Cheers,Scott and JakeBourbon Lens Kaveh Zamanian Bio: Kaveh Zamanian is a pioneer in the modern American whiskey scene, best known for founding Rabbit Hole Distillery in 2012. With a background in neuroscience and an innate passion for craft spirits, Kaveh set out to revolutionize Kentucky bourbon with a focus on innovation and premium craftsmanship. Under his leadership, Rabbit Hole became a renowned name in the industry, creating high-quality, unique expressions that pushed the boundaries of what bourbon and whiskey could be. Before founding Rabbit Hole, Kaveh's career took him through diverse fields, including working as a clinical psychologist and as an executive in the tech industry. His eclectic background played a significant role in shaping his approach to both business and whiskey-making. In late 2023, Kaveh took on a new challenge, transitioning to Pernod Ricard as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Head of North American Distillers. This new role sees Kaveh leading the operations and strategic direction for a portfolio of renowned distilleries and brands across North America, including some of the most iconic names in whiskey. His extensive experience in both entrepreneurship and executive leadership in the spirits industry makes him well-positioned to further elevate the business. About Rabbit Hole Distillery: Rabbit Hole was born to blow the cobwebs off the American whiskey category and pierce through the conformity that had kept it stuck in the 19th century. Rabbit Hole's Founder and Whiskey Maker, Kaveh Zamanian, left a 20+ year career as a clinical psychologist to pursue his long-standing passion for fine spirits. With a mission to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, he set course to develop one-of-a-kind expressions of American whiskey. Through its signature core offerings – Cavehill Four Grain Triple Malt Kentucky Straight Bourbon, Boxergrail Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey, Dareringer Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in PX Sherry Casks, and Heigold High Rye Double Malt Kentucky Straight Bourbon – along with its innovative Founder's Collection series, stands as the best example of innovation and craft distillation in the country. This distinction is highlighted by its use of truly singular mash bills, signature malted grains, and custom-made, hand-selected, toasted & charred barrels. The state-of-the-art distillery is a cathedral to the art and science of whiskey making and is located in the Nulu neighborhood in heart of downtown Louisville. Designed as a true craft distillery designed to scale, it produces 27,000 barrels every year. Since opening in 2018, it has been heralded as the "Architectural Icon" of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and was recently named "World's Leading Bourbon Distillery Tour" by the World Travel Awards. In 2022, Kaveh was inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame's 20th anniversary class, cementing his place among industry pioneers and visionaries. If you're a Republican embroiled in a media dust-up, Jonathan Felts is the guy to call. Whether reporters are inquiring about a Kentucky Bourbon Trail or an election complaint has been filed, Felts is the guy who likes to take problems head on. Felts talks to Skye and Brian about growing up in Davie County, his conservative upbringing, life in Washington, DC, his work on high profile campaigns, and what brought him back to North Carolina. Plus, a veteran lawmaker dies, lots of action in the General Assembly, new polling, #TOTW, and a wild youth baseball game in Raleigh. The Do Politics Better podcast is sponsored by New Frame, the NC Travel Industry Association, the NC Beer & Wine Wholesalers Association, the NC Pork Council, and the NC Healthcare Association.
This year's class, in alphabetic order, were officially inducted into the Hall of Fame September 10: Elmer Lucille Allen, 93, Louisville. A pioneering activist, Allen broke barriers in the Bourbon industry as the first Black chemist at Brown-Forman – and possibly the entire American whiskey industry. Her work to bring opportunity to all Louisvillians didn't stop when she left the company. Amongst her many accomplishments, she formed the Chickasaw Little League and led efforts to bring African American art and artists to the mainstream. Dee Ford, 59, Louisville. An international beacon of Bourbon hospitality. Ford's vision, experience and leadership have catapulted Angel's Envy and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail into an international, bucket-list tourism attraction. Since 2014, she's served as Chair of the KDA's Kentucky Bourbon Trail Committee, earning the respect of her peers and sharing best practices that have leveraged hospitality to elevate Kentucky Bourbon on the global stage. Ken Lewis, 71, Cincinnati. A spirits expert and groundbreaking policy leader, Lewis graduated college as a trained English teacher, but left shortly into his young career for the world of spirits retail. He championed efforts for Sunday sales and initiated litigation that allowed retailers to use credit cards for sales, eventually building The Party Source megastore, the first of its kind in the country. Learning the industry from the bottom up, Lewis brought innovation and entrepreneurship as the founder of New Riff Distilling in Northern Kentucky, paving the way for the craft Bourbon boom that now counts dozens of Kentucky distilleries. The late Peter T. Loftin, 61, Miami. A preeminent innovator, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Loftin founded the Bardstown Bourbon Company that transformed the landscape of custom whiskey production in 2014. He was among the first to take advantage of modernized Bourbon tourism laws in Kentucky, creating a world-class restaurant and bar that graciously features every distillery's brand on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail tour as well as an enviable vintage spirits lounge. Along with the state-of-the-art distillery, this high-value Napa Valley-style experience greatly raised the bar for Bourbon tourism and collaborative distilling. He died peacefully at his home in 2019. R.M. Corky Taylor, 75, Henderson, Ky. A respected businessman throughout the country, Taylor retired from an accomplished career in financial services and focused on a lifelong dream – to resurrect his great-grandfather's whiskey company. Taylor and his son spent countless hours poring over family history to bring back the Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co., originally owned by Henry Kraver in Henderson. He built back the family legacy in Louisville along historic Whiskey Row, gaining national recognition – and national awards – by patiently waiting for his whiskey to age, living up to the original quality Bourbon standards his ancestor first set in 1889. Cheers,Scott and JakeBourbon Lens About Wild Turkey: The distillery for Wild Turkey Bourbon is in Kentucky, situated on a deep limestone shelf on the Kentucky River. The shelf acts as a natural filter and provides the distillery with crystal clear water, vital to making such a high-quality product. Wild Turkey features the legendary father and son Master Distilling team of Jimmy and Eddie Russell, who have over 100 years of collective experience working at the Wild Turkey distillery. The famous Wild Turkey brand name first came about back in 1940 when distillery executive Thomas McCarthey took a few warehouse samples on a Wild Turkey hunting trip with a group of friends. The following year, his friends asked him for "some of that Wild Turkey whiskey" and the brand was born. Wild Turkey is distilled and put into new oak barrels at a much lower ABV than most bourbons. This results in a much richer flavor, as less is cooked out during the production process. Ageing in the highest quality new American oak barrels with the heaviest char available (the Number 4 "alligator" char), imparts a smooth flavor and deep amber color to the whiskey. The barrels are filled at the distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. For more details on Wild Turkey, visit WildTurkey.com.

The result is a body of work that includes memoirs, travel journals, historical sketches, cook books, and photographic essays, all painting an inviting picture of the state he has called home since 1993. Domine lives in Louisville, Kentucky, where he teaches foreign languages and translation at Bellarmine University. In addition to an MFA in Writing from Spalding University, he has an MA in Spanish Literature from the University of Louisville and an MA in German Literature from the University of California at Santa Barbara. It's about love of God, family, community and bourbon. There's a lot of data behind the whiskies we enjoy, and analyzing that data can give us some insights into the health of the whisky industry. Martin Purvis and Duncan McFadzean examine whisky data for their Commercial Spirits Intelligence newsletter, and concluded that last week's Scotch Whisky export numbers aren't as bad as they might appear on face value. We'll talk with Martin Purvis about the analysis on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, we have details on this year's crop of annual releases from Four Roses, Heaven Hill, and Old Forester, along with the rest of the week's new releases. We'll also have our Community segment and explain in Behind the Label why you can't get a Kentucky Bourbon Trail passport stamped at one of the Commonwealth's most popular distilleries.

Beam Distillery. Big Chief's mouth waters as Sarah and Adam describe their meals at The Stave, Distilled, and The Kitchen Table. These three restaurants are a must for a pilgrimage to the trail. In the first half Big Chief, Adam, and Sarah sip on Castle and Key's 2022 Batch 1 Wheated Bourbon that is 98 proof. In the second half they fill their glasses with Hardin's Creek (Jacob's Well) 184 month Kentucky Straight Bourbon whiskey that is 108 proof. This ride on The Whiskey Trip celebrates the love of an amazing couple and their passion for everything the Kentucky Bourbon Trail has to offer. Cheers!

Grammy-nominated Hip Hop artist Jack Harlow recently invested in a beverage company based in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky…but did he choose the right one? When you think about Kentucky and CPG…what comes to mind? Bourbon, right? The dozens of distilleries that make up the Kentucky Bourbon Trail are visited by a few million annually and the State has more than 11 million barrels of Bourbon ageing in warehouses. But just like how Jack Harlow feels a responsibility to make sure people don't think of Louisville hip hop and only think of one white guy…maybe he also doesn't want the Kentucky CPG industry to only be about bourbon. Which brings us to the recent collection of announcements from the Louisville-based energy drink brand Clear/Cut Phocus. The energy drink brand decided to drop the “Clear/Cut” part, brought on Jack Harlow as a co-owner, changed its CEO to a previous Bang Energy SVP of Sales, completely overhauled the visual identity of Phocus, and reformulated the drinks and stripped the portfolio down to a single new flavor. This for all intents and purposes…this wasn't a pivot…this is now a completely new company. Jack Harlow's strategy of buying into an existing brand isn't totally unique but is also a bit different than the norm of celebrity packaged goods behavior. Regardless, I think Jack Harlow would have been better off investing (and partnering) with Congo Brands...you know the portfolio company that owns the beverage names: Alani Nu, PRIME, and 3D Energy. But how about we don't get caught up on the woulda, coulda, shoulda decisions of Jack Harlow. Maybe it's better to focus on if a rapper is even the “right talent” to be combined with energy drinks being the “right product” in this celebrity packaged goods equation because rapper-themed energy drinks have a multi-decade track record of poor performance. So, to that…I wish Jack Harlow and Phocus all the luck in breaking the hip hop energy drink curse. Regardless, fortune favors the bold and, increasingly, the many celebrities who've made the leap into the CPG industry…so we will just have to wait and see what happens. Six years after their first whiskey was distilled, Bardstown Bourbon Company, one of the largest and most sophisticated distilleries in the country, will release its first estate-distilled collection of whiskies in early 2023. The Origin Series introduces consumers to the modern brand's core product line through three distinct 6-year-old whiskies: Origin Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Origin Bottled-in-Bond and Origin Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey. The full series, all of which has been distilled, aged and bottled at Bardstown Bourbon Co., will be distributed to retailers in 24 states, at the distillery gift shop, and via a number of online retailers. “The Origin Series is the first opportunity to taste an expression that is 100 percent our whiskey,” said Dan Callaway, VP of Product Development for Bardstown Bourbon Co. “We've put years of patience into this bottle, waiting six years until we felt it was truly ready to share with the world. The full technical capabilities of our distillery are on display with these three bespoke products.” Origin Series Bourbon is a 6-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. This 36 percent high-rye mash bill showcases the best of classic bourbon with a burst of rye spice. A balanced blend of apricot, orange blossom, and mint rests on caramel, nutmeg, and rich oak unfolds on the nose. On the palate, waves of cinnamon and vanilla lead to a bold, signature lasting finish. Origin Series Bourbon is presented at 96 proof (48 percent ABV) for a suggested price of $44.99. Wheated Bottled-in-Bond presents the best locally sourced corn and wheat grains in this 6-year-old straight bourbon whiskey. This bourbon features 20 percent wheat in the mashbill, creating a beautifully balanced modern expression. Baked peach with cream meets cocoa with hints of lemon on the nose. An indulgent, smooth mouthfeel of stone fruit and toffee leads to an alluring and enduring finish. Origin Series Bottled-in-Bond is presented at 100 proof (50% ABV) for a suggested price of $49.99. Kentucky Straight Rye is finished in custom barrels comprised of alternating toasted American oak and toasted cherry wood staves. This finishing process creates a wholly unique flavor unlike anything seen in the rye category. Ripe cherry resonates through toasted oak, highlighted by white flower, dill, and cinnamon. A rich, round mouthfeel bursts with fruit flavor leading to a one-of-a-kind sublime finish. Origin Series Kentucky Straight Rye is presented at 96 proof (48% ABV) for a suggested price of $69.99. In addition to the three core products, the launch of the Origin Series will include for the first time, a single barrel program for Bardstown Bourbon Co. A limited number of Origin Series Bourbon single barrels will be available annually for purchase by the barrel to on- and off-premise retailers.
