ancient medical system uses to maintain optimal physical and mental health. As conscious citizens themselves, all the decisions they make at Wunder Workshop are based on a set of ethical and sustainable values to promote a transparent relationship between grower and consumer. In keeping these values, they source functional ingredients to create products with integrity and purpose. Their full-circle approach to their products, maintains that the farmers, the environment, soil health and customers are in mind at every stage, from growing to the final sip. Watch their story HEREMeet Tom and Zoe Zoë Lind van't Hof / FOUNDERZoe learned about health and nutrition from her late mother, who had been in the wellbeing industry for over 40 years. This meant she grew up plant-based, surrounded by botanicals, developing her own intuitive herbalism, foraging and growing organic food was the daily norm. This knowledge and motivation has led her to start up her own business.Having travelled with her late mother to Sri Lanka to experience and learn more about Ayurveda, Zoe learned about turmeric and its benefits. A couple of years after finishing her Masters degree in International Relations with a thesis on Climate Change, she went back to Sri Lanka to establish a partnership with the suppliers of our most crucial ingredient, Turmeric, and begin her journey to starting Wunder Workshop.Tom Smale / CO-FOUNDERTom came across a significant body of research supporting turmeric and curcumin when studying pharmacology.Seeing the role that plants have in the medical world he was keen to learn more. Plus, havingworked in the medical world for a number of years, Tom was convinced that there was a better way to approach our wellbeing. Speaking about the power of plants and the way they interact with our body is Tom's focus. Using the experience gained in the pharmacological world and a deepening understanding of traditional plant-based remedies, he helps to research ingredients that are functional and effective. Meet our friend, Bryan Roach. Bryan is an incredibly talented musician, singer, songwriter, creative & friend. In this episode he shares his background story from musicals to a record deal to burnout and a 10 year music writing hiatus. This is a story of how many creatives struggle, those of us with perfectionist tendencies have to learn to let go, and the power of having safe allies with whom we can safely bounce our ideas. What is extraordinary about Bryan's story is the redemptive power of faith. Letting go of control, trusting God, and experiencing spiritual growth led to a restoration of things once thought lost. Sarah and Will played witness to and are champions of a revitalization in Bryan's creative life. That's something good!In November 2021, after a decade away from songwriting and recording, Bryan released a new album called The Matthew 6 Project. We are blessed to be part of his music writing hiatus coming to an end and even more excited to share the beginnings of the Matthew 6 Project. Stay tuned for next episode to hear more about the Matthew 6 Project. Rates of anxiety and other mental health conditions in kids have been on the rise over the last decade, and it's no surprise that the pandemic has only made them worse. In October 2021, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the Children's Hospital Association declared the mental health crisis in kids a national emergency. Although factors like genetics, trauma, and stress can all increase the risk for anxiety, diet may be one, we as a nation should take a closer look at. As we continue this season focused on “food as medicine,” I sat down with Jess Cording, a registered dietitian, health coach, writer, and author of "The Little Book of Game Changers: 50 Healthy Habits for Managing Stress & Anxiety." Cording and I talked about why rates of anxiety are on the rise in kids, what research shows about gut health and the role that food and diet play, and if diet alone can prevent and treat anxiety. We also talked about foods to avoid, the best nutrients and superfoods to focus on, and if fermented foods, probiotics, and spices can help. Finally, Cording offered up easy ways for both and kids and parents to better cope with anxiety. Welcome 3:30 Let's talk about your story! 9:45 Kids have a lot to be anxious about today. When a parent is concerned, what's the first step? 12:45 What does research tell us about the role that diet plays in causing, increasing symptoms of, and reducing anxiety? 15:03 What does research tell us about the role of gut health and anxiety? 16:48 How can ultra-processed foods affect kids' gut health and mental health? 20:14 Can diet alone prevent or treat anxiety in kids? 23:43 Can dehydration lead to symptoms of anxiety? 24:22 What are the best nutrients to focus on to help ease symptoms? 29:26 Should kids take a probiotic or are fermented foods best? 30:34 How do we get fish in our kids' diets? 32:59 Can spices like turmeric help with anxiety? 35:54 Why is it important to have meals with fiber, protein, and healthy fats especially if your kid has anxiety? 36:39 What are some healthy snack ideas? 38:20 What are your favorite tips for parents dealing with high levels of stress and anxiety? 42:56 Tell us about your second book. LINKS MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Julie mentions she has interviewed Jess Cording for stories for EverydayHealth including, “12 Potential Signs You're Eating Too Much Sugar.” Julie talks about her interview on Jess Cording's podcast, “Drama-Free Healthy Living with Jess Cording.” Julie mentions research that shows kids are eating mostly ultra-processed foods.

I've been a guest on Tracy's podcast in the past. You can listen to that episode here. T racy, like me, was homeschooled K-12, so she's a bit...well...weird, like me. Like me, she also believes that optimal health is a fundamental right for all humanity, not just a privilege for a select few. Helping people activate their vitality and feel alive has been Tracy’s life long mission. Growing up in a missionary home cultivated her profound sense of compassion and her desire to educate on the simple foundations needed to look and feel our best. Also like me, by the time she was 15, Tracy had already begun her undergraduate education in medicine. At 16, Tracy shadowed a missionary doctor working in an indigenous village in Guatemala, where she gained hands-on surgical and medical training. The time she spent there opened her eyes and enlarged her heart, to the need for wholistic wellness education and foundations. After her experience in Guatemala, Tracy decided to forgo a traditional allopathic medical career in favor of one that focused on regenerative care and education. When Tracy became a mother, her professional path took a personal turn. Her first child, Grace, was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroid and alopecia universalis at the age of two. Emboldened by her daughter’s struggle, Tracy began her journey into into hydration education by pursuing a PhD in the field of biogenetics as well as shadowing doctors from all around the globe to learn their different approaches to disease. It was through these experiences that Tracy became passionate about hydration as she learned the power hydration has to transform overall health and wellness in all people. Today, Tracy works as a modern wellness advocate specializing in the restorative powers of intelligent hydration. She has parlayed her wealth of experience and knowledge into a multi-dimensional career in wellness advocacy and education, starting with her podcast, HYDRATE. Tracy frequently consults large corporations and hotels to help build and facilitate wellness experiences. She also serves as the Director of the International Brain Summit. It's time for Part 3 of my monster podcast series with author , in which Joel hops on for an epic solosode to answer all your burning questions, including: How does "The Carnivore Code" affect Crohn's disease? Should you cook beans, or eat them raw? How much gelatin should you eat before bed or in the afternoon? If apple peel is the first way forward, my question is how much apple peel should we aim for? And what's the best color apple? How should we take human milk oligosaccharides (HMO)? Any thoughts on taking pectin powder (like the kind used to make jellies) in order to feed Akkermansia? Can you take apple peels and predigest them like sauerkraut? Is there a clean baby formula or another supplement you can recommend? What are the dangers of MCT oil supplementation? What’s your opinion of Nuchido Time+ NAD supplements? Do I do the 2 weeks of apple skins, HMO, and phenol powder before I attempt any of the other modules? Do I do the Daisy Cutter protocol right away or wait until later? At what point do I add the other modules in? What is Joel’s one-day B vitamin protocol? What is your source of HMO? Which brand and product? If you missed part 1, in which we discuss rebooting your gut and sparking fat loss using some very unique biohacks and strategies, you can listen to it at "" You can hear part 2 at "" You can also, check out Joel's guest post on my blog entitled "" So, who is Joel Greene, exactly? To put it simply, he's a man who had his 10,000 hours in before I was even born. In the 1970s, he was interval training. In 1979, he was doing Olympic lifts for three hours every night. In the 80s, he began studying MCTs. In 1990, he began studying the keto diet. In the early 90s, he was doing what would be called intermittent fasting today. In the mid 90s, he experienced the rebound from chronic starvation. In the late 90s, he went through his clean eating phase, his macro phase, and his ancestral diet phase. By 2001, he had his first nutrition website publishing cutting edge research. By 2006, he came to the end of all the above and discovered none of it worked over time and under real-life pressure. In 2007, he authored the first article for the health and fitness community based on the new science linking gut bacteria and obesity. In 2008, his website hit #2 on Google for weight loss—with over 1,000 original groundbreaking articles that today represent many of the most widely copied ideas in nutrition. In 2009, he launched the world's first diet system based on targeting gut bacteria. In 2010, he was implementing signal activation of the AMPK pathway. The gurus only began speaking to AMPK in 2017. By 2013, he had the world's largest body of anecdotal outcomes for body composition targeting the gut bacteria. In 2013, he published the first article to the health and fitness community on the dangers of MCT oil supplementation. Today—at 53, on 1 workout a week, eating whatever, whenever, with no drugs, SARMS, prohormones, or ergogenic aids ever—he is the world leader in hacking the body. He is the real deal. He has done it longer and has always been far ahead. He looks it, he lives it. What the gurus say is impossible, he was living every day before they were gurus. He has hacked peak human… Working out once per week… Eating whatever, whenever… …and does it all on fast food! He is the future of real-world health and nutrition, today. Joel is the creator of the , the world's first commercially available program based on targeting gut communities to effect biomarkers. He is a featured author, speaker, and guest in top tier publications such as , , , , and beyond. His system has also been featured on the Dr. Phil Show, where it has delivered astounding life-changing results. He is the future of real-world health and nutrition—today, and his new book was one of the most nitty-gritty deep dives into “rebooting your body” that I've ever read. is simply a new paradigm and an entirely new way to think about caring for your body. The new goal is learning to control immunity, health, and aging using new science-based techniques (or hacks, if you will) to steer immunity for health and to slow, or even reverse, aging. This book will change everything you know about your body. Starting with simple easy to-dos that build one on top of the other, you will emerge with a powerful understanding of how your body really works and how to control it over time, in the real world. Simply put, you will jump 10 years ahead of anything else on the shelf today. As January is known as Hot Tea Month, The Appropriate Omnivore devotes its first podcast of 2020 to organic tea. Aaron invites Casino Opte, founder of META, to discuss all the health benefits of tea. Casino explains why tea, especially organic tea, is a constantly growing beverage in the natural foods market. He explains how META began, where it is now, and what we can expect from them in the future. META also mentions how he came from the sustainability end into the organic tea business. Because of this, META is not only sustainable with its sourcing of organic tea, but also by selling all of its tea in customized glass jars and recyclable tins in order to keep the oceans plastic free.
