    Prostate Cancer and President Biden

On this week's broadcast of YOUR HEALTH FIRST, we discussed several important health news items, including the recent diagnosis of prostate cancer in President Biden. While we all offer him our best wishes and support, the announcement has sparked considerable discussion about how this may have unfolded.Over the past 15 years, strategies for prostate cancer screening have evolved significantly. The use of the blood test known as prostate-specific antigen (PSA) has been at the center of research and clinical debate. In earlier years, even mildly elevated PSA levels often led to prostate biopsies. However, growing concerns about overdiagnosis and overtreatment have led to more conservative approaches, with many physicians opting for careful monitoring rather than immediate invasive procedures. It is unclear exactly how this approach factored into President Biden's case. However, in speaking with several leading prostate cancer experts in the Houston area, there was broad agreement: it's likely that his PSA levels had been elevated over time, but the decision was made to monitor the situation closely rather than proceed with a biopsy right away.Whether or not political considerations influenced the timing or manner of this diagnosis is something that will likely be debated in the weeks, months, and years to come.Where to find Dr. Joe Galati and his team:Dr. Galati's newsletter sign-upMedical Practice: Liver Specialists of TexasDr. Galati's Book Site: Eating Yourself SickFacebook: Dr. Joe GalatiDr. Galati's YouTube ChannelPlease send feedback and suggestion. Today, I share a new term that I coined: MEDICAL WHACK-A-MOLE.In this LATEST PODCAST episode, we dive into the concept of "Medical Whack-a-Mole," a term I coined to describe the all-too-frequent scenario in healthcare where physicians treat individual problems by passing patients from one specialist to another. This process often leads to patients being prescribed a staggering number of medications—sometimes even as many as 28, as seen in a recent case involving a patient managing five chronic conditions under six different doctors.Join me as I unpack this concerning phenomenon and share personal insights from my experience. We'll explore the implications of overmedication and how it detrimentally impacts patient health and wellness, undermining the very goal of making America healthy again. Together, we'll discuss empowering patients to become better consumers of their healthcare, raising their health IQ, and advocating for themselves. Discover why it's essential to disrupt the whack-a-mole cycle of treatment and take control of chronic disease management, because the stakes couldn't be higher. Our latest podcasts reviews strategies to reduce dementia. The New York Times article from April 23, 2025, discusses a study identifying 17 overlapping factors that influence the risk of stroke, dementia, and late-life depression. The research emphasizes that lifestyle changes can simultaneously lower the risk of all three conditions. Experts highlight that these diseases often coexist due to shared underlying damage to small blood vessels in the brain, with risk factors like high blood pressure and diabetes contributing to this damage. The study identifies six factors that protect against brain diseases. These include low to moderate alcohol intake, consistent cognitive activity through mentally stimulating tasks, a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, dairy, fish, and nuts, moderate to high levels of physical activity, a strong sense of purpose in life, and maintaining a large social network. Conversely, the article outlines 13 health characteristics and habits that increase the risk of developing these conditions, such as high blood pressure, high body mass index, high blood sugar, high total cholesterol, depressive symptoms, a diet high in red meat, sugar-sweetened beverages, sweets and sodium, hearing loss, kidney disease, pain (particularly when it interferes with activity), sleep disturbances, a smoking history, loneliness or isolation, and general stress or stressful life events. The article emphasizes that reducing high blood pressure is particularly beneficial, as it is the greatest individual risk factor for developing stroke, dementia, and depression. It also suggests incorporating physical and mental exercises into one's routine, ideally with friends to add a social element. The best time to start making these lifestyle changes is in middle age to prevent early disease development. Ultimately, the article encourages readers to view these factors as a "menu of options," tackling them step-by-step to take better care of their brain health.#BrainHealth #DementiaPrevention #StrokePrevention #DepressionAwareness #HealthyLifestyle Hosted on Acast. The numbers regarding healthcare expenses in the United States highlight the profound impact of chronic diseases on both individuals and the economy. Chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes not only lead to substantial healthcare costs but also affect productivity and personal finances. The ripple effects on caregivers, who often face financial and career challenges, further emphasize the need for a more comprehensive approach to wellness. Addressing lifestyle choices that contribute to chronic diseases could potentially alleviate some of these burdens. Encouraging healthier lifestyles, improving access to preventive care, and fostering education about wellness can play crucial roles in reducing the prevalence of chronic diseases and their associated costs.By focusing on preventive measures and making informed lifestyle choices, individuals can not only improve their own health outcomes but also contribute to a more sustainable healthcare system. This is Part 2 of our discussion on the nutrition of the bagel. While we may be spending far too much time on the topic (how much can you really talk about the bagel?), I do think it is worthwhile to drive home the point that the "Better Bagel" on its own will not improve your health. From a consumer standpoint, you are led to believe that a product such as this, allegedly, lower in carbohydrates, high in fiber, and lower in calorie, is the proverbial "cure all" to your ills. As we stayed in the discussion, New York City, the quintessential capital of the bagel, is one of the thinnest cities in America. How could this be if their per capita intake of bagels leads the nation? It is not the bagel that is making America obese. It is a lifestyle of inactivity, consumption of processed foods, and a general disregard for one's own health and wellness. And so while there is nothing inherently toxic about this Better Bagel product that we're discussing, we all need to think long and hard about our own fate, and what lifestyle choices we need to make.#bagelnutrition#betterbagel#talkradio#obesityWhere to find Dr. Joe Galati and his team:Dr. Galati's newsletter sign-upMedical Practice: Liver Specialists of TexasDr. Galati's Book Site: Eating Yourself SickFacebook: Dr. Joe GalatiDr. Galati's YouTube ChannelPlease send feedback and suggestion. Over the past several weeks, we have been highlighting the connection between fatty liver and heart disease. This is a topic that we feel is not receiving enough discussion. The majority of individuals with fatty liver suffer from a constellation of disorders which is called metabolic syndrome. Within metabolic syndrome, patients have truncal obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol or triglycerides. This particular risk profile put you at high risk for the development of fatty liver but also for serious heart disease.Patients with fatty liver have a far more aggressive form of heart disease, with the increased risk of fatal complications in the event of a heart attack. In many cases, both the patient and primary care physicians underestimate the cardiovascular risk associated with fatty liver disease and unfortunately ignore these risk factors. This past week's episode of Your Health First highlighted this discussion. What is a FODMAP Diet?

So what is a FODMAP diet? FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols, which are short-chain carbohydrates (sugars) that the small intestine absorbs poorly. Some people experience digestive distress after eating them. Some of the symptoms that people may develop, if they are intolerant of these foods high in fodmap, include stomach bloating and distention, intestinal gas and flatulence, diarrhea, constipation, and cramps. With a low FODMAP diet, you are eliminating foods that are high in FODMAP. Once your intestinal symptoms improve, it would be appropriate to slowly resume their consumption to see which one of these foods causes you intestinal problems. If you're fortunate to identify these foods, you would want to avoid or limit them while not worrying too much about the other foods that aren't problematic for you.In this podcast, I speak with Lauren Mahesri, registered dietitian with Liver Specialists of Texas. Lauren will outline the approach to intestinal gas, the low FODMAP diet, the pros and cons of such a diet, and how to approach certain food sensitivities. The theme of personal and business success is commitment, a sincere desire to achieve, put in the time, and do not take any shortcuts. It dawned on me that these same methodologies applied to your own good health. To remain healthy, you need to remain committed. You also need a sincere approach to your own health and not take shortcuts. Happy 2023! For this podcast episode, I want to share with you an unexpected medical emergency I faced right before Christmas, which warranted emergent surgery. All turned out well, and on the grand scheme of things it brought to light an important health and wellness concept I want to share with you all.Getting perfectly honest with yourself, are you, right now, prepare to undergo any kind of emergency surgery, emergency procedure, or face an unexpected health crisis? It's very well known that if you are not in optimal medical health, any type of minor emergency that you face is going to be associated with unwanted complications. Those individuals that have chronic medical conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, liver disease, and kidney disease are going to fare far worse than those without these chronic conditions. So with that said, what are you doing to prepare yourself for these possible scenarios? The vast majority of chronic illnesses can be medically managed (or better yet prevented) reducing the risk of these medical/surgical complications. With the New Year starting, this would be a great objective for all of us. Take inventory, see what health and wellness issues need to be addressed, and get it taken care of.Where to find Dr. Joe Galati and his team:Dr. Galati's newsletter sign-upMedical Practice: Liver Specialists of TexasDr. Galati's Book Site: Eating Yourself SickFacebook: Dr. Joe GalatiDr. Galati's YouTube ChannelPlease send feedback and suggestion. In other words, these cases could be prevented. Based on recent data, that translates to 660,000 cancer cases and 265,000 cancer deaths that could have been prevented. The main modifiable risk factors include smoking, secondhand smoke, obesity, excessive alcohol intake, eating red and processed meats, diets low in fruits and vegetables as well as dietary calcium, physical inactivity, UV radiation, and specific cancer associated infections including H. pylori, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, herpesvirus type 8, HIV, and human papilloma virus. In the weeks to come on the radio, we are going to continue this series of modifiable lifestyle changes and focus on other disease states including heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, dementia, lung disease, and diabetes.
