This chapter has come to an end. Thank you for everyones support throughout this journey. Eazy Does It gave me a seat at the table to meet some incredible people, and learn things about myself I am forever grateful for. I hope there has been something in this journey that inspired you in some way. Someone's story, someone's craft, or perspective that challenged the way you see things. As one door closes, others will open, and it's the unknown that has fueled me from the beginning. I know my place is at the street level with my feet on the ground. If you see me around be sure to say hello, and if there is some way I can help please let me know. I'll be seeing you all out there. Saine Wong and I sat down to discuss his new venture, Toshokan, a brand new omakase sushi spot that is about to open its doors here at Native Hostel in Austin, TX. Saine & partner CK Chin are about to introduce the most unique and authentic sushi experience you will find in Austin, TX. Stepping inside reminds me of the time I spent living in Japan, and that type of experience is rare here in the US. Hearing Saine's passion for what he is bringing to the market is truly inspiring. Saine has such an attuned eye for detail, the finer intricacies of the connection that food creates, and I have no doubt this will translate into an evening spent at Toshokan. • Toshokan will only seat six people per dining experience. In this episode we discuss why Saine chose the number six, and how this creates an intimate dining experience for those in attendance. With two slots available per night people will be able to socialize, eat, and drink in a specially curated environment. Toshokan will construct an opportunity to get to know people they may not have interacted with before, opening doors to new friendships, and creating memories you will never forget. I can't think of anything that aligns with the attitude that is native to this city than that. I think there is something beautifully human in this approach. Saine is introducing his own unique way of service that removes boundaries between strangers, and will bring people together. We couldn't be happier to introduce this concept to you. • Saine has such passion for his craft, and the perfect personality to bring light to this deep-seated and thoughtful experience. Jeremy and Big Mike both competed in the first Crossfit Games out in California in 2007. • We talked about coaching, personal growth, how our own personal philosophy has developed over the years, and how to make it sustainable. We talked about his rise in the music industry, how he dealt with addiction while finding his way, and then spectacularly one defining moment that would change his life. • I'll let you listen to the full episode, and not disclose this moment of clarity. My biggest takeaway from this episode as we discussed is to never stop committing to yourself fully. As Sam would say, “It doesn't matter what others think”, keep staying true to who you are no matter how bad it gets. • I have found rock bottom multiple times in my life, and I'm not afraid of expressing those versions of myself. I think it is essential that we recognize that the good and the bad we carry inside is what makes us whole. If you are hiding, or not confronting certain aspects of yourself you will never discover your full potential. • Sam is all about adventure. At the end of the month he has decided to step away from the lights momentarily, moving to Alaska, the last frontier. After leaving high school to pursue a track career he found himself in... where? Kansas. Garrain had to get out and left fast, The farther he ran the harder Garrain found it to escape the patterns that kept beating him down. After moving to California, and pursuing his Hollywood dreams as a model with an aspiring music career Garrain would find his all time low while what was on the surface would look like the top. Garrain had signed a $500,000 deal with Ludacris at Def Jam Records, but shortly after found himself depressed, homeless living out of his car for 2.5 years, and now $250,000 is debt. • One day Garrain had enough, looked up at the sky, and yelled out, "Ok! I'm tired of fighting. I don't want to fight anymore. I want to be healthy. I want to be happy. I want to be surrounded by positive people. I just want to inspire people, and I want to make a bunch of money but the money to represent something that I passionately believe in that I would do for free". • This is when it all changed. After one day hearing a homeless man mutter the words, "change your mindset, change your life", Garrain decided it was time to change the way he looked at everything. He said in an interview, "I started taking a right when I usually would have made a left. I stopped taking lefts". 5-Years later Garrain would go from $250,000 in debt to being a multimillionaire. Garrain has spoken in over 70 Countries, written a bestselling book Change Your Mindset, Change Your Life, and is now launching a new project called Empowered Brotherhood with partners Stefanos Sifandos & Preston Smiles. Where they are leading men in new light and teaching them how to embody true masculinity. • Garrain is an absolute force. Humble & kind. Characteristics that are usually found the hard way. Thank you Garrain for stepping up, being a true warrior in the face of our biggest enemy... ourselves. His biggest faults would become Garrain's greatest strengths, and leads him down a road that will inspire many. Angel is a musician from outside Dallas Texas. Angel is coming on the scene here hard in Austin. I hope you'll call it home before too long. This was Angel's first podcast, and he did a beautiful job of articulating what drives his creativity and I appreciate his ability to express it on his own terms. With each question I asked I could tell the amount of time that Angel has spent in his head thinking about things. This is a very important trait. He wasn't repeating things verbatim, he wasn't saying what he thought people wanted to hear, it was authenticity in action. Everything this platform was built for. It was refreshing to know that people are out here caring and choosing to open their hearts. • Go check out Angel's new single Friend or Lover that was released in November. This dude is doing it right, and he is doing a great job staying true to himself along the way. Keep doing your thing Angel! I've been looking forward to this one for sometime. I couldn't be prouder to see your success at this point. If you don't know Matt you should. He couldn't be a more genuine, humble, & talented dude. We discussed where it all started, the grind it took to get to this point, the ebb and flow of making art his full time profession. If you're an aspiring artist or admire the craft you'll dig this one. • Matt is cool, calm, and collected. His style is unique. His career is blowing up, but he doesn't forget where he came from. We spoke about his most recent gallery that opened last week at West Chelsea Contemporary. He spoke about the days where he had to do everything. Transport, hang, light, and organize everything from the art to the display stickers. Things are changing. Matt is riding a wave that he has worked his ass off to catch. It's taking him from NYC to LA, but we get to catch him for a moment in time. The grind as been well worth it, and I am looking forward to seeing your future success. • Jeff Zavala also hopped on to discuss his most recent collaboration with Matt. They have been minting art together as NFT's to decentralize Matthews Platform, and continue to innovate in this industry. Jeff is pioneering some amazing creations in this space. I sat down with Robb Kendrick for a live Eazy Does It Podcast here at Eazy's. Robb was a photographer for National Geographic for 32 years. His camera took him around the world, and introduced him to people & places he never thought he'd experience as a kid from small town Texas with aspirations of being a truck driver. • The majority of this podcast focuses on a project Robb did back in 2004 where he photographed cowboy's across the western United States. Robb photographed these individuals utilizing a process known as Tintype. A tintype, also known as a melainotype or ferrotype, is a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photograph (photograph) made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet of metal coated with a dark lacquer or enamel. • It is a very intensive process that came with it the respect of the ranch workers, because they recognize hard work. It's beautiful to see how their character is expressed through these photographs. There is a sense of timelessness in this style of photography. You will hear simple stories, and uncomplicated perspectives from men and women that still live peacefully not too far from where we are now. These stories remind me to not over complicate things, or get caught up in the rat race we call life. • Our conversation extended beyond this project, and we heard stories from illegal coal mines to photographing Guantanamo Bay. LIVE A GREAT STORY • Simple words. Such diversity in what these words mean from person to person. Zach Horvath joined me in Episode 20 live from Eazy's Listening Room & Studio. Zach developed his brand, Live a Great Story, after going out one night with a can of red spray paint, and spraying the words on a pillar over Town Lake underneath Mopac Bridge. People began taking pictures and sharing these simple words. Zach decided to roll with it, and create a logo that can now be spotted all over the world. • In this podcast we dove right into Zach's story, and talked about how good it is for our minds to travel. What traveling gave us, opening our minds, and the insights we gained from being exposed to different people's perspectives around the world. What happened next exceeded all of Zach and I's expectations of what would transpire. We asked several individuals to share what they had written, but everyone shared in such an authentic capacity that we couldn't stop. Everyone that joined us that night got the opportunity to share, and we selected a few of the best to feature on this podcast. • As usual the microphone was passed around the room, and 40-50 people all shared the moment they were most proud of in their lives. It was beautiful that a bunch of strangers could interact in this way, and feel safe enough to be as vulnerable as every one was. It is a moment I will never forget, and showed us the possibility of what we had created. Listen to people share from their hearts, listen to the diversity in what they are proud of, and think about how it differs from what you yourself are proud of. I felt something shift inside of me when this was happening, and is a feeling I will seek time and time again. Thank you to everyone that made it out for this episode. It was truly special to share. • We decided to hand out cards as people walked in to the studio, and gave them the opportunity to fill out the following: “Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” - Howard Thurman Before you jump into the evening, take a second to reflect on what accomplishment has made you feel truly alive. Big or small, internal or external. A part of your journey you'll remember for your whole life. Write it here: _________________________________________________________________________ Now grab a drink, meet some new people and instead of the usual questions you ask strangers, dive a little deeper into the important parts of life... theirs and yourself. Ask meaningful questions, listen, tune in. Thank you, Anonymous P.S. We opened our doors to our brand new studio, Eazy's Listening Room & Studio, located at Austin's one & only Native Hostel. This studio was crafted to highlight the stories, passions, and pursuits of those in Austin, Texas. There are people flocking to this city hoping to contribute, but it is also a very pivotal time in our city to highlight a culture that has existed for quite some time. • In this new series, at the SpeakEazy, we are keeping our featured guest anonymous until people walk into the studio. With this concept we are able to expose people to perspectives, and industries they wouldn't ordinarily seek out. We aren't selling out this room based on people's interest, but instead on the concept that whatever is in this room is shaping Austin as a whole. So we begin… • I first saw the technology that Josh Draper was using on a friend's instagram story. He was showcasing the Mi.Mu Gloves in a mutual friend's living room. I knew at first glance that it was something special, so I asked him to come by the studio to learn more. I decided Josh would be a perfect fit for the SpeakEAZY. Austin is quickly establishing itself as one of the quickest growing tech leaders in the world. Beyond the amount of corporations that are flooding here. I like to see how individuals are driving this forward themselves. The tech world was an industry I hadn't quite tapped into yet here in Austin with the podcast, and is very important to highlight as it is shaping our culture in massive ways. • Josh performed several different types of songs he had programmed utilizing the Mi.Mu Gloves as people walked into the room. Showing a wide range of what these gloves could do. Like most people the first time they saw the gloves, the energy in the room left one question in people's minds, “what the f*ck are those and how do they work?”. In this episode you will hear Josh's story about how he came across the gloves himself at SXSW here in Austin, what these gloves gave him during “the 2020 experience”, and also how they are being used to innovate around the world. • There is a wide range of how these gloves can and will be used. I am excited to see how these gloves change the world, and I am even more proud that a very special group of people saw it first here at Eazy's first. Join us next week to see who we feature next! We hope to continue to inspire, open peoples minds, and give people a little more room to… listen. We do so through learning, listening, & sharing it with others. Community is the key to expansion. We continue to grow by letting go of our attachment to the past, moving forward with compassion, and humility in our hearts. Erick does this well, because he has put in the time. Austin does not have a huge African American population, which makes it even more important for their culture to have a place here, and for their heritage to be celebrated. • Steve & I sat down on Juneteenth to talk about the importance of introducing perspectives different from your own, pushing the boundaries of what may typically be avoided conversationally, and appreciating our differences with respect in our hearts. I think real long lasting change starts on the street level, and its up to us to acknowledge what we love about our city in order for us to maintain the culture that we enjoy. • In this episode we got into how Jason came up in the world, and what the hustle has looked like for him. I hope you hear the humility that I felt throughout this conversation. I look forward to seeing what you do in the future Jason. It's always easy to tell when there is another lion in the room. Instead of competing with one another we can join forces, & really achieve something powerful by putting our egos aside. He is a true leader, & I am glad to know him. • Every time Chris speaks I can see myself in his shoes. That is not an easy presence to achieve. It takes a lot of work to be real & grounded in this day & age. Josh & I met through Onnit Gym last fall, and quickly became good friends. He has a presence about him that is such a positive force in this world. In this episode we got into how to manage your own energy, and do so in a way that allows you to serve. Josh has a beautiful way of connecting people. His passion to help others & serve is loving awareness in action. • I think there is a lot of value in this conversation, and a lot of it was learned the hard way. We both admit that we have fallen short time & time again, but it is apparent in the way he chooses his words that it was not a waste. There is a sense of wisdom in his words that is worldly & true. The key takeaway from this episode… we are ALL in this together. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did. I will keep coming back to this one. Today I had on a good friend of mine, Kate Aseltine. The dopest of souls. We talked about flow & her discipline through art. DIscipline & expression don't usually go hand in hand. Kate has a way of making that tough balance look easy, and it captivates my respect. It was fun to get to know my friend that much more, and she has so much light to share with this world. Listening to her speak brought me joy, and I hope it will do you the same. • Kate Aseltine (Instagram): @kate_smash_universe • Bringing the conversation of community & culture to Austin, TX. David Trap has been a friend of mine for almost three years. We met in Austin, & started dreaming through conversation. In this episode we talk about what we think the current state of Austin has to offer, and speculate what is important in our future. It is important for us to identify what we want our future to look like, and what we like about the past. • Austin has been a place for people to express themselves freely for a long time. It has been a bit of an escape for people from other parts of the state, and now various parts of the country. There is a lot of growth happening, and that is why it is important for leaders to step up. To make sure that Austin is trending in a positive, creative, and healthy direction. As it has for years. Be kind to one another, greet a stranger as you would a friend, and ask yourself what is something positive for the world that you can do today.
