Volodymyr Zelensky visits Ireland today, in the first state visit by a Ukrainian President to the country. It comes as the Government is to approve an additional one hundred million euro in non-lethal aid to Ukraine. This morning Mr. Zelenskyy will make a courtesy call to President Catherine Connolly. From there he'll joint press conference with Taoiseach Micheál Martin, before addressing the Oireachtas. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Mariya Nikishanova, who's originally from Irpin and moved to Ennis a decade ago and Donnacha Ó Beacháin, Newmarket-on-Fergus native and Professor of Politics at Dublin City University. “Ukrainian civilians have continued to bear the brunt of the Russian Federation's escalating aerial campaign,” said Kayoto Gotoh, Europe Director with the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA). She briefed the Council against the backdrop of sustained missile and drone strikes, including a barrage on Wednesday night that killed at least 25 people. Despite the intensifying violence, Ms. Gotoh noted that the UN has supported more than six million people with electricity, heating, water and sanitation services. She also highlighted last month's breakthrough by the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which secured agreement from both sides to reconnect the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant to the grid.On Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2025, Russian forces struck Kharkiv's main hospital with glide bombs and drones, wounding seven and forcing evacuation of 50 patients as rescue workers fought a fire.Since February 2022, Russia's long-range strike campaign has targeted Ukraine's energy facilities to disable power supply and deprive civilians of heat and water, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.Facing persistent strikes, Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to the U.S., Europe and the G7 for air defence systems, noting Ukraine's size complicates full air protection.Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President, is due to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Friday to seek more military aid, with talks expected on sophisticated long-range weapons and Tomahawk cruise missiles.Long-Range missiles and drones have strategic effects that may influence negotiations and bilateral tensions, as Zelenskyy said they cause gas shortages in Russia and could deepen U.S.-Russia diplomatic tensions.Yesterday, Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa, for the G20 summit overshadowed by a U.S. boycott; this is his first visit to sub-Saharan Africa.Canada's Africa strategy, released under the Trudeau government, aims to shift from aid to trade, but Ottawa allocated no new funds while earmarking $2.3 billion for the Indo-Pacific strategy, and analysts say the plan lacks clear implementation and budget.G20 leaders will meet Saturday and Sunday and Carney will hold one-on-one talks with counterparts between sessions, pressing Canada's five summit priorities and joining economic talks on EU engagement with the CPTPP.Carney arrived in Johannesburg just after Ottawa cut back support for the Global Fund amid the largest G20 no-shows, including Russia, China, Mexico and Argentina, and a U.S. boycott.Observers warn Canada risks falling behind peers like China in advancing interests in Africa, while Global Affairs Canada faces a significant knowledge gap across the continent's 54 countries; Ramaphosa, South African President and G20 chair, aligns summit priorities with Ottawa's themes this year.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/policy-and-rights--3339563/support.
US and Russian officials have drafted new proposals to end the Ukraine war but they would appear to require major concessions from President Zelenskyy over territory and weapons. Will they be acceptable to the Ukrainian President, and what about his forces fighting on the frontline? On this episode of the Fourcast, Matt Frei speaks to the award-winning filmmaker Mstyslav Chernov who has a new film just out that follows a brigade of soldiers as they attempt to liberate the village of Andriivka in the east of the country, the sort of place that would be included in the new Russian-controlled territory.
Friday Focus provides listeners with a focused, half-hour masterclass on the big issues, events and trends driving the news and current events. The show features Janice Gross Stein, the founding director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and bestselling author, in conversation with Rudyard Griffiths, Chair and moderator of the Munk Debates. Rudyard and Janice start the show with the big news stories coming out of Gaza this week: the public executions Hamas is conducting in the Gaza strip in order to terrorize and intimidate civilians, and the Israeli government's growing concern that Hamas is breaking the ceasefire deal by not returning all of the dead hostages as agreed upon. How will rival Gaza clans thwart Hamas's attempt to cling to power? Could Gaza be on the verge of a civil war? How fast can you get a rudimentary police force to make Hamas pull back? And perhaps most importantly, who would want to go in there? Janice is optimistic that this time, at least, the Arab world is taking ownership over this problem in a way they never have before. In the second half of the show Rudyard and Janice turn to an important phone call that took place this week between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin just ahead of Zelensky's visit today to Washington, where the Ukrainian President intends to make the case for long-range Tomahawk missiles to hit targets deep inside Russia. The transfer of these weapons, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned this week, could lead to nuclear war. Meanwhile, Europeans have never been more scared, interpreting Russia's drone excursions into NATO territory as preparation for a larger war with the continent. Are weak European governments using the bogeyman of Russia to rally their public to distract from domestic problems and rising populism? Everybody is rolling the dice here, and when you do that there is always a chance that someone will miscalculate, and everyone will pay the heavy price. Several European leaders are to join the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, in Washington on Monday, where he's due to hold talks with Donald Trump at the White House. During a virtual meeting in Brussels, the "coalition of the willing" said they would seek robust security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of any deal with Russia. Earlier the US president's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, said land concessions to Russia would be a choice for Ukraine. Also: huge crowds have gathered in Israel calling for a hostage deal and an end to the war in Gaza; and the actor Terence Stamp, who starred as Superman villain General Zod, dies aged 87. Edition No151 | 05-06-2025 - Trump is apparently annoyed with both Putin and Zelenskyy, according to aides, but his approbation and ire is especially reserved for Zelenskyy, who Trump is said to consider “a bad guy”, “who will lead the world to the brink of nuclear war.” This is a narrative likely planted in his head by Vladimir Putin, who has once again apparently exerted an extraordinary amount of influence over Trump's words and action, after ‘another' of their infamous phone calls. This special hostility of Trump towards Zelenskyy likely has many origins. But envy of Ukrainian President's clear leadership qualities and charisma, his authority among other world leaders, and refusal to abandon his truth for the expediency of sucking up to Trump play a role. We must not lose sight in the face of Trump's comments, or the iniquitous both siding that some of the media falls into, that Ukraine is in face the defender, the victim and Russia the aggressor. Ukraine attacks military targets, sometimes the very equipment used to deliver death and destruction to Ukrainian cities, and Russians mostly choose to hit civilian targets.----------Links: https://kyivindependent.com/putin-casts-doubt-on-peace-talks-accuses-ukraine-of-deadly-bridge-attack-in-russia/https://kyivindependent.com/trump-urges-senate-to-postpone-vote-on-russia-sanctions-bill/https://kyivindependent.com/ukraine-strike-on-russian-bombers-could-escalate-war-kellogg-says/https://kyivindependent.com/for-the-first-time-pentagon-chief-to-skip-ramstein-format-meeting-of-ukraines-allies/https://kyivindependent.com/trump-administration-redirecting-anti-drone-tech-from-ukraine-to-us-forces-in-middle-east-wsj-reports/https://kyivindependent.com/russia-launches-over-48-000-aerial-attacks-in-6-months-zelensky-says/----------SUMMER FUNDRAISERSNAFO & Silicon Curtain community - Let's help help 5th SAB together https://www.help99.co/patches/nafo-silicon-curtain-communityWe are teaming up with NAFO 69th Sniffing Brigade to provide 2nd Assault Battalion of 5th SAB with a pickup truck that they need for their missions. On Friday, President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had an intense (like...historically intense) conversation in the Oval Office — when a potential mineral deal signing turned into President Trump kicking President Zelenskyy out of the office. Many news outlets were quick to criticize this meeting, accusing the President of sucking up to Russian President Vladimir Putin by asking the Ukrainian President some tough questions. So when did asking other foreign leaders tough questions at the White House become a bad thing? Kennedy and Jimmy Failla remind everyone about the nuance and key historical context that lies behind the Russia-Ukraine War. Together, they debunk blind partisanship and explain how people can hate the Russian President while also having reservations about the war in Ukraine. Learn more about your ad choices. Does Zelensky actually want peace in Ukraine? In this video, we dive into the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and whether Zelensky truly wants peace. Donald Trump recently made headlines by delivering a hard-hitting message about the Ukrainian President's actions, particularly after his apparent disrespect toward the United States, a long-time supporter of Ukraine's war effort. While Trump advocates for peace, European leaders, including those in London, have been slow to take action on ending the war. Germany and Poland have already made it clear they won't send troops to a peace force, raising questions about their commitment to a resolution. The mineral deal served as a potential roadmap to end the bloodshed, but Zelensky's actions have thrown it into disarray. We explore the need for Ukraine to return to the negotiating table with Russia and the potential role of peace advocates like Trump and J.D. Vance in shaping the future of the conflict.
