Every Saturday at Saturn Cocktail Club (906 Congress Ave. Austin, TX), I hold a residency playing Jazz, Deep Soulful House, and Disco. I start the evening playing jazz standards ( Wes Montgomery/ Herbie Hancock), soul ( Sade/ Moonchild) and fusion ( Snarky Puppy/ Atjazz); then slowly transitioning into Deep Soulful House Music ( Vick Lavender/ Glenn Underground). Its a sweet small venue with lots of vibes and character. Most of all, it has an amazing sound system. Here's a little taste of the beginning of the night. I hope you enjoy this mix and all of the others I have posted. For bookings contact me djqthis@yahoo.com or my Instagram @djqthis

I recently visited Austin with my parents had a great time. We saw the Texas Capitol building, saw millions of bats and ate some really good food. The best part? I planned it all. My parents had asked me decide what we saw, where we ate and what we did during our stay in Austin. I used travel blogs to look at all the many different things to do and see in Austin and then picked a few for our trip. I didn't want to over-plan - because part of the goal was also to just chill in the hotel. :) We visited the Texas Capitol and took a guided tour (no cost!). The dome of the building is breathtaking - more from the inside than the outside. Make sure you take the tour when you visit if you can. The tour guides have a lot of great stories and information about the Texas legislature. We also saw hundreds of thousands of bat streaming out from under the Congress Ave bridge at sundown. We had a funny moment when my dad couldn't see the bats while I was gushing about them. He wasn't losing his eyesight - but he did have a streetlight in his vision that was messing up his view of the bats. Once we moved to another location, he could see them too. These are Mexican free-tailed bats, which migrate each spring from central Mexico to various roosts all over the southwestern U.S. They also have cruises on the Colorado river to watch the bats fly out but we watched from above and from below the bridge. Tip: the view from above (standing on the bridge) is better. We hiked on Mount Bonnel - don't worry it's not a mountain and has steps and a trail. No rope climbing needed. ;) I also planned our meals but was also flexible depending on where we were. We went to the Cheesecake factory for the first time but also tried some local favorites like Gourdough's Big Fat Donuts. It was sooo yummy!!! Last episode's riddle: It has keys, but no locks. It has space, but no room. You can enter, but can't go inside. What is it? Answer: A keyboard. Get it? This episode's riddle: What is common between a lion, a horse, and New England? If you know the answer, email me: RiyaRamblings@gmail.com. You can also email me about literally anything else! Like always, listen, rate, and share!!

"You know what, all that matters is that you find a way, however you have to do it, to just keep making your shit. Whatever that is. Just don’t stop. Any creative person. It’s so easy not to. Just find a way. Just don’t stop. You have to give yourself that opportunity. It’s a lot easier now than ever. So by whatever means you have please take advantage of it and go make your stuff, because you’re not getting younger." Rohitash Rao makes cool stuff. Funny stuff. And a lot of it. Lucky for us he recently moved to Austin to take a teaching job as an assistant professor at the Stan Richards School of Advertising. Since childhood Ro has been a prolific creator, drawing and painting on anything he can get his hands on. Studying at Art Center in LA gave him a chance to try all different types of art creation and also learn how to pitch ideas and tell stories. Over the years he has worked as an award winning art director, illustrator, animator, has made a documentary, short films, music videos, stop motion, has co-written seven children's books, has exhibited his art numerous times, and is about to release an album of songs that he will be performing live with his band. Through his art creation he explores his personal experiences and also shares his often humorous commentary on the state of the world, with the belief that comedy and art are therapeutic and can lessen the weight of life. His work reflects our over-consuming society, often made on the very things that we throw away. His work is a conceptual (and often funny) take on the way we live. As a friend put it, “Ro's art puts our society up against a funhouse mirror into which the dog of irony continually dives at its own reflection.” Rohitash Rao is an award-winning art director, animator and director. He has co-created and illustrated 7 children’s books published by Harper Collins, made an animated TV pilot for 20th Century Fox and has had 12 solo shows as a fine-artist. Flores Barbecue in Whitney is one of the top barbecue destinations in the state, according to Texas Monthly, which named it to its “Top 50 Best Barbecue Joints in Texas” list. "I cook my food the way I like it and it seems like a lot of people like it that way," owner Michael Wyont said. "We do put a lot of work into it,” Wyont said. “We make all of our salads from scratch, we make our brisket it smokes from 12 to 14 hours.” The owner knows the secret isn’t in the sauce. Instead, he says, it’s the pickles. “They will come back and they'll say ‘your brisket was really good, but man those pickles were amazing.’” If you're a real #meatman you know that sides are just as important as the food that these masters cook! Michael, who has been cooking barbecue since he was 11, said one of his major barbecue influences has been Roy Perez at Kreuz Market. His dad and uncle would mess around with a smoker on the weekends, but, Michael said, “I knew there was more to it than what they were doing.” A stint at the Texas Culinary Academy put him on track toward opening his own place where he smokes with the same wood Perez uses: post oak. It provides a sweet kiss of smoke on the prime-grade briskets. The tender slices were peppery with just enough salt. And, despite the forty-degree temperatures and a slight breeze when I visited recently, the meat stayed juicy. The same can be said for the mound of pulled pork I ordered. Moist and pleasantly fatty, each strand had some smoky bark clinging to it. A dip in the sauce, a dead-ringer for the orange nectar from City Market in Luling, was unnecessary, but I couldn’t stop. Nor could I with the excellent housemade dill pickles. Louie's BBQ is located on south Congress Ave in Austin, TX. You can find it just south of the 290 Highway in a sea of food trucks. This isn't his first location but Luis Vasquez has been getting a ton of acclaim since he opened. One of my favorite reviews is on his facebook page from a guy named Chris Higgins, "The brisket! Oh my, the brisket! It’s like eating cake. So good. And the Sleeper. The Sleeper will hurt you. You have got to get to Louie’s. By far the best brisket I’ve ever had. Highly recommended. Get there early because they sell out daily." Like most BBQ in Austin you gotta get it early if you want to get any. Luis is humble about his skills and truly takes on the duty of a Texas pit master. He also has great shady seating where you can smell that delicious que cooking while you have yours. His sides are not to be missed as well. The mac and cheese is smooooth and his cole slaw has a little lime and cilantro that truly cuts all the heaviness of the meat on your plate. Good sides give your stomach a break from the grease so that you can eat even more. His street corn is classic with a few of his own twists and not to be missed. Most importantly he has Topo Chico. Not just the regular kind but the twist of lime as well. I know I can't get too far into a plate of BBQ without a little Topo. Both of these #meatmen were great guests on the show and I am grateful for all their hard work. They truly put in the time it takes to keep the BBQ scene alive. Sometimes when you're sitting in line or waiting for your lunch break to start you forget that these pit masters are slaving away, every day, to cook you great food. Thank them an extra time today. Write them a 5 star review and leave a comment reminding them that all the hard work is worth it. I'm thankful for BBQ. I'm not sure what I would do without it.

Hardcore shows, pizzeria bussing, and softball umping seem like a disparate blend of activities, but Daniel Kutch has parlayed them into a thriving career in the bartending industry. A California native with a keen interest in learning, Daniel has been manning Maven in San Francisco for over 3 years now and at the ripe age of 25 is joining us in Austin to guest bartend at The Townsend this Thursday. He's got lots to learn, but no more eager and willing a student will you find.
